FUNCTION

Introduction

We were tasked to design a “Community hub” that provides

shelter that is small , uses low technology, is low in cost,

sustainable, multifunctional, and easy to assemble. It

should facilitate a public landmark and should be designed

so that it could be repeated in different communities (i.e. it

should be flexible and should suit various areas/

communities). It should also provide an access to

information, opportunities, for learning, communication,

and social interaction.

The given site is flat. However, the hub should be designed for

a generic site (to allow for repetition thereof).

My chosen function of the “Hub” is for it to be a meeting place.

Many communities around the country have drifted apart,

where there is no longer any social interaction or

communication between them, therefore, I feel that

communities will be in need of this facility to allow for

future interaction amongst them. It could improve

community statuses, so that everyone may be helped and

assisted positively whether it be family, community, or

friend issues. Therefore, I think it should be implemented.

Provision for a masonry unit should be made, as well as to

provide a wi-fi spot, and it must be lockable after hours.

FUNCTION

Function of a community hub in

general

A building always located in a community.

Acts as a central place for people to interact.

Used for business, leisure, social activities and learning by

everyone.

*Hubs have become a popular way forward in communities as

they help to build the community through interaction with

the business elements of the hub (like a coffee shop,

restaurant, room hire, conference , etc ) generating money

to pay for the ongoing costs of the building - like heating,

electricity, maintenance.

You will not spend all day there.

Hub will provide support for you to do thing in the

community.

Place where you drop in on your way to do things you

want in the community.

A place for meeting friends/ making new ones.

Place for information.

A place for learning.

PLANNING OF MAIN FUNCTION

Page 6: Hub project

Function of amphitheatre in

general

A few definitions of an amphitheatre:

a building, usually circular or oval, in which tiers of seats

rise from a central open arena, as in those of ancient

Rome

a place where contests are held; arena

any level circular area of ground surrounded by higher

ground

the first tier of seats in the gallery of a theatre

any similarly designated seating area in a theatre

a lecture room in which seats are tiered away from a

central area

1. CPUT Main campus

amp:

This amp is a good example of a community of people coming to a central point for social

interaction. People often have functions here, where they have to inform students about issues.

Sometimes it is even used as a place where people can perform/ entertain, etc. It is very

multifunctional – students also use this area as a place for meeting, or just simple socializing.

Roman Arena,

Aries

Greek Theatre of

Dionysus

This is a traditional Roman amphitheatre.

Where audience is seated right around the central

entertainment area. These types of amps were

used mostly for sports or general entertainment.

The idea of it was for it to be an “extroverted

space” therefore, it is relevant to my chosen

function. A way to look at my design and further

build on the idea is to look at the idea of amps in

history.

This is a traditional Greek amphitheatre.

This audience is seated on one side only

arranged semi-circular around the stage.

This is also an “extroverted” space. This

could also further help me in my research on

the “form” of my project.

IntroductionProvision for a masonry unit should be made, as well as to

provide s wi-fi spot. It MUST be lockable after hours. It

should be 1m², 5m high with an access panel, and the rest

of the structure should make use of gum poles and marine

ply as its main materials.

Types of Gum Poles:

Note on gum poles

TECHNOLOGY

Treatment of Gum poles:

Untreated: for temporary structures and formwork.

Treated: for permanent structures, fencing

trusses etc.

Treated by:

•Creosote

•C. C. A. (Copper chromium arsenic)

•Tenalith

Treated is necessary for subterranean or drywood

termites, wood borers, dry rot, wet rot, soft rot,

decay, and most insects and vermin attack.

Marine ply:

TECHNOLOGY

Characteristics of Marine ply:

A type of manufactured wood made

from thin sheet of wood veneer.

Flexible, cheap, workable, recyclable,

and usually locally manufactured.

Resistance of cracking, shrinkage,

twisting, warping, water, rotting, and

generally high in strength.

It’s construction is such that it can be

used in environments exposed to

moisture for long periods.

More expensive than standard

plywood.
