TRANSCRIPT

  • Wembley High has an established reputation for a strong focus on academic excellence. Over the last five years we have been the highest-achieving non-denominational school in Brent.

Our mission is clear and simple: we provide a structured, disciplined working environment in which every student receives high-quality teaching and achieves his or her full potential. The school is first and foremost a learning community, which is reflected in its strong work ethic. There is a high standard of teaching across the curriculum with a particular focus on English, Mathematics and the Sciences. All students benefit from the use of state-of-the-art facilities across the science and technology disciplines, major investment in new facilities and resources, the best trained and qualified staff, and a culture of mutual respect.

Spiritual, social and moral provision sits alongside academic excellence at the heart of the school’s ethos. We offer a broad and stimulating range of extra-curricular activities to support wider learning, and provide an education that enables our students to gain places at universities of their choice.

In this prospectus, we want to tell you more about the students, staff and facilities that make Wembley High such an ‘Outstanding’ school.

We look forward to welcoming you.

    Teacher Profile

  • The strong academic ethos of Wembley High is reflected in the broad and balanced curriculum we offer our pupils. Our fundamental belief is that every pupil is entitled to an individually tailored curriculum to suit their personal needs. We equip pupils with the most rigorous academic qualifications that allow them to pursue courses at our top universities. Most pupils will follow a program of study that leads to a very well respected set of academic qualifications at Key Stage 4 and beyond while, for a small number of pupils, we offer a range of qualifications that will meet their vocational aspirations.

A key and unique feature of our curriculum is that we offer pupils the chance to sit exams as soon as they are ready. With the individual support we are able to provide to our pupils, we believe this gives them the greatest possible chance of success and allows them to strive for greater success. By achieving top grades by the time they start year 11, our brightest pupils are able to study a more diverse range of more academic qualifications including iGCSEs.

KEy STaGE 3 (yEar 7 and 8)In year 7 and 8, we offer all pupils a wide range of subjects that cover the traditional areas of study and give them a firm grounding in the core subjects. In English, maths and science, pupils are set by ability ensuring that most able are challenged and stretched while additional support is given to those that may need it. Again, early entry for examinations is an important feature and in 2011, our most able pupils in year 7 and 8 had already achieved mathematics GCSE (many with grade A*!!).

KEy STaGE 4 (yEar 9 – 11)At Key Stage 4, we provide an even more personalised curriculum that is geared towards the students’ individual skills and aptitudes. We continue with our accelerated GCSE exam entry and many pupils have achieved top grades in many subjects by the time they even start year 11. This not only reduces the pressures for year 11 but allows pupils to follow personalised and more advanced courses of study in a wide range of subject areas.

  • a Science FocusWembley High has a vibrant and energetic Science department with a team of highly qualified teachers who have worked at the forefront of their fields. We follow an academically rigorous programme of study, designed by our specialist team. Teachers provide exciting and challenging lessons, and in addition offer outstanding support to help our students understand the huge possibilities created by a flair for science.

Teaching is not confined to the classroom. A great deal of support is offered beyond lessons: teachers are available after school, and structured revision classes are arranged by subject specialists to provide students with the support they need to succeed.

We also have an extremely popular after-school Science Club, which develops our young scientists’ investigative skills. In the Sixth Form, our connections with the top Universities have allowed students to gain experience in innovative research laboratories. Every year, a substantial number of our Advanced level students go on to read Science, Engineering or Medicine degrees at the most prestigious Universities.

Wembley students are bright, hard working and I have a passion for helping students understand why things work the way they do.

    Teacher Profile

  • Wembley High has an outstanding Mathematics Department, which is recognised locally and nationally for the attainment and progress of our pupils.

We have regular half-term tests, so we always know our pupils’ exact levels and are able to keep supporting them to achieve their potential. We are well aware that achieving high-quality GCSEs is of paramount importance to our pupils and parents, so we encourage early entry.

We firmly believe in pupils working according to their ability, not their age. Each year, we have successfully offered early-entry GCSE to our most able year 7 and year 8 students. Students in years 8 and 9 who have achieved A’s and A*’s in their GCSE Maths exam are accelerated on to courses featuring A-level Mathematics. A-level Maths is the most popular subject choice in Sixth Form, with all of our year 13 students passing the course and 70% achieving A*–B grades.

Degree: BA in English Literature and Classical Civilisations, University of Reading.

    Interest: Renaissance poetry, Greek Drama.

I enjoy seeing students tackle writing the first chapter of a dystopian novel or studying the poetry of the First World War.

    Teacher Profile

Our approach to teaching English is both traditional and innovative, with a highly specialized curriculum for year 7 students that adopts a systematic approach to developing skills in Reading, Writing as well as Speaking and Listening. We are passionate about promoting enjoyment of reading and all year 7 and 8 students participate in the Accelerated Reader programme. Students are expected to have a book with them at all times and are encouraged to read with their form tutors, in dedicated reading lessons and at home.

The programme is supplemented through various schemes, such as the Carnegie Medal scheme and book club. We place an equal emphasis on writing and always seek opportunities to develop creativity. In addition to running a creative writing club, we have also been accepted onto the First Story programme which fosters creativity, literacy and talent by giving our students the opportunity to work with high profile authors such as Mark Haddon, Jackie Kay, Meg Rossoff, Peter Hobbs and Philip Pullman.

From year 9, students can study for GCSEs in English, English Language and English Literature. In line with School policy, we allow students to sit their exams as soon as they are ready. This allows students to obtain top grades and move on to more challenging programmes of study ahead of their peers nationally, such as the iGCSE and A Level English Literature.

  • We ensure that irrespective of a students’ background they achieve academically. Our progress data for all groups of students is one of the best in the country and has earned us recognition by the Secretary of Education in his speech in May 2012.

We have clear methods of ensuring that every student receives individually tailored support. Our students’ outstanding progress is aided by rigorous target-setting and monitoring. All students receive additional provision in two ways: first, with adapted programmes of study and, second, with curriculum extension activities.

Master lessons, particularly in Science, Mathematics, English, Geography, History, Languages, Art, Drama, Food Technology, Religious Studies and ICT, have proved very popular. Pupils are encouraged to study independently for additional qualifications in many of these subjects.

We have developed extensive links with the highly prestigious St Paul’s Girls’ and Boys’ Schools – two of the country’s top private schools. We benefit from the use of these schools’ extensive networks and resources. A number of scholarships to these schools worth in excess of £50, 000 per pupil are available exclusively to our most able students every year. This year, we have four students on these scholarships worth in excess of £200,000.

We organise residential trips to the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Trips and participation in the Brent Youth Assembly, Science and Technology Challenge Days and Reading Workshops are popular. Students take part in the Magistrates’ Mock Trial Programme, where they have the opportunity to meet legal professionals and practise the art of public speaking and debating.
