Do We Really NeedSupplements In Our Diet?*There are twenty-four essential vitamins and

minerals you need in order to meet minimum RDI

(Recommended Dietary Intake) requirements. *This

requires nine servings of fruits and vegetables a

day, and yet only one third of Americans eat five

servings daily. With the declining nutrient drain in

American produce, daily supplementation is without

a doubt, a necessity. What we need to live long,

healthy and energetic lives rests right under our

feet. Life is truly amazing when we take the time

to appreciate it. We were all born on this planet

for a reason. The ground we walk on is perpetually

replenishing our life force for as long we choose

to utilize it. The right natural combinations are an

essential part of our personal growth, wealth and

livelihood.

AMERICANS GUILTY OF POOR DIETINGThe facts are, the average American doesn’t meet

daily RDI’s (Recommended Dietary Intake) period.

But don’t take our word for it, there’s a plethora of

information out there. Take a half hour out of your

busy schedule to do some of your own research.

You may be shocked at what you find. For example,

just about all produce is picked before it’s ripened

in order to preserve a fresh presentable look. That’s

all fine and good, but when produce is forced to

ripen on the shelf, essential nutrients are never de-

veloped. Combine this with farm soils not having the

proper amount of time between crops to replenish

its natural minerals and nutrients, and you’ve got

major reason for concern. *Even if we all decided

right now to commit to nine servings of produce a

day, it’s no secret that RDI’s are still not considered

optimum nutrient intake for maximum health. The

good news is that it’s an easy fix. High quality and

natural nutrients are readily available in your area to

adequately supplement our daily requirements.

Supplements are not a cure-all. It’s an all-inclusive thing so if you don’t eat right and exercise, supplements are

not a replacement.

With the declining nutrient

drain in American produce,

daily supplementation is

without a doubt, a necessity.

BUY FOR QUALITY OVER QUANTITYHow do we know what supplements to buy? It’s

important to use high quality natural (not synthetic)

supplements in order to create precise synergy. The

cooperative action between certain vitamins and

minerals, to create a stronger vitamin function, is the

act of synergy. One may not work without the other. To

ensure proper synergy, the correct supplements should

be scientifically formulated, certified, and from a repu-

table source. Quality supplements will have contact

information on the packaging as well as a source of

reliable background information. One of the questions

you may want to ask the manufacturer is do they

have a COA (Certificate of Analysis) on file, confirming

the potency of their ingredients? They should utilize

pharmaceutical blending and only the highest quality

of excipients. Excipients are the binding agents used

to hold together the vitamin tablet. Examples of ex-

cipients include monoglycerides, magnesium stearate,

modified food starch, etc. Some vitamin companies

even use silica — or what people usually refer to as

“sand”— as an excipient. Lower priced supplements

can mean lower quality, with higher levels of these

types of cheap fillers and binding agents. Another

vital part of choosing the correct supplement is the

type of delivery system. Ensure that the supplements

in question have enteric coating. This is an important

and expensive process, which says a lot about how

much the manufacturer cares about the quality of

their product. Without enteric coating the nutrients will

most likely pass through your body without vital active

ingredients ever being released.

SUPPLEMENTS ARE ESSENTIALWe now know why supplements are so essential to our

livelihood, and how to choose the right products. But

with the market flooded with nutrient combinations of

all sorts, it’s important to understand the dynamics of

why. In the next few sections, we will not only get into

the specifics of what proper supplements can do, but

also why vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxi-

dants are the catalyst to achieving complete nutrition.

Basic Essentials for Healthy Aging | 3

As we get older, we can begin to see the visible signs of aging, but the most significant and harmful effects of aging are taking place in-ternally. Hormone levels decrease and our metabolism slows down, making us vulnerable to illness, disease and weight gain. Declining hormone levels aren’t the only factors that contribute to aging. Free radicals and oxidative stress (damage caused by free radicals attacking cells) begin to take their toll causing visible signs such as age spots and wrinkles. More importantly, it also leads to the deterioration of internal organs.

T H E B A S I C E S S E N T I A L S F O R H E A LT H Y A G I N G

Many products lead you to believe that it is possible to prevent or reverse the aging process. That is why the term “anti-aging” can be misleading. We like to promote “healthy aging.” The idea behind this concept is to educate people about the aging process and pro-vide recommendations through diet, exercise and supplementation to help manage it.

WHAT DOES THE TERM “HEALTHY AGING” MEAN?

WHAT CAUSES US TO AGE?

Page 5: Healthy Aging Book

Men And Women Have Different Nutritional NeedsWe are all unique beings, and require well-rounded

diets based on our own personal make up. Some of

us are anemic, some have a higher genetic risk of

cancer, etc. There are thousands of reasons why we

need to develop a healthy regimen of our own. One

thing’s for sure, gender differences are obviously

important when planning the proper nutritional

intake, or when there is a more specific health

concern. Generally, men don’t need to worry about

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) as much as women

do. Just as women are less likely to be concerned

with building muscle mass or taking preventa-

tive measures against prostate cancer. And the

same thing is true when it comes to healthy aging.

We’ve put together a list of gender based nutrient

supplements that we feel are important to achieving

optimum health and aiding in the healthy aging

process. We offer this data under the assumption

that all supplements listed have the same “quality

over quantity” traits listed in the opening section of

this booklet.

Antioxidants Are Vital To The Healthy Aging ProcessThe human body is the most complex machine in

the world. So complex in fact, that even after de-

cades of documented research conducted by thou-

sands of doctors and scientists worldwide, we still

have yet to produce an end all cure. However, we

don’t need to be doctors to know that millions are

getting sick and even dying from a lack of proper

nutrition in their diets. *Various research now tells

us that antioxidants like ALA (Alpha Lipoic Acid),

CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10), Vitamin C, Vitamin E,

Green Tea, Lycopene, Grape Seed Extract, Spirulina,

and more may be major players in the fight against

cancer, as well as other infections and degenera-

tive diseases. These powerful antioxidant nutrients

all work a little differently, but have one extremely

important common factor: cell rejuvenation.

HEALTHY CELLS EQUAL HEALTHY AGINGOur bodies are physiologically made up of hundreds

of trillions of human cells. Each cell is a small

container of chemicals and water wrapped in a

protective membrane. The cell core is the nucleus

containing all of the unique properties (DNA) that

create and sustain what we are. It’s important

that we define this, because the healing and

preventative power of antioxidants starts at the wall

of our own cells. The deterioration of our cells is

caused by harmful free radicals. These are atoms,

or a group of atoms, that tear down the cellular

structure and mutilate the DNA. *The damage that

free radicals leave behind is called oxidative stress,

which impairs the immune system and causes

disease. *In 1956, Dr. Dennis Harmon developed

6 | Basic Essentials for Healthy Aging

Page 8: Healthy Aging Book

the Free Radical Theory of Aging, which is now at near

global acceptance. *His research not only confirms

cellular breakdown causing degenerative diseases but

in fact, a major contributor to our aging process as a

whole. It’s hard to believe that so many problems are

caused by something so simplistic. Even simpler is the

fact that the production of free radicals IS largely con-

tributed to the oxygen we breathe. Yes, there’s more to

it than that but for the most part, every tenth breath we

take produces a free radical ready to attack our cells

indiscriminately and without remorse.

PROTECT YOUR BODY FROM DISEASE*According to the American Cancer Society, there

will be an estimated 1,419,000 new cancer cases

diagnosed in 2007, just in the US alone. *In 2006, a

shocking 1 out every 4 deaths were estimated to be

cancer related, only second to the leading cause of

death: heart disease. We all know the epidemic well,

and understand the importance of prevention. How

can we not? Millions of dollars are spent on public

awareness of cancer every year. *We do not claim that

antioxidants are the cure, however, validated research

states that they do make a considerable difference to

preventative measures and to the treatment of cancer.

According to Phyllis A. Bach, CNC – author of Pre-

scription for Nutritional Healing – “a high intake of anti-

oxidant nutrients appears to be especially protective

against cancer.” Given that cancer is largely produced

because of the production of free radicals in our

bodies, we must stay open to the idea of implementing

the daily use of antioxidant nutrient supplements into

our diets.

DETOXIFY AND REJUVENATE YOUR CELLSThe intake of antioxidants will neutralize free radicals

and can be obtained from sources such as fruits and

vegetables. If you’ve read this far, you probably already

know the problems with relying on American produce

for nutrient consumption. Our source of processed

foods simply just doesn’t cut it. *Phyllis A. Bach, CNC,

will tell you that without the use of supplements, it

is extremely difficult to obtain enough antioxidants

to keep our cells healthy. The most effective use of

antioxidant supplementation is a concoction of multiple

types, rather than taking only one type. The power of

antioxidants are better used as a team. It’s no secret

that detoxifying and rejuvenating our individual cells is

one of many processes to achieving optimum health.

The importance of this particular process is that we are

starting deep at the root of our nutrient deficiencies,

breaking our physiological make up down to it’s most

simplistic form, and finding a catalyst to successfully

treating it. With free radicals being the source of so

many infections and degenerative diseases, we must

make it a priority to keep them in check.

TOXINS IN OUR BODY AND THE AGING PROCESS -- THE EVIDENCE IS CLEAR-CUT!

The most effective use of

antioxidant supplementa-

tion is a concoction of

multiple types, rather than

taking only one type. The

power of antioxidants are

better used as a team.

If you’re looking for some evidence on how toxins and free radicals in your body can negatively effect the appearance of your skin, look no further than the 1 out of 6 Americans that smoke cigarettes. Research published in The Lancet shows what makes smokers look older than they are. Collagen is a structural protein making up about 75% of the dry weight of human skin. Scientists have found that smoking activates a gene in the skin that breaks down collagen. Naturally, collagen levels in our skin decrease with age. Antioxidants, however, fight against this process by enhancing collagen synthesis in your skin. To keep your skin’s collagen in balance after a certain age, you can benefit from antioxidants and other vitamins to boost collagen synthesis and reduce its degradation.

Amino Acids Affect The Brain, The Bronze & The Brawn Protein is a word used loosely in today’s society,

especially throughout the nutritional industry. With

all the new high protein/low carb based fad diets

and advertising campaigns with unrealistic claims,

the definition of the word has become skewed.

*Proteins are necessary for every living cell in our

bodies, and in fact for all living organisms. They

make up our muscles, ligaments, tendons, organs,

glands, nails, hair, vital bodily fluids, and are

necessary to the healthy growth of our bones. In

the last section, we talked a little bit about cells and

their importance. Our individual DNA located in the

nucleus of all of our cells provides the instructions

necessary for developing those proteins. Meaning

that our DNA is our own individual blueprint, and

essential proteins are the builders, as well as the

materials needed. *Amino acids are known as the

building blocks to producing proteins in our bodies.

There are 28 different amino acids that make up

the required proteins needed by humans. The liver

produces 80% of the amino acids used. These

types are known as non-essential amino acids

because the human body is capable of manufactur-

ing them on its own. The other 20% are known

as essential amino acids, and rely on our diets for

needed intake.

BENEFITS OF AMINO ACIDSWe now know what amino acids are and have

an idea of what can happen if we don’t have the

proper amount, but what are the perks? For one,

did you know that certain types of amino acids

are necessary for the brain to receive and send

messages? Some types have the ability to provide

energy directly to muscle tissue, making certain amino

acids a frequently used supplement for those trying to

build and tone muscle. Other possible benefits include:

increased immune function, tissue repair acceleration

after burn or trauma, protecting the liver from toxic

agents, pain relief effects, lowering blood pressure,

modulating cholesterol metabolism, stimulating insulin

or growth hormone secretion, and reducing blood

ammonia.

SYNERGY IS MOST IMPORTANTAmino acids are necessary for obtaining a well bal-

anced diet. All 28 different amino acids (essential or

non-essential) need one another to perform synergisti-

cally. In fact, everything we’ve talked about thus far

needs the other to achieve proper balance. If there’s

only one lesson taken away from reading this, let it be

the importance of synergy. Understanding this is more

crucial than anything else written here when it comes

to the proper nutrient intake. Eating a raw carrot,

taking a shot of wheat grass from time to time, or even

taking a multivitamin once a day just isn’t enough. We

need the whole package to achieve optimum health.

We all work too hard and neglect ourselves too much

to ignore it. The best way to prevent sickness and

disease is at your local nutrition store, probably within

a five-mile radius of your house or apartment. Our

bodies will love us for it, and we will look better, feel

better, and perform better in everything we do.

AMINO ACIDS AND HEALTHY AGINGAmino acids play an essential role in the healthy aging process and are often referred to as “the building blocks of life.” Everyday we find more scientific evidence which strengthens the importance of amino acids and the role they

play in re-building tissue, such as skin, muscle or bone. So even though you may show visible signs of aging on the outside, you may be able to repair some of

those scars or blemishes with amino acid supplements to make yourself look and feel younger.

health and the pros and cons of supplements

included in our diets. So we’ve put together a chart

of some more common health concerns as well

as a recommendation to what supplement may

be best fitted to that concern. To better retain this

information and to validate the benefits of these

recommended supplements, we strongly encourage

that you do your own research. Take some time

to truly understand the importance of each

PREVENTION IS THE BEST DEFENSEThe prevention of disease is the key to prolonged health, not reversing disease once it has attacked the body. While multivitamins and supplements can correct a lot of damage and reverse or slow the course of many diseases, it is far better and easier to maintain a disease free body.

HYDRATIONWater is the essence of life and plays a critical role in all of the body processes, especially metabolic, digestive and cellular regeneration. It is recom-

mended that you drink at least 8 glasses of water each day for proper hydration. The following are some health benefits to properly hydrating your body

every day:

■ Improves colon and digestive functions ■ Prevention of constipation ■ Delivers nutrients and oxygen to cells

■ Flushes out toxins and waste ■ Aids in vitamin, mineral and nutrient absorption ■ Lubricates joints and tendons

■ Moistens tissues in the eyes, nose and mouth ■ Reduces stress ■ Helps with weight loss

■ Enhances mental clarity ■ Increases energy levels and reduces fatigue

HEALTHY TIP: Use a 64 oz. water jug and fill it up first thing in the morning and make sure by the end of the day it’s gone. You’ll get your daily

recommended 8 glasses of healthy, filtered water in this single container. Plus, you’ll be less likely to crave sodas and other snacks, which can be

harmful to your body.

EXERCISECommit to doing some type of exercise at least three times per week. Be sure to stretch your muscles regularly as tight or stiff muscles decrease

your coordination and make exercise more difficult and less enjoyable. In addition, your flexibility naturally decreases as you age. If you make the

effort to stretch and keep your muscles pliable, you can maintain your flexibility longer. Ideally, stretching should be done daily and can take as little

as five minutes. The following are some health benefits associated with regular exercise:

■ Builds stamina and increases energy

■ Weight loss and muscle toning

■ Increases activity of immune cells

■ Promotes proper organ function

■ Increases blood flow to the brain, thus

boosting nerve cell production

HEALTHY TIP: Exercise doesn’t need to be strenuous

to be effective. Research shows that even a brisk

walk everyday can be very beneficial to healthy aging.

Find an activity you enjoy—not only will it help you

stick to your program, you may even look forward to

exercising.

Page 15: Healthy Aging Book

HERBAL CLEANSINGMany diseases and discomforts are directly or indirectly related to an unclean colon. With the digestive

track being some thirty feet long and associated with so many health issues, it should not be neglected.

Cleansing your body of harmful toxins allows your system to better absorb and utilize the nutrients you

take in with foods and supplements.

HEALTHY TIP: The daily consumption of high fiber foods is important to properly cleansing our bodies. Use

an herbal cleansing product once every 90 days to rid your system of harmful toxins, debris and buildup.

BALANCED DIETToday’s diets include way too many fats, sugars, and carbohydrates. *As stated earlier, people eat 60%

less fruits and vegetables than they did 15 years ago. Produce today contains less vitamins, minerals, and

nutrients critical to building/maintaining good health because of food processing, and improper replenish-

ing of our farm soils. We’ve already touched upon the importance of nutrient supplementation and the

synergy essential to our daily health regimen. Below are a few recommendations based on these facts.

HEALTHY TIP: Try eating less, more frequently. Mixing in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and regular protein

servings throughout the day can help satisfy your appetite between meals, while still providing you with

healthy food choices.

WHAT CAUSES US TO AGE?As we get older, we can begin to see the visible signs of aging, but the most significant and harmful effects of aging are taking place internally. Hor-

mone levels decrease and our metabolism slows down, making us vulnerable to illness, disease and weight gain. Declining hormone levels aren’t the

only factors that contribute to aging. Free radicals and oxidative stress (damage caused by free radicals attacking cells) begin to take their toll causing

visible signs such as age spots and wrinkles. More importantly, it also leads to the deterioration of internal organs.

In this booklet, we’ll walk you through how supplements can start you on a better path towards healthy aging today. Just read through the information

and you’ll see how important it is to supplement the essential nutrients you’re not getting from your diet.

YOU’LL DISCOVER HOW YOU CAN...■ HAVE RADIANT GLOWING SKIN

■ ENJOY MENTAL FOCUS AND CLARITY

■ COMBAT STRESS AND FATIGUE

■ HAVE VIBRANT ENERGY

■ MAINTAIN HEALTHY BODY FUNCTIONS

Many products lead you to believe that it is possible to prevent or reverse the aging process. That is why the term “anti-aging” can be misleading. We

like to promote “healthy aging.” The idea behind this concept is to educate people about the aging process and provide recommendations through

diet, exercise and supplementation to help manage it.
