Two hundred and fifty cultural
exchange professionals representing
182 organisations gathered in the
InterContinental Hotel, Miami, USA last
month for three days of sector-focused
seminars, business appointments,
board meet ings and networking
receptions.
! The Work Experience Travel
Market & IAPA Annual Conference
(WETM-IAC), now in its seventh year,
has become the most significant trading
opportunity for cultural exchange
programme providers.
! With an amazing 2,210 pre-
scheduled business appointments
delegates had plenty opportunity to
reinforce existing partnerships and to
develop new business relationships with
organisations from more than 43
participating countries.
Four fascinating seminars provided
excellent, sector relevant information
and research. There was ample
opportunity for delegates to network
and socialize outside of the official
trading environment through a wide
range of social events, including a highly
successful networking dinner. The large
number of first-time delegates and non-
member organisations added an extra
dimension to the conference and
confirms that the Au Pair Industry
continues to thrive!

“Dear IAPA members and colleagues,
It was great to meet so many of you during a
very successful WETM-IAC in Miami, USA. I
would like to thank you for all the positive
reactions we received, clearly the new set up
of our conference created more opportuni-
ties for our business. With the start of a new
‘calendar year’ for our Industry, IAPA is
launching its Quality Campaign. The Cam-
paign will see IAPA visit several Latin Ameri-
can and Asian countries in its drive to
promote the formation of National Au Pair
Associations to improve the quality of
both outbound and inbound programmes.
On behalf of the IAPA Executive Board I
wish all of you a beneficial time to come.”

Sandra Landau, Chair of the British Au Pair Agencies As-
sociation (BAPAA) announced at the AGM the important
UK Government decision that Au Pairs placed through a
BAPAA registered organisation will be exempt from the
Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS).
All Au Pairs placed in the UK were required to register with
t h e I n d e p e n d e n t
Safeguarding Author-
ity (ISA). This would
have been unafford-
able and would have resulted in significant delays in plac-
ing Au Pairs with their host families. The issue was resolved
by permitting all Au Pairs to the UK through a BAPAA reg-
istered organisation to be exempt from the Vetting and
Baring Scheme.
This significant change in policy reflects the power National
Au Pair Associations can yield. With the launch of the IAPA
2010 Quality Campaign, IAPA continues to encourage the
formation of National Au Pair Associations to help drive
policy, quality and standards forward.

many years of dedicated management of our Association.
Paul was always available for IAPA members, his absolute
confidential and diplomatic personality is unique. Thinking
back of a very pleasant cooperation between Paul, the
IAPA members and the IAPA Executive Board we all re-
member his farewell words and the tears we more or less
all had. We all will certainly miss Paul and wish him all the
best in his further career.”

A MESSAGE FROM
PAUL BROWNE
“Dear IAPA Members, colleagues and friends,
After nine thoroughly enjoyable years as your Association
Manager I have finally made the decision to move on to
pastures new, and will subsequently be handing over the
reigns of IAPA to your new Association Manager, Ms Laura
Daly at the end of April.
During my time with IAPA I have been fortunate enough to
travel the world and meet with the many characters that
make the au pair industry truly unique. It really has been a
privilege to be given an insight into this wonderful cultural
exchange programme that provides so many life-changing
opportunities to thousands of young people every year.
Knowing we have, and do make a difference makes me
very proud of what we have achieved.
IAPA is only as strong as its constituent members, and I
know you will continue to raise the industry standards and
promote the au pair experience whenever and wherever
possible.
I would like to thank the
members of the Executive
Board, past and present,
whose dedication to IAPA is
an inspiration to us all, my
colleagues both here in
Denmark and Amsterdam,
and finally, but certainly not
least, you the members.
Thank you all for your friend-
ship, kind words and advice,
you really have made my time with IAPA an
experience I will never forget. IAPA is (was) my “baby”, and
I care what happens to both the Association and you the
members. As I said to those of you I met in Miami, “I’m not
disappearing off the face of the Earth”, so keep in touch
and let me know what’s going on.
Kindest Regards,
Paul.”
