The 503 chocolate brand is a mid-range chocolate brand that I made. The chocolate would be both based and made here in Portland, and each chocolate product would have a pattern based on the structure of local park and bear a linework that gives these wrappers both a local and handmade quality.

WRITTEN SAMPLE: Pulp Fiction may be a cinematic landmark, but its opening titles were quite forgettable. My goal for this project was to give the film a more iconic and visually stimulating open-ing title sequence. After researching criticisms of the film, I found literary analyses arguing that the film has strong philosophical themes, claiming that the generation seen in Pulp Fiction lacks the religious icons and optimism of previous generations. Instead, they’re replaced with chain restaurants, pop culture figures, and cynicism. I wanted to reflect this in the title sequence by giving it a “low budget” and worn tone. I also found out that the director, Quentin Tarantino, is influenced by filmmaker Sergio Leone, and upon learning this I realized that Pulp Fiction bears subtle stylistic similarities to Leone’s The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Looking to continue that similarity, I drew influence from that film’s title sequence, which had big splashes of color.

After experimenting with paint and cutouts, I decided on using splashes of paint against colorful paper backgrounds. Each new splash of paint would create a new background and character with a cutout head. These were made from a combination of vectors, images, and scans, as I found the digital version flowed better. To incorporate the “fast food religion” vibe into the piece I drew inspiration from the color palette that McDonalds uses in its promotional material and ads. For typography I experimented with several 70s styled typefaces, I was advised by my professor (and then my friend Colin) to create a typeface that looked cut out, complimenting the energy of the paint changes. The typeface that

I made was based on the Rama Slab from the film’s promotions.

Halfway through the credit sequence in Pulp Fiction the first song is replaced with a broken record, then a song more associated with dancing than the mariachi trumpet that came before it. To show this I had a broken VCR effect occur (it is set in the 90s, after all) when the record would scratch, and then had the scene change to neon characters dancing against a black background. Many peers and professors suggested that instead of simply having the characters dance, I provide variations of the dancing characters at different sizes and areas, which helped the sequence keeps its momentum and energy.

In retrospect, this piece has opportunities for some additional experimentation in scale and use of type. The text stays consistent throughout the entire piece, and in such a consistently flowing and changing sequence, it’s a shame not to experiment with the type changing with it. The same can be said for the size of the type and the type hierarchy However, I ultimately find this credits sequence to successfully convey the themes and tones I that was hoping for, and it allowed me to expand my experience in hand made type.

I never felt that the book covers I saw for Douglas Adams’ superb Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series ever captured Adam’s concepts of isolation and sad, miniscule — yet strangely comedic — tragedies occuring throughout his books. Using the concept of scale, this book cover provides a depiction of these themes.

Join Douglas Adams’s hapless hero Arthur Dent as he travels the galaxy with his pal Ford Prefect, getting into messes and generally wreaking rather hilarious havoc. Dent is grabbed from Earth just moments before a cosmic construction team obliterates the planet to build a freeway. You will never tread funnier science ction; Adams is a master of intelligent satire, barbed wit, and comedic dialogue. The Hitchhiker’s Guide is rich in comedic detail and thought-provoking situations and stands up to multiple reads.

Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked o the planet by friend Ford Prefect, a eld researcher for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who,has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by The Hitchhiker’s Guide (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”) and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeble-brox, the two-headed, far out president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend, a woman from Earthwhom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years.

Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don’t forget to bring a towel!

During the summer of 2014 I worked at the Sitka Conservation Society, where I was tasked with creating promotional materials for the organization and its events. Two of my goals that I had going into this internship were to expand my experience with vectors and colors in my design work, and these edited pieces demonstrate my growth in these criterias.

Because the font that I chose, Adelle, is such an adaptable typeface, I decided to have my specimen book envoke several formats that Adelle is commonly associated with. These formats included books, newspapers, editorials, and, last but certainly not least, magazines.

The Forest Park TrailFest is an all ages running event coinciding with National Trails Day designed by Ben Boro and I. Together we designed the branding of the festival, including the wordmark, maps, takeaways, and wayfinding. By finding a successful marriage of our styles, Ben and I have crafted an event branding that is fun and playful and feels local.

The Edinburgh Tavern brewery is a brand I created for an ale that is inspired by 19th century Edinburgh, where each ale bears the face of an iconic figure associated with Edinburgh from that time period. The design of the bottle combines the older style and flourishes from that time period with a more contemporary, sleek design.

CLASSIC ALE

edinburgh tavern brewery is run by Edinburgh Scots based in Portland. To celebrate our heritage, we give each of our ales a taste of 19th century Edinburgh, one of the most exciting times for our home city. Each of our ales has an image of a famous icon commonly associated with Edinburgh. Our classic ale brand has Robert Louis Stevenson, a writer of classic literature. In the 19th century, Stevenson occupied taverns to socialize and be inspired by its colorful array of characters. The edinburgh tavern brand looks to assist those seeking out adventure or inspiration with our classic Edinburgh-inspired ale.

This booklet tells the story of the “open space sequence” that was designed here in Portland. Taking a page from the story of inclusion within, I designed the book to have an inviting layout that would welcome one’s attention and further-more encourage them to keep reading. Although there are photos in the book provided in class, I additionally went out into the parks and took my own to include in this book.
