Wildcats Storylines ...COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Trailing 35-10 in the third quarter last week, the Wildcats fired to a 32-0 run, besting Archbishop Hoban, 42-41. The 25-point comeback now stands as the largest in school history. JAMES AND JACK ATTACK: The Wildcats will split the carries at running back on Saturday between James Crosby and Jack Welcsh, as they’ve done in the first three weeks. The Wildcats utilized a pass-heavy scheme against Hoban, but with Jack Welcsh playing primarily on offense, the Wildcats will look to establish the run. Crosby has also become a big re-ceiving threat, especially after catching a 30-yard TD pass last week.

GENERAL GRIFFIN: The Wildcats’ field general at quarterback is Grif-fin Hanna. The senior signalcaller orchestrated the comeback vs. Hoban, completing 18-of-35 passes for 270 yards and 4 touchdowns. His feats earned him USA TODAY Top Star of the Week recognition. Hanna called the plays in the second half last week, utilizing a hurry-up offense to keep Hoban off-guard. Hanna may do the same this week.

SPREADING THE WEALTH: All season, the Wildcats have spread the ball to all of the team’s wideouts. Ten different players have catches this sea-son, and four Wildcats have receiving TDs. Seven wideouts caught a pass against Hoban. That trend will continue, with senior Connor Cmiel leading the group. The senior has 9 receptions for 226 yards and 2 TDs.

THE BIG UGLIES: The Wildcats’ linemen have played well this year, on both sides of the ball. On offense, Hanna has been sacked only three times, with very few quarterback hits. On defense, the Wildcats’ big men have worn down opposing offensive lines over the course of games. Men-tor’s Brian Trobel and Hoban’s Deamonte Trayanum both enjoyed nice games against the Wildcats, but overall, the defensive line has played well. Nose tackle Max Watters should return to action this week, too.

RETURN OF THE MAC: The return of Michael McNamara to the defense helped greatly last week. After missing time due to injury, McNamara played quite well vs. the Knights, notching 8 tackles, 1 sack, and 4.5 tack-les for loss. Linebacker mates Aidan Hubbard and Aidan Conway will also have big roles this week.

NO FLY ZONE: Against Hoban, the Wildcats forced Shane Hamm to pass the ball. The gameplan worked well, with the Wildcats sacking him twice and forcing him to fumble late in the game. The Wildcats’ second-ary will be on guard against Malakai Anthony this week, too. Free safety Merick Hartley will look to continue his strong season, with 13.5 tackles, 2 blocked kicks, and 1 pass breakup in three games.

BIG BOOT: Kicker Declan Mangan put on a show last week. The junior converted field goals of 56 and 53 yards, the second and fourth longest kicks in school history. Mangan also boomed six-of-eight kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks against Hoban. For his efforts, Mangan was named the Kohl’s Kicking National Player of the Week.

CAPTAINS: The four captains for the 2019 season are #10 Griffin Hanna, #34 Jack Welcsh, #44 Michael McNamara, and #71 Nick Schwitzgebel.

THE MATCHUP ABOUT THE WILDCATS ...

The Wildcats’ epic 25-point comeback vs. Archbishop Hoban last week now stands as the largest in Saint Ignatius foot-ball history. But Friday’s victory is far from the only come-from-be-hind win in Saint Ignatius history. In Week 4 of the 2002 season, the Wildcats also found them-selves trailing to a powerhouse program – Massillon Washington. The Tigers outgained Saint Ignatius in the first half, 236-74, en route to a 14-3 lead. An inter-ception return for a touchdown with two mintues left in the third quarter set the lead at 21-3. The 18-point advantage must have seemed insurmountable to the Tigers fans at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. Alas, it was not. Brian Hoyer ’04 began the comeback with a 37-yard strike to Anthony Gonzalez for six, narrow-ing the deficit to two scores with just seconds left in the third. The lead shrunk to just 21-16 with 9:59 left in the fourth quarter. Two Hoyer completions placed the Cats in striking distance, and a 35-yard TD strike to Gonzalez finished the drive. Massillon’s offense made grave errors on its next drive, com-mitting several penalties before throwing near Gonzalez. The Saint Ignatius Athletic Hall of Famer and current Congressman picked off the pass and returned it 15 yards for a score. Even with an unsuccessful 2-point conversion, the Cats led, 22-21. The Tigers again turned the ball over on its next drive on a fumble. Hoyer found Gonzalez on a 25-yard pass, setting up a 2-yard Joe Palcko TD with 4:41 left. The Wildcats had a 29-21 lead. In the last minutes, the Tigers drove down the field. But the Cats’ D stayed strong for the win.

Learning about the Stags ...RETURN OF A LEGEND: Bill McGregor has returned to coach De-Matha this season after leading the Stags for 29 seasons. McGregor transformed DeMatha into a national football powerhouse during his initial tenure from 1982-2010. He spent the past 8 seasons as an as-sistant at Gilman School and St. Frances Academy.

FELLOW BLUE STREAKS: As it so happens, Bill McGregor and Chuck Kyle attended John Carroll University (a Jesuit school in University Heights, Ohio) together in the 1970s. McGregor graduated two years before Kyle, but the two played football together for the Blue Streaks, as did Wildcats’ offensive coordinator Nick Restifo.

ANTHONY ATTACK: In the offseason, DeMatha lost its quarterback to graduation. No matter. The Stags added a star transfer from nearby Woodrow Wilson High School – Malakai Anthony. The 6’2, 208-pound pro style QB tabbed 1,500 passing yards, 500 rushing yards, and 20 total touchdowns for Wilson last year. He’s drawn of-fers from Columbia and Seton Hill, and drawn attention from Divi-sion I programs. Anthony is very active in the pocket and an apt scrambler, but he’s a pass-first quarterback. Anthony is also a rare southpaw quarterback.

MARSHAWN MANIA: The bellcow of the Stags offense is without a doubt MarShawn Lloyd. The 5’9, 206 running back drew offers from a range of Division I schools before choosing South Carolina. Lloyd is a strong, fast back who runs to daylight. He has good vision in finding open running lanes and the speed to blow by defenders. Lloyd is also a dangerous pass catcher. The Wildcats have faced very good running backs so far this season in Brian Trobel and Deamonte Trayanum, but Lloyd might be better than both.

THE BIG BOYS: DeMatha has plenty of Division I commits, with at least 15 D1 prospects, according to Coach Kyle. One of the Stags’ biggest commits is Dwayne Allick, a big, strong offensive tackle. A Boston College commit, Allick is the leader of the O-line. Coziah Iz-zard helms the defensive line as a returning starter and Penn State commit. Inside linebacker Greg Penn III is another huge weapon at inside linebacker, standing at 6’1, 225. The junior has drawn offers from Alabama, Florida, Cincinnati, and several others.

DEFENSIVE SCHEMES: Under McGregor, DeMatha will typically line up in a 4-man front. The Wildcats have faced two teams that use 4-man lines – Loyola and Hoban. DeMatha’s size and speed presents a unique challenge for the Cats, as the Stags have plenty of top tal-ent in the front seven. The Stags also like to mix up blitz packages, so the Wildcats’ offensive will need to be smart on pre-play reads.

MAN-T0-MAN: For the most part, DeMatha likes to play man cover-age. DeMatha will mix in the occasional zone coverage scheme, but mostly the Wildcats will be seeing man coverage. The Stags have plenty of speed in the secondary to do so, but look for the Wildcats to showcase different formations and play types to isolate Connor Cmiel over the top without safety help. Safety Saieed Myers will be a key player for DeMatha – he’s played well this year.

DL/TE SAM DAUGSTRUP ’20The senior played de-fensive line last week for the first time since his sophomore sea-son, and did quite well. Daugstrup will again play a signficant role against DeMatha, as the Wildcats look to slow a dangerous Stags’ rush-ing attack. Daugstup will also play plenty on offense, serving as a power tight end. Daugstrup provides an outlet for Hanna and a strong blocking force for the run game.

The sophomore has played well at center all season long, and needs to have another good game on Saturday. Montgomery will play a central role in stopping a fierce DeMatha de-fense, which features a 4-man front. Montgom-ery and the offensive line will need to pave lanes for the running game and keep Griffin Hanna clean to power the offense.

Even after a win over a 4-time defending state champion, the road does not become any easier for the men of Ohio City.Instead, one could make the case, the journey be-

comes even more difficult. The Saint Ignatius football program will pack up on Friday and drive six hours on a bus destined for Landover, Maryland to face one of the top programs in the country, the DeMatha Catholic Stags.DeMatha has earned high billing in several national

polls, including USA TODAY’s Super 25. Competing in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference with other national powers, DeMatha has compiled its fair share of titles. Coaching legend Bill McGregor returned to the

helm this season for DeMatha. Compiling a 278-40-3 record from 1982-2010, McGregor spent 2011-18 as an assistant coach at two other Maryland schools before returning to DeMatha. As it turns out, McGregor was a classmate and

teammate of Chuck Kyle ‘69 and Nick Restifo Hon. ‘19 at John Carroll University. The JCU connection led to a scheduling of a home-and-home between Saint Ignatius and DeMatha. SAINT IGNATIUS OFFENSE VS. DEMATHA

DEFENSEWith Griffin Hanna calling the plays in the second

half last week, the Saint Ignatius offense exploded. The Wildcats utilized a hurry-up approach to over-come a 25-point deficit, and the strategy worked to perfection.Depending on the gameflow, the Wildcats may

choose to use the tactic again. Either way, Week 3 showcased the wide range of weapons the Wildcats have on the offensive side of the ball.Connor Cmiel leads the weapons as a speedster

wideout with great hands. Henry Cook, Jack Dun-stan, and Alec LaSpina have all contributed and will be looked towards on Saturday. Tight ends Jake Lang and Sam Daugstrup have also proved reliable. As for the rushing game, Jack Welcsh and James

Crosby each have speed and elusiveness. Welcsh has established himself as a ground-and-pound runner who will attack you on every play. The game may be won in the trenches, though. The

Saint Ignatius offensive line has played well this year, and will need another stellar effort on Saturday. Penn State commit Coziah Izzard leads a strong and quick DeMatha D-line that will line up four men on the line of scrimmage. Greg Penn III is a dynamic inside line-backer who will also play a key role.DeMatha often employs man coverage, using its

quick corners to shut down wideouts. The Stags may mix in the occasional zone coverage, too, with

creative blitz packages. Safety Saieed Myers, who played well in the season opener against St. John Bosco, will play a critical role in limiting the Wild-cats over the top and helping out sometimes in stopping the run. SAINT IGNATIUS DEFENSE VS. DEMATHA

OFFENSEEarly on in the season, the Wildcats faced injury

woes on defense. Now, the Wildcats (knock on wood) are nearly back to full strength.Linebacker Michael McNamara returned to ac-

tion against Hoban and made a titanic difference. The captain tallied 8 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Nose tackle Max Watters also figures to return this week.Sam Daugstrup joined the defensive line unit

and played quite well last week. The senior turned in an excellent effort playing both ways, track-ing down tacklers on defense and paving running lanes on offense. He’ll be key again on Saturday.Other Wildcats to watch include linebacker Aidan

Hubbard and free safety Merick Hartley. Both have been important playmakers this season. As a whole, the Wildcats will need to tackle in

one-on-one situations on Saturday. DeMatha has no lack of playmakers.Chief among them is running back MarShawn

Lloyd. The 5’9, 206-pound running back is a fero-cious runner with excellent vision. Heavily recruit-ed, Lloyd chose South Carolina in the offseason. The Wildcats have faced some great backs this year, but Lloyd might be the best runner the Cats see all season. Quarterback Malakai Anthony is no less talented.

The 6’2, 208-pound signalcaller is a dual-threat weapon, with fast feet and a lively arm. A pass-first, pro-style QB, Anthony can sling it downfield but is also evasive in the pocket. The Wildcats will look to dial up creative blitzes and coverages to confuse the southpaw. Boston College commit Dwayne Allick is one of

the strong offensive linemen tasked with protect-ing Anthony. A returning starter at tackle, Allick leads a big O-line that has kept Anthony safe. SPECIAL TEAMSCoach Kyle said at the start of the year that he

would use special teams as a weapon. Kyle un-leashed kicker Declan Mangan for field goals of 53 and 56 yards against Hoban. Mangan also fired six-of-eight kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. Look for more of the same this week. The Stags’ kicking game is nearly as impressive.

DeMatha is not afraid to launch long field goals, and often puts kickoffs in the end zone, too.

HOBAN RECAP

Trailing the Knights 35-10 in the third quarter, all hope seemed lost for Saint Ignatius. But the Wildcats never lost faith. In the greatest comeback in Saint Ignatius football history, the Wildcats fired out on a 32-0 run. A last-ditch Hoban effort fell flat, and the Wildcats ended Hoban’s 31-game winning streak. The game began on a high note. The Wildcats re-

ceived the opening kickoff and marched right down the field. Led by starting quarterback Griffin Hanna, the Wildcats cut through the Knights’ defense with author-ity. The senior signalcaller completed the opening drive with a beautiful pass to Henry Cook for a touchdown. The senior wideout ran a flag route from the slot and hauled in the pass perfectly.Hoban’s offense started to gain traction later in the

first quarter. Deamonte Trayanum scored his first of several touchdowns on a 17-yard scamper to tie it. The Knights took the lead after stopping the Wildcats.

Hamm managed to push through for a touchdown on a quarterback sneak. A fumble on the ensuing kickoff gave the Knights the ball in the waning seconds in the opening stanza.Less than two minutes into the second quarter, the

Knights cashed in on the turnover. Trayanum found paydirt on a 15-yard dash, extending the lead to 14. The advantage grew to 21 less than a minute later. Hoban’s defense forced a fumble in the backfield, and returned it 30 yards to the house. With 9:26 left to play in the second, the Wildcats found themselves trailing, 28-7.The Wildcats’ offense did not get disheartened, mov-

ing down the field before stalling at the Hoban 36-yard line. Declan Mangan trotted into the game with his big boot. The junior hit a bomb from 53 yards to narrow the gap to 28-10. The score stood at half. As inclement weather threatened, the outlook be-

came bleaker at the start of the second half. The Knights quickly rolled down the field before finding the end zone again. This time, Trayanum took a pass to the flat, found the edge, and sped 37 yards for a touch-down. Hoban led, 35-10.But the Wildcats did not lose faith. The first spark of the comeback flew just 37 seconds

after Trayanum’s touchdown. An unlikely hero stepped to the fore – Alec LaSpina. The junior ran a deep post and caught a perfect pass

for a 63-yard touchdown, the first catch of LaSpina’s varsity career. The play changed the momentum of the game and spurred the start of one of the most incred-ible comebacks that Saint Ignatius fans have ever seen. After another stop on defense, the Wildcats drew to

within 11 points just a couple minutes later. The Wild-cats transitioned to a hurry-up offense, which worked. After a few nice plays, Hanna found himself scrambling

in the pocket. Running out of options, Hanna tossed a pass to a waiting James Crosby in the flat. The senior used a block from Jake Lang to dash untouched into the end zone for a critical touchdown. The Wildcats only trailed, 35-24, with 7:30 left to play in the third.Yet again, the Wildcats’ defense stood strong, giving

the offense another opportunity to catch up. The Wild-cats did just that. Declan Mangan fired up the ol’ leg again, this time from an incredible 56 yards out. Man-gan’s money kick now stands as the second longest kick in school history, behind only Matthew Trickett’s booming 59-yarder in 2017. The third quarter ended with a Wildcats’ defensive

stand and a missed field goal. The Cats still trailed, 35-27, but the momentum was on Saint Ignatius’ side.Franzinger’s men changed the game a couple drives

later. Forced to scramble out of the pocket because of a McNamara pass rush, Hamm fled to look for a check-down. Rico Levert tracked him down, forcing a fumble that Bennett Adler quickly pounced on. The Wildcats had the ball first and 10 from the Hoban 15-yard line.A few plays later, Ashton Montgomery plowed a huge

lane for Jack Welcsh. Aided by a Sam Daugstrup block, Welcsh charged up the middle. The senior back was met around the 2-yard line before Daugstrup pushed him into the end zone for six.Trailing by two points, the Wildcats tried a 2-point

conversion. Hanna handed it to Welcsh on a run to the right. Welcsh gave it off to Henry Cook dashing to the opposite side on a fancy reverse, and aided by a Nick Schwitzgebel seal block, Cook fired into the end zone. The score stood at 35-35 with 5:14 left to play.Hoban once again failed to move the ball down the

field on the next drive, with a three-and-out for the second straight time. Hanna went for it all on a pass downfield to Cmiel

on the ensuing drive. Running a fly route, Cmiel came open and Hanna found him in stride. Cmiel caught it easily and strode into the end zone, giving the Wildcats the lead for the first time since 4:04 in the first quarter, at 42-35, with two minutes left. The Knights refused to surrender. Senior Ja’Sean Cog-

burn found an opening on the ensuing kickoff return and dashing 96 yards for a touchdown. The Wildcats blocked the extra point, but drew a pen-

alty, advancing Hoban to the 1-yard line. The Knights decided to attempt a 2-point conversion for the win.Running behind his big uglies, Hamm looked to sneak

up the middle. But linebacker Michael McNamara stopped him, preserving the lead at 42-41.The Wildcats recovered the onside kick, ran out the

clock, and so ended the largest comeback in Saint Ignatius football history.

8001 Sheriff Rd, Landover, MDBuilt: 2000Playing Surface: Field TurfSeating Capacity: 5,500 When the Washington Redskins built a new home in Landover, Maryland in 1996, a huge new “sportsplex” was planned on 80 acres adjoining FedEx Field. As the Wash-ington Post reported in 2000, “the complex was built as part of the deal with Redskins when they won the right to construct nearby FedEx Field” in Landover, which sits northeast of Washington, D.C. After some delays, the facility was unveiled in May 2000. The Prince George’s Sports & Learning Com-plex cost $31 million. At the dedication, Prince George’s County Executive Wayne K. Curry (D) said the complex “is unparalleled in Prince George’s County [...] Nobody in America has a facility like this one.” The interior portion hosts two Olympic-sized swim-ming pools, a 40,000-square-foot gymnastics center, a 20,000-square-foot fitness center, and a 75,000-square-foot field house. The field house contains a 200-meter indoor track, volleyball and basketball courts. Marvin F. Wilson Stadium, housing the outdoor field and track, can hold 5,500 spectators and is equipped with a press box, locker rooms, restrooms, and conces-sion stands. The track is 8 lanes and 400 meters long. The turfed field can used football, soccer, lacrosse, or rugby. The stadium’s namesake, Marvin F. Wilson, served as mayor of Glenarden and as a council member represent-ing Landover and other surrounding areas. Wilson passed away in January 2015. The Learning Center hosts space for classes, storytell-ing, and lectures. The publicy funded facility now hosts a wide range of events. DeMatha Catholic hosts many of its football games at Marvin F. Wilson Stadium, about 6.5 miles away from its Hyattsville campus.
