Clean up

The column and other unpainted parts of theModel G3183 are coated with a waxy oil that pro-tects them from corrosion during shipment.Remove the protective coating with mineral spir-its and paper towels. Do not use gasoline or otherpetroleum based solvents because of theirextremely low flash points. Do not use chlorine-based solvents – if you happen to splash someonto a painted surface, you’ll ruin the finish.

WARNING!

Follow the safety rules listed below whenworking with solvents:

1. Read and follow all directions and warningson the solvent label.

2. Work only in a well ventilated area.

3. Do not work near any type of open flame(e.g., pilot lights, kerosene heaters, and soon).

4. DO NOT smoke while working with flamma-ble material.

5. Paper towels from the cleaning process areextremely combustible. Dispose of wastetowels so they do not create a fire hazard.

Site Considerations

1. Mounting: We recommend mounting yourHollow Chisel Mortiser to a bench. This willprevent the machine from tipping over and toallow for maximum leverage when mortising.

2. Working Clearances: Consider existing andanticipated needs, size of material to beprocessed through each machine, andspace for auxiliary stands, work tables orother machinery when establishing a loca-tion for your Hollow Chisel Mortiser.

3. Lighting and Outlets: Lighting should bebright enough to eliminate shadow and pre-vent eye strain. Electrical circuits should bededicated or large enough to handle amper-age requirements. Outlets should be locatednear each machine so power or extensioncords are clear of high-traffic areas. Observelocal electrical codes for proper installationof new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

Page 8: HOLLOW CHISEL MORTISER - Grizzly

Circuit Requirements

The motor supplied with the Model G3183 is a110V single-voltage motor, prewired for 110V.Under normal use, the motor draws approximate-ly 6 amps @ 110V. We recommend using a 15amp circuit breaker or a 15 amp slow blow fusefor 110V operation. This should be satisfactoryfor normal use, while preventing motor damagefrom high heat caused by overload. If frequentcircuit failures occur when using the HollowChisel Mortiser, contact our service departmentor your local electrical contractor. The HollowChisel Mortiser cannot be wired for 220V opera-tion.

This equipment must be grounded. Pleaseensure that the Hollow Chisel Mortiser is continu-ously grounded from the motor to the machineframe and then to a known ground. Verify thatany existing electrical outlet and circuit you intendto plug into is actually grounded. If it is not, it willbe necessary to run a separate 12 A.W.G. coppergrounding wire from the outlet to a known ground.Under no circumstances should the groundingpin from any three-pronged plug be removed.

Extension Cords: If used, extension cords mustbe rated Hard Service (grade S) or better.Conductor size must be 14 A.W.G. for cords up to50 feet in length. Your extension cord must alsocontain a ground wire and plug pin. Always repairor replace extension cords if they become dam-aged.

CAUTION: Be sure that your particular electricalconfiguration complies with local and state codes. The best way to ensure compliance is to checkwith your local municipality or licensed electri-cian.

Hold Down

The hold down is designed to prevent the work-piece from lifting when the chisel is retracted. Thehold down should be adjusted so it just comes incontact with the workpiece – allowing it to moveside-to-side, but not up and down. To adjust thehold down, loosen the setscrew at the verticalpost, move the hold down to the desired heightand tighten the setscrew. The hold down can beflipped upside down to accommodate largerstock. Figure 13.

NOTE: Ensure that the hold down is centered soits fingers do not interfere with chisel movement. The vertical post is flattened on one side. Positionthe hold down so the setscrew meets the flat sur-face.

Figure 13.

Depth Stop

The depth stop rod allows you to control thedepth of your mortise cuts by limiting the distancethe head can be lowered. To set the desired mor-tising depth, lower the head until it is a proper dis-tance from the table. Loosen the setscrew on theleft side of the head and drop the depth stop roduntil it touches the base.Tighten the setscrew.Figure 14.

SECTION 4: OPERATIONS

Safety Rules • Before machine inspection, maintenance orchanging accessories: Turn off switch, unplugpower cord and wait for all moving parts tostop.

• Keep hands away from the chisel and bitwhile this tool is being operated.

• Always have the chisel opening facing awayfrom the operator or the fence.

• The bit should reach full speed before begin-ning a cut.

• Always feed chisel evenly and smoothly.

• Do not touch the chisel during the mortisingoperation.

• Never leave the mortiser running unattended.

This sums up our review of safety guidelines.Remember that every shop has its own specifichazards. Be sure, above all else, to use goodcommon sense and reasonable caution eachtime you start this Hollow Chisel Mortiser, or anywoodworking machinery. Proper safety stan-dards rarely take any more time or energy whenfollowed religiously. Develop a habit of safety.

Earlier in this manual we covered general shopand machine safety rules. This section willaddress safety rules specific to your mortiser.

• Be sure to observe all electrical requirementssuch as fuse sizing, wire sizing, machinegrounding and any other electrical considera-tion.

• Always wear eye protection while operatingthis mortiser. Also use a respirator to avoidbreathing dust. All safety equipment must beANSI approved.

• Always be aware of the condition of the woodyou are mortising. Pay particular attention toknots, splits, and other potentially dangerousareas.

• Never attempt to operate the mortiser withbits or chisels that are dull or damaged. Theywill burn the wood and cause it to bind.

• Maintain the mortiser in proper working condi-tion. Perform machine inspections and main-tenance services promptly when called for.

• Always put adjustment tools away after use.

Page 18: HOLLOW CHISEL MORTISER - Grizzly

-16- G3183 Hollow Chisel Mortiser

Once the assembly is complete and the adjust-ments are done to your satisfaction, you areready to test the machine.

Turn on the power supply at the main panel.Press the START button. Make sure that your fin-ger is poised on the STOP button, just in casethere’s a problem. The Hollow Chisel Mortisershould run smoothly, with little or no vibration orrubbing noises. Strange or unnatural noisesshould be investigated and corrected beforeoperating the machine further.

WARNING: DO NOT attempt to investigate oradjust the machine while it is running. Wait untilthe machine is turned off, unplugged and allworking parts have come to a rest before you doanything!

If noises occur that cannot be found by visualinspection, feel free to contact our service depart-ment for help.

Test Run

1. Place the workpiece on the table and adjustso chisel is aligned correctly for desiredmortise cut.

2. Secure the fence so the workpiece is firmlysupported.

3. Position the hold down as described earlier,so upward movement of the workpiece iseliminated.

4. Turn power on.

5. Lower the head by pulling the handle bardown with your right hand, while supportingthe workpiece with your left hand. NOTE:Be extremely careful to avoid the chisel withyour left hand. It is very sharp, and frictionwill make it hot enough to cause burns toyour skin. Figure 17.

Mortising

Figure 17.

Page 19: HOLLOW CHISEL MORTISER - Grizzly

Figure 18.

1 23 45 6

6. The chisel and bit will cause some smokingas it contacts the workpiece. This is causedby friction heating resins in the wood. Thisdoes not necessarily mean that the chisel isdull. More likely, a dull chisel will cause thehead to be difficult to lower.

7. An even pressure on the handle bar will pro-vide the best mortising results. The rate ofpenetration should be fast enough to avoidburning the tip of the bit, but slow enough toavoid stalling the motor.

8. Placing a piece of wood between your work-piece and the mortiser’s table when through-cutting will minimize tear-out.

9. When mortising thin stock, build up theheight of the workpiece enough for it to clearthe fence, so the hold down will function cor-rectly.

10. When making rectangular mortises, we rec-ommend you follow the sequence of cutsshown in Figure 18.

Page 20: HOLLOW CHISEL MORTISER - Grizzly

SECTION 5: MAINTENANCE

Lubrication

The Model G3183 Hollow Chisel Mortiserrequires a minimum of maintenance. The opera-tor should clear the machine of wood chips afterevery use and periodically wipe the machine ofdust and grime. All of the bearings within themachine are lubricated and sealed at the factory,so lubrication by the operator is unnecessary. Aperiodic application of light oil on the rack-and-pinion gearing will insure smooth operationbetween the head and column.

Make a habit of inspecting your Hollow ChiselMortiser each time you use it. Check for the fol-lowing conditions and repair or replace when nec-essary.

1. Loose mounting bolts.

2. Worn switch.

3. Worn or damaged cords and plugs.

4. Any other condition that could hamper thesafe operation of this machine.
