This month has been a particularly inspiring one, especially because I travelled for most of it, which really

helped me to appreciate what I had left behind. It’s so easy to get caught up in the humdrum of everyday life

and spiral into a routine that’s neither pleasant nor satisfying. Life can get dull from time to time, and taking a

break and allowing yourself to relax and calm down for a moment, I have found, is extremely therapeutic.

Same can probably be said for you dear traveller. If you happen to be visiting Malta on holiday then you

know exactly what I’m talking about, and if you happen to be on your way home, then you can probably

share my current peace of mind.

March in Malta is exciting for many reasons. Firstly, the majority of what we consider ‘bad weather’ is

now behind us, and everywhere looks fresher and greener. Easter preparations and celebrations will

also feature heavily this month, with the Lenten season finally over and all the food and activities that

generally follow suit. If you happen to be in Malta around this time I strongly suggest visiting the Good

Friday celebrations held in various villages across Malta and Gozo – they’re sombre, intense and somewhat

macabre, but they’re really something special if you’ve never been to one of these processions before.

As for the food; you’ve absolutely got to try the kwareżimal, which are basically soft almond and honey

biscuits flavoured with rose water. They’ve been my favourite ever since I was a kid and are really something.

Once again, thank you for choosing to fly with us – I sincerely hope that you enjoy leafing through this issue

of il-Bizzilla as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together.

Until next month!

Dana

Hello And Welcome on board! Thank you for choosing Air Malta.

March is an important month for us as we start flying our summer 2016 flight schedule. This season we plan to

carry over one million passengers and have planned a great selection of routes with the best flight timings.

We have improved our schedules on Manchester, Catania, Vienna, Lyon and Marseille and increased

frequencies on Berlin over last year. Air Malta will continue to be the largest operator to London and the UK

by offering a selection of 30 weekly flights to/from seven airports. This summer we will also fly, to Brussles

nine times a week.

It’s a great time to visit Malta in March. This month we celebrate Easter during which there are a lot of

activities and local traditions which are very popular with locals and tourists alike. During the Holy Week one

should consider visiting one of the many popular events which are organised, including the seven churches

visitation on Maundy Thursday; Good Friday processions; and the ‘Irxoxt’ feast on Easter Sunday.

We love to hear your feedback on what we could do better. Visit www.airmalta.com/wearelistening to

answer a few short questions and you can get 10% off your next Air Malta flight.

When the air is humid, high levels of moisture in the air seep into your hair

BEAUTY

The infamous tagline ‘Welcome to sunny Malta’ boasts one of Malta’s most prized treasures; beautiful sunny weather.

However, with that comes more than a hefty dose of humidity.

When the air is humid, high levels of moisture in the air seep into your hair. This is how the all too familiar 'halo' of frizzies can appear, not to mention whispy ends and the dreaded kink. Maltese hair does tend to be thicker and more susceptible to this sort of bad hair days, yet many people with finer hair have experienced a massive difference in hair texture in our weather conditions.

When we caught up with one of Malta’s leading hair stylists, Noella Pisani, she gave us insight on how best to handle these bad hair day episodes.

Frizz-Free and FlawlessWhether you’re sightseeing around Malta’s cultural hotspots or lazing by the beach, you'll want your locks to

look picture perfect. If you weren't warned about the humidity that lingers in the Maltese air, you won't want to stray from this frizz-free advice. Melanie Vella catches up with hair stylist Noella Pisani to get top notch tips

for better hair days in Malta’s unpredictable and somewhat humid weather.

Many people may be familiar with the Brazilian technique. This is a keratin treatment where keratin and a preservative solution are applied to create a barrier against moisture. This automatically creates a longer-lasting glossy affect on coarse hair. “I highly recommend this treatment for pretty much all hair types because the humidity is a problem we all face here in Malta.”

The right haircut is also important. Many people like to feather their hair, however this is not always suitable for all hair types. Feathering creates volume. A straighter cut can be better for those who have extremely thick hair. “It is important to go with whatever frames the face best, but your hairdresser should be able to give you good guidance,” says Noella.

“You will need to lay a strong frizz-free foundation by using a light shampoo and conditioner in the shower. using a lightweight moisturising formula will inject your hair with the hydration it needs so that it does not soak up excess moisture from the humid air,” advises Noella. Avoid towel drying your hair as this ruffles up the tiny hairs and creates frizz. Instead, press out the water gently.

Noella adds that rather than fighting against your natural hair type, the best way to style hair is to go with the hairs’ natural flow. “I have naturally thick wavy hair so I tend to blow dry my hair with big bouncy waves. People with curly hair should really embrace their curls when blowing drying their hair, while those with kinks could opt for a straight blow dry and then add a product that creates texture,” she suggests.

Hopping over to one of Malta’s leading hair salons for a quick blow dry is the easiest way to straighten out your beauty game. But for those who are more 'DIY', there are ways you can do this at home.

“Once you have touched up your hair with a blow dryer or straightening irons, a nifty trick is to finish off the look using the cool setting on your blow dryer. This will lock in the moisture. Finish with a light-hold hairspray, which will create a barrier against the moisture. Leaving your hair humidity ready.”

A popular trend at the moment is adding in a side braid, which can also hide those wispy bits.

Ta-da...what bad hair day?

A theatre built for honest delight

If you should go past the Manoel Theatre, Malta’s National Theatre, in Old Theatre Street, Valletta, you would not imagine that behind a quite

ordinary but newly-restored and elegant façade there is a small but magnificent theatre which seats 650 enthusiasts. This exquisite gem celebrates its 284th birthday this year. In fact the first ever public performance there – of Merope, a tragedy by Scipione Maffei and one of the most celebrated tragedies of its period – took place on 9 January, 1732. Two comedies which were performed by the French and Italian knights followed.

The Manoel, as it is affectionately known, is one of the oldest theatres in europe. It is similar in design to the Palermo theatre of the time. It is named after the Portuguese Grand Master of the Knights of st John, Antonio Manoel de Vilhena who built it ad honestam populi oblectationem (for

the honest entertainment of the people), as the inscription above the entrance still says. De Vilhena was a wealthy and lovable but firm Portuguese aristocrat of royal descent. The inscription on his magnificent mausoleum in St John’s Co-Cathedral affirms this with the words ‘he was not elected but born a prince'.

Our national theatre was originally known as the Teatro Pubblico, changed to Teatro Reale, and in 1866 named Manoel Theatre.

Prior to its erection, plays and theatrical productions in general were held in the great hall of the various auberges. When the French occupied Malta in June 1798, a troupe of Italians were acting at the Manoel Theatre. It is recorded that the directors of the theatre had been ordered by General Junot to pay the actors, as well as members of the orchestra, double their wages. But that is another story.

committee regularly engages local and foreign artists who give solo recitals, mime, musicals, chamber music concerts, opera, operetta, ballet and plays in Maltese, english and sometimes Italian. The embassies regularly engage performers from their own country. Performances follow breathlessly throughout the theatre season, which commences in October with an important concert by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and a gifted local or foreign musician. In December it has become traditional to produce a pantomime which is probably the most popular event of the year. And look out for The Valletta International Baroque Festival in January which is popular with locals and visitors, many of whom come specifically to enjoy it. This year’s programme is truly magical.

CULTURE

Grand Master de Vilhena set up the Fondazione Manoel, which, among other projects, financed the building of Fort Manoel on Manoel Island, the extension of the fortifications and the suburb of Floriana, and the erection of the present gate to Mdina. This theatre was completed in 10 months and has a chequered history which reached a low point after the opening of the Royal Opera House in 1866 when, it is said, it was turned into a dormitory for the homeless. But when the Royal Opera House was burnt down in 1873, these were turned out and grand opera once more held there until the Royal Opera House was rebuilt. It was restored to its former glory in 1960. During those years it was also a venue for Carnival masked balls or, as they are known to this day, veglioni, as it had often been under the Knights. At one time it was also turned into a cinema. (It is worth noting that from 1768 to 1770 the impresario was a woman, a certain Natala Farrugia).

When it reopened its doors in 1960 it was with a performance by the Ballet Rambert, and the theatre has continued to give pleasure to its patrons ever since. The Government-appointed management committee, with limited resources, has provided its patrons with a balanced fare of music, dance and drama by foreign and local artistes.

Although a large proportion of performances at the Manoel Theatre – this applies especially to plays – are produced by private companies which book the theatre for the days of the performances, the management

20 CULTURE

The Manoel also has an active supporters group, Friends of the Manoel, who apart from regularly attending the Manoel performances, also organise, talks, lectures and recitals, and contribute to certain projects.

The list of world-renowned artists who have performed at the Manoel since its grand opening in 1960 is quite impressive. Famous pianists have included Louis Kentner, Moura Lympany, Michael Ponti and John Ogden, besides the cream of Maltese musicians.

There have been various singers too, including Kiri Te Kanawa, Katia Ricciarelli, Boris Christoff, besides in recent times Malta’s own soprano Miriam Gauci and tenor Joseph Calleja, and other soloists too numerous to mention.

Visitors who do not have the opportunity to attend a performance at the Manoel

Theatre should however, make it a point to take a guided tour.

The theatre continues to be lovingly restored and maintained for this is an ongoing project. At present Management is working on the acclimatization of the theatre so that performances can take place all the year round in a comfortable temperature.

The Manoel’s magnificent ceiling, with its 22-carat gold leafing and glittering main chandelier, its three tiers of boxes and their ornate rococo decorations, offer a splendid sight. Incidentally, the horseshoe-shaped theatre has some of the best acoustics on the island.

Manoel de Vilhena’s theatre continues to provide honest entertainment and dramatically fulfilling encounters. Those concerned about the continuation of civilised values cherish it and give it their patronage.

Take A Walk on the Wild SideMelanie Vella speaks to Andrew Cooper, medical student turned herbalist, who makes teas, natural remedies

and even delicious salads from the herbs and flowers that grow wild in Malta's countryside.

Page 23: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

NATURE 23

When walking in the scenic Maltese countryside you can admire breath-taking views and stop to smell the flowers. If you

take a closer look, you will find an array of herbs, plants and flowers that do more than just look pretty.

Andrew Cooper has long been collecting herbs and using them to make healing tea brews made from fresh wild herbs and fruits gathered from around Malta and Gozo.

He has been studying the healing aspect of herbs for the past seven years. “I was studying conventional medicine at university in edinburgh when I decided to take a year out to delve into the holistic approach to healing. This goes beyond the pharmaceutical therapy of symptoms. The use of herbs and natural remedies, as a consistent practice for healing, has been utilised for many

generations as therapeutic remedies. Though they were used much more as recent as 100 years ago, there is an increased need for their healing qualities to balance our modern lifestyle.

“Most of the herbs I use in my teas and natural remedies grow in abundance in Malta. I do not need to garden them myself,” says Cooper. He collects the herbs from places where there isn't too much pollution or dust, like the beautiful woodlands of Buskett Gardens in Siggiewi, so as to find plants that are not contaminated.

some plants are edible and can be cooked with meals while also having medicinal properties, other plants are specifically used as natural remedies.

Fennel or bużbież, is a liquorice-smelling plant with bouquetish flowers and multiple needle-like leaves with a soft

fluffy texture. It grows on waysides and ditches in arid land. The sweet-smelling leaves culinary herb make a fragrant seasoning for roasted potatoes and pork in local dishes. The root of the plant can be roasted with other vegetables. “Fennel is very good for digestion, it relieves gas and is good for soothing coughs,” explains Cooper.

The intoxicating fragrance of wild thyme is another signature accompaniment to any walk in the Maltese countryside. Sagħtar, in Maltese, grows in large expanses of garigue and in between rubble walls. This pungent herb is used to flavour vegetables, soups and other dishes to add an earthy kick.

stinging nettles or ħurrieq is also a very common plant found squeezing through nooks and crannies along roads and paths. This common weed is often used to make salads, pesto and even soup

that is considered to be a delicacy in scandinavia. It is rich in vitamins A, C, D, iron, potassium, manganese and calcium, and is a good source of nutrients for people who do not eat meat or fruit.

“It is one of the most valuable herbal remedies, used to treat arthritis, anemia, hay fever, kidney problems and pain, to build general body strength and detoxify the body.”

How many boxes of Italian imported rucola (rocket salad) have you purchased from the supermarket? In Malta, wild rucola grows abundantly in the countryside and is considered to have a richer taste. Known in Maltese as Gargir Isfar, the thick and leathery leaves are perfect for infusing salads with a crunchy peppery taste.

The blue-violet tones of blossoms that enrich the Maltese countryside are a medicinal herb called borage, or fidloqqom in Maltese. This green furry plant has big leaves and blue star-shaped flowers. When infused in tea or used as a garnish on salads, borage is very healthy for the lungs and helps to relieve stress. In traditional herbalism, borage is believed to give you courage.

Blending different herbs together and infusing them in tea can have therapeutic effects on different parts of the body. Knowing which herbs to combine, how to prepare them in the right way, and the correct dose of each to have maximum effect, is somewhat of an art form.

“Rather than buy variations of herbal teas from the supermarket, you can go for a walk in the countryside and pick up

some soothing plants to blend,” advises Cooper. “When picking herbs, do not pick too many leaves from the same plant. Take a few sprigs from the tops of many different plants of the same species and be sure not to uproot the whole plant.”

The same chamomile that is used in commercial tea bags can be found growing in the wild in Malta in April. “Drinking these teas as part of your daily routine can help to strengthen and support your nervous system and balance out your energy levels. They are great replacements for caffeinated teas, which tend to give a short term boost at the expense of long term sustenance of energy.”

The Maltese sea chamomile, or bebuna tal-baħar, is another variation of the plant. The tiny white and yellow flowers often grow by the coast and tend to be less flavourful than the traditional chamomile.

This species is endemic to Malta, which means the species is unique and therefore cannot be found anywhere else on earth. Malta has thousands of endemic species because, as an island, many species evolve independently and become unique because they are isolated. Many endemic species are rare, scarce and threatened.

For all those nature lovers who are interested in learning more about the wild herbs and plants that beautify the Maltese Islands, Cooper holds wild herb workshops where groups join him on hikes in the most scenic spots. He teaches people how to forage consciously, while also engaging in fascinating discussions about when to consume tea, their psychological effects and other insightful tips on natural remedies.

26 FITNESS

Bounce Your Way to Fit & Fun

I bounced into my first Fit & Fun trampolining class on a saturday morning thinking 'If I'm going to exercise on the weekend, it's going to have to be fun!'. If the exercise and music didn't do it for me/wasn't enough, the bubbly

instructor definitely sealed the deal. Valentina Santini, known quite aptly as Valentina Trampolina, brought her Fit & Fun mini trampoline project over to Malta last July when she moved to Malta from Croatia, after two years of regular visits.

What drove you to bring your Fit & Fun Trampoline project to Malta?

I have always been passionate about an active way of life, sports in general, good food, travelling, music and my trampoline classes. When I landed here the first time two

years ago, I felt at home. After doing some research into Maltese lifestyle, I was convinced everyone would fall in love with this particular form of exercise.

The Fit & Fun brand is a series of exercise techniques I created with a group of friends who are cardiologists, physiotherapists and pediatricians. It is a fun and effective aerobic exercise on an individual trampoline that strenghtens every part of the body and is safe and gentle enough for everyone to benefit from.

What do you love most about trampolining?

Everything! Once you over come your fear and step onto your trampoline, you let out the kid inside you who loves to jump. It is healthy, fun and different. Time flies and you find

Think you outgrew trampolines years ago? Melanie Vella reveals your next fitness hook. It's energetic, childish and a weight loss wonder.

27FITNESS

yourself smiling while jumping. People see results within the first week of jumping every day for 50 minutes a session.

How long have you been giving classes?

I have been a professional trainer for almost nine years now and I really love my job. I wouldn't even call it a job, it is my life mission. I started out teaching Pilates, which I still love and practice. After a while my curiosity grew so as I travelled, I completed courses in many fields of exercise. When you are so in love with your work, you always need to grow and challenge yourself. My challenge was to bring something new and fun to the world of fitness. I have been instructing trampoline classes for the past five years now and I have seen it gain popularity rapidly throughout europe.

How did you get into trampolining?

A study by NAsA scientists back in the 80's found that it activated a broader range of muscles than running. They

reported that 10 minutes of bouncing on a trampoline provides the same level of cardiovascular health benefits as 33 minutes of running. so why not take full advantage of the health benefits of jumping. After a year of research and excercising on mini trampolines, I created the Fit & Fun concept that's become my life project.

So what are the health benefits you speak of?

There are many benefits which differ according to your body type and structure, so I will just name a few:

- It prevents injuries and also cures them - stimulates your metabolism- Increases oxygen capacity- Improves your sense of balance- Increases oxygen circulation to tissues- Improves the circulation of the lymph through the

lymph glands- strengthens the heart (cardiovascular health)- Increases energy and sense of vitality

When you are so in love with your work, you always need to grow and challenge yourself

Page 28: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

28

- Firms and tones the muscles and helps you lose weight - slows down skin ageing- Reduces stress.

How does trampolining compare to jogging or traditional aerobics?

Jogging can be very strenuous on the lower limbs and feet. While jogging, the person's weight is pounding down on their joints, every time their foot hits the ground. In the long run, this can cause deterioiration of joints like the knees and feet.

Jumping on the trampoline releaves the joints of up to 80 per cent of the pressure. This is why trampolining is a suitable option for seniors, the physically challenged, and those recuperating from accidents or injuries.

Is trampoline fitness for everyone?

Absolutely. The programme can be adjusted to fit everyone's fitness levels. The programme is divided into Levels 1, 2 and Fit & Fun Kids.

What change do the participants experience after a few trampolining sessions?

Adrenaline and happiness are the first thing to strike your body when you first jump on the trampoline. Then you are

hooked. Trampolining facilitates and often speeds up the body's craving for a healthy lifestyle. The benefits of losing weight in a healthy and fun way is the most common change they experience.

How do you add your own burst of flavour to the mix?

I am a very positive and energetic person and I love to jump. I enjoy dancing and bouncing around during the classes which inevitably adds to the fun and excitement. I love joking with my clients to keep them motivated, and they end up becoming my closest friends.

What are your future plans for trampolining in Malta?

I just landed in Malta, so I have been trampolining here for three months at a popular gum in sliema and classes are already fully booked. I would like to implement the Fit & Fun programme in more gyms and I plan to hold teacher training so that trampolining can spread to as many people as possible.

My ultimate aim would be to have my own Fit & Fun place where I could do more trampolining classes per day – Level 1 for the beginners, Level 2 for those who want to step it up a notch, Fit&Fun for Kids and Moms & Kids classes.

adrenaline and happiness are the first thing to strike your body when you first jump on the trampoline

FESTIVITIES

And so it’s Easter Sunday

Up to some years ago the 40 days of Lent between Ash Wednesday and easter sunday formed, for Catholics, a period of fasting

and penance which culminated in the Holy Week ceremonies. These matters used to be taken much more seriously in days gone by than they are now. A Maltese proverb severely warns those who fail to observe the fast on Ash Wednesday: ‘He that does not fast on Ash Wednesday will die before Lent is out.’ Well, an educated population no longer fears such proverbs and threats. Practicing Catholics, however, still fast on Ash Wednesday.

On the Friday preceding Palm Sunday the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows is borne in processions all over the island. The most popular is the procession which starts from Ta’ Ġieżu church in Valletta. There is a great deal of devotion towards Our Lady who is followed by innumerable men, women and children, some of them walking barefoot in fulfilment of a vow or a grace received.

In the days of the Knights of st John the conventual clergy filed in procession in st John’s Cathedral on each Friday during Lent. Their face was covered in a black veil - hence the name processio nigra (black procession) given to this procession.

On Palm Sunday, palm leaves and olive sprigs are blessed before High Mass and are then distributed to the faithful and even exchanged between friends. some of these sprigs are kept in the church till Ash Wednesday of the following year. Olive branches are also jealously guarded in private houses and one sometimes sees them hanging

on walls or placed behind the main door. They are also used by some, who are more superstitious than others, for fumigating rooms, children or animals to drive out the evil eye.

Sfineġ tal-bakkaljaw or cod fritters make a popular Lenten dish in some families. Many of us need little prompting to eat kwareżimal, a Lenten sweet. The ingredients adhere strictly to the old fasting rules of Lent and no eggs are used to make this delicious sweet made primarily of almonds and honey.

Fasting and abstinence from meat is now only obligatory for Catholics on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, and Good Friday. up till the eucumenical Council, churches – of which there are over 350 in Malta – used to be draped in purple throughout the Lenten period: statues and paintings were covered in purple cloth, while the ringing of bells was prohibited, in keeping with the austerity demanded by the liturgy. The liturigical restrictions have been

relaxed but several traditions which are connected to Holy Week remain. One is the preparation of the Last supper table which takes place in various towns and villages to commemorate the institution of the sacrament of the eucharist at Christ’s last Passover.

In st Dominic’s church in Valletta, a lavishly prepared Last supper display is open to the public. The place of Jesus and that of each apostle is marked with plates of multi-coloured rice, large circular loaves of bread studded with almonds and sprinkled with sesame seeds (known in Maltese as qagħaq ta’ l-Appostli), fruit baskets and chalices, nuts and figs, olives and dates. The food is later distributed to less fortunate families in the parish. Other Last supper displays all over the island, re-create, as authentically as possible, the Jewish Passover feast. These displays are held on Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, and are certainly worth a visit. some are more lavish than others.

In Malta, as in sicily, the Christmas crib has its easter counterpart in the sepulkru, or altar of repose, of which there is one in practically every church. They are beautiful and masses of spring flowers, plates of vetch and sprouting grain adorn these sepulchres.

On Holy Thursday afternoon and Friday morning people visit the sepulkri, going from one church to another on what is known as the Round of the seven Churches, reciting prayers as they move from one church to another. This practice is no longer so widely practiced.

In some localities a Passion Play is staged, with actors drawn mostly from the village community.

However, few local traditions show the same signs of vitality as that of the Good-Friday procession. statues representing scenes from the Passion and Death of Our Lord – ranging from seven to as many as 14 - are carried through the streets of the town or

village by white-robed men. It is considered an honour to be one of those carrying these statues. Between one statue and another come young men, women and children dressed up as Biblical figures, Roman soldiers and other personages connected with the Passion. some carry Christ’s seven Last Words embroidered on banners made of purple or black velvet.

Others accompanying the procession include men wearing hoods with eye-slits, dressed in white robes, and walking barefoot, sometimes with chains fastened to their ankles and carrying heavy wooden crosses. These would be fulfilling a vow they had made for a grace received or simply as an act of penance.

There is certainly an air of suffering and martyrdom about these processions which belong to the religious baroque of southern Italy, sicily and spain. As specimens of Maltese popular art, these statues represent the highest form achieved in the papier mâché technique

which is believed to have been introduced to Malta by a sicilian lay brother.

The solemn mood of Good Friday changes on easter sunday when the ringing of church bells announces the Resurrection of Christ. Mid-morning a procession with the statue of the Risen Christ moves along the streets accompanied by the village band playing lively music – especially marches. At the end the way is cleared and the statue-bearers take a run to carry the Risen Christ triumphantly back into the church.

It is traditional to give children easter eggs and a figolla. This is made of pastry filled with marzipan, and icing. They come in various shapes: fish, mermaids, dolls, baskets of fruit, dogs, doves – according to the whim of the confectioner.

easter is the great Christian festival celebrated by Catholics the world over. Holy Week and easter sunday in Malta are colourful, austere and festive.

London callingA visit to London can be compared

to a world tour, yet still reflects traditional life in Britain. London is home to people from all corners of

the world. It has something for everyone: interesting old buildings, beautiful parks and gardens, some of the finest museums and monuments in the world, a fine range of sporting and recreational facilities, and some of the globe's best theatres and opera houses.

Then there are the crowded popular shopping streets with all the famous brands, royal palaces, traditional pubs, one of the largest zoos and, last but not least, the Old Docklands, bringing memories of the past distant oceans amid the once-grimy alleys, which have undergone dramatic changes while retaining all the past which echoes as you wander the streets.

London’s atmosphere is diverse. every part of the city has its own specific, distinct atmosphere. The city’s background or history explains this phenomenon. London developed slowly, spreading outwards as numerous small towns and villages merged together. Diversity still exists thanks to this historical background.

There is Westminster, with its government buildings of Whitehall and the Houses of Parliament; the colourful West end, a magnet for shoppers and entertainment seekers; elegant Mayfair for the well-off; lively Chelsea for the young and artistic; seedy soho with its night-life and dubs; and the City, the financial heart of the nation. Fashionable Kensington with its famous museums; Harrods with its renowned shopping; aristocratic

Belgravia; intellectual Bloomsbury, home to London university and the British Museum; Holborn and its law courts and, finally, the poor quarters of the east end with their colourful street markets - all together they make London the city of great contrast and variety.

'When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life,' is the popular saying generally uttered and referring to London.

The weather is not as bad as its reputation. The annual mean temperature is 9°C, with no great variations. In summer the average temperature is between 16 and 17°C and in winter between 2 and 4°C. The city’s population is around seven million, explaining why it is one of the largest cities in the world. But the City of London is often referred to as a square

mile, and only covers approximately 5,000 inhabitants.

London is home to evening entertainment, with music lovers particularly well catered for. soho is the area of strip clubs, but there are plenty of other pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants. For outdoor enthusiasts there are rowing boats in Hyde Park or Regents Park, and horse riding in Richmond Park. Canal trips are pleasant, especially along Regents Canal. Or why not take a night cruise on the Thames?

shopping is a must in London; no one can miss this shopping mecca, particularly Oxford Street, the city’s busiest and most popular street extending as far as Tottenham Court Road. The department stores, fashion shops and stores will keep anyone busy

and amazed at the fantastic bargains.

Transport is essential to the operation of a city such as London. The British capital has one of the most extensive urban railway systems in the world; in addition to the underground railway there is a network of suburban railways covering London and the surrounding region. For efficiency rather than sightseeing most travel is done by underground rail, although there is also considerable commuting by car, particularly in the outer boroughs. London has about 19,000 licensed taxis.

Railway services from London to Paris or Brussels through the Channel Tunnel run from Waterloo station.

London is definitely the capital city not to be missed by anyone who enjoys life.

high-flying dentistry

A Confident Smile!

Dr Jean Paul DemajoDENTAL & IMPLANT SURGEON

Trained in London and is now working in private practice in Malta.

M any years ago you suffered a blow to your front teeth and were forced to seek dental treatment.

Back then the options for cosmetic adjustments for severely broken teeth were limited to conventional metal-ceramic crowns. Today the options are endless with a whole new range of materials to choose from. The gold standard of today is all-ceramic metal-free crowns.

A Case Scenario

A young lady in her 40s has had two old anterior crowns on her incisors for the past 20 odd years. she is comfortable with her crowns as they do not cause her any discomfort. she is however very conscious of them as they stand out and due to their failing aesthetics, are first to be spotted when smiling.

Treatment plan

1. Patient examination and interview

2. Photography: a very important tool for the patient to point out the exact characteristics in the current teeth which she/he dislikes

3. Computer Projection and visual of final result

4. Patient approval of projected crowns

5. Choosing the materials for the projected all-ceramic crowns

6. Removal of old crowns and preparation of new all-ceramic metal-free crowns and two ceramic veneers.

7. simultaneous tooth whitening; laser and home whitening maintenance kit

8. Fitting of new crowns and cementation of veneers.

Advantages

• Very short timeframe one day.

• One or two appointments. May be even done in one appointment using CAD CAM technology and finished within a mornings work.

• Immediate result.

• Adjustment of centre-line, obtaining near symmetry.

DisAdvantages

• Additional veneers with lifespan limited to 10-15 years.

• Remaining teeth aren’t perfectly straight. Had the patient chosen an orthodontic modality prior to the construction of the new restorations, the midline would have been perfectly placed.

• Minor tooth preparation of veneered teeth.

Addressing this scenario is always painstaking for the patient. Reliving the trauma of many years ago, as well as having to undergo another dental procedure to correct the tooth, could be quite a hurdle. Very often people do not undergo the necessary treatment and keep living their everyday life with their front discoloured tooth or crown. It is a real shame as with only a little work and determination the results speak for themselves.

To analyse your options for treatment ask your dentist!

Għar Lapsi, Malta

With the temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnjadra Temples nearby, it’s easy to imagine the ancient temple-builders free-diving for fish in the clear, turquoise waters of this natural swimming hole. It’s still a local stronghold for swimming and snorkelling, with a wide variety of marine life living on the shallow, parallel reef systems and within the cave system, shot through with sunlight. some of the best snorkeling is located just outside the

cove, under the Dingli cliffs. Expect to see Posidonia seagrass as well as Painted Comber, Rainbow Wrasse, moray eels, cardinal fish and sponges.

Għar Lapsi is located about 1.5km north-west of the Blue Grotto as the crow flies (10 minutes or so by car) so leave time to head there afterwards for a post-snorkel boat ride to see the phosphorescent colours of the flora and fauna clinging to the underwater rocks. Filfla Island in the background makes for great photos.

Ċirkewwa, Malta

sitting pretty opposite Comino and Gozo, Ċirkewwa has a shallow reef that’s just right for snorkelers, backed by the deeper waters of the Gozo Channel. Parrot fish and cardinal fish are common here and you’ve got a good chance of coming across octopus, parrot fish or even coral shrimps. Moray eels might be lurking in the porous rocks and, if you look carefully, there could also be a Scorpion fish, paused, in perfect camouflage. There are lots of fireworms on the rocks too. The proximity of the channel, rich in nutrients, means that tuna or barracuda are occasionally seen cruising by. Below you, in a cavern, there’s the underwater statue of the Madonna here (at about 18m, so within range of experience free divers). A good entry point is opposite the Paradise Diving shop – look out for boat traffic.

UNDER THE SEA

Santa Marija Caves, Comino

The Blue Lagoon is the most famous spot on Comino for turquoise waters and sublime snorkeling, but unless you get there early (or stay on the island overnight, either at the hotel or in a tent), it’s incredibly crowded. santa Marija Bay is a great alternative snorkelling location. There’s lots of seagrass and the water can be stirred up but something surprising always turns up - look for crabs, sea anemones, lobsters and starfish. The bay has provided a safe haven for boats from classical times, with Roman wrecks found here; there’s also some very rare dune habitat behind the bay. The nearby santa Marija Caves are a good spot to find shoals of fish like Cow bream, saddled bream, octopus and eels.

Mġarr Ix-Xini, Gozo

Catapulted into the stratosphere by the prolonged presence of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as they filmed their movie ‘By the Sea’, Mġarr Ix-Xini is a wonderfully secluded bay in Gozo. It’s fun to access it by boat but you can also take the road that runs down from the Ta Ċenc cliffs and stops above the inlet, close to Sannat village. High cliff walls shelter the inlet from the wind so it’s usually calm. Octopus can be spotted here and in the sand at the bottom, you might see stargazers or catch a glimpse of the Flying Gurnard’s neon wings. There’s also an ancient watch tower here. Once you’ve dried off on the rocks, you can refuel at the excellent fish restaurant here.

Ħondoq ir-Rummien, Gozo

After the novelty of entering the water by bathing ladder, the clear waters here provide the perfect conditions for snorkeling several caves in this bay, which are right at water level and create microhabitats for a range of interesting marine creatures. You might see hermit crabs, sea cucumbers, and, if you’re lucky, the rare Noble Pen shell standing up in the seagrass beds. They are one of the largest bivalves in the world, reaching up to 80cm, and are indicators of good water conditions (leave them in place, they are highly endangered and protected). The site is located just below the village of Qala and has a small pebbly beach. There are gorgeous views of Comino from the water and very little development in the area, meaning that the ocean is extra clean and clear.

Azure Window, Gozo

Another crowded spot once the tourist day gets going, but you can get away from the hordes by leaping into the water near the Window itself. You need to walk over rough rocks to get there though, so go prepared – this is only for strong swimmers in calm conditions. surfacing beneath the limestone arch is a wonderfully different way to experience this iconic landmark and there are water level caves and fissures in the cliffs to explore (with care); the graduated light underwater makes for fabulous photos. You’ll see Damsel fish, Parrot fish and bream cruising around the gargantuan rocks that have fallen from the window above – this site will give you a taste of the underwater topography that has international divers raving about Malta, without all the hassle of the tanks.

The nearby Inland sea is also a major draw; the pebbled beach is lapped by seawater trapped in this former cave, with only a narrow channel through to the ocean beyond. You can snorkel through this, but pay attention to boat traffic – go early to avoid a collision.

PROPERTY

Have you ever dreamt of owning a luxurious apartment, set on a Laguna with your own private swimming platform? surrounded by blue skies and fresh air, far away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives yet close enough to all

the commodities you still need and crave in life? Well, you don’t need to retire to a remote destination to enjoy the luxury of such a lifestyle. Malta is the answer to this question.

The Laguna Marina Apartments is a relatively new project inspired by the elements – sea, sun and fresh air. These are three elements that Malta enjoys in abundance, however, it is the location of this project in conjunction with these elements that makes this project an even more attractive investment.

Located within the existing luxurious development of Portomaso in St Julian’s, this project is set on a superficial site area of 7,300m², with 44 apartments built over 7,568m² of floor area and approximately 100m² of terrace area. each apartment has direct access to the man-made Laguna, and one can enjoy swimming, relaxing and lounging in this idyllic setting secluded from an otherwise extremely cosmopolitan busy life. An inspiring location surrounded by the sound of waves, this place is set to be a place of total relaxation, privacy and rejuvenation.

A lot of attention was paid to each aspect of this project. In fact the architects for the project have allowed space for three artificial islands to be set within the Laguna, each to be graced with Mediterranean plants and trees for shade. The level of the Laguna project is to be set higher than the sea levels surrounding the project to ensure that the water in the Laguna is clean, aided by on-going water jets to maintain water circulation and clean water available to owners at all times.

Always at the forefront of such innovative projects, RE/MAX Malta has secured a number of stunning properties which are now listed exclusively with them. The list includes a choice of 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, and a truly spectacular two floor apartment. Each apartment has a spacious terrace set on the waters’ edge, with access to the Laguna water directly from bedrooms and living areas. For the majority of the apartments, this means direct access to their own private bathing platform.

Malta offers the tranquillity and luxury of such a place, yet the location of such a property is set on an island with a thriving economic state allowing two completely different lifestyle spectrums in one: relaxation and cosmopolitan.

Tipico’s Chief Operational Officer Ian McLoughlin is responsible for all the online gaming company’s Product, IT, Customer Operations, Casino, Business Analysis and Bookmaking departments. Here, he writes about the qualities he looks for in the employees that make up his teams.

I have deployed a very simple principle to leading the broad range of teams I lead: hire good people who are not only experts in their discipline, but who can also work together as a single senior management unit. That way I can maximise my contribution which is setting and executing ambitious, and at times highly complex, strategic goals for the company as a whole.

For a business of our size, this requires strong expertise married together with seamless cross-departmental collaboration. The trick to making this work is never compromising on attracting and hiring the very best talent. Getting that right allows me to concentrate on: (a) helping my diverse set of individual reports build trust and respect amongst each other

resulting in a strong, capable, cross-functional team; (b) ensuring that everyone understands their role and responsibility, and (c) removing barriers to enable the team to accomplish their tasks. As you can imagine, each department has its own challenges. Successful goal execution requires that I work closely with my senior team, whose members span across most departments, to ensure they work together to deliver great success. It’s a tremendously exhilarating position, given the incredible growth path we have set Tipico on and the complex and fast-moving dynamics of the gambling industry. We have a great strategy which has delivered stellar growth over the last five years; a growth which shows no sign of slowing. But, in order to realise that growth and ensure that we have the right plans for the constant challenge in the fast-moving environment of gambling, we need the best people.

In that regard we simply cannot make any compromises when we hire. We don’t just want the best

people, we need them! It isn’t just about attracting the right people though; that’s just the beginning of the process.

Everyone we hire has alternatives and it’s our job to make sure that we continue to invest heavily in them, challenge them and allow them every opportunity to be all they can be. That way they chose to stay with us. The result is a very committed, talented workforce who, together, constantly push the business forward. To conclude, I feel that working for Tipico is a multi-faceted positive experience. It’s Enabling, a place you can come and are positively encouraged to use your skills to get amazing things done. It’s Fast-moving and Exciting – we are a digital business, working in a fast changing environment. It’s Collaborative – the whole always being greater than the sum of the individual parts. And it’s also Friendly and Fun, whilst being highly professional.

tradition. The Maltese Islands are like nowhere else. Here you’ll find fossil-studded geo formations, prehistoric temples, intriguing diving opportunities, and a richly woven history of remarkable intensity.

Here’s a handy guide on what to look out for during your stay.

The Red tower, mellieha MALTAFort st Agatha has taken on its more common alias due to its brightly coloured walls. Built towards the middle of the 17th century, the bastioned watchtower formed the sixth addition to the Lascaris towers.

Holy week in Malta is specialForeigners visiting Malta for easter usually reach our shores on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday experiencing the tail end of Lent. Religious fervor and processions apart. Lent and Easter offer several interesting savory and sweet speciality dishes which one should try and taste during their visit.

The Lenten sweet kwareżimal – permitted as it contains no butter or eggs – is still on sale and definitely worth tasting. The name for this almond, citrus zest and spiced pastry comes from quaranta, Italian for 40, the number of fasting days. Of course the quality can seek out the better confectioners, ask a local. As far as savoury food goes street snacks like the qassata ta’ l–inċova , a spinach and anchovy pastry, and sfineġ tal–bakkaljaw,

salt cod fillets deep fried in a crispy, fluffy batter are commonly on sale. The qassata is sold from pastizzeriji whilst one of the band clubs in Rabat is especially sought out for the sfineġ. These tasty easter dishes can also be savoured at Gululu, the casual Maltese restaurant and ftajjarija – ftira is similar to Neapolitan pizza baked in a wood-burning oven, yet crunchier and with a hole in the middle - in spinola Bay, St Julian’s. On Thursday evening and Good Friday morning most families set out around Valletta or across a number of villages visiting the 'seven churches' where altars of repose are laid out with beautiful antique silver pieces and blankets of white flowers. All town and village squares buzz with activity and the reciting of prayers amidst the cries of street vendors selling Qagħaq ta’ l – Appostli, large bread

rings studded with almonds. The Good Friday processions are a spectacle few ever forget. up to 12 statues representing the passion of Jesus Christ are carried shoulder high around various towns and villages accompanied by numerous townsfolk dressed as Biblical characters in authentic attire; the Roman centurions dressed to kill are the most impressive, silver breast plates, leopard skins and all.

easter is a very special feast for allMaltese. It is the Catholic Church’s mostimportant feast and heralds in the warmweather and happier, carefree days. The pealing of bells on easter morning celebrates the resurrection of our Lord and the end of the long period of Lenten abstinence. Children rush out carrying their figolla – a biscuit and marzipan sweet, colourfully decorated with sugar icing and with a chocolate egg in the middle. Traditionally baked in the shape of a fish, rabbit or dove, the figolla probably comes from sicily where much of our sweet heritage originates. The figolli are blessed by the local parish priest as the men of the town or village run through the streets

carrying the statue of the risen Christ in the traditional Irxoxt, resurrection celebration. Certainly the most spectacular of these processions is held in the neighbouring cities of Bormla ( Cospicua) and Birgu (Vittoriosa) where the statue bearers run triumphantly and the statues are brought together high up on the hill of santa Margerita. The procession in Valletta, held in the evening, is also worth a visit.

Lamb remains traditional dish for the family lunch on easter sunday. An entire young lamb or the leg of a larger one are either roasted, ħaruf il–forn, or cooked as a frikassija. The roast is surrounded by potatoes, fresh garlic and flavoured with thyme, lemon juice and a dash of white wine, whilst for the frikassija the lamb is chopped into smaller pieces fried golden with onion, garlic and leeks, then dressed with egg, and lemon juice and braised slowly on a low flame. Fresh peas are added and a crusty loaf of Maltese bread is essential to mop up the delicious gravy, as are finger bowls and a pile of paper napkins. easter sunday lunch is a treat at Gululu.

62 HUMOUR

Maltese women are, well, unique. Growing up on this tiny rock in the middle of the Mediterranean, they have

developed and evolved in a way which has left many other species (particularly men) confused. And sometimes scared.

There are of course many, many different types of Maltese women. And it is impossible to list them all here; after all this isn't a long-haul flight. So instead we have come up with just five different types.

And here they are. Ladies and gents... we are proud to give you five types of Maltese woman:

1) The Tut lady

she rolls her eyes so much it is a wonder they haven't spun out of their sockets, her huffing is the stuff of legend and she could win an Olympic gold at tutting. Although due to her insistence that the world is conspiring against her, she knows for a fact that she would only be given a silver. Aged anywhere from early 20s to late 80s, she is extremely conservative, has a very low annoyance threshold and has no time for frivolity. Her favourite pastime is meeting up with other women in a shop and having a good tut. In her world 'Mickey Mouse' is an all-encompassing phrase for any cartoon and dusting is an activity that deserves respect.

The women of MaltaFollowing on from our examination of the male Maltes-er last month, this month we are going to

explore the females of our fair island.

Page 63: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

63HUMOUR

2) The Princess

Her earliest memories are skiing trips in the alps with Daddy, and she has got a degree in marketing. Although she will never use this. she is the type of woman who knows that she deserves the finer things in life. And she won't settle for anything else. she has only ever dated lawyers and business people. except once, when she went out with someone who worked in the civil service. But that was only for a bet. Loves avocado and can be found in coffee shops asking for Skinny spicy Chai Lattes after her morning jogs.

3) The twenty-something gonna-be

she will be famous one day. she will. Her parents told her that she was talented and she was a great tree in her year Four play at school so she knows it is her destiny to be on that Broadway stage. she is working in the family firm at the moment but it is only for a few more months. she is going to be a star. she is motivated, she wants it.

she will do literally anything to reach that goal. Well not literally. Within reason. I mean, she won't do anything that is too hard or demanding. And whatever she does she still needs to get her eight hours of sleep every night. And she is not going to waste money on courses and stuff to improve her technique. And of course she is not going to bother to go to auditions. But apart from that, anything.

4) Miss Independent

she is an independent woman. And can't stop telling you about it. she works hard and plays hard. And she does not need anyone to validate her. In fact she doesn't even have room in her life for anyone. especially now that she has got seven dogs. And she is doing ever so well at work. (Yet that b***h of a mother of hers has never once said 'well done'.) she has just moved into a gorgeous old house that she renovated all by herself and she has been thinking about inviting you over. But you both know that she won't. ever.

5) The Dominating one

Has never lost an argument in her life. And never will. Can answer every question put to her, or to anyone else in her vicinity because she knows and understands everything. she is not showing off. She just does. You see for her, the world is very simple, it is black and white, and she cannot understand why nobody else gets that.

she can spot weakness in an adversary a mile away and with a tounge that is sharper than a razor blade, can destroy them in seconds. she has been married for years and constantly complains that her partner never speaks. Her partner meanwhile has given up trying.

If you should encounter these or any other type of Maltese female, observe from a great distance and only approach with great care. Your life may change in a way you never thought possible.

The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, is being held in aid of research in brain disorders through the university of Malta’s Research Trust, RIDT.

undoubtedly, The Four seasons is Antonio Vivaldi’s most popular work. Consisting of four violin concertos, each gives a musical expression to a season of the year. unusually for the time, Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying poems (possibly written by Vivaldi himself) that elucidated what it was about those seasons that his music was intended to evoke.

A 14-piece string ensemble made up of top musicians residing in Malta will

support Carmine Lauri with Michael Laus at the helm from the harpsichord.

The Four seasons will be the peak of the brain awareness and fund raising campaign which is being coordinated by RIDT in collaboration with the Malta Neuroscience Network, the Malta Chamber of scientists, the Richmond Foundation and Malta Café scientifique. Għajn Tuffieħa beach at sunset

Page 67: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

While the sun drags the sky sizzling into the sea on this side of the world, Melanie Vella scouts out the top spots to capture the

most mesmerising sights.

PICTURE PERFECT

As the Sun Sets

Like trying to relate a dream, retelling a beautiful sunset can be a tricky affair. Capturing the depth of colour, the grandeur of the natural

surroundings and the elements that cap the perfect end to another day lived on this little island in the Mediterranean is ineffable. Such beauty is ultimately subjective to begin with. Once you start adventuring around the Maltese Islands you will make up your own list of unforgettable sunset spots. Here are the ones that made it to our final list.

Riviera Bay or Għajn Tuffieħa, MĠarr

You may be tempted to walk down the steep stairway to hit the golden sandy beach. However the perfect perch to watch the sun set over the water is from above the grassy clay hills in the middle of the horse shoe shaped bay.

The table-top hill to one side and the Għajn Tuffieħa Tower perched on the cliffs to the right are idyllic accessories for this serene escape.

Riviera beach is one of the three sandy beaches found near each other in the north of Malta. Bring a blanket and sit on the hilltop, while the orange glow slowly fades into darkness as the rolling blue waves crash onto the sand.

Senglea Harbour (L-Isla)

The senglea Harbour draws you back in time to a quieter, slower pace. The seafront has recently been renovated and fuses the quaint charm of Maltese livelihood with luxurious super yachts and cruise liners lining the shores of the Harbour. Walk round the waterfront bend until you reach the local eatery by the sea. You can sit outside by the sea, with a steaming

glass of tea and soak in the view of the Grand Harbour, Valletta and Birgu. Watch as the sun plays hide and seek behind the craggy Maltese skyline.

St Mary’s Tower, Comino

step back in history and take a stroll to st Mary’s Tower (It-Torri Ta’ santa Maria) on the small island of Comino. The tower was built in 1618 and offers a 360 view of Malta and Gozo. sit on the tower’s thick stone walls, and stare as the sun sinks behind the silhouette of church steeples and Gozo’s hilly skyline. Located in the southern coast of the tiny third island, this tower is one of a chain of defensive towers built by the Knights of Malta at vantage points along the coastline of the Maltese Islands. From the bow of a sailing boat

For an unforgettable memory, charter a sailing yacht and see the breathtaking cosmos display from the bow of a sailing boat. experience the thrill of a day sailing around Gozo and aim to reach the tip of the island by sundown. sail into the sunset with the view of Gozo’s Azure Window, Dwejra, in the distance on one side and the seamless horizon on the other.

Mdina Bastions

Malta’s old capital city with its winding, mosaic streets, artistic heritage and stone carved architecture is a beautiful runway to the thick stone bastions at the edge of the elevated city. Walk through the ‘silent City’ to the viewpoint, where you can look out over panoramic views. Admire the dotted green fields, and landmarks, like the Mosta Dome as the sun slips behind the sea. If you are looking for a cosy bite to eat to accompany the breathtaking views, wander into one of the nearby tea shops.

ICe is a showcase for the gaming industry, exhibiting all aspects of the industry both online and land based. It is, without a doubt, the most influential gaming exhibition in the world, and if you exhibit at only one show per year,

make sure it is ICe.

Since 2012, the floor space taken up by the exhibition has increased by over 15,000 SQM, to an astonishing 39,000 SQM in 2016. The international attendance of exhibitors was led by Malta, with 34 exhibitors from the island setting up shop on the floor and wowing delegates, attendees and fellow exhibitors alike.

The stands and the antics and advertising shows of the exhibitors are, of course, highly entertaining and informative, but this is by no means the only aspect of ICe. each year, not only does the show increase in size, but so does its educational and information aspects. In 2016, the variety of conferences, seminars and briefings accounted for 70 hours of learning opportunities.

The topics covered ranged from training to industry professionals on multiple levels, to update briefs on immediately relevant topics to the industry such as the ‘World Regulatory Briefing’.

But ICe is not all work – there is plenty of time set aside for networking events in the evenings, and a chance to enjoy everything London has to offer. There is of course the Fire

& Ice events, as well as several other evening events hosted by exhibitors.

In order to navigate your way around the Technopolis and make the best of your visit to ICe, there is the mobile app, the floor map available online and sometimes, just follow your ears – or the fantastically dressed promotional staff.ICe 2016 featured 529 exhibitors, from 62 countries – of which 119 were first timers.

We are already looking forward to ICe 2017, and hope to see you there!

The much sought after farmhouseWordS byRichard Wolf

Page 71: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

71RURAL

Before the building craze, which continues unabated, took over these islands, the razzett, or farmhouse, was one of rural

Malta’s most imposing landmarks, dominating terraced fields and stretches of farmland. The very simplicity of these vernacular structures is attractive and totally in-keeping with the landscape. The rough texture of the heavily weathered stonework blends so well with its surroundings. This certainly cannot be said of most of the modern buildings, many of which stick out like sore thumbs. The farmhouses are indeed 'architecture without architects.'

The roof of the razzett is flat and like some other features, probably an Islamic legacy. It has always been used by housewives for hanging the day’s washing. They form a typical country scene with melons and pumpkins arranged on the edges of rooftops to ripen in the sun; figs are

left in containers to desiccate and be eaten when the fresh ones are out of season; onions pickled in vinegar have a place there as well. Nowadays you can purchase dried tomatoes in a jar or by weight but this was not always so. Farmers learnt to preserve tomatoes by salting them and leaving them to dry in the sun to be eaten all the year round or turned into tomato paste.

Gbejniet, the small round cheeses made from sheep’s or goat’s milk, are dried on the roof in the purposely-built cheese room, away from greedy animals.

The roof has another important use. It serves as a catchment area for precious rainwater. This is led into earthware pipes into the water cistern dug out into the rock floor below the courtyard. In fact, the Knights of Malta had stipulated that every abode should have a well. This was particularly useful in the absence of a piped water supply.

the rough texture of the heavily weathered stonework blends so well with its surroundings

Page 72: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

Farmhouses are simple, functional and unsophisticated. The earlier ones are devoid of ornamentation except, in some cases, for a few carvings, mostly in the central courtyard around which the farmhouse was built.

The typical farmhouse is a two-storyed building. The residential area or għorfa generally occupies the first floor and is reached by a very basic outdoor staircase that ascends from the courtyard. In the larger farmhouses the rooms communicate with one another by means of a verandah or loġġia with large, arched openings. On the ground floor are the storage room, animal pens and stables. The life story of a farmer’s family

generally goes on in the rooms of the first floor. Sometimes there is just one room but often two or three or more. When farmers were very poor these used to be furnished with bare basics. Now they are more comfortably equipped. It is in these rooms where the weary farmer and his wife take refuge from the harsh sun and the hard work in the fields. Everything from birth until death happens here.

Most farmhouses have arched doorways wide enough to admit a cart drawn by a donkey or mule. You will often see a cart leaning against a wall or a cartwheel hanging in the courtyard or outside by way of decoration.

some farmhouses have a sculpted sundial on the exterior wall. There is often a shrine with a stone statue on the front or a corner of a farmhouse. Others have an attractive stone balcony with beautifully embellished façades, mouldings and delicately-sculpted motifs. Look out for moon crescents, six-petalled flowers, stars and rosettes as well as the eight-pointed Maltese cross. some have balustrades, others the coat-of-arms of a Grand Master or a past feudal landlord; or maybe a tablet carved with the foundation date of the farmstead on the doorway.

Open balconies are scattered all over Malta and Gozo but historians claim that

72 RURAL

Page 73: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

the greatest concentration of them is in Gharb, Gozo. One has to take off one’s hat to the aesthetic sense and the high standards of craftsmanship by our local carvers and masons. A short article such as this cannot do them justice.

For many years now those farmhouses which have not crumbled, been abandoned or been replaced by modern buildings have been put on the property market. At first they were mostly bought by foreigners who had chosen

to retire on these islands because of advantageous tax benefits. However, soon, the locals too started finding them attractive and ‘converting’ them as second homes.

One of the most famous personalities who lived in a converted farmhouse in Gozo was Nicholas Monsarrat of The Cruel sea fame, who lived with his wife Ann in san Lawrenz. His experience of living in Gozo was translated into another best selling novel: The Kappillan of Malta (1973).

74 HISTORY

White lies withinMysterious stone slabs, wall carvings and spirally mesmerising chambers… Veronica Stivala takes a closer look at Tarxien Temples and the neighbouring Hypogeum

Page 75: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

75HISTORY

Page 76: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

The Hypogeum is an underground structure that dates back to 3300-3000 BC. That makes it older than one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world: stonehenge, which archeologists believe to have been

constructed from 3000 to 2000 BC.

I recently re-visited the Hypogeum of Hal-Saflieni, commonly referred to as simply the Hypogeum, after many many years, and was struck by the aura of this place and the majesty that it brings with it. The visit starts with a clear exhibition-style section, where visitors can learn more about the Hypogeum and its discovery and history. Next, a guide takes visitors down along the interconnecting rock-cut chambers set on three distinct levels. The earliest remains of this site date back to c. 4000 BC and it is truly inspiring to walk through these rooms that date back some 6000 years. A highlight for me was the third and final chamber, popularly known as the ‘Holy of Holies’, the surrounding embryonic chambers, which are beautifully lit, create an atmosphere that is at once spiritual, eerie and mesmerising.

The Hypogeum is just one of several prehistoric Megalithic Temples that can be found around Malta. While this famous subterranean structure is older than stonehenge, it is interestingly not the oldest in Malta and falls into the second of three phases in the history of Malta’s three main phases in

the Temple Period (4100 – c. 2500 BC). The Hypogeum is thus beaten by the temples built during what is referred to as the Ġgantija phase (3600 – 3200 BC) and from which the temples take their name. These temples are one of the most important archeological sites in Malta, and deserve an article dedicated to them alone, so, for the sake of being concise, this article focuses solely on the temples found in Malta.

The third and most recent phase is the Tarxien phase during which the Tarxien Temples were built between 3600 and 2500 BC. What makes these temples particularly interesting is the mystery that enshrouds them. They are essentially a complex of four megalithic structures which are connected by a square court and were built by the mysterious creed known as the ‘Temple Builders’.

A question that quickly comes to mind when we look at these temples is definitely, how were they built? Just looking at the enormous size of the stones reveals that it must have been an incredibly arduous task to build imposing the temples. We have one of Malta’s foremost archeologists – sir Themistocles Zammit – to thank, who excavated many sites and helped decipher some of these mysteries. His theories included a means of quarrying the stone, transporting the gigantic slabs on cylindrical pillars and then putting them in place by means of a complex system that involved many men holding them upright.

76 HISTORY

Page 77: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

These temples played an incredibly important part in the solidification of Malta's history as they confirmed the existence of a thriving ancient culture on the island.

Another question that has to be addressed is why were these temples built? In an analysis of Malta’s temples, historian Joseph Abela comments how we must let the stones speak to find this answer:

“The stones, in the shape of altars, side-altars, containers to retain the sacrificial blood flowing from the altars, tethering places for sacrificial animals and such evidence give further proof that it was primitive man’s desire to placate the Deity or the Deities to whom he offered sacrificies that compelled him to build these temples. They were meant for sacrificial killings and sacrifices to the gods and goddesses.”

Further testament to this has been the discovery of a flint blade, a long bone spatula, animal bones and seashells within the carved altar. The fine workmanship and decorative carvings are surely one of the top attractions at the temples. These include domestic animals carved in relief and intricate spiral designs. Visitors will notice the most common design in Megalithic art in Malta: the spiral. This is believed to have represented eternity and can be seen in many of the temples dotted around the island.

A word of advice, while it is fascinating to merely stand in the powerful presence of the towering megaliths and to

admire their architecture, there is so much more than meets the eye and, to understand the workings behind the temples it would be a good idea to opt for a guided tour. All visits to the Hypogeum are accompanied by a guide but because the place is small and the number of visitors limited to protect the place, viewing opportunities quickly fill up and it is advisable to book your visit well in advance.

Current Works:

Tarxien Temples recently underwent works which included studies, the installation of a visitor walkway, the installation of a protective shelter and the refurbishment of the small visitor centre. A mobile app, Tarxien Temples, has also been launched. The free version of this app provides an audio tour as well as additional information about the site. 77HISTORY

Page 78: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

In 18th century Malta marriages were very often arranged. Parents searched for a suitable partner for their children, ideally within the same village. sometimes a matchmaker’s services were used and it was not unusual

for the matchmaker to be paid in kind. Payment in olives was popular since they then grew plentifully on these islands.

Broken promises or misdemeanours before or after marriage were often taken to the Inquisitor a sort of solomon. some of the misdemeanours seem almost ludicrous today. In 1792 for example, one husband was reported to the Inquisitor for throwing some holy pictures on the floor.

It was dangerous to be frivolous in love in those days, except if you were a knight and a member of the Order of St John, in which case you got away scot free – leaving a trail of broken hearts and possibly illegitimate children in your wake.

In 1563 the Council of Trent made it compulsory for parish priests to record marriages and baptisms. However, such

records had already been kept by meticulous men of the church in such places as Naxxar, Birkirkara, Gudja and other villages. some registers were lost not through carelessness but in times of war. Registers were also burnt down to control rampant disease such as plague. According to Frans Ciappara in his study Marriage in Malta in the late eighteenth Century, some parish priests were far-sighted enough to recopy registers before they became completely illegible with time.

All sorts of liaisons were created. Maltese corsairs who were taken as slaves sometimes gave up their Catholic faith to take a Muslim wife. These men in Tunis or Tripoli, Constantinople or Constantine often did this as ‘a means to be put in full liberty and thus to have a better chance to escape.’ Indeed, some did manage to escape. They returned to Malta to their first wife to find that she, too, had entered into another liaison anyway.

Maltese men abroad tended to prefer to marry a Maltese woman. These men had left Malta to become sailors on the Order’s galleys. There were those who had gone abroad in the

service of some knight. Others worked in the Order’s bakeries in sicily. Marriage was taken seriously and these men applied to the Bishop for a marriage licence.

Malta has always been a port of call and attracted foreigners who often took Maltese brides. suitors came from all over Europe. They had to present their birth certificate and evidence from their bishop that they were unmarried. But in spite of precautions bigamy was common and both church authorities and Maltese girls were sometimes hoodwinked.

Often those who had daughters of a marriageable age put pots of basil in their window, or on balconies or ledges built for that purpose. Each pot indicated a marriageable daughter. Young men thus knew where to loiter with intent and could make up their minds whether they considered the girl worth pursuing.

The dowry has always been an important element which the girl brought to the marriage. Men usually inherited it along with the girl’s extensive family. This dowry varied. There were blankets

and skirts, bedspreads and blouses, towels and tablecloths. The men brought sashes, silver buttons and silk buckles. sometimes it could have been just a few chairs or even a few framed holy pictures. If it was a field or property a legal deed was drawn up. But ‘when both were poor they thought it argued ill of hasty love to make them poorer still,’ and they did not get married.

As everywhere else a father’s fortune always helps to marry off even the most undesirable daughter. On the wholemoney still tends to marry money, and privilege, privilege.Youngsters meet in discos, at the workplace, at parties, university, the beach or homes of friends. But also on the social media, not forgetting the internet.

The average Maltese man is very Mediterranean and still expects to rule the roost although the bit about women obeying has been removed from the marriage vows.Who is marrying whom is discussed on beaches and in boudoirs relentlessly, and weddings always create a ripple of anticipation in Malta’s social whirl.

Page 80: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

A wedding is an occasion to display family heirlooms where these exist and to fulfil social obligations; an occasion for kith and kin to meet in a Malta where life is becoming increasingly busy. All members of families expect to be invited and the network of ties is evident to those who know the families. The curious and the envious, the great and the good, the growling, scowling and frowning, and a politician or two are there. everyone gives their best performance.

Weddings are held in the morning or evening; in private chapels or in cathedrals. Florists are booked well ahead and the bride walks up the aisle on a red carpet with flowers and bows on either side. she might roll up to church in a silver Rolls Royce. These are star-spangled celebrations when men display their women, and women their fineries. Hats and accessories are often bought in Rome, London or nearby Catania. They may also be hired for the occasion. shoes match bag while jewellery matches eyeshadow. Well, sometimes. The bride’s veil may be a family heirloom made of some rare lace. The dress in often made to measure. There are flounces or frills or pearls and sometimes all three. But in certain circles there is elegance and good taste. Let us not forget the bridesmaids, page boys and the colour scheme chosen by the bride.

Weddings are extensively reported in one of the weddings magazines which are successful and popular. They are dreams which are out of proportion to reality. For some girls it is an occasion to feel ‘like a princess’ and the one day in their life when they are the centre of attention.

On such occasions sopranos, tenors and choirs are hired to sing hymns and one of the Ave Marias. They sing with full chested crescendos and much emotion. There are tears of joy and tears of nostalgia and hankies – or more likely tissues – are ubiquitous. There are witnesses and short panegyrics about love and happiness.

Food and drink are very generously provided for guests. There may be a trio or a band and perhaps a singer to provide entertainment. A photographer and videographer are working hard and later provide the couple with a souvenir album and a video reminding them of this happy day.

Weddings in Malta are big business and an expensive affair. It is money well spent when there is a happy ending and the marriage does not finish up in the divorce courts.

Greg and I had been engaged for two years before deciding to set a date, and we were immediately hit with the dilemma of where to host our wedding and who to invite. I come from a very large family,

and it was apparent that we wouldn’t be able to afford the wedding we wanted in the UK without major sacrifices. We both love travelling, so getting married abroad seemed the obvious solution. Malta appealed due to it being easy to get to for all of our guests across the uK, the hot climate, and the fact that the wedding would be in english.

Sarah Young and her team made the process of planning a wedding in a different country completely stress-free and enjoyable – people were commenting on how calm we were! We decided to hold our wedding in a beautiful garden villa on the Island, and were completely blown away when we saw it. The set up was fantastic, and went beyond our expectations. everything was perfect. everybody had an amazing time, with many commenting that it was the best wedding they had ever attended; a testament to sarah and Victoria for making the day run so smoothly. We are planning to return to Malta for our anniversary in August, we have fallen in love with the island.

EVENTS & NEWS about malta's national airline

86 AIR MALTA NEWS

This March, one of the oldest and most active student organisations in Malta will be taking on its greatest challenge yet – The

Malta Medical students’ Association will be playing host to the International Federation of Medical students’ Associations. To bring together over 1,100 representatives of a Federation which represents over 1.2 million medical students from 100 countries all over the globe is herculean task for such a tiny organisation.

Yet it is a task borne with enthusiasm, energy and great optimism. These were the same qualities that, a year ago characterised its 16 representatives that travelled to Antalya, Turkey, to bid for this prestigious honour in a similar gathering across the Mediterranean. Facing stiff competition from Montenegro, our tiny island nevertheless won the hearts of the Federation. After months of hard work, brutal challenges and stormy periods,

the Organising Committee appointed by the MMSA is finally seeing its labours come to fruition.

From the 2nd of March till the 8th of March these young students and doctors will meet up to discuss international health policy, adopt personal and collegiate resolutions, obtain and deliver vital skills training and elect representatives to speak with one united global voice at international bodies such as the united Nations and the World Health Organisations. Uniquely, this year the central theme will deal with the sustainable Development Goals adopted at the close of 2015.

sustainability is the key by word that describes all the efforts and intentions behind the organising of this event. With huge budgets, inflated costs, and burgeoning opportunities for waste generation, ensuring a healthy approach to the delivery of this event

MALTA –THE HOTSPOT FOR SUSTAINABLE CHANGE FOR OVER 1,000 PEOPLE THIS MARCH

Page 87: Il-Bizzilla March 2016 - Issue 39

has been of paramount importance to the organising committee. By means of shrewd management and sound advice, a conference has been designed which protects the interests of the environment whilst still optimising work efficiency and production.

Through the interventions of various international dignitaries and global experts, it is hoped that a new form of grass root change is adopted at this conference, one which will inspire the delegates in attendance to go back to their nations with a new approach to issues of daily living. In this manner, young students and doctors in the field of health-care may rediscover new ways of tackling daunting challenges such as lack of access to essential medicine, inexorable climate change, spreading pandemics and human apathy.

It is fitting that Malta will be the centre for this potential rediscovery. As an island nation, it has through its tumultuous history always sought to redefine and rediscover itself, adapt to changing circumstances and surf the tides of change whilst remaining self-sufficient and relevant in the modern world. None have displayed this better than our honoured partner Air Malta, which has itself found itself anew for the sake of sustainable change.

Our work is done – All that is left is for the spark to catch fire. Are you ready to carry the embers? Will you change the world?

A crew led by the 2015 winner of the BAFTA award for factual cinematography has spent months filming the marine

life around the Maltese archipelago’s tiniest and most remote islet – Filfa. The resulting underwater documentary financed by the Malta Airport Foundation will immerse viewers in the mysterious and treacherous underwater world surrounding the protected island, which is usually off-limits to all visitors.

“Filfla has been one of the most difficult places to film. The currents are dangerous and unforgiving, which resulted in many dives being carried out just to familiarise ourselves with the place,” said Pedja, the director.

The joint venture by the Malta Airport Foundation and The Panacea Project is the latest instalment in a series of underwater documentaries about the local sea habitat, aimed at educating people and garnering support for conservation efforts. Each year over 60,000 scuba divers are drawn towards Malta’s beautiful and fragile underwater environment, making the protection and preservation of this environment crucial for our collective heritage and our tourism product.

The full 20-minute documentary is expected to be released in mid-2016. until then you can get a taste of Filfa’s stunning marine environment by watching the trailer on Malta International Airport’s YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/MaltAirport.

IVAN SCICLUNA EXECUTIVE MEETINGS, INCENTIVES, CONFERENCING AND EXHIBITIONS

il-bizzilla talks to

How long have you been working with Air Malta?

I joined Air Malta back in 1979 as a trainee clerk and have always been in the sales team both in Malta and overseas. This year I’ll 'celebrate' my 37th with the National Airline.

What three words describe your job best?

exciting, innovative and demanding.

What is the biggest challenge when working with Air Malta?

unlike the leisure side of the business where a tour operator keeps selling Air Malta all year round, sourcing for MICe clients is a 24x7 job.

Do you have any hobbies?

For a number of years I have been writing screenplays for feature-length

movies in english. unfortunately, I have not yet been discovered by Hollywood but, I have had one script ‘optioned’ and performed extremely well in a couple of international script-writing contests.

Which is your favourite destination and why?

scotland. Apart from the fact that I have family living there, I have visited ‘bonnie Caledonia’ dozens of times. Rich in history, fantastic people and incredible nature (particularly up in the Highlands) makes scotland my home away from home.

What are your favourite spots or tips for anyone visiting Malta?

I grew up in Rabat and the surrounds were my childhood playground. The areas around Rabat, including Mdina, Mtarfa and Buskett Gardens are a must. The hospitality of the people is honest and spontaneous, and local food somehow tastes even better in 'our' area.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTIONAlcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are

legally empowered to refuse serving any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and to anyone

under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s

own drinks so that the passenger would not become a nuisance to the other passengers and

crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit embarkation

or the carriage of drunken passengers. But once you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight

Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed,

the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event

that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic

beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.
