Britons were enduring their coldest night yet of the freezing winter, with temperatures early yesterday expected to fall below the previous low point of minus 18C. The conditions also raised fears for energy supplies in Britain as gas was cut off on Thursday to almost 100 major firms in a bid to avert a crisis. The beleaguered Eurostar train service linking France, Britain and Belgium, faced further disrup- tions after a train got stuck in the Channel Tunnel. Air travellers in Europe waited anxiously to see if flights would depart after services in France, Britain and Ireland were can- celled on Thursday as treacherous conditions kept planes firmly on the runway. At Orly airport, south of Paris, flights were cancelled or delayed. British media reported that at least 22 people have died in acci- dents related to the weather since before Christmas when the coun- try was hit by the wintry blast, which the weather bureau said was the worst cold spell since 1981. Ireland has been swept by severe weather not seen for almost 50 years, with forecasters warning that a thaw was unlikely to come for six or seven days. Norway experienced tempera- tures ranging from minus 15C to minus 40C. Rapist must wait to hear sentence EDINBURGH: A man hid his face in shame as he was led into court over the rape of an Australian beautician in Edinburgh. Michal Marchlewski was due to be sentenced yesterday for the random daylight attack of last February, but a judge adjourned the case until next week. A couple believed to be relatives of his 24-year-old victim were in court for the brief hearing and will have to wait to see the homeless Polish national face justice. Judge Lord Bracadale said a full day’s hearing was needed for legal argument on whether Marchlewski should face an indefi- nite life sentence. Marchlewski remained silent in Edinburgh’s High Court as an interpreter trans- lated proceedings. The woman was living in Edin- burgh when she was abducted by Marchlewski and his cousin Tomasz Kryczyk. Just minutes away from home after work, she had pepper spray squirted into her eyes and was struck in the face in a normally busy roadway underpass. Her at- tackers dragged her into a make- shift den in the woods and took turns to repeatedly rape her over eight hours and also trying to drain her bank account. A day after the attack, Marchlewski told his accomplice: ‘‘We should have killed her.’’ Marchlewski, 21, pleaded guilty last year after Kryczyk, 26, com- mitted suicide in prison. The woman and her husband moved back to Australia after the attack. The buck stops with me, says Obama WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama has declared ‘‘the buck stops with me’’ over intelligence flaws exposed by an al-Qaida attack on a US passenger jet and ordered a sweeping homeland security overhaul. Releasing two reports on the thwarted Christmas Day bombing, Obama (pictured) said yesterday that spy agencies did not properly ‘‘connect and understand’’ disparate data that could have busted the plot as it was planned by an al-Qaida affiliate in Yemen. He said the probes revealed that US analysts knew alleged attacker Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was an extremist and knew al-Qaida in Yemen was plotting an attack — but could not connect the two strands. And as critics charge his administration is too soft on terror and slow to act after the attack, Obama said the US was ‘‘at war with al-Qaida’’ but promised terrorists would not force Americans to adopt a ‘‘siege’’ mentality. ‘‘I am less interested in passing out blame than I am in learning from and correcting these mistakes to make us safer,’’ Obama said. Prodigy off to Cambridge LONDON: A 14-year-old maths prodigy has been offered a place at Cambridge University — which, if he accepts it, would make him the youngest student there for almost 230 years. Arran Fernandez (pictured), who lives in Surrey, outside London, passed exams set by the university last year, and now need only pass his A-level physics exam to enrol. If he takes the place, he will be the youngest undergraduate since William Pitt the Younger studied there aged 14 in 1773 and went on to become prime minister. Bosses held hostage BRUSSELS: Workers at an Anheuser- Busch InBev brewery in eastern Belgium have taken their bosses hostage after an announcement of layoffs at the world’s biggest brewer, local media reports. ‘‘We are demanding that the (com- pany’s) senior managers come here and call off the layoffs,’’ Marc Devenne, a union representative, was quoted as saying by the Belga news agency. RTBF radio reported that about 10 managers at the plant were being held in a meeting room. Anheuser-Busch InBev announced on Thursday that 300 of its 3000 employees in Belgium would be laid off due to declin- ing beer consumption in the country.
