Good Afternoon to you,

Attached is my BIB BREAKDOWN that you requested!!

Please keep in mind that this a merely a tool that will help sailors like us 1) pinpoint our problem areas, 2)give a best guess estimate on what our upcoming exam will look like.At first glance the breakdown looks confusing but it isn't I have merely labeled each topic either (A,B,C,D,E)and I labeled each BIB to its corresponding topic. After that I added the numbers up and formulated a "best guess" on what the biggest sections of eachupcoming exam will likely be.

KEEP IN MIND!!! Without actually looking at an exam prior to test day IT'S IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to create a BIB BREAKDOWN with 100% accuracy.

My BIB BREAKDOWNS along with my STUDY METHOD has been very successful in helping sailors around the world advance to the next pay grade. However, I do not promise miracles!! So, if you are serious about advancing and are tired of not being able to score well in the same subjects these tools made be the ones for you!

This is my work email so please use it (I check it multiple times daily) so if you have any questions PLEASE LET ME KNOW so I can help. You can also reach me through facebook. I am all about helping sailors succeed and I am hoping this is successful for you!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!

V/r,

HM2 WANZO

This optional study method was created by: HM2 Nefretiri Wanzo.

**** To help you better understand the way I learned to study for advancement I will be using researched information from a combination of accredited sources to further breakdown the typical roadblocks we all face when learning and retaining any information. Also by bringing to light tested techniques that, when practiced correctly, can improve our retention efforts as well as our ultimate performance on test, exams, etc. ****

Now, let’s begin.

Learning Pyramid

Keep in mind there is however, controversy over the actual percentages of this pyramid. The National Training Laboratories (NTL) of Behavioral Studies was among the first to introduce this theory back in the 1960’s. Although the NTL stills holds these findings to be true, over time however, the origin of these findings can no longer be verified.

Now, despite what other research suggest the general consensus is that the average person learns and retains information more by practicing it as well as teaching the same information to others.

Now with this information in mind, this is how I prepared for advancement:

To summarize the numbers (which sometimes get cited differently) learners retain approximately:

90% of what they learn when they teach someone else/use immediately.

75% of what they learn when they practice what they learned.

50% of what they learn when engaged in a group discussion.

30% of what they learn when they see a demonstration.

20% of what they learn from audiovisual.

10% of what they learn when they’ve learned from reading.

5% of what they learn when they’ve learned from lecture

This optional study method was created by: HM2 Nefretiri Wanzo.

STEP 1: Take your most recent profile sheet and review it. What did you score less than 50% in??

- Once you have identified it, make a note off to the side. (THESE WILL BE THE ONLY SECTIONS THAT WILL REQUIRE YOUR MOST ATTENTION.)

- Everything else you clearly know, therefore you do not need to relearn these items.

STEP 2: BREAK DOWN YOUR BIBS!!!

- Using your topic/subtopics, categorize and break down your BIBS. (doing so will allow you to see what MOST of your upcoming advancement questions will stem from)

● IF YOU ARE UNABLE OR UNSURE ON HOW TO BREAK DOWN YOUR BIBS CORRECTLY I WILL PROVIDE A SCANNED COPY OF THE BIBS BROKEN DOWN FOR RANKS (HM3/HM2/HM1) UPON REQUEST.

Now at this point, you know exactly what YOU need to improve on (using the results from your last profile sheet). As well as a ballpark idea of where MOST of the questions will come from on your upcoming exam (using your broken down bib).

For the next remaining steps you will need the following items:

● Access to the instructions on your bibs (hard copy/pdf) ● Corpsman Manual   ● 1 notebook ● Flashcards (optional)

STEP 3: Taking the instructions one by one (starting with the smaller ones first) and begin taking notes in your notebook.

- At the top of the page write the instruction only. EX: OPNAVINST 6100.3, (DO NOT WRITE THE ACTUAL NAME OF THE INSTRUCTION) this will force your brain to memorize the instruction, or in some cases, help you narrow down what ISN’T the correct instruction on an exam. (The point is to better your odds of getting the correct answer!)

- Using your instruction as the reference skim the document (remember: NOT EVERY LINE IS IMPORTANT!!!) and take shorthand notes on what YOU UNDERSTAND. The FACTS. Here is an example below

***This same process can be applied when using the Corpsman Manual just replace the instruction reference at top with the chapter number from the book.***

EXAMPLE: (copied from OPNAVINST 6100.3) 2. Backgrounda. DHAs are regularly scheduled DoD-mandated instruments used to screen servicemembers prior to deployment; to identify health concerns after deployment; and to facilitate appropriate care. The DHA process supports the DoD health protection strategy to deploy healthy, fit, and medically-ready forces; minimize illnesses and injuries during deployments; and evaluate and treat physical and psychological problems (and deployment related health concerns) following deployment. The process is designed to identify stress injuries, and other health concerns, that require further assessment or treatment as appropriate. b. DHAs conducted at critical milestones in the deployment process are a key component in monitoring the health of our servicemembers. Servicemembers often rate their general health as worse 3 to 6 months after returning from deployment compared to their assessments completed within 30 days of redeployment.

YOU SHOULD BE ONLY TAKING NOTES ON THE FACTS: - Anything with numbers - Names and/or position/job titles - Anything that has steps - Anything that occurs at a specific time (annual, semiannual, quarterly, etc.)

Example of how your notes should generally look:

Title: OPNAVINST 6100.3.● DHAs are scheduled often. They are mandatory and are used to screen personnel before they

deploy. DHAs are also used to identify health concerns after a person returns from deployment;…so on and so forth

● The process is designed to identify stress injuries, and other health concerns…● DHAs conducted at critical milestones in the deployment process they are a key

component…● Service member rate their general health as worse about 3 to 6 month after returning from

deployment…

SEE HOW MUCH SHORTER AND SIMPLER IT BECOMES???

(NOTE: It’s important BEFORE you move on to the next step that you understand how important it is to write how you understand the information! So if that requires you to break things down like you are 2 years old then so be it!)

STEP 4: Once you have completed the document and obtained all the information you feel is important NOT ALL OF IT IS. (You will set that instruction aside and not look at it again)

YOU WILL ONLY REVIEW YOUR NOTES ON THE INSTRUCTION!

● At this point reviewing the instruction becomes both confusing and overwhelming. Remember to stick to your notes!!

STEP 5: REPEAT STEP 3 UNTIL you have gone through the whole bib. (Even with longer bibs like Dental, LAB, pharmacy etc. This process may take a little longer but it will still work!)

● For step 3 I do not recommend typing. This is due largely to the fact that people have a tendency to “Copy and Paste” information rather than focus on the ACTUAL material they are transporting.

● This method of gathering information has been VERY successful for me because it forced me to become acutely aware of HOW I was RECEIVING information. Writing things down will ultimately force the reader to address where the communicational breakdown is. Writing or (doing) has also been linked to longer memory retention!

STEP 6: Teaching/Talking Out the Information (MOST IMPORTANT STEP!!!)

- Once you have completed the entire bib or even between the sections you have completed TALK ABOUT IT!!! (Boring I know, but discuss it!!)

DO NOT USE YOUR NOTES! DO IT FROM MEMORY!!

● This process will help you convert these “short term” memories into “long term” memories.● People will more often forget what they see faster than what they say out loud.

NOTE: When you discuss topics use people like associates, spouses, kids or self. (NOT FRIENDS)

● ASSOCIATES: People you kind of know but they won’t easily distract you like a friend would. Pick someone who is just as motivated in advancing as you are.

● SPOUSES: Honestly, in most cases, they WANT to help. (Plus speaking with people who don’t have any idea of what you’re talking about will help you understand the information so you CAN break it down enough for someone else to understand.)

● KIDS/BABIES/PETS: They are good candidates when you need an audience! ● SELF: On the way home, on the way to work, or when you are alone review verbally what

you remember from that section. (The point is that you SAY what you understand OUT LOUD)

● FRIENDS: BECOME A DISTRACTION QUICKLY PERIOD!! (There will be plenty of time to chill later. This time is about YOUR career. Ask yourself what’s more important?)

(NOTE: Group studying is fine, but in small numbers. Larger groups can quickly bounce off topic. The point is we want to limit distractions!)

SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF THIS 6-STEP METHOD

1) YOU condense hundreds of pages of information! 2) YOU have broken down said information in a way that YOU understand it. 3) YOU will be able to regurgitate information clearly to anyone which will increase YOUR and

THEIR understanding. 4) YOU will boost your overall CONFIDENCE in retaining this information for your exam. 5) EVEN IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE “CORRECT” ANSWER THIS METHOD WILL HELP

YOU EASILY RULE OUT THE “WRONG” ONES 6) YOU WILL NOTICE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR EXAM SCORES!!!

**** THIS PROCESS WHILE IT MAY NOT WORK PERFECTLY FOR EVERYONE IS A METHOD THAT ANYONE CAN APPLY TO THEIR STUDY REGIMEN!!!****
