animal spies, including a Spy Komodo
Dragon, Spy Puffin, Spy Stork, Spy Koala,
Spy Seal, Spy Gorilla, and more.
“Spy in the Wild is one of our most
innovative and ambitious films. It gives
us an intimate look inside the animal
world as never seen before, inspiring
us to completely rethink the way we
view and understand animals. The sequel
places even more ‘spies’ in the middle
of some of nature’s greatest events,
and there’s never a shortage of sur-
prises,” said Nature executive producer
Fred Kaufman.
The series is off to a steamy start as
the spy creatures visit The Tropics
(Wed Apr 29th, 8 p.m.). Spy
Gorilla becomes part of a real
gorilla family in Uganda, but
will he meet with the approval
of the great Silverback? Spy
Baby Elephant uncovers the
secret world of pygmy forest
elephants in Borneo, and Spy Cub
SINGING GORILLAS. A dramatic hippo
fight. Massive Komodo dragons on the
hunt for mates. These are just a few
of the many fascinating moments cap-
tured on camera in Spy in the Wild 2,
a Nature miniseries premiering this
month on THIRTEEN.
The four-part series is a sequel to
Spy in the Wild, the groundbreaking 2017
Nature miniseries that offered an unprec-
edented look inside the animal world as
seen through the lenses of animatronic
spy cameras—or “spycams”—disguised
as animals, secretly recording behavior
in the wild. Enjoy an even closer
look at some of the planet’s
most fascinating crea-
tures, filmed by a
brand-new fleet
of more than 50

gets a privileged view of a rare roman-
tic moment between jaguars in Brazil.
In The North (Wed May 6th, 8 p.m.),
Spy Macaque records how snow monkeys
bathe and socialize at steaming hot
thermal pools in the snow-covered moun-
tains of Japan. In Canada, Spy Snake
slithers along with male garter snakes
to discover an imposter: a male pretend-
ing to be a female. In England, things
get nutty for Spy Squirrel, who becomes
caught in a fight between rival stags
fighting over females.
The spy creatures explore the islands
of the Southern Seas in The Islands
(Wed May 13th, 8 pm.). Spy Koala cap-
tures the action-packed breeding
behavior of these normally slow-moving
animals in footage filmed at Australia’s
Kangaroo Island before the recent dev-
astating fires. On Christmas Island, Spy
Crab joins an army of red crabs as they
emerge from burrows following a
monsoon and march to the sea where
they perform a victory dance that shakes
their thousands of eggs into the ocean.
In the final episode, The Poles (Wed
May 20th, 8 p.m.), Spy Chick gains an
intimate view of life inside a penguin
colony on the island of South Georgia.
Spy Puffin joins male puffins on Norway’s
Hornøya Island as they gather in the
snow and search for their life-long part-
ners. On Ellesmere Island, Spy Pup wins
the trust of Arctic wolf cubs, who head
out on their first hunt watched from
above by Spy Snowy Owl.

ON APRIL 15, 2019, the world watched
in shock as Notre Dame, the iconic
cathedral in Paris, was ravaged by a
fast-spreading fire and engulfed in
flames. All humanity feared this mas-
terpiece of Gothic architecture—one of
the most famous cathedrals in the world—
would be lost forever.
But Notre Dame stood firm. Four
days after the devastating fire, architects
and construction workers were able to
stabilize the damaged structure of the
famed cathedral. “It’s a miracle that the
cathedral is still standing, and that all
the relics were saved,” a Paris fire service
official told The Associated Press.
What methods did the builders of
Notre Dame employ to erect this iconic
monument of Gothic art more than 800
years ago, and how did it emerge over
the centuries as one of the world’s most
celebrated and best-loved buildings?
SECRETS OF THE DEAD:
BUILDING NOTRE DAME
TUE 28TH, 8 P.M.
Find out in Secrets of the Dead: Build-
ing Notre Dame, premiering this month
on THIRTEEN.
This new documentary takes viewers
on a major historical and scientific inves-
tigation into the construction of Notre
Dame, which began in the 12th century
and was completed several hundred years
later, then the highest cathedral in Europe.
The world’s leading experts on Notre
Dame—writers, historians, engineers,
architects, and artisans—uncover the vast
architectural, technical, human, financial,
and political challenges that played out
during cathedral’s turbulent history. Spec-
tacular 3D animated sequences bring the
cathedral’s extraordinary history to life.
In an exclusive interview filmed inside
the cathedral, British novelist Ken Follett,
a specialist in cathedral building sites in
the Middle Ages, explains why Notre
Dame is the most important construction

A Parisian Icon
of medieval Europe and the ultimate
“symbol of European civilization.”
Yaan Potin, a historian and archivist
at the University Paris XIII, analyzes the
evolution of Notre Dame as an object of
national worship and the worldwide
emotion the 2019 fire aroused.
Olivier de Châlus, a PhD student in
architectural history in Paris and a member
of the scientific team at Notre Dame,
shares fascinating insights about the
innovative medieval construction tech-
niques used to create the historic church.
As today’s architects work to restore
Notre Dame, they face many of the same
challenges that vexed 19th-century archi-
tect Viollet-le-Duc. Should they rebuild
exactly as before? Should they innovate?
Or should the world-famous cathedral—
a place of worship for Catholics, a national
symbol for the French, and a gem of
global architectural heritage for all—return
as closely as possible to the original
structure from the Middle Ages?
“We will keep the old stones, which
may be damaged but are structurally
sound,” says Philippe Villeneuve, the
chief architect in charge of Notre Dame’s
restoration. “They are like the monu-
ment’s expressive wrinkles.”
Secrets of the Dead: Building Notre
Dame will be available to stream
beginning April 28th via the Secrets
of the Dead website (pbs.org/

THIRTEEN HAS LONG BEEN your home
for great British programs, from epic
costume dramas to riveting mysteries
that keep you at the edge of your seat.
Our popular Sunday night line-up is
about to become even more scintillat-
ing thanks to some exciting April
premieres. So get ready to tune in,
stream, binge watch—and enjoy!
World on Fire (Sun Apr 5th-May
17th, 9 p.m.), a seven-part Masterpiece
miniseries, follows the intertwining fates
of several families in Britain, Poland,
France, Germany, and the United States
during the first year of World War II as
daily life in Europe is about to be demol-
ished by the Nazi invasion of Poland,
the near debacle at Dunkirk, the fall of
Paris, and more.
Helen Hunt (Mad About You, Shake-
speare Uncovered) stars as Nancy
Campbell, an American radio reporter
in Warsaw and Berlin trying to uncover
the truth about the Nazi regime. Sean
Bean (Game of Thrones) plays Douglas
Bennett, a World War I veteran-turned-
pacifist trying to cope with chronic
shellshock while looking after his work-
ing-class family. Julia Brown (Shetland)
is Bennett’s daughter Lois, a feisty
armed services entertainer involved in
a romance with upper-class translator
Harry Chase (Jonah Hauer-King, Howards
End on Masterpiece)—much to the
dismay of his mother Robina, (Lesley
Manville, Phantom Thread), a British
fascist sympathizer. The stellar cast
also includes Zofia Wichlacz (The
Romanoffs) as Polish resistance fighter
Kasia Tomaszeski, and Brian J. Smith
as Webster O’Connor, an American
doctor in occupied Paris enamored
with a jazz musician named Albert
(Parker Sawyers).
The Windermere Children (Sun 5th,
10 p.m.), tells the story of a group of
teenaged Holocaust survivors sent to
England’s remote, picturesque Lake
District for a period of rehabilitation
before re-entering society. The moving
drama is inspired by a remarkable true
story. In 1945, the British government
accepted nearly 750 children rescued
from Auschwitz and Belsen concentra-
tion camps, and 300 of these young,
orphaned Jewish refugees were brought
to Windermere before being found
permanent homes.
The powerful drama follows a child
psychologist, an art therapist, a sports
coach, and a philanthropist who have
four months to help the children reclaim
their lives. The cast includes Thomas
Kretschmann (The Pianist), Romola
Garai (The Miniaturist on Masterpiece),
Iain Glen (Game Of Thrones, Mrs. Wilson
on Masterpiece) and Tim McInnerny.
Also this month, there’s no shortage
of thrills in Baptiste (Sun Apr 12th-May
17th, 10 p.m.), a six-part Masterpiece
crime drama set in Amsterdam. Tchéky
Karyo revives his role as French detec-
tive and missing persons expert Julien
Baptiste in this spin-off of the popular
BBC series, which also stars Jessica Raine
(Call the Midwife). While visiting his
daughter in Amsterdam, Baptiste
becomes drawn into a missing persons
case that may be connected to a sex
trafficking gang. As he searches for a
missing prostitute in the seamy red light
district, he uncovers a complex web of
deceit and lies that may prove deadly
for him and his family.
As a THIRTEEN member, you can binge watch all seven episodes of World on
Fire and all six episodes of Baptiste the night of the premiere with THIRTEEN
Passport (thirteen.org/passport), our extensive, on-demand library of public
television programming.

FIND OUT WHY SOME CHILDREN are severely damaged
by early adversity while others thrive in this documen-
tary by Roger Weisberg. By revisiting childhood trauma
victims profiled decades ago, the film—part of THIR-
TEEN’s Chasing the Dream initiative on poverty and
opportunity —illustrates how their experiences shaped
their adult lives. These narratives and commentary from
experts reveal the devastating impact of childhood
adversity, as well as the resilience of these individuals.

Blood Sugar Rising
Wed 15th, 9 p.m.
DIABETES AND PRE-DIABETES AFFECT over
100 million people in the United States, costing
more than $325 billion each year. Blood Sugar
Rising takes a close look at this epidemic,
putting human faces to these statistics, and
exploring the history and science of diabetes
through the personal stories of Americans
living with the disease. It also shines a light
on the scientific insights and innovations offer-
ing new hope in the fight against diabetes.
