Ofallthebaddiethabitsembracedbyteens, thereplacementof water and milk with soda is probably one of the mostcommonproblemsand, unfortunately, thisbadchoiceaffectsnotonlytheirweightbutthedevelopmentandstrengthoftheirbonesaswell.

According to recent studies, the increased intake of soda, although not directly affecting the body’s calcium levels,makesbonesmorepronetodevelopingosteoporosislaterinlife.Researchisstillneededtosupportorconfirmthecause-effectrelationshipbetweensodaintakeandthealteredbonedensity,occurringmainlyingirlsintheir20s,butwhatalreadyhasbeenprovenbytwodifferentstudiesisthatadietrichinsodaandcarbonateddrinksmakesapersonuptofourtimesmorelikelytosufferabonefracture.

Thehigherthebonedensity, the lowertheriskoffracture, soanincreasedriskofbonefracturemeansalowerdensityofbonemass, whichisthecharacteristicofosteoporosis.Inhealthypeople, thehighestmassdensityandbonestrengthis reached around the age of 20, so building bonemineraldensity (BMD) during teenage years and early adulthoodis the first condition for maintaining a healthy locomotorsystemandpreventingosteoporosis.

Therecommendeddailydoseofcalcium,accordingtotheNationalAcademyofSciences,isasfollows:

•500milligrams(mg)ofcalciumforkidsaged2-3years,

•800mgforchildrenaged4-8years,

•1,300mgofcalciumforkidsandteensaged9-18years.

Butifsodaintakedoesnotaffectthebones’calciumlevel,howisitpossibleforthesebeveragestoberesponsiblefortheonsetofosteoporosissymptoms?

POTENTIAL LINK BETWEEN SODA INTAKE AND OSTEOPOROSIS

Scientistsdon’thaveaclearanswerforthisatthemomentbutapossibleexplanationfortheadverseeffectssoftdrinkshave on bone health could come from the high levels of

phosphorusinthesebeverages.Accordingtolaboratorystudies, the phosphoric acid found in soda couldstimulate the breakdown of bones when in toohighamounts.

Anotherexplanationcouldbethatmanyteenscompletely replace the intake of milk withsoda,meaningthattheyreplaceacalcium-richbeverage with a calcium-free and potentiallybone-destroying one. As a consequence, even

if soda had no negative impact on bones, thisreplacement would still favor the occurrence of

osteoporosis by preventing the delivery of sufficientamounts of calcium to bones. This fact is confirmed bystatistical data showing that kids and teens who drinksodausually have very lowamountsofmilkor avoidmilkcompletely.

However, there are also some researchers sustaining theopposite:astudypublishedintheJournaloftheAmericanCollege of Nutrition found that kids who drank non-dairybeveragesandsoftdrinkshadhighertotalcalciumintakesthan those who didn’t and concluded that one does notnecessarily eliminate milk from the diet when drinkingseveralglassesofsodaperday.Still, thisisn’texactlythebestargumentorapproachasitdoesnotanalyzethepotentiallinkbetweensodaintakeandcalciumlevelsorosteoporosis, rather theeffectsof a “regular”diet compared to amilk-rich/soda-freedietonone’soverallcalciumintake.

We’ll therefore conclude by saying that there are morestudiesandevidenceprovingthatyoungadults, teensandkids–especiallygirls–drinkinghigheramountsofsodaaremorelikelytodeveloposteoporosisandaremorepronetobone fractures due to an altered bonemass density. Ouradvice, therefore, is to encourage your kids and teens toconsumethedailydoseofcalciumthat’srecommendedfortheirageandtopracticeweight-bearingactivities,suchasrope jumping, running, football, tennis or gymnastics, tohelpbuildstrongerbones.

We are in the midst of an era where school choice is there for the taking and what each school has to offer is unique. The blend of its faculty, extracurricular activities, college-level course offerings and leadership, not to mention its overall atmosphere and goals, distinguish one school from another. Taking all of this, and more, into consideration is especially important when deciding which school is best for your child.

To learn more about Lora the Study Coach. visit http://lorathestudycoach.com

Not Everyone Attends the Neighborhood School

Oneof themost importantaspects to research is theschool’sexpectations.Theschoolshouldbedemandingenough tochallengeyourchildbutnot sodemandingthat ittakesthefunoutof learning.Traditionalpublicschools provide a superb education, but if your childhas special interestsor theneighborhoodschool isn’tchallengingenough,it’slikelythatacharterorprivateschoolwouldbemoreappropriateandprovideamorepersonalizedexperience.

It is also important that social standards are high.Children of all ages need to be taught how to treatothers, resolve conflict, show respect, be a goodwinner and continue on when they don’t succeed atfirst.Teachersplayabigroleinsocialeducationsimplybecause students often spend more time with theirteachers thanwith theirparents, so it’sessential thatsocialskillsarepartoftheirday.

As it is important that children learn to respectauthority, it’s just as critical that they learn to beindependent.Whenchildrenarelefttoworkonaprojectindependently, it helps them develop critical thinkingskills, and when the task is completed, it provides asenseofprideandanI-can-do-itattitude,leavingthemwanting to domore. Having the independence to becreativeandmakemistakes,whenappropriate,allowsstudentstothinkforthemselvesanddevelopproblem-solvingabilities.

Lastbutnotleastistheschool’satmosphere.Itshouldhaveanoverallfeelofencouragementandsupportwithhigh expectations that your child canmeet.Althoughwewant our children to learn discipline and respect,it doesn’t mean that the school must be unfriendly.Remember,ifyouwouldn’twanttospendalldaythere,yourchildwouldn’teither.

Every school is unique andwhat is right forone childmaynotberightforanother.So,evenifyourbestfriendenrollsherchildinoneschool,youstillneedtodoyourresearchsothatyoucanchoosetheschoolthatisrightforyourchild.

If you’re a woman, you most likely have a personal relationship with hormonal imbalance. We have been taught that this imbalance is just something that women have to endure but that’s not necessarily so. There are ways to mitigate the chaos.

WOMEN A G I N G

Throughout life women experience different stages – childhood, teenhood, adulthoodandmaturity.Justas thereproductivestagecomes along, years later so does the non-reproductive. As thephaseofreproductionnearsanend, adecreaseofovaryandotherglandular functions cause menstrual cycles to become irregularandeventually cause the cessationofmenses.During this normalstage of life, only 10% ofwomen experience severe symptoms ofmenopause; however, the symptoms can be so severe that theyneedattentionforawomantoregainthebalanceinherlife.

Menopausesyndromeisgenerallypresentinwomenover50yearsold;however, itcanbepresent inyoungerwomenduetosurgicalprocedures or other circumstances. When menopause is in fullswing, women experience symptoms such as hot flashes, suddensweating, sweatypalms, irritability, anger, suddencrying, insomnia, night sweats, heart palpitations, anxiety, restlessness and dream-disturbed sleep. The difficultly in dealing with these symptomsmakeswomenfeelfrustratedandevendepressed.

The fundamentals of OrientalMedicine explain that while on thepath of aging, women are sometimes overextended, and, nottaking our bodies into consideration, we exhaust ourselves. This, alongwith heavy blood loss frommenses, accidents or surgeries, causes symptomsofmenopause.OrientalMedicineofferswomena more natural approach to easing menopausal symptoms byusing nutritional guidance, herbal formulas, acupuncture andother techniques.
