Welcome to the following children who are new to Henley School; Emily Dang (Rm 5), Ryan McGlinchey (Rm 18), Riley Blackler (Rm
6), Alexia Stewart (Rm 6), Izaak Adams (Rm 12),Olly Davies (Rm 6) and Sapphire Matthewson (Rm 6).
This is our first newsletter in the new season of Spring, Summer is not far away.
Each week our Chess Club meet for games and learning new strategies to use in their games.
Recently they went to a competition at Nayland College and competed against other schools.
They did extremely well with one of our teams getting 2nd overall.
Our children also took part in the Winter Sport Tournament. Young people in Year Five and Six
came to Henley and participated in rugby, soccer, netball and boccia. It was great to see our
grounds being used in such a constructive way allowing our children to interact both socially and
competitively. We were impressed with the pride and skill shown by all. A very big thank you to Cade and Megan for organising such a
special event.
Last week Henley choir took part in the Tuesday performance of “Rock Da House”. These children have been practising for months
and this was clearly shown by the very high musical standard achieved in this performance. It was all about setting a higher standard
to achieve and that singing and being part of a choir can be really fun. Thank you John Philips and Sabine for all the hours put in to get
the performance to such a high standard.
Recently I read an article in the New Zealand Listener titled “Under pressure, kids, schools and stress”. It talked about why the stakes
are getting higher and how parents can lessen the load. Some of the key points from this article were, “How can I help my child reach
the potential they have got?” The key words here being “the potential they have”, not trying to make a child something they are not.
“Supporting the school” was another. This allows the child to see school as being a valued place. Allowing children “to have a
balance”. This means allowing children to have time playing with their friends and doing things that children do. The last thing that
the article talked about was “spending quality time with children – that’s face to face with phones, televisions and computers
switched off.” This I believe is so important no matter what the age of the young person. All our young people want is for us to take
an interest in them and care. Being a parent of a child today has far more pressures than there has ever been so anything that helps
us to move forward positively is worth considering.
Just remember as you go about your work this week, “If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours.”
Eric Gardner, Acting Principal

Being Palaeontologists … “

Sahara Desert
On Friday the sandpit became the Sahara Desert and Room 13 went to investigate as palaeontologists.
We had to be patient. It wasn’t easy for palaeontologists when they found fossils. Fossils are old bones and rocks.
Some were 50 million years old.
James and Georgia placed the fossils the same way we would dig them up if we were digging for dinosaur bones. I
had to brush the sand off the fossil I found so I wouldn’t damage it before I picked it up. By Cameron Hooper

MEMO FROM THE HENLEY SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Recently our Principal, John Armstrong, announced he is standing for a position on the Nelson City
Council. John has discussed this with the Henley School Board of Trustees and has expressed his
ongoing commitment to Henley School.
We wish to reassure parents and staff that should John be successful, the Board, John and the senior
management team are committed to ensuring that Henley School continues to operate to the high
standards that John has established since becoming principal.
In the meantime the Board would like to wish John all the best for his sabbatical to China and we look
forward to his return in Term 4.
For and on behalf of
The Board of Trustees
Henley School
Room 13 would like to thank James Brewer and Georgia Barber from Post Impressions, in Brightwater, who donated fossils and crystals as well as their time and expertise.

the spirit of dressing in yellow for it.
Future Ferns Development Squad
Last week I got to play in the curtain raiser for the Premier Netball final at Nelson
College for Girls. Sixteen Girls were chosen from different schools in Nelson. We’ve
been practising twice a week at Saxton courts. Our coach Trish taught us lots of
new drills and skills. It was exciting on the night when our names were called out
and we got to run onto the court while everyone clapped. The game was hard as
the floor was slippery and there’s lots of different court markings on it which was a
bit confusing. I was in the pink team and we lost 20-10 to the green team. The
whole experience has been lots of fun. Taylor Suckling

Alex Charles runners up. Congratulations!
Tahunanui Rocks- Alex Honey, 9 years old
I’ve discovered a precious place, the
Tahunanui Rocks. Scrambling along hard
boiled rocks, crabs scatter for rocky covers.
The blazing sun shoots down and hits the
sparkly shells. Starfish hanging on tight to
the prickly boulders.
Mussels try to ignore the dangerously black
and white seagulls.
Penguins quietly cheeping away to their
salty friends.
Staring across the salty sea to Haulashire
Island and the Boulder Bank walk beyond.
Nelson –Alex Charles 11 years
Casting my line into the clear blue water.
I hook me a spotty, he puts up a fight.
Finally I get him into my sight.
I pull him up and out of the sea, then he
goes and hits my knee. There’s huge
ships and a very good view, above
there’s a few. There’s a small tugboat
and a huge fueltank. On top there’s a
coat, oh wait that’s a man. This is Port
Nelson, a great place to be and there’s
some yummy fish & chips for tea.
My Mums Antique Shop- Kathryn Martin 10 years
Cling Clang! The gates are opening.
Everyone come on in!
As you walk in there is just silence every-where,
all you can hear are the birds twittering outside
by all the gardening tools. When you walk down
the long red carpet and turn to your side you can
see beautiful dolls all shapes, sizes and ages lying
down in ancient baby prams.
In the other room are massive book shelves
packed full with books and old fashioned pic-
tures of people who might be your relatives.
There is another book shelf that has not only
regular sized books but also tiny miniature books
too. On the top of the smaller book shelf there’s
old army hats and many others of all size, shape
and description. By the cash register locked
away in the cabinet is very beautiful jewellery
like brooches, rings and bracelets. There’s not
only all of that because there’s also fashion and
very very fragile china. Every day, every month,
every year I LOVE coming here after school.
