Pastor’s Letter for the March 2018 Newsletter “I will tell of your name to my brothers, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.”-Psalm 22:22 One of the great blessings that Pastor Sally and I experience during the season of Lent is having the opportunity to worship more with you, our brothers and sisters in Christ. As a part of this worshipping community each time we gather in Christ’s name is like a family gathering only with Christ at the very center of it as he distributes to us his means of grace and as we respond in praise and thanksgiving. Faithful worship of God is at the center of all of our lives, we were each made in the image of God and he has called us to constantly find renewal through our praise of Him. What’s more, our worship unites us not only with each other but with all the faithful saints of old and with Christians around the world. During Lent we explore the depths of God’s love for His people as we move relentlessly towards Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Our worship together humbles us but also empowers us, as we humbly admit our own sinfulness so are we reminded of His great cure for it, his sacrificial death on the cross. As we witness the turmoil in our world; the random shootings, the various threats to world peace, the turmoil in our contentious political lives, the devastation caused by addictions, we need to remember that is Christ our Lord who gives us true peace, who gives us direction and guidance, who sets us apart that we might live as light unto others, spreading the hope of the Gospel in a dying world. To Him is due honor and praise, to Him do we gather as his priestly people to uplift the world in prayer, support one another in worship and fellowship, to be nourished by the sacrament. Come and worship, worship God who has given His all for us, saints of his adoption.

SPECIAL APPEAL FOR MARCH: Scholarship Fund This month’s special appeal assists our high school

graduates in paying for their higher education. Attending an institution of higher education is an expensive undertaking

and any assistance in this regard helps to alleviate the burden of this financial undertaking. Those who apply for the

funds must have achieved a good level of academic achievement during their high school careers and are

expected to have contributed to the good of society. Thus, student candidates are interviewed by the Scholarship

Committee, their goals are discussed with them, and their financial needs and grades assessed. The principal of the

fund is not touched but rather interest is used, so donations to the fund help to ensure that the fund stays solvent in light of inflation and grows as college costs also increase. Use

the envelope that comes in the mail with your other envelopes or a green envelope from the pew.

Thank You to the congregation for your generous

support of the College Care packages, the Souper Bowl of Caring and the Mystery Dinner. Through these service projects we have worked together to reach out to 8 of our college students, and we have raised over $1000.00 for hungry people split between, Harvest of Hope, LWR, and Meals from the Heartland.

Women of the Word will be meeting on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:45 pm. We are continuing our Bible Study "Giving God Your All." Deb Abreght will lead our study "Do You Trust Me? and Nadine Worley will provide refreshments. We invite all ladies to join us for our study and fellowship.

THANK YOU

Dear Saint Paul Lutheran Church, At Keystone Christian Academy, 2017 has been marked by God’s faithfulness and His lessons of trusting His timing to provide for our external and internal needs. We continue to learn that His heart is giving. Thank you for reflecting His heart and investing in the lives of our students, and being a part of His process. Your dollars are transforming destinies! From all of us at KCA we want nothing more than an abundance of blessing to flow over you and your family in this new year! Christine Johnson, Director of Advancement, Keystone Christian Academy

Dear Friends, we recently received your gift of $94.00 to Lutheran World Relief. With your support, LWR is able to work inside Syria, helping repair and renovate bakeries in two areas of the Aleppo district. Those bakeries will go on to provide affordable, daily bread to more than 80,000 people. On behalf of LWR, our partners and those we serve, please accept my thanks for your generous support and partnership. May God bless you! Warm Regards, Daniel V. Speckhard, President and CEO, Lutheran World Relief

I want to thank you for all the prayers, get well cards and meals during my recuperation. It was a journey I don’t want to do ever again. All was greatly appreciated. In Christian Love, Mary Keller

It is with a grateful heart that we say thank you for the care and concern expressed to us following the death of our son, brother, and uncle, Michael A. Zerby of Mechanicsburg in early January. Pastor Paul and Pastor Sally, thank you for the continued prayers for Michael, visits, calls, the opportunity to receive Holy Communion, and attendance at the funeral. It was truly a gift you so willingly gave; thank you. To the members of the Social Ministry Committee, thank you so much for delicious dinner. We appreciated it more than you'll ever know! To all the friends who called, sent cards, attended the viewing, and said prayers during this difficult time, we are so grateful! It is comforting to be members of such a caring and supportive congregation. Your kindness allowed the love of our Heavenly Father to shine through your actions. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Bill and Nancy Zerby and Cindy and Jamie Renehan

them and knot some knots! Thanks to all who donate material and time for this important work. The three-layer quilts are donated to Lutheran

World Relief and the two-layer quilts are donated locally

THANK YOU – Cont.

Dear Friends at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thank you for your generous gift of quilts and kits for LWR’s distribution overseas. These gifts of your hearts and hands are beautiful expressions of God’s grace and love to people all around the world. Because of your support, LWR is able to share the tangible love of Christ with thousands of people through your quilts and kits. Your quilts and kits provide important necessities to our neighbors around the world, and serve as reminders that they are not alone or forgotten. On behalf of our neighbors in villages, schools, hospitals and refugee camps around the world, I extend deepest thanks for your contributions, and pray God’s richest blessings on your life and work! In Christ, Melanie W. Gibbons Quilt & Kit Ministry Manager

Thank you very much to everyone that had a part in my college care package. Even though I am living at home while attending college, I appreciate the snacks and goodies to take with me for between classes. I am thankful that you remembered me while "away" at school. Evan Huber

The Case for Christ-special Sunday school offering for Lent. Join Pastor Paul as he leads a dynamic Bible Study accompanied by DVD on how unbelieving investigative reporter Lee Strobel came to believe in the saving work of Christ. Based on the recent film “The Case for Christ,” this Bible Study will inspire and confirm your faith in our Savior in very compelling ways. It will be held in Room 1 in the Sunday School wing February 11-March 25. Four Sessions will be from the movie and an additional two will reinforce this with other very helpful material and DVD.

LCMC From the December LCMC Newsletter The Board of Trustees is excited to announce that we have a Coordinator for Pastoral Ministry! Pastor Perry Fruhling has accepted the position and begins January 15, 2018. Perry has served congregations in Texas (Zion Lutheran, Fredericksburg), and in Iowa (Bethany Lutheran, Thompson; Immanuel Lutheran, Independence; and St. Mark’s Lutheran, Marion). Perry has additional training and interest in conflict resolution practices and community organizing for service in crisis. In his current call, with Perry’s leadership and other members of the congregation, St. Mark’s created and manages the Lutheran Disaster Assistance fund (LDA). This fund has been extremely helpful to LCMC congregations in the aftermath of natural disasters, most recently the hurricanes and forest fires that affected millions of people. Perry’s work will focus on continuing the development of call committee coaching, call committee workshops, and the certification process. He will work with the Ministry Board to develop leadership events and oversee our list of pastors serving in many different capacities. Perry also hopes to train and equip pastors and others for effective conflict resolution and helping our pastors to equip members for ministry. Perry is married to Marlys and they live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They have three children: Chantal, 26, in Cedar Rapids; Ashley, 23, in Atlanta, GA; and Caleb, 20, attending the University of Iowa.
