RESEARCH AND TESTING LABORATORY REPORT
To the. Manager -· Salem Generati~g Station - PSE&G
August 12, 1981
No. 66268
Attention: Mr. Wo Schell
FEEDWATER HAMMER TEST, NO. 2~ FEEDWATER PIPING - SALEM GENERATING STATION
INTRODUCTION
The displacement on 3 axes of No. 21 Feedwater piping at two ha~gers, FWH 21-17 and FWH 21-18 was determined and the dynamic pressure ~esponse at drain valve 21BF-58 was recorded during the 50% power trip test of Unit No. 2, on July 23, 1981. ·
SUMMARY
The instrumentation for the feedwater hammer test was in accordance with the procedure .(Appendix A attached).
Upon co9rdinating with the Control Room and seconds before ·· 1.nitiating the 50% power trip, the instrtimentation recorder was
energized. ·
The first s~gn of movement was after the recorder was energized 23 secopds with a deflection of 0.02 inches (Figure 1). The move-ment was sinusoidal and lasted 15 seconds with.the maximum peak to peak movement of approximately 0.35 inch on the Z axes at both loca, tions and· a frequency of 3. 33 Hz (Figure 2) .. After that the piping was motionless for 20 seconds, then the thermal movement· of the pipe was the only movement noted for the duration of the test (Figure 4). The Z C!XeS is the longitudinal direction of the pipe at.hanger FWH 21-17 and perpendicular to the pipe at rwH ~l-18.
-There was no dynamic pressure response at drain valve 21BF-58 noted on the recorder.
Appendix B is the·· calibration data of the equipment used in ·the test.

6.0 Test Methods
\
6.1 The displacements of the three axes of both hang~rs and the dynamic pressure pulsation at drain valve 21BF-58 will be recorded at a speed of SOOmm/min. on a osc.ill9~ graph while the unit is at 50% power. Upon coordination with the control room the speed of the oscillograph will be increased to SOOnun/sec. for the trip. After the trip. is complete and the data is steady the recorder speed will be returned to SOOmm/min. for after test data •
. 6.2 A report will be issued with the results of the test •
