PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS Our fellowship night at Japan Inn was a great success, with well over 40 attendees making lots of noise and enjoying the yummy banquet, as well as the wine tasting. Well done Tony and Kerrie. How was the sake Ken? Great to see Bill and Clare back amongst us. BEAUMARIS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL ANNUAL FETE; 3 MARCH

We are still looking for members to assist at the Beaumaris North Primary School an-nual Fete on Saturday 3 March. We have been allocated 3 stalls in Sideshow Alley – Crockery Smash Up, Total 21 and Splat the Rat. We will also have the RCOB gazebo from which we will promote Rotary and sell Olive Oil. The Fete will be open from 9 – 3 so please advise preference for morning shift 9 – 12, afternoon 12 – 3 or all day. This should be a lot of fun and a great opportunity to promote RCOB. A DETAILED SITE MAP FOR THE FETE IS AVAILA-

BLE ON THE RCOB WEBSITE Please contact Bob McArthur if you are available.

ANGUS NEEDS A HOME

Regretfully, Clare and Bill need to find a home for An-gus, their golden retriever. It can be for either a year, two years, or full time. Due to the rabies ban in Bali, it is too difficult to get him in. But we are putting the interests of Angus ahead of our own, and we want to find a loving home for him. And, access visits if at all possible! Contact either of us anytime. He is currently in Carrum Downs with mum, if anyone would like to meet him. Friends and family of Rotarians are also welcome. Thanking you all, Clare and Bill

ROTARY CLUB OF BEAUMARIS HALF YEARLY REPORT TO MEMBERS

Your Board hard at work making decision on be-half of your Club

This brief summary highlights our activities for the first half year, based on reports from Directors. Financial The General (Members) account is on budget and the Club remains financially sound. From 1 July we are introducing an annual payment system, and a small increase in dues, the first for some years. This is to ensure that all annual operating costs are cov-ered. There will be a discount for timely payment. The Project account is also in sound shape, and we have met all our budgeted programmes and pay-ments. Gross income from all sources, including the golf parking (yet to be received to account) is ap-prox. $29,000 and project payments are approx. $20,000. However the income includes $2700 grant payments not yet expended, plus sergeants fines, bank interest and so-on. Secretarial The Club Constitution and By-Laws have been fully revised and updated, and accepted by the Board, RI and Consumer Affairs. Members’ records are fully

up-to-date on the RI website.

Club Service The new Audio-visual equipment (paid with a grant received last year) has improved our speaker presentations, the website is working well and is cur-rently being updated, the newsletter is looking great and the program has been outstanding. Fellowship events have been popular and successful, and the roster system for hosting, chair, cash desk and audio-visual has been well received and supported by all. The shared Sergeant role also keeps the meetings lively and interesting. In summary the Club is running smoothly and well, thanks to the work of all those involved. I am especially pleased to see Members looking out for, and after, our guests. Fundraising The Variety Night was a lot of fun, and raised over $5000, plus we learned a lot of lessons on how to do it even better in future. We had a bonus oppor-tunity this year with two golf parking events, in sup-port of Huntingdale RC, which were perhaps not as much fun, but raised $16,500 for our Club. Our annual Mayoral Golf Day in April is looking very good, with preliminary estimate now increased to net $12,000.

International We supplied $2223 for mosquito nets and $2724 for more water wells on Sabu, and donated $250 to worthy causes. The team visited Sabu earlier in the year to review on-going needs and ensure funds are being used properly and advantageously. Community Organisation and implementation of the Seaview Traders Festival on behalf of Bayside Council and the Traders was a resounding success. We also as-sisted with the Concourse Festival at the invitation of Bendigo Bank, and even managed to raise $1300 as a bonus. Both these events helped raise our pro-file in the community and with Council. The Berendale School propagating house project was completed, fulfilling our commitment from last year. We hope to continue to support this worthy school. Arrangements are well in hand to provide ongoing support to the Beaumaris SLC as it rebuilds its Club. We are sponsoring encouragement awards for the 13-18 age group. At Christmas we provided 48 Christmas Puddings through the local church groups, which were served to over 500 people. The Team has raised $3363 through grants and DSG’s to keep them well under budget, and have managed to achieve a great deal while keeping costs to approx. $1000. New Generations Chris Martin has taken over the reins, with Julie Young strongly supporting Interact, which is well sup-ported again this year by the Students. We sup-ported two students to the National Youth Science Forum at a cost of $4600, and we are hoping they will make a presentation to the Club shortly. MU-NA, RYPEN and RYLA are coming up in the second half of the year. Foundation We made our annual donation of approx. US$110 per member early in the year, plus a reduced pay-ment to Polio Plus (as suggested by District). Total $5100.

Membership During the year we have lost John and Joanne Lafranchi, Bronwyn Paterson (who was transferred to a City Office and intends to join another Club) and Bill and Clare McAlaney (who transferred overseas and have joined a local Club). We have welcomed new Members Vratka Pokorna, Geoff Stringer and Glenda Laughton, have appli-cations in process from Martin Fothergill and Larry Jackson, and have expressions of interest from Da-vid Abbott and Zillay Batool, although they have yet to seek applications. Feedback from new and recent Members, and visit-ing Guests, has been largely positive, and has been incorporated into our processes. Public Relations and Marketing The above activities have helped to increase our profile in the local community, and our relationship with Council remains strong. We have featured in the Bendigo Bank newsletter and Coffee Club News, but have not had much luck with local press. Our website is attractive and informative, and links to our newsletter. General I am very thankful and grateful to all the Members for their support during the first half of my year as President. I could not possibly have asked for more, and in fact have hardly had to ask for anything. It just seems to happen, which is exactly as it should be. The Club is strong and healthy, and our Avenues of Service are continuing to grow and develop, thanks to the commitment of our Members. Our new-er Members are active within the Club, and have already become firm friends. I look forward to our continued success over the second half of the year. President James

Community Service Half Yearly Report Seaview Festival The club was approached by Mark Owens from the Bayside Council to meet with him and the President of the Seaview Traders, Rosie Larag with a view to organising a street festival to celebrate the finalisa-tion of the beautification of the busy shopping strip. Greg Every volunteered to assist the traders who need to incorporate and submit a busi-ness case to the Bayside Council in order to receive funding. Greg met with the traders eve-ry Tuesday evening for about 6 weeks to put everything in place for the festival. On Saturday 21st November the strip shopping centre conducted their first Festival with all traders getting in to the spirit of the event and with many Rotarians assisting with marshalling and generally providing a presence. This organising by Greg and the support provided by a great number of members was appreciated by both the traders and the council and has had a positive impact on the club’s relationship with the Council. There was no cost to the club nor income derived however this will be rectified in future years when it is expected that the club will be able to conduct fund raising activities at these festivals. Concourse Event

Contact was made with the new President of the Beau-maris Concourse Traders Association (Kerry Leahy Branch Manager Westpac) where there was increased interest

by the traders in conducting a number of festival type events. Their first was the pre Christmas festival which ran from 5 – 8 pm on Friday 2nd December. The Beau-maris Branch of the Bendigo Community Bank donated the costs of a giant blow up slide and a child's ride and the club, through Rob Fenton was asked to collect and

keep the money for these rides. This event had great summer weather, big crowds and many kids who wanted to enjoy the rides. Despite the delayed start and the $2 per ride charged, the club raised nearly $1,300. Again there was a large number of volunteers from the club and high probability of in-volvement in future events at a location that is ideal for street festivals Berendale School Berendale School has traditionally been one of the local beneficiaries of choice for funds raised at the annual Bayside Mayoral Golf day at Royal Melbourne. This year Berendale asked whether the club could assist with a greenhouse and through the efforts of David Greenall, past member John Lafranchi and a group of able bodied but constructionally challenged members, a greenhouse was purchased, a concrete slab laid and a structure was erected (over 4 days). Actually it was a very difficult and challenging job with the best engi-neers in the club poring over plans in the pouring rain. Despite the difficulties faced, members including Presi-dent James, Ken, Malcolm S, Bob, potential member Martin, Malcolm P and PP Peter did a fine job in finish-ing this project. Beaumaris Life Saving Club The Club was requested by Beaumaris Lifesaving Club to sponsor their 2011-12 Youth Training programme at their facility at Dalgety Road Beach Beaumaris. The programme is for youth aged 13-18 and partici-pants are given training in all aspects of lifesaving.

They have a points system which takes participants to four different levels and at each level they are given an en-couragement award. The sponsorship involves providing these awards; at an approximate cost of $100 per student on average (not all students attain the highest level). This was seen as an excellent Community Development project and the Board agreed to contribute $2,100 to the B.L.S.C on the recommendation of David Greenall and Adrian Culshaw. Christmas Donation This year the recipients of the members Christmas dona-tions were the Bayside Community Church and the Black Rock Uniting Church. Both were provided with 48 Christ-mas puddings to be served at the Christmas lunch for members of the community in need. These puddings were served to over 500 people at Christmas. Well done members.

Fellowship Night; Japan Inn Those who attended the Fellowship Night at the Japan Inn could not help but have a good time. There was plenty of food for the money so whoever did the negotiating should be con-gratulated. The odd dish did take a while to emerge but that did nothing to reduce the volume of noise emanating from our end of the room. Overall the quality was very good and the value at $30 excellent. Kerrie took us on a nostalgic trip back to our youth by holding a Rose tasting and associat-ed quiz. Of course the company was exceptional. Well done Tony & Kerrie.

Mental Health Night Plans are well under way for this years Mental Health Forum to be conducted on 21st March 2012. Speakers include Professor David Castle, Janet Hopkins from Lan-tern in Moorabbin and Ali and Dina Halkic who lost their 17 year old son to suicide. Gaytana Adorna who conducts a health and wellbeing program “Best Medicine” on Southern FM 88.3 Communi-ty Radio will be the host for the evening. The Beaumaris Branch of the Bendigo Community Bank approved a grant application to assist with the running of this important event. Bob McArthur Director Community Services
