Immaculate Conception and St. Nicholas Catholic Churches FEBRUARY 7, 2016 :: 5 th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Father’s Findings: This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday that begins the fourth season of the church liturgical year that we call Lent. Ash Wednesday is always about 40 days before Easter, but since Easter is determined by the cycle of the moon, the date for Easter and Ash Wednesday can vary each year by about a month. This year Ash Wednesday is February 10, eight days earlier than last year. For those of you who actually count the days, you will find 47 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, but, because Sunday is the day of the Resurrection, we skip over Sundays when we calculate the length of Lent. Therefore, in the Western (Roman rite) Church, Lent always begins on Ash Wednesday, the seventh Wednesday before Easter. Lent is the season during which we prepare ourselves for the most important feast day of the year, Easter Sunday. On Ash Wednesday, blessed ashes will be traced in the form of a cross on a person’s forehead while reciting these or similar words, "Remember, man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return". The distribution of ashes reminds us of our mortality and calls us to repentance. The ashes that we receive are also a reminder of our sinfulness, and many leave them on their foreheads all day as a sign of humility. Two Masses with the distribution of ashes will be celebrated on Ash Wednesday, the first at 9:00am in Osakis and the second at 7:00pm in Belle River. Two Communion Services that include the distribution of ashes will also be celebrated on Ash Wednesday in Osakis at 3:45pm and 7:00pm. There will be no morning Mass on Ash Wednesday in Belle River. The Church emphasizes the penitential nature of Ash Wednesday by calling us to fast from food between meals (fasting) and abstain from eating meat (abstinence). Catholics who are over the age of 18 and under the age of 60 are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, which means that they can eat only one complete meal and two smaller meals during the day, with no food in between. Catholics who are over the age of 14 are also required to abstain from eating any meat, or any food made with meat, on Ash Wednesday as well as every Friday during Lent. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only two days that require both abstinence and fasting, though many Catholics also choose to fast on other Fridays during Lent. Many people choose to give up other things they like during Lent as another form of penitential fasting. By giving something up we learn to control a particular part of our lives, which leads to greater self-discipline even when Lent is over. As such, in Lent we are able to learn, examine, and get our material excesses under control. Almsgiving and prayer are other activities associated with Lent. Again this year, “Best Lent Ever” is offering an alternative to simply giving up things for Lent, but to grow in faith by prayer and acts of charity during Lent. Sign up for daily emails during Lent at: BestLentEver.com. As mentioned above, Sundays are not a part of the Lenten fast, because Sunday is always a feast of the Resurrection. However, the Sundays of Lent are still a part of the Lenten liturgical season in the Western (Roman rite) Church, and the worship services tend to be more simple and austere than normal. They lack the Gloria, and the joyous "alleluias" of the Easter season. The Western liturgical color of Lent is violet, symbolizing royalty and penitence. This year in Osakis the environment committee will be encouraging parishioners towards acts of mercy following the Pope’s theme: The Year of Mercy. Sample acts of mercy will be available at the distribution of ashes to take and consider. A full sheet of sample acts of mercy will be on the bulletin board at the entrance of the church, with a web site that has more suggestions. More will take place during Lent that will be announced later. BULLETIN DEADLINE: Tuesdays by 5:00pm Email Jennifer at [email protected] Fr. FEBRUARY 7, 2016 :: 5th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Father’s Findings:

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday that begins the fourth season of the church liturgical year that we call Lent. Two Masses with the distribution of ashes will be

in Belle River. Two Communion Services that include the distribution of ashes will also

be celebrated on Ash Wednesday in Osakis at 3:45pm and 7:00pm. There will be no

morning Mass on Ash Wednesday in Belle River.

It is not only Catholic Schools week, but also I Love to Read month. The students will be celebrating I Love to Read month in a variety of ways. The book The Chocolate Touch will be read school wide. The teachers will be doing a variety of age appropriate activities in each of their classrooms. I am requesting that you send your child’s favorite chocolate recipe to school. These will be hung around school for everyone to read. Once again, a book exchange will take place on Tuesday, March 1st. Any student wishing to participate needs to bring a book at their reading level in good condition; no books with torn pages, writing or coloring in will be accepted.

Here’s What’s Happening in Grades 3 & 4!

To celebrate Catholic Schools Week, the 3rd & 4th graders listed ways that we grow in God’s way each day.

The 4th graders learned how to use compasses to measure around irregular shapes.

We love to read! We will be celebrating I Love to Read Month in February.

The Red Cross gave a presentation about disaster preparedness. Each student decorated a pillowcase to take home to create their own emergency kit.
