President Report

The good weather re-turned for our Farmers market on Saturday mak-ing it a great day for eve-ryone. Once again thanks to all those mem-bers who make this hap-pen every month come rain or shine.

We had a good Board meeting last Tuesday where, among other matters, it was decided to press on with the $32.50 while we see how numerate we are and while we explore some possibilities with VGC. Our Treasurer Lynda Doutch and Sectary Trish Smyth attended, straight off the plane from their Alaskan adventures, and managed to stay awake until near the end! Lynda has also become a grand-mother whilst being away.

We had some sad news during the week that Dick Garner of the RC Hampton who recently moved to NZ has died. All of us who knew him admired Dick as a man and a great Rotarian. We have no more details at this stage. Also, Max Darby is in Hospital for a few days suffering from Atrial fibrillation. He hopes to be back on deck soon.

Di Hone is having her first fundraiser for the Highlands Foun-dation on Wednesday 16th October. Come to a Bottle Brush night to challenge your inner Van Gogh with a glass of wine in one hand and a brush in the other. Details are in this IN GEAR

This week we meet again at VGC at the usual time. Guest speaker is Jeff Shaw on the Give A Care Foundation.

Farmers Market Report

Our Farmers Market weather hoodoo has been well and truly broken! After a trouble-free setup in our traditional spot near the goal posts, the day brought superb sunshine and very pleasant temperatures.

A steady stream of visitors began arriving early to take advantage of the conditions. The crowd built throughout the morning and reached a peak around 11 am. There seemed to be quite a few new faces among the regulars and a lot of children. The live music added to the relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The Animal Petting Farm returned this month and was a hit with the very young. A good number of our 2019/20 Farmer Market Calendars were handed out as patrons headed home, suggesting that some were already thinking of a future visit.

There were 53 stall holders in total with a few new ones among them. It's refreshing to see new things being tried. Of the stall holders I managed to speak to towards the end of the market, all (including the newcomers) were happy with the outcome for the day.

Hats off to our cheery, hard-working BBQ team who were kept very busy. We had to buy more bacon mid-morning and ran out of rolls at 11:30. We were down to our last half-loaf of bread when I looked at midday. I noted queues at our BBQ stall and the nearby coffee stall sever-al times during the morning and our tables and chairs were very well utilised.

The Brighton Bowling Club raffle to raise funds for the Food for Change project was reportedly successful. The

raffle will be drawn of Sunday 13th October at the Fund-raiser Day at Brighton Bowling Club.

Towards the end of the market a lost child was reported to us near the Wood Street. I was impressed by how quickly our Rotarians swung into action and fanned out through the grounds to locate the boy. He was quickly found to the relief of a worried grandmother. To all of you who volun-teered your time and helped make the day such a success a very big thank you!

Recognising Success Often Rotary does not get recognised for the work they do in the local and international community. 3 members of Doncaster Rotary helped establish East Timor Roofing 20 years ago and still remain on the Board. For-mer President and PM of Timor Leste Xanana Gusmao said it was the most successful NGO project in the country's short history.

Interests: The share market, sometime story writer, golf - 42-year Member of Victoria Golf club

The Royal Flying Doctor Service Volunteer. But, the one that really gets me is Raise Mentoring- for which I’d be delighted to encourage people to consider.

About Raise

Raise Foundation is a registered Australian charity which provides mentoring programs for young people in high schools and in the community. Our mentoring programs provide a community of support around young people. Mentoring from a positive role model during the critical teenage years provides a nurturing pathway for young people to feel supported.

The Problem

In Australia, 1 in 6 people are aged 12-24

Suicide is the highest reason for death of young people

1 in 3 are without adequate work (ie either un- or under-employed)

Young people face unemployment rates at over twice that of the general population 1 in 10 are completely disengaged from education, employment and training

1 in 4 have a mental health condition Only 36% of young people will seek professional

help Australia has the fourth highest rate of teenage

pregnancy in the western world Vision A powerful youth mentoring movement creating thriving communities across Australia. Mission To impact youth wellbeing and engagement through early intervention mentoring programs in schools and communi-ties. Purpose To ensure young people feel heard, valued and supported. Andy spoke about his personal feelings about being in-volved in the program as a mentor in a local Secondary school. Following six hours of training he participated in an introductory session with students (age range a 11 to 15) and one of the students choose him to be a mentor. They have met for 20 weeks now with discussions being informal and unstructured. The sessions end after 22 weeks after which all contact ceases. Andy stated that he is really sure who get more benefit, the student or mentor so he would absolutely recommend the experience to any worthy persons of good character, it’s by far the best thing he is involved with. There are fifteen ladies and only male working at a local school. They are without exception the kindest group of people imaginable. More mentors are needed however males are really needed and appreciated. In short it’s a win-win situation for anyone interested in giving practically plus one walks away knowing you’ve made a difference.
