Most people take Jesus' words as a suggestion and encouragement to be humble and help the poor. Jesus, however, indicates that His words are to be taken much more seriously when He concluded His command with the words: "You should be pleased that they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid in the resurrection of the just" (Lk 14:14). Jesus' call to humility and service is of ultimate significance. When Jesus commands us to humble ourselves, it means much, much more than these words coming from anyone else. Jesus washed the feet of the apostles (Jn 13:4ff) and "humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross!" (Phil 2:8) Jesus has humbled Himself by giving Himself to us in Holy Communion. He is so humbled that He doesn't look like God or even like a man. He looks like bread and wine. When this crucified, eucharistic God-Man speaks of humbling ourselves, He speaks with a depth and love far beyond anything we have ever heard. Humble yourself — by Jesus' standards. Prayer: Jesus, teach me to be "gentle and humble of heart" (Mt 11:29). 22th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMETHE HUMBLEST HUMBLENESS

"For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled and he who humbles himself shall be exalted." —Luke 14:11

Jesus invites us to humble ourselves by taking the lowest place (Lk 14:10) and by inviting "beggars and the crippled, the lame and the blind" to eat with us (Lk 14:13).

Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Bible Study The Bible plays a vital role in the life of the Catholic Church. In fact, we are called to immerse ourselves daily in the Scriptures. But many of us get lost when we actually dive into the Bible, and our time spent can be more frustrating than fruitful. We are reading a collection of writings drafted by an ancient people, in an ancient culture. But Scripture is nothing less than the Living Word of God, and it is meant just as much for us as for those who lived thousands of years ago. To deal with this challenge we have chosen an exciting Bible Study program provided by Jeff Cavins, an internationally recognized speaker who has a deep love for Jesus Christ and who communicates his zeal with clarity and enthusiasm. His program is called the "The Great Adventure Bible Study System.” We are currently using this study:

Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom

We will begin our fall class on Wednesday Sept. 4 at 6:30 PM. Come and enjoy as we study God's word. Witness the fascinating story of our faith, and see how you, at this moment in your life, fit into God's plan for all humanity. Please come, all are welcome. For further details or questions please contact Clifton Britten @ 517-8747 or 248-7559. The Church "forcefully an specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful ... to learn the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ, by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures. 'Ignorance of Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.' " CCC 133

Thought of the week: Until we are perfect, we cannot expect a perfect government.

The month of September: is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Devotion to the sorrows of the Virgin Mary dates from the twelfth century, when it made its appearance in monastic circles under the influence of St. Anselm and St. Bernard. The Cistercians and then the Servites undertook to propagate it. It became widespread in the fourteenth and especially the fifteenth centuries, particularly in the Rhineland and Flanders, where Confraternities of the Sorrowful Mother sprang up. It was in this context that the first liturgical formularies in her honor were composed. A provincial council of Mainz in 1423 made use of these in establishing a "Feast of the Sorrows of Mary" in reparation for Hussite profanations of her images. In 1494 the feast appeared in Bruges, where the Precious Blood of Christ was venerated; later on it made its way into France. It did not, however, become widespread in France before Benedict XIII included it in the Roman Calendar in 1727 and assigned it to the Friday before Palm Sunday. Some Churches had previously celebrated this feast during the Easter season. Others, however, celebrated the Joys of the Blessed Virgin during the Easter season, as is still done today at Braga. In some places it was entitled "Recollection of the Feasts and Joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary”

September 3, Saint Gregory the Great: Gregory was content to be a monk, but he willingly served the Church in other ways when asked. He sacrificed his own preferences in many ways, especially when he was called to be Bishop of Rome. Once he was called to public service, Gregory gave his considerable energies completely to this work.

Quote: "Perhaps it is not after all so difficult for a man to part with his possessions, but it is certainly most difficult for him to part with himself. To renounce what one has is a minor thing; but to renounce what one is, that is asking a lot" (St. Gregory, Homilies on the Gospels).
