Global Expansion of Cold Formed Steel Technology

Nader Elhajj, Engineer FRAMECAD Solutions Virginia & New Zealand

Nader will be bringing everyone up to date on what has been happening around the world with cold-formed steel. With his experience at FRAMECAD, he has overseen the deployment of hundreds of portable roll forming machines to the most remote locations on Earth. This has made affordable, cold formed steel framed homes available to nearly everyone. Nader will be discussing this evolution, why it is taking place, as well as lessons learned about advancing CFS technology.

Nader Elhajj is a licensed engineer with a Master's degree in Structural engineering and an MBA. He has over 30 years of experience in the design, construction and analysis of building materials. He is the director for FRAMECAD where he oversees engineering, sales and R&D teams. Prior to FRAMECAD, Nader was the director of the Research Center for the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, D.C.. He managed research and development projects for alternative

building materials and emerging technologies. He also managed tasks related to design, construction, analysis, and field evaluation of construction materials for affordable housing. Nader developed standardized design and other prescriptive specifications for steel framing. He serves on several national and international code and industry-related committees and associations.

7 Essential Steps for Safe, Sustainable, and Cost-Effective Mid-Rise Cold-Formed Steel

Don Allen, Director of Engineering SuperStud Building Products Edison, New Jersey With globalization and automation setting the stage for a revolution in construction, and the need for taller, environmentally responsible structures pushing our construction agendas, there has never been a better time for cold-formed steel (CFS) mid-rise. While speed and strength are important considerations, owners are now demanding that their projects meet the triple bottom line of social, economic, and environmental goals. Don will demonstrate how CFS helps designers, developers, and builders meet these criteria by implementing these seven keys to success in mid-rise construction.

Over the past quarter-century, Don Allen has helped many engineers, contractors, manufacturers, code officials, and architects understand both the complexities of the code requirements and the field installation issues of structural and nonstructural cold-formed steel. Having served over nine years as Technical Director for the Steel Framing Alliance, the Steel Stud Manufacturers Association, and the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute, Don has seen firsthand how some designs have been successful while others have been disastrous

because of good or bad analysis, detailing, and construction. Don has participated in the development of the International Building Code (IBC), and ASTM and American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) standards. Currently, Don is Director of Engineering for Super Stud Building Products, Inc., and Chairman of AISI's Education Committee. He is a Registered Professional Engineer and Board Certified Structural Engineer, and a LEED Accredited Professional.

  • 20th Anniversary Seminars (continued) An Update on CFS from Down Under

Gordon Barratt, Executive Director National Association of Steel Housing (NASH) Manukau City, New Zealand Australia and New Zealand have been active participants in cold-formed steel for many years now. The Hawaii Steel Alliance has shared best practices with these two countries at annual conferences and events for the past 20 years. Gordon Barratt is the new General Manager of NASH-NZ, and has been engaged in CFS for many years as a builder and developer. Gordon will share what’s new with NASH-NZ, as well as his experiences in New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, and in other countries as he has been involved with construction and developing new standards for the industry.

Gordon Barratt is the General Manager of the National Association of Steel-framed Housing (NASH) New Zealand. He stepped into the roll after 15 years as the organizations’ Chairperson and after the retirement of the previous General Manager. He is the chairman of the NASH New Zealand Technical Committee and a member of NASH Australia’s Technical Committee. Both committees are heavily involved in the writing of documents and standards for the cold formed steel industry in those two countries.

Gordon is also Director and Owner of LGSC Ltd. a design, detailing, project management and consulting company specializing in light gauge steel framing based in Paraparaumu, New Zealand.

Keeping Wood in Check Through Legislature

Larry Williams, Executive Director Steel Framing Industry Association Falls Church, Virginia The wood industry has been pushing for code changes in recent years, to allow taller and taller structures to be built out of wood framing- sometimes 10, 12, and 14 stories tall. Building teams around the world are starting to use more large-scale structural wood systems including heavy timbers, engineered framing systems and other modern wood products. At the same time, an increase in the number of building fires using wood framing is occurring for both structures that are under construction as well as those already built. This has caught the attention of fire officials around the country, and many jurisdictions want to limit the number of stories wood framed structures can be built. Larry will discuss some of the activities the SFIA has been participating with fire officials across the nation analyzing fire data and holding the lumber industry in check where such legislation has been proposed.

Larry is the Executive Director of the Steel Framing Industry Association, the industry organization dedicated to expanding the market for cold-formed steel through Promotion, Advocacy, Education, and by providing a positive environment for Innovation. The SFIA’s 1,500 members come from virtually every facet of the construction industry, including steel mills, coil coaters, stud and connector manufacturers, component fabricators, engineers, researchers, suppliers/distributors, builders and framing contractors. SFIA members manufacture 80 percent of the steel

framing materials and supply/distribute 90 percent of the steel framing and related materials in the US. Williams has more than 35 years of experience in management, marketing and strategic communications, including 25 years in the steel and construction markets. Prior to joining the SFIA, he has served as General Manager of Market Development and Sustainability for the World Steel Association (Brussels), President of the Steel Framing Alliance, and as a founder and Executive Director of the Light Gauge Steel Engineers Association (now CFSEI). As partner in one of Northern California’s largest marketing and strategic communications firms, Williams has worked with Fortune 500 clients in the food and beverage, financial services, and travel/entertainment industries.

Steel Pricing Trends, Availability, and the Advantages of Custom Steel Buildings

Steve Campbell, President CBC Steel Buildings, A Nucor Company Lathrop, California In addition to discussing the advantages of custom steel and metal buildings, Steve will also be providing case studies and success stories. In addition, he will also be sharing his thoughts on steel and light gauge metal for construction, and discuss the steel pricing trends, availability, and the overall direction of the steel market.

Steve Campbell is the President of CBC Steel Building Company located in Lathrop, Ca. CBC is a division of the Nucor Corporation, the largest steel producer in North America. (Aloha or Business Attire Suggested)

USS Missouri, Pearl Harbor The Battleship Missouri Memorial is an American icon that stands in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The weight of the battleship is 45,000 tons- of mostly steel. What a fitting venue for celebrating the 20th anniversary of the HSA in Hawaii. Known as the location for the end of WWII, the Mighty Mo rests proudly near the USS Arizona, the 2 bookends of the war for the US. The turrets could shoot projectiles the weight of a Volkswagen Beetle for up to 20 miles away. At maximum speed, the projectile would be traveling over 1,800 mph. The 20th Anniversary Dinner Celebration and Installation Banquet will be located on the USS Missouri Battleship Fantail/Stern.

Important Information Regarding the Dinner on the USS Missouri Memorial: The Hawaii Steel Alliance is very fortunate to be able to hold our anniversary dinner on board the USS Missouri on Ford Island. As it is situated in Joint Base Pearl-Hickam, it is a secured facility, and there are strict policies for access to the Memorial. Purses, camera bags, back packs, fanny packs, etc. are not allowed. You are allowed to bring a camera but not a camera bag. You are allowed to bring your phone and other incidentals, provided it fits in a clear plastic bag (approximately 6” x 8”), which will be provided. Individuals will not be able to drive over the bridge to Ford Island. Guests are instructed to park their vehicles at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center Parking Lot. While the lot has some security, it is recommended to not leave any valuables in your car. Shuttle busses will run between the Visitor Parking Lot and the USS Missouri beginning at 5:30 pm, and will return guests back to the Parking Lot as required.
