Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to the following children who have recently started at Henley School; Sophie Young (Richmond
Room), Mailis Calvert (Rm 21), Leo Calvert (Rm 13), Arnikha-Trace Harris (Rm 20) and
Bellakween King-Harris (Rm 13).
Well done to the following children who represented Henley School at the Nelson
Primary Schools Gymnastics festival held recently at Nelson Intermediate Mosey
Grayson Memorial Gym. This event was held over two days and we had 23 children
representing us. Congratulations to Millie Brooker who won the competitive girls
category; Georgia Shone 2nd overall in the Level 2 girls and Maddie Seymour 3rd
overall in the Level 3 girls. Two of our Level 1 students, Ayva Turner and Lara
Fenemor score a ‘perfect 10’ in their bar routine. Huge thanks to our volunteer
coach, Lee-Anne Manson (former Henley parent) who gave up her time to train the
children and be there on the competition days. Thanks also to Teacher in Charge
Sabine Reinert and other staff who supported the programme as well as parents
who provided transport on the day.
Congratulations also to our Henley Party Jammers who have now been crowned the National Jump Jam champions in their
category (advanced Year 4-6) with the highest points awarded.
Rooms 5 and 6 have now relocated to refurbished classrooms 7 and 8 and are enjoying their new space. Our building
project now sees Rooms 5 and 6 being upgraded for the 2020 school year and the completion of the new toilets at the end
of Room 7. We are hoping to have these ready for the start of 2020.
Last week’s Athletics Day was a great success. As you will appreciate, it is a major logistical exercise to organise all the
students into the various events and make sure that it runs smoothly. Thanks to Cade Armstrong (Teacher in Charge of
Sport) and Jan Lynch (Sports Co-ordinator) who coordinated the day with support from everyone on the school staff – a
team effort. The grounds were prepared well by Tony Satherley, our caretaker. Thanks to the Friends of Henley School
who organised the sausage sizzle, cake stall and coffee cart among other things. Thanks to all the parents who supported
the event and provided baking for the cake stall – much appreciated.
Finally, as in previous years, we have a Christmas tree set up in the foyer. The tree
was expertly set up by Bailey, Anika and Juliet under the direction of Marjolein from
our Office. We invite you to bring in a donated gift to place under the tree. This
year we are again supporting The Fifeshire Foundation’s ‘Big Give’. The Foundation
wants to make a difference to the many families facing hardship in the Nelson /
Tasman region this Christmas and are asking for
unwrapped gifts. Suggestions are books, vouchers,
family board games, sporting equipment, toys and
Christmas treats. Further information is available at

ROAD PATROL
NEWS
It is time to give a
Big Shout Out to
this year's group of
Road Patrollers.
They have been on duty,
rain, hail or shine to keep
our children safe at the
Gilbert Street and William Street entrances. This is
a commitment for one day a week, two terms of the
year.
Thank you, team, we appreciate you.
This week the first group of Year 5 children are
being trained for next year.
If you think your Year 5 would like to be a Road
Patroller for next year, I have the forms in Room 8.
Thank you all for being responsible drivers and
parking sensibly around our school entrances,
helping to keep our students safe.
Pauline Miller
Road Patrol co-ordinator
Peer Patrollers 2019
Thank you very much to this group of children who have been productive
Peer Mediators for Henley School during 2019.
This year the staff entered a competition to change the name of the Peer
Mediators and now they are recognised as Peer Patrollers.
We purchased new jackets, lanyards with the process attached and we
gave the children the opportunity to purchase a badge so that they could
be identified in the playground on and off duty.
They have been dealing maturely and sensibly with the problems they’ve
had to mediate. Teachers often overhear the positive way in which the
Peer Patrollers deal with the conflict and how calm and approachable they
are.
Last week we rewarded the children who were active in the playground
with a Pizza Party and I look forward to working alongside a new group for
2020.
Congratulations for committing to the responsibility for a term and a half.
Thank you, Amy Chippendale (Peer Patrol Co-ordinator)

Caring For Our Environment
Miss Kyle is sad because most of the plants are in plastic pots. Miss Kyle does not like plastic pots. I am going to
Pics Peanut Butter Factory because I am going to see how they work together. When we get back to school, we will
put a plant in a pot that is not plastic. We will work as a team. On that day we will have another teacher. It will be
fun. Erika (Room 3)
Apples and banana skins can go in the compost so the worms can make the compost into soil, plastic does not go into
the ground and be part of it. Pumpkins and every fruit and every vegetable can go in the ground. Plastic bottles do
not go under the ground and be part of the ground. We need to not use plastic much. If plastic goes in the sea it
can make the fish get all sick. That is not good. Food scraps are much much better than plastic. We do not like
plastic. Plastic is not good for the earth. Erika (Room 3)
Miss Kyle was sad about plants in non-biodegradable plastic pots. Concrete can’t rot away so it’s called non-
biodegradable. Wood can rot away so it is called biodegradable. Bricks can’t rot away so they’re called non-
biodegradable. Metal cannot rot away so it’s called non -biodegradable. Meat can rot away so it is called
biodegradable. A leaf can rot away so it is called biodegradable. A bone can’t rot away so it is called non-
biodegradable. Glass can’t rot away so it’s called non-biodegradable. Max (Room 3)
