Telling the Tin Horse Highway The weekly ‘Telling the Tin Horse Highway’ column is back! Many thanks to Adam Sutton for ‘getting the ball rolling’ and giving us
an insight into the inspiration behind his Cricketing Tin Horses: New Horseland and Horsetralia. Both of which remain poised for
sporting controversy out at West Kulin. If anyone has a Tin Horse story to share please contact Gen Whisson – no doubt she will
track you down anyway.
Having a ball on the Tin Horse
Highway By Gen Whisson, Shire of Kulin
“A tin horse bowling underarm to another, what’s that all
about?”
The reaction to that question will very much depend on who
you ask and more importantly, which side of the Tasman Sea
they are from.
It’s one of the milestones in the history of Australian cricket,
an occasion that took place two decades ago. Apart from his
fine record as Australian captain, Chappell's career will always
be tainted by an incident at the MCG back in 1981, in a One-
Day game against New Zealand. With one ball remaining, to
prevent New Zealand from any chance of scoring the six they
needed to tie, Greg Chappell instructed his bowler (and
younger brother), Trevor Chappell to deliver the last ball
underarm, along the ground to the Number 10 New Zealand
batsman Brian McKechnie.
It’s an incident that most Aussie cricket fans would rather just
forget all about but for New Zealand born, Kulin farmhand
Adam Sutton, the Tin Horse Highway provided a great way to
deliver a cheeky reminder and add a bit of his home country
humour to the famous all equine attraction. The daring move
also saw him take out second place in 2012 Kulin Bush Races
Tin Horse Competition.
A sheep farmer from Waimate (pronounced Why-may-tea), in
the middle of New Zealand’s South Island and a dedicated
cricket fan Adam, says that building the tin horses was no
mean feat. “All up I would have spent at least 50 hours on
construction” he said. In keeping with the recycled art theme,
Adam built the horses from bits and pieces he could find on
Anne-Marie and Brendon Sloggett’s farm. An old lampshade created the helmet, 44 gallon drums for the bodies, a float
off a water trough for the cricket ball and piping from old pig yards made perfect appendages.
Adam says that whilst he hasn’t had too many comments about it from the Kulin locals, not surprisingly; his mates back
home love it. “It’s something which will never be forgotten in New Zealand,” he said. “It is still talked about a lot and
no matter how young or old you are, everyone knows about it.”
And whilst some may say that Adam’s all metal masterpieces where a brave move, one thing is certain: the occasion
will always be the final arrow in the quiver when Kiwis and Australians argue. And Australians know that the discussion
is then over – there's just no comeback to the incident of the underarm ball.
Kulin Sports Update
Kulin Kondinin Football Club by Ben Whisson The D Grade had a magnificent win over the HKFC junior’s last game. They put together a great team effort and did themselves proud. The B Grade had an entertaining game and a great win. Robbie Hallam showed that the young players really do have respect for their elders by feeding a hand pass to the player behind him calling for it, despite that player being KB from Hyden. Youngy’s snatch and grab to stop a certain goal in a two-on-one situation was great play, but Licka’s ‘falcon’ all alone in the goal square shows he does use his head when playing football. Award Winners 4Farmers Kondinin Jamie Spencer Kulin Community Bank Justin Winwood Mitre 10 Kulin Matt Myles Yvonne Bowey Consulting Rob Hallam The League game was a tough outing but we managed a 6 goal win against a Hyden/Karlgarin side that never gives up. A special mention must go to Regan Duckworth, who followed up Licka’s effort with a ‘falcon’ of his own. It just shows you can take the boy away from the falcons, but you can’t take the falcon…. Award Winners Kondinin Hotel Jared King Countrywide Insurance Narrogin Jarrad West Middle East Engineering Aiden Fotheringhame Crisps Corner Store Daniel Tholstrup CC Café’s Clanga of the Week: Barbara Bunworth for running over Dylan’s foot at footy before he had even got out of the car. However, a nice warm Freebairn Centre coupled with an evening meal and a few drinks topped it all off nicely. Congratulations to the winners of the Merle Mullan trophies - Tim Bradford, Jarrad West and Ben Whisson - rumour has it that Ben “carried the others”- but it is just a rumour after all! Thank you to the Robbo’s and Mullan’s for continuing to support our club. This SATURDAY July 13th we will play a stableford competition hitting off at 12 noon. Note there will be no Golf on Sunday.

Congratulations to the B Grade for having another win, they played a very good game. Also well done to the A Grade, although we had a loss the team worked really well together and fought hard to keep the scores even for majority of the game. We had made a huge improvement since the last time we played them when we lost 5 nil so well done girls. The Pearla Award was again awarded to Rynelle Smoker for getting lost not once but twice on the way home. Rynelle has to wear the pearls until the 20th July so make sure you keep an eye out for her. This week there is a bye. Our next game will be on the 20th July at home against Lake Grace. Kulin Netball Club by Brooke Tyson Last week the girls had a home game against Hyden and came away with mixed results. A Grade unfortunately went down in a well-played and hard fought game. B grade had a great game with very convincing win. This weekend we have a bye due to the Country Week Football Carnival.

Chocolate mint cookies Ingredients 250g butter, softened
1/3 cup raw caster sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups plain flour
1/2 cup rice flour 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 x 200g blocks dark chocolate, chopped
Ganache
200g block milk chocolate, chopped
1/3 cup thickened cream 1 teaspoon peppermint essence
Method
Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper. Using an electric mixer, beat butter, sugar and vanilla for 5 minutes or until light and fluffy. Sift flours and cocoa over butter mixture. Using a wooden spoon, stir until combined.
Press into 2 discs. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 15 minutes or until firm. Preheat oven to 160C/140C fan-
forced. Roll 1 disc out between 2 sheets of baking paper until 3mm thick. Using a 5cm round cutter, cut rounds
from dough. Place on prepared trays, 2cm apart, to allow room for spreading. Re-roll scraps and repeat. Bake for
8 to 10 minutes, swapping trays halfway, or until just firm. Stand on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining disc. Meanwhile, make Ganache: Place milk chocolate and cream in a
heatproof, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on Medium (50%) for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds with
a metal spoon, or until melted and smooth. Stir in essence. Cover. Refrigerate for 2 hours or until thick and
spreadable. Using 2 teaspoons at a time, sandwich cookies together with ganache. Set aside for 1 hour or until set.
Place dark chocolate in a heatproof, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on Medium(50%) for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds with a metal spoon, or until melted and smooth. Place biscuits on a wire rack set over a
baking tray lined with baking paper. Pour 1 tablespoon melted chocolate over each cookie to cover. Set aside for
30 minutes to set. Serve.
Cherry ripe brownie bar Ingredients
60g butter
52g Cadbury Cherry Ripe, finely chopped
250g dark chocolate, finely chopped 1 egg, lightly whisked
55g (1/4 cup) caster sugar
45g (1/4 cup, lightly packed) brown sugar
75g (1/2 cup) plain flour
100g red glace cherries 125ml (1/2 cup) condensed milk
65g (3/4 cup) desiccated coconut
4-6 drops of red food colouring (optional)
Method
Preheat oven to 160C. Lightly spray a 22 x 7.5cm (base measurement) bar pan with oil. Line the base and 2 long sides with baking paper, allowing sides to overhang. Use a metal spoon to stir the butter, Cherry Ripe and 120g
dark chocolate in a saucepan over medium heat until the chocolate melts. Set aside to cool slightly. Whisk the egg
and combined sugar into the chocolate mixture. Add flour. Stir until smooth. Pour into the prepared pan. Bake for
25-30 minutes or until crumbs cling to a skewer inserted into the centre. Cool slightly. Finely chop half the
cherries. Cut remaining cherries in half. Combine cherry, condensed milk and coconut in a bowl. Stir in the food colouring. Spoon cherry mixture over the brownie. Smooth surface. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until light golden.
Set aside to cool completely. Remove from the pan. Heat the remaining chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl on
medium, stirring every 30 seconds, for 2 minutes. Reserve 2 tbs melted chocolate. Pour the melted chocolate over
the bar and spread over the top and sides. Drizzle the reserved chocolate lengthways to create lines. Set aside until chocolate sets. Slice.
