We must forgive as the father of the prodigal son did, or we will be like his older unforgiving son (see Lk 15:20, 28). Forgive — or risk quitting life, love, and God. 24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEHAVE YOU QUIT FORGIVING,GIVING, AND LIVING?

"Let Me alone, then, that My wrath may blaze up against them to consume them." —Exodus 32:10

The Lord was about to end His relationship with His chosen people, but He forgave them instead. Jeremiah wanted to quit his prophetic ministry (Jer 20:9) after he did not forgive the Israelites (see Jer 18:23). If Jesus hadn't prayed on Calvary for His Father to forgive us (see Lk 23:34), He may have been severely tempted to come down from the cross and quit the plan of salvation (see Mt 27:42).

Unforgiveness usually results in our quitting something the Lord wants us to continue, while forgiveness keeps it going on. If a wife refuses to forgive her husband, she may quit her marriage or at least quit trying in her marriage. If parents quit forgiving their children, they might easily quit parenting them. At best, they will just go through the motions.

Unforgiveness is the main cause of divorce, abuse, dysfunction, and neglect. When we quit forgiving seventy times seven (see Mt 18:22), we quit giving, loving, and trying. Eventually, we quit life and eternal life. If we quit forgiving one person, we quit our relationship with the Lord, for we pray that He forgive us as we forgive others (Mt 6:12). We must forgive as the father of the prodigal son did, or we will be like his older unforgiving son (see Lk 15:20, 28). Forgive — or risk quitting life, love, and God. Prayer: Father, I decide now to accept Your grace to forgive all those who have ever hurt me in any way.

Thought of the week: Criticism is something we can avoid easily by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.

What does it mean that there are two types of contrition? And what are those types? For contrition to be perfect, there must be a real interior sorrow and repentance of one's sins. The Catholic Church teaches that there are two types of contrition, the perfect contrition and the imperfect contrition. The perfect contrition involves sorrow out of true love for God. You are sorry for having offended God and you want to return in a state of grace to improve your relationship with God. In the imperfect contrition, your sorrow is based on the fear of eternal punishment. You are not preoccupied with having offended God by your sinful nature; you just want to avoid going to hell.

Sept 16: Sts. Cornelius and Cyprian -Cornelius: "There is one God and one Christ and but one episcopal chair, originally founded on Peter, by the Lord's authority. There cannot, therefore, be set up another altar or another priesthood. Whatever any man in his rage or rashness shall appoint, in defiance of the divine institution, must be a spurious, profane and sacrilegious ordinance" (St. Cyprian, The Unity of the Catholic Church).Cyprian: “You cannot have God for your Father if you do not have the Church for your mother.... God is one and Christ is one, and his Church is one; one is the faith, and one is the people cemented together by harmony into the strong unity of a body.... If we are the heirs of Christ, let us abide in the peace of Christ; if we are the sons of God, let us be lovers of peace” (St. Cyprian, The Unity of the Catholic Church).

Sep 20: Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang and Companions: We marvel at the fact that the Korean Church was strictly a lay Church for a dozen years after its birth. How did the people survive without the Eucharist? It is no belittling of this and other sacraments to realize that there must be a living faith before there can be a truly beneficial celebration of the Eucharist. The sacraments are signs of God's initiative and response to faith already present. The sacraments increase grace and faith, but only if there is something ready to be increased.
