Welcome to a new style of books

Since the early 1990s the Adobe’s Portable Document Format (PDF) has become the de facto standard for delivering documents in the digital world. Virtually every computer on the planet has the free Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

This book, which we call an Interactive Digital Book or IDB, incorporates many features that have been available for many years, but have been generally overlooked by book designers whose final product is a printed book.

At TheBookProducer.com, all that is about to change.

The professional software we use allows us to create a PDF that behaves much like a webpage. Meaning that text can link to other pages, roll-over buttons can be quickly made like the tabs on this book. A click of a button can make the PDF go to a full screen mode.

Even more advanced PDF can actually contain sound and video clips. We’ll show that type of example at a later time.

This “ebook” or as I prefer to call it, Interactive Digital Book, is based on Larry Winget’s original book of the same name first printed in 1993. This major update includes much of Larry’s orginal text, some new text that he provided for this version, and several sections that have been writen by myself.

Jim Weems started his professional career as a photographer for the Governor of Oklahoma, serving under three different administrations. In 1980 he was hired by an advertising agency in Tulsa. In 1984 Apple introduced the Macintosh and about a year later Jim had one on his desk. The Mac gave Jim a new creative outlet and as the Mac matured, so did Jim’s skill.

Jim formed Ad Graphics, a graphic design company, in 1990. His second invoice was to RoseTec, a commercial telephone equipment company owned by Rosemary and Larry Winget. This was the time in Larry’s life were he was making some major career changes that would eventually lead him into the world of professional speaking.

You can’t separate the beginnings of Ad Graphics and Jim Weems’ design career from the start of Win Seminars and Larry Winget’s speaking career.

After a few years of of producing various marketing pieces, Larry decided he needed to become a published author. Jim designed and typeset the “Ya Gotta’s for Success”. This was Jim’s first book project – as well as Larry’s.

The book didn’t make Larry rich, but it created a major profit center for him. Larry soon started compiling quote books, success books, sales books and even teamed up with other professional speakers to create PRODUCTS for back of room sales. Within a few years he had over a dozen books, all designed by Jim & Barb Weems of Ad Graphics. In Larry’s early days, he made more money selling products than his speaking fees generated.

As Larry’s speaking career progressed, he started spreading the word that if you want to make money as a speaker, you have to have products to sell, and BOOKS have to be your main product – and he sent everyone to Jim and Barb Weems at Ad Graphics. It was Larry that introduced Jim to the National Speakers Association (NSA).

The rest, as they say, is history.

We’ve been advertising in NSA’s Professional Speaker Magazine for over 10 years and were told by NSA staff that we are the longest continuous advertiser in that publication. Our client base is 95% NSA members.

Why Write

ABook

Best selling author Larry Winget said “a speaker without a book is leaving money on the table.” The fact is, having a book can make the difference between profit and loss for a professional speaker. I’ve always said that if a speaker has done a good job in front of their audience, they will sell books and other products. I’ve seen this myself. My Rotary club meets weekly and whenever the program speaker has a book to sell, there’s a line at his table at the end of the meeting. Back of room (BOR) sales can be big money for you.

Being a published author (even self-published) will also give you more credibility in the marketplace. We have many clients that don’t have brochures. They use their book and a well thought out letter as their main marketing tool to get speaking engagements.

Regardless of what price you put on your book, the back of the room price should be in increments of $10. Preferably $20. If your book

won’t sell for $20, offer some other product with it as a special offer, or at the very least, offer 2 books for $20.

Why? Every time you make change someone else will have to leave because of the time. Do it this way and you’ll finish the day with a fist full of twenty dollar bills!

Publish?

YES. If you have to ask then the answer is yes. Until you reach a professional position where someone else wants to invest in you by publishing your book, then self publishing is about the only way you are going to have your own book. Even if you get published, you can still add to your product line with other books that will bring you a higher profit margin in your back of room sales.

Here’s something interesting. I’ve had quite a few published authors come to me after they’ve bought back the rights to the book someone else published. It often comes down to the fact that their BOR sales outweigh the income from their publisher.

The problem is that as a general rule, they have to purchase their BOR inventory at a much higher price than if they self-published in the beginning. Before you ever sign on with a publisher, just make sure you know all the pros and cons. In your case, signing with a publisher could be the right career move. Just don’t get too excited until you’ve done your homework. What might be great for one speaker may not be good for another.

By the way, if your proposed publisher wants you to put your money in the pot then be sure to ask around. I’ve always thought of the publisher as being the one who puts up the money to produce the book.

Ebook or

Printed Book

I’ll always maintain that a speaker, trainer, preacher or anyone who has an audience should have a printed book.

A printed book is substantial. It instantly implies credibility. It should always be one of your first product and marketing goals.

An ebook is often just the PDF version of the printed book. It’s an instant product that your website visitor can purchase and you can generate some income. Ebooks have no inventory cost.

Don’t expect the traditional ebooks to create great profits. It’s just a good product to include in your online sales efforts.

HOWEVER, the rules are about to change!

Inter-Active DigitalBooks(IDB)

This is where things get interesting. This book you’re reading is an interactive digital book. As you continue through it you’ll see that it can almost function as a self-contained website, but it’s actually a super high tech PDF that’s slicker than a greased Teflon pan. You don’t need an expensive Amazon Kindle or any other device other than a computer. You only need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is on just about every computer on the planet.

I could spend a lot of time telling you about Interactive Digital Books, but I’ll just let you experience it yourself. I will tell you that this is a product that can open new doors to your product line. Imagine having your own line of books that are in full color, have very cool features, and are sold both online and on a CD for your BOR sales. The IDB is a highly marketable product and can offer you a stronger presence in your market.

A bonus of the IDB is that you can produce the CD’s on your own computer. If you start selling hundreds you’ll want them commercially produced, but by then, you’ll know for a fact that you’ve got a hot selling product.Jim Weems

Over the last several years I’ve designed 23 books for Larry Winget. Some were quote books or personal thought books that were simple to write. They all generated very high back of the room sales.

Here’s the “money” tip. Not every book you write has to be high impact content. Some books can simply be quote or tips books. The goal is to have products that you can package 3 for $20. Like the previous tip, this will put a bunch of twenty dollar bills in your pocket. This tip applies to both printed books and the interactive digital books on CD.

You need this book because you probably don’t have one (a book of your own that you have written I mean). And you need one. Really. That is, if you believe in what you have to say and care about your audiences.

But I’ll bet that isn’t the case so let’s move on. By this time you have decided that you have something to say in life. Something that people are willing to pay for. You probably get paid for saying it. You should get paid for saying it. Worthwhile thoughts and ideas are worth something. And that being the case, you should make those worthwhile thoughts available in as many forms as possible.

That means if you have a speech, you have an audio cassette. If you have a speech, you have a video. And if you have a speech, you have a book. Now most people that buy this book will have a speech. And many will even have an audio cassette. A few more will have a video. But very few will have a book. But you should have. And this book will show you how to get one.

To have something good to say and not offer it in every imaginable format is a disservice to those who need it and want it. So it’s time for you to have book. And that is why you need this book. This book teaches you how to write a book. One page at a time. And that’s why you need this book.

No kidding. Because in it you will discover that writing a book is not all that hard. Regardless of what you have been lead to believe.

It’s mainly about putting your rear end in a chair and typing. It is about transcribing your thoughts and ideas into a readable format. It is about loving what you have to say and knowing that you should share it with others because they deserve to hear it.

And it is about adding credibility to what you do. Authors are held in higher esteem in our society. Take advantage of that.

And it’s about money. Books bring in a bunch of money. Back of the room sales and mail order and retail distribution can make life much easier for you.

It is not about perfection. There are very few perfect books. So don’t worry about writing the perfect book. You won’t. That’s okay. Most people won’t read it any way. Really. I don’t mean to be ugly here but very few people actually read books. Lots of people buy books. But very few read them.

It is not about being able to spell. That is why they make spell check. And even then you won’t get them

all. Big deal. I have never read a book published by anyone that didn’t have a typo or two in it.

It is not about punctuation. Hire someone to do that for you.

It is not about knowing everything there is to know about your subject. If you had to know everything there is to know about something before you wrote a book, no books would ever be written.

Again, it’s about believing in what you do and those you do it for. Period.

You are going to be amazed how simple this book is. In fact, you might even be totally ticked off after buying it and finding out that any moron can write a book. And by the way, any moron can write a book…Rush Limbaugh did. Oops, did I offend you? Then go write your own book and say I am wrong. See how much fun it is to write a book and say what you want?

But back to how simple this book is. That is the beauty. Just write what you feel, what you know and what you think. That’s what people want when they buy your book: your knowledge, your emotion and your opinions. And don’t complicate it.

This book makes it so easy for you to go one page at a time and after a few weeks (that’s right, weeks - not months - not years - weeks!) you will have a book that you can be proud of. And a book that serves others.

In this simple little book I am going to show you how I have written all of my books. There are other ways. I don’t know what they are…and I don’t really care either, but I know they are out there. I just know that this method has worked well for me. And unless you have another way to write a book, please try mine. It will work. I promise.

It works by going one page at a time and doing exactly (or at least pretty much) what I show you to do.

Get on your computer and imitate what I do by starting at page one and going on until you are finished. It’s really that easy. Don’t get creative. At least not yet. You can do that later. Instead, just follow my example and fill in the blanks.

Put this book next to your computer and start. From this point on this book is your guide to creating your own book.

A technical note. Save what you are doing every few minutes. When you are finished for the day, back it up. Back it up on your hard disk and save it to a USB Thumb Drive. Keep the thumb drive separate from the computer in case the place catches on fire or the book thief breaks in and steals it or your system crashes or a plane crashes into your office or you do something stupid and lose your laptop or something like that.

You should also print out what you have done at the end of ever day. Is this overkill? Absolutely. But if you ever have a disaster, and I have, you will be glad that you have taken all of these precautions.

How This Book Works

USB Thumb Drives are cheap. Buy three that are big enough to back up all your most important documents. Use some kind of back up software that only backs up the files that have been change since the last back up. On the first day back up to all three new thumb drives. Mark them 1-2-3 and from then on, rotate a different thumb

drive each time you back up. This way, if a crash occurs during a backup, you should still be able to recover critical files from one of the other drives.

Starting the Chapter & the Chapter Title page on the right is normally a good formula to follow. However, if you find that you need to reduce the page count, this is one place where you can easily cut pages. Having a separate title page may seem odd if you tend to have fairly short chapters.

There are several ways to do it but if you are at all interested in

making your book longer, then begin with several well chosen quotations from credible, famous, recognizable

sources that will support your chapter subject and set the tone

for your writing. It should take about six to fill a page.

If you have plenty to say and don’t want to use any quotations, then

simply begin your writing.

my luck, I’ll drive this old thing until the wheels fall off!” Stop! Only say “with my luck” if you are going to follow it with something terrific!

I can’t afford it.

Never say “I can’t afford it.” As long as you are saying what you can’t afford, you will never be able to afford it. If you must say anything, say “I don’t choose to use the money I have to buy that at this time.” This is a declaration that you indeed have money (and you do) and a statement that you are exercising your power of choice to spend it as you choose. That is a statement of your power, not your weakness.

A sad story.

I was parking my car at a mall recently, when a family came along behind me on their way into the mall. The mother turned to her husband and three children and said, “Get one thing straight, we can’t afford anything in there and never will be able to, so there is no reason to even waste your time wanting anything!” Think of the damage that well-meaning mother caused herself, her husband and her children. Damage that they may never be able to break away from. I wanted to grab those little kids and say, “No, that’s not true, you can have anything here that you want, maybe not today, but there’s no reason you can’t have it all someday, and until then it’s great to spend your time wanting it!”

Pick out a few of your quotes (or other people’s) to lift out and highlight in what I call mini-posters. Just take the font size up a bit and put a box around

them. These can take up any where from a quarter to a half page. You can also get very creative about the way you do it. Here are some

Now write about fifteen hundred words.

This will give you about five or six pages for the text of your chapter. By the time you have your quotations, and have created

four or five mini-posters and written fifteen hundred words, you will have a

good sized chapter AND it will be visually appealing.

Repeat this process for each chapter. Remember that regardless of what side of the page your chapter ends on, the next chapter will begin on a right hand page.

Try to write at least 12 fifteen hundred word chapters. This will give you 18,000

words of text.

Suggested Reading List

Begin this on a right hand page. Say Suggested

Reading List on a page of its very own just like you

would a chapter title. Leave the following page blank.

Begin the list itself on the next right hand page.

Make a list of books that are similar to yours that would benefit your reader. This is a real service to your reader that they will appreciate. Find a

bibliography style that is easy both for you and the

reader.

Don’t panic! 18,000 words is only two hours of spoken material. Every speaker has at last two hours of material, so write it down, or tape it and have someone transcribe it! Then clean it up so it reads well.

speaker. (They might want to hire you!) Give a brief explanation of

what you do. No big commercials.
