Principal’s Message

Dear Parents / Carers

It seems like only last week that the first edition of our Regis News went out - I

am sure you will agree that the year has gone very quickly again!

It was a real treat to meet our new intake on our transition day this week, all 300

positively about their positive attitudes and manners - well done to all of you!

We continue to engage in end of year tests and I want to congratulate our

students for their resilience, determination and positivity during the exam season,

especially in such hot weather. They have been a credit to themselves, to you

their parents and to their school!

showcase ‘The Best in Everyone’, ranging from our fantastic Awards Evening, our

Sixth Form Ball, Year 12 Futures Day, the Sussex School Games, Book Awards,

French Pen Pals, our work with the Brilliant Club and a visit to the Dementia

Hub.

I also remind you of the end of term arrangements and start of next term. Please

remember that school closes to all students on Tuesday 24th July at 12.15pm

with all students being required to leave the school site at this time.

With two weeks and two days to go, there are many events and activities to

come including our School Show next week, Tuesday - Thursday (get your

tickets now and be wowed by our talented students and live professional band!),

Sports Day next Thursday, and Memorable Moments days the following Thursday

and Friday.

Thank you again for supporting your school - we are so proud of all our students.

Awards Evening 2018

Last week we had our annual awards evening, with over 160 students receiving awards ranging from subject

certificates in all year groups, to the prestigious special cups awarded for a range of charity and community work

and academic excellence, among others.

The evening was a fantastic event, and a great opportunity to really celebrate the Best In Everyone. The Arena

sports hall was packed with a large audience, including the Mayor of Bognor Regis, staff and many parents who

celebrated as every student collected their award with well-deserved pride in what they have achieved.

During the evening we also saw excellent performances from the Signature Elite dance group, Sixth Form

musicians and Izzy Hauxwell who performed an outstanding display of skill on the trampoline.

Principal Mike Garlick says, ‘I was so proud to share in our Awards Evening, with over 160 students receiving

awards! With the awards ranging from subject certificates, to the prestigious special cups awarded for a range of

charity and community work and academic excellence, we were truly able to celebrate the Best In Everyone. It

was an amazing evening and the students genuinely are a credit to themselves, to their parents and to their school!’

Sixth Form Summer Ball

Sixth Form students attended their annual Sixth Form Ball on Friday 22nd June. This was held at the

Chichester Park Hotel. All students and the members of staff who attended had a really great evening.

They started the evening with a three course dinner, followed by a disco until midnight. This is always a

very popular end of term event and the perfect way to celebrate with our Year 13, as they come to the

end of their studies at TRS.

Locker Key Return

Just a reminder to all students that have a locker at school, that

it is time to remove all belongings and hand back in your locker

key and get your £5 locker key deposit back. This enables us to

give the lockers a good clean and service them over the summer

break.

If you do not hand your locker key back, unfortunately we will

have to cut the padlock off and you will lose your deposit. If you

have anything in the locker we will keep the contents for two

weeks after we return after the summer break, then after this

time the contents will be disposed of.

At the start of the new term on ‘Welcome Day’ students will be able to hire another locker for next year at

the same cost of £10 (which includes a £5 returnable deposit, on condition the key is returned to us before

the end of the summer term).

Please return your locker key to the Finance Office (room 134) at break & lunchtime on:

Monday 16th July, Tuesday 17th July & Wednesday 18th July 2018

Throughout the day the girls rotated positions well and were supportive and encouraging to not only our

team but to the other teams too. They demonstrated a tremendous team spirit which especially showed

in our 11-1 win against Thomas Bennett representing the Crawley section.

Overall we finished in 8th place so we are the 8th best Year 7 netball team in the county which is an

excellent effort from the girls.

They were also awarded the determination award which shows their commitment and resilience

throughout on what was a very hot day! A huge well done and best of luck in the league next year! I will

miss being your coach!

Sussex School Games

On a very hot

Wednesday 27th June,

the Year 7 girls Netball

team went to the Sussex

School Games at the K2

in Crawley to represent

the area – West Sussex

West.

They got through to this

stage by winning the

local league and the local

league tournament.

There were 9 schools in

total representing their

areas including some

independent school. The

standard of netball was

high but we managed to

keep some of the

stronger teams to low

scores in the game.

Brilliant Club Success!

Throughout the Summer term, 12 students from Year 8

and 9 have taken the opportunity to participate in the

Brilliant Club, which is a fantastic chance to develop

academic study skills and for finding out more about higher

education.

We attended a launch trip in April at Royal Holloway

University, where Regis School students met Eddie, our

PhD student-teacher, who is researching Neuroscience at

the University of Sussex.

Following the launch trip, Eddie came into school to teach

6 sessions about engineering. Our topic was 'Imaging the

human body', and Eddie shared some of his extensive

knowledge about how technology is used to support developments

in sport and medicine. These sessions included learning about how

the body can be scanned and monitored using 21st century

technology in medicine and sport. We also had a visit from Nick

Gibb MP and the opportunity to teach him about the Brilliant Club.

He was really interested in what all of the students had learnt from

Eddie and their aspirations for the future.

Following the taught sessions, all students finalised their own

research and engineering designs to complete a final assignment

which was to research and design equipment that could be used to

enhance performance in sport, using 21st century technology. These

assignments were up to 1500 words long, including design ideas,

and they had to be sent to Eddie by a very strict deadline so that he

could mark them (the deadline was so strict that marks were

deducted if you were even a minute late!) Eddie then came back

into school for a final feedback session and to give all of the

students their final, university-style grade. All students did really

well, especially Umanga Rayamajhi and Oliver Fry who both

achieved 1st class marks for their assignments.

At the graduation trip, there was plenty of opportunity for

reflection about the project and how students had overcome the

challenges of fitting in writing an additional essay on top of regular

lessons and examinations. Some of our students who have taken on

the project this year have really had to plan their work carefully to

fit it in around many other commitments, and they have all been

fantastic in doing so. Megan Bryant Lawson also took the chance to

present and share her own experiences to all of the schools at the

Graduation ceremony, articulately describing how she found the

process and what she has got out of completing the Brilliant Club.

Overall, the students have shown a lot of independence and

resilience in completing the project, and have certainly valued the

whole experience. Megan Year 8 has described this as an excellent

opportunity to research technology and medicine and to also learn

more about university life and the inspirational opportunities that

will be available for her to study in the future. We are very proud

of all that these students have achieved and look forward to seeing

them using the skills that they have developed in school next year

and beyond.

Book Awards! Book Awards! Book Awards!

Carnegie Book Awards

A group of students have been shadowing the Carnegie Book Awards, which involves reading the shortlisted

books, meeting weekly and eating lots of biscuits! The winning book was announced on Monday 18th June, and we

celebrated by having cake and voting for which book we wanted to win. We watched some of the ceremony

from London. Our group thought that ‘After the fire’ by Will Hill was the best title, followed by ‘The hate you

give’ by Angie Thomas.

The actual winning book (decided by the Carnegie panel) was Geraldine McCaughrean’s

‘Where the world ends’. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is beautifully written, and such an

interesting story. It is also based on a true story of survival which, for me, just added to the

magic.

Here are some reviews of the shortlisted books

The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas

Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised

and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when

Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police

officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed. Inspired by

the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl's

struggle for justice. (ww.amazon.co.uk)

Oliver Norgett says “The hate you give is a really good book that highlights important

social issues such as racism and even moments of segregation. All together mixed into an

amazing plot to make a great book that starts a conversation. I thought that the book just

kept me guessing as I kept reading. This is because it just continued really important

questions vital to the storyline. The book ended abruptly but this perfectly rounded the

books message and plot. I would recommend this book to a friend.”

Rook by Anthony McGowan

A poignant, beautifully written novella about growing up and family. A companion piece to the

hugely successful Brock and Pike, McGowan warms hearts once more with the adventures of

Nicky and Kenny. (www.amazon.co.uk)

Emily Howard says “In the book ‘Rook’, Kenny and Nicky find a Rook that has been

injured. They take it in. Nicky has been bullied for a while and one day he fights back. I

liked the book because it finished off nicely, where as some of the books in the Carnegie

Award didn’t have a proper finish. I don’t think it will win the medal though. I would

recommend this book because it’s a quick read and has a meaningful story. It makes you

think about how you treat other people.”

Finlay Clark says “Kenny and Nicky rescue an injured Rook and attempt to nurse it back

to health. Nicky doesn’t think it will make it though. At the school Nicky is bullied by his

crush’s brother…. awkward. He gets expelled and his life becomes very messed up.

Luckily his crush saves him and everything is OK. I quite liked this book even though it was written quite simply I

think that was OK. I feel like it should definitely have a sequel.”

After the fire by Will Hill

Father John controls everything inside The Fence. And Father John likes rules. Especially about never

talking to Outsiders. Because Father John knows the truth. He knows what is right, and what is wrong.

He knows what is coming.

Moonbeam is starting to doubt, though. She's starting to see the lies behind Father John's words. She

wants him to be found out.

What if the only way out of the darkness is to light a fire? (www.amazon.co.uk)

Adelicia Lavender says “Moonbeam lives at a religious cult until a fire burns down the

building. Then she speaks to a psychiatrist and an FBI agent to help them understand what she

went through. I loved the book because it is interesting finding out what happened there. I

like the way it was written but I think there should be more about before the fire. It should

definitely win the Carnegie Medal! I would recommend it because it is such a great story”

Sky Waller says “This story is about a girl named Moonbeam who was involved in a cult, they don’t like outsiders.

When a new leader joins people from inside leave. A fire happens and many lives are vanished. An FBI agent and

doctor try to get the most out of her to find the answers of what happened there. I think the book is amazing, very

heart to heart. I think it’s going to be first and win the award. I would recommend it.

Amazing Book Awards

On Friday 22nd June we took a minibus of students over to Shoreham

Academy for the Amazing Book Awards ceremony. We were treated

to some wonderful authors who talked about their books. Author

Holly Bourne was our host for the event, and we heard from D J

Fennell, Simon James Green (who was hilarious), and Penny Joelson

who won the award with her book ‘I have no secrets’. Our students

were very pleased with the results, as Penny’s book was one of their

favourites. Lots of our students also waited at the end to buy books

and get them signed.

Visit https://amazingbookawards.co.uk/ for more information and photos from the

evening.

secondary school in Loire-Atlantique (44 FRANCE). We exchanged our

first letters at Christmas and we sent them new ones at Easter. We

wanted to send a third series before the summer but we did not get a

chance to do that.

It was very beneficial for the students to be able to describe themselves

and families in French to their pen pals. They also wrote a detailed

description of their personality and/or their pets. Some talked about

their favourite teachers and favourite subjects all in French. I really

enjoyed seeing them very excited about creating their cards and letters

but the best was for them to read letters from their new friends.

I am proud of 7Pfr2 for having done this additional work. It allowed

them to realise they were able to communicate in the target language

and all of them were really enthused by this exchange. Bravo 7Pfr2!

On Thursday 28th June, all Year 12 students took part in a Futures Day. This day is

dedicated to helping our students make informed choices about their next steps.

Students worked in small groups and visited a variety of guest speakers from

Sussex University, Chichester University and Chichester College. In these sessions

they learnt about degree and higher level apprenticeships and University courses.

They also received input on how to write their personal statements, something

that many of them will be starting over the next few months. Our Year 12 students

also completed their registrations for UCAS and UniFrog, two platforms which will

support them in their next steps.

Dates for Your Diary

Locker Key Return

Just a reminder to all students that have a locker at school, that it is time to

remove all belongings and hand back in your locker key and get your £5 locker

key deposit back. This enables us to give the lockers a good clean and service

them over the summer break.

If you do not hand your locker key back, unfortunately we will have to cut the padlock off and you will lose

your deposit. If you have anything in the locker we will keep the contents for two weeks after we return

after the summer break, then after this time the contents will be disposed of.
