reached!!! still rings our ears calling us to bind ourselves in a tireless effort to build a brighter India, a greater India , of count less tomorrows. 150 years past the birth of this great soul, present India faces new challenges, the enemies are within – the corruption, nepotism, dishonesty. Can we hope for the rebirth of such an indomitable, inspirational soul to set ourselves free again from the clutches of such evil spirits?

One more week left, the midtowners onto Bangkok are upbeat with all the preparations. Chairman Sundar and Co-chairman are ready with their last minute tips and advise. I am sure we are going to have a great time together. But before that

stwe have one more meeting on May 1 - Rotary Midtown Shramajeevi Award.

“In a day when you don't come across any problems, - you can be sure you are travelling in a wrong path”- Swami Vivekananda.

Wedding Anniversary

Dear friends,Last 2 weeks I missed the action in midtown. I

was away visiting Murdeshwar, Kollur, Shringeri and Horanadu in two instalments. While I was away editor elect Rtn. Srinivas did an excellent job of taking care of the bulletin. Thanks Seenanna

During the weekend Mysore witnessed a great th

event – as part of 150 birthday celebrations of Swami Vive kananda- a four day convention “ Bharatiya Adyatmika Sammilana” was held under

the auspices of R a m a k r i s h n a Ashrama, Mysore. Being an alumnus of Sri Ramakrishna V i d y a s h a l a I m a n a g e d s o m e t i m e t o attend the event for few hours on Sunday. More than 50 monks from southern India deliberated for 4

days on the subject of Hinduism and relevance of Swami Vivekananda in the present context. Swami Vivekananda's visit to Mysore more than 120 yrs ago was remembered. A few memorials were inaugurated on this occasion including Niranjan Mutt, where Swamiji stayed while he was in Mysore. Swami Vivekananda is remembered today with great affection , gratitude and devotion as the beacon light of India's spiritual renaissance. His wake up call 'Arise! Awake! Stop not till the goal is

Our beloved MLA Sri S A Ramadass dedicated the fully furbished ventilator facilitated Ambulance donated by Rotary Mysore Midtown under Matching Grant to SGDM Trust, Chamundi Vanam, Mysore.

As Rtn Narendra Babu made it a point to call Midtowners for this occasion, the response was very positive as sizable numbers

stgathered on Saturday 21 at Chamundi Vanam early at 9.30 AM. The MLA kept up his appointment and was present at 10 AM as scheduled. After seeking blessings from Goddess Chamundeshwari in the premises and welcomed by Rtn Narendra Babu who is one of the trustees, the MLA inspected the Ambulance and appreciated the gesture. Quickly posing for a group photo, the MLA left for a busy day ahead.

Ambulance itself is 'ICU on wheels”. It is one of the most sophisticated in the city with modern ventilator, monitor and defibrillator equipment all fixed and ready for use. The main purpose of the ambulance is to transfer critically ill patients from one ICU to another ICU with all the life supports so that no casualty occurs during the transit. Presently such transfer will cost a huge amount and Narendra Babu of the SGDM trust hopes to provide the same service at less than half the cost. This will definitely a boon for the poor patients who are critically ill and will need transfers from one hospital to another for better treatment. Providing a trained paramedic person to accompany the patient is an added advantage.

Midtowners celebrated the occasion with a sumptuous breakfast at GTR courtesy Babanna. Thank you Babu for a wonderful program and we wish you and your trust all the very best in your endeavor. May God give you more strength to serve the needy.

AMBULANCE DEDICATED TO SOCIETY

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty. He asks one of his new students to stand and..... Prof: So you believe in God?Student : Absolutely, sir.Prof: Is God good?Student : Sure.Prof : Is God all-powerful?Student: Yes..Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm?(Student is silent.) Prof:You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?Student:Yes.Prof:Is Satan good?Student: No.Prof:Where does Satan come fromStudent:From....God...Prof:That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?Student:Yes.Prof:Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything. Correct?Student:Yes.Prof:So who created evil?(Student does not answer.)Prof:Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?Student:Yes, sir.Prof:So, who created them?(Student has no answer.)Prof:Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?Student:No, sir.Prof:Tell us if you have ever heard your God?Student:No, sir.Prof:Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?Student:No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.Prof:Yet you still believe in Him?Student:Yes.Prof:According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?Student:Nothing. I only have my faith.Prof:Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.Student:Professor, is there such a thing as heat?Prof:Yes.Student: And is there such a thing as cold?Prof:Yes.Student:No sir. There isn't.(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat..But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it . (There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theater.)Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?Prof : Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?Student :You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light.....But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? Inreality, darkness isn't. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?

Rotary Midtown

Shrama Jeevi Award

Date: 1-05-2012 at 6.30pm

Venue : RCL Hall, JLB Road

Ri Convention Promises Inspiring Speakers At A Great Value

Rotary's 103rd convention in Bangkok, Thailand, 6-9

May, will offer attendees an unforgettable experience in the

Land of a Thousand Smiles. Bangkok is a city filled with exotic

temples, unique museums, and ancient attractions. The RI

Convention also promises great speakers, including two

individuals who have spent their lives promoting economic

and community development, one of Rotary's areas of focus. Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus will be a

keynote speaker Monday, 7 May. Yunus is the founder of

Grameen Bank, which provides small loans to entrepreneurs,

particularly women, in impoverished communities. Also speaking on 7 May will be Hugh Evans, cofounder

and CEO of the Global Poverty Project, an organization

dedicated to motivating people to take action to end extreme

poverty. The Global Poverty Project recently added polio

eradication to its list of campaigns. Star Alliance member airlines are offering travel

discounts to Bangkok for Rotarians. Save up to 20 percent on

most published .Microfinance pioneer : Muhammad Yunus was an

economics professor at the University of Chittagong in

Bangladesh when he began transforming lives through

microcredit. What began as personal microloans to poor

women in nearby villages grew into Grameen Bank, which

today has more than 2,500 branches throughout the country.

Since 1983, the bank has helped launch or expand the

businesses of more than 8.34 million borrowers – 97 percent

of them women. What makes Grameen Bank even more impressive is its

nearly 97 percent repayment rate – a recovery rate higher

than any other banking system. Grameen social business

models can be found in 58 countries, including Canada,

France, Norway, the Netherlands, and the United States. In October 2006, Yunus and Grameen Bank were

awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to foster

economic and social development from the bottom up. Yunus

chairs the Yunus Centre, which was formed to help

disseminate information and promote the Grameen model. Ending poverty, hunger, and polio : Hugh Evans began

his humanitarian work at age 14, traveling to the Philippines

from his home in Australia as an ambassador for World Vision.

He founded the Australia-based Oaktree Foundation, a youth-

run aid organization that aims to end global poverty, and in

2004 was named Young Australian of the Year. The Global Poverty Project formally launched in 2008.

Using a combination of advocacy campaigns and education,

the organization seeks to motivate the public to halve poverty

and hunger by 2015, a target of the UN Millennium

Development Goals. Recently, the Global Poverty Project has set its sights on

another goal of particular importance to Rotarians: ending

polio. The organization is conducting an online petition drive to

encourage world leaders to fully fund polio eradication, and

held an End of Polio Concert on 28 October in Perth, Australia

Prof:So what is the point you are making, young man?Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawedProf: Flawed? Can you explain how?Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought.. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?Prof:If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir? (The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class is in uproar.)Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain? (The class breaks out into laughter.)Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the establ ished rules of empir ical , stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir? (The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)Prof:I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.Student: That is it sir... The link between man & god is FAITH . That is all that keeps things moving & alive.
