Dear Participants, Members, and Guests: Welcome to the 49th Annual Meetings of the Illinois Economics Association! IEA has a long tradition of providing opportunities to economics students from throughout the state, and many graduate students will be presenting their research during the conference. This year we are delighted to present 61 papers, panel discussions, and other events across 19 sessions, including the Graduate Student Paper competitions. We are especially excited to have Chris Blattman, Ramalee E. Pearson Professor of Global Conflict Studies at the University of Chicago, as our Keynote Speaker this year. Professor Blattman will be speaking to us about his latest work on poverty. Many people deserve recognition for their help and support in organizing this conference. We are grateful to DePaul University and the DePaul Economics Department for their financial support and for the use of their excellent facilities. Special thanks to Department Chair Tony Krautmann and to Steve Carlton for their financial, operational, and administrative assistance. Cengage Learning has generously sponsored the reception on Friday evening, and we encourage everyone to visit the Cengage display during the conference. Thank you to Carol Martell for her help with the registration process, and Paul E. Peterson for organizing the Graduate Student Paper competition. My deepest appreciation to Paul E. Peterson for his leadership as IEA President, and to Past Presidents Jin Choi and Kent Grote, and Past President and current IEA Treasurer Mike Wenz, for their advice and guidance during the past year. Finally, thanks to all of you for your participation that makes this conference possible. I am honored to be part of this year’s event, and I hope you will join us again next year. Sincerely, Stacey L. Brook IEA President-Elect Department of Economics, DePaul University
