Well done to all the children who sent in pictures of their creative projects in place of being able to bring them in to celebrate, I know the classes have enjoyed sharing them in school. I also want to recognise and celebrate all the pupils who undertook home learning due to having to self-isolate in periods over the half term. Dear Parents and Carers, As this first half term draws to a close, it was fantastic to see the efforts the children have put into their Dash of Differences today! We have all agreed it has been a very appropriate way to end what has been at times, a very different half term. One thing that has not been different is that the children are enjoying having ‘fabulous finishes’ to this term’s learning experiences. Year 1

We have had a great half term and undertaken brilliant learning! In English, we have been practising the reading skills of prediction and explanation, using our focus text ‘Lost and Found’. We have really been focusing on full stops, capital letters, finger spaces, using phonics to spell words and using our best handwriting whilst doing our writing. For our Fabulous Finish we produced posters showing how wonderful our school is, which we plan to display in the key stage 1 corridor. Next half term we will be writing our Family Learning Conference agreements before we move on to our next focus text ‘Traction Man’. Phonics – In Phonics, we have been continuing to read words containing our focus sounds, using sound buttons and our blending arm to help us. We have been deciding if the words are real or alien. In Maths, we have been adding numbers by counting on. Next half term we will be moving on to subtracting numbers by crossing out. Experience – we have been finding out about what animals eat and using the words herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. Next half term our Experience is ‘Toys’ and, for our Stunning Start, we would be grateful if your child could bring in a picture of their favourite toy and be prepared to talk about it. We hope that you have a lovely half term break and look forward to seeing your child next half term. Year 2

The children have really enjoyed their first learning experience, ‘Welcome to Wonderland’, and are looking forward to their Mad Hatter’s party today. We have been very busy in our DT lessons making our Mad Hatter’s hats and are looking forward to wearing these at our Fabulous Finish. Moving on to after half term, we will start our new experience ‘London’s burning’, which has a history focus around the Great fire of London. The children will build up a time-line of the main events of this period as well as finding out about some of the key people of the time. In Maths, we will continue with adding and subtracting. The children will need to be very confident with their number bonds to 10 and 20 as this really supports their understanding. Any help at home would be much appreciated! In English, our reading will be focusing on the skills of inference and deduction. For writing, we are looking at how to use adverbs of time such as ‘firstly’ and ‘after that’. Year 3

Year 3 have had a great time exploring electrical circuits and have learned how to make our own. We used components including: batteries, switches, light bulbs, connectors and cables to test circuits with different numbers of bulbs and batteries. We are thoroughly enjoying seeing creative projects that the children have been working on too. From Dragons to circuits, photos to videos, and so many different constructions! Great work Year 3!

Year 4 Year 4 have had a focus on our VIPERS reading comprehension strategies and we have been applying them to the descriptive language within ‘Blue John’. These skills include dictionary work such as locating words and matching descriptions for vocabulary. In Maths we have been exploring different ways that addition and subtraction can be represented informally such as with a bar model, where children can create four different number sentences.

E.g. purple + green = black green + purple = black black – purple = green, and black – green = purple!

We have also continued to work on partitioning numbers using our knowledge of place value and applied these skills when representing addition on a number line. After half term we will use more formal methods for addition and subtraction calculations. We have had a fantastic half term with our sports coach and he has made the children work so hard on achieving post lockdown fitness. It was great to see the children smiling and laughing even though they were out of breath! We have used watercolours to colour mix and create images from ‘Blue John’ and have developed sketching skills to draw an eye and an ear. Please enjoy all of your children’s creations on the year 4 class page. Year 5

Year 6 The Year 6 pupils have loved the story of 'Cosmic' this term and this is evident by the exciting independent writing the book has generated. We have been focusing very much on sentence structure and encouraging our year 6 writers to use complex and compound sentences to make their writing more interesting. In Maths we have now covered all four operations and how to apply these to word problems. Daily practise is still necessary as it simply allows pupils to build up stamina and promotes self-checking in arithmetic. If children could continue to practise the four operations (+ - x ÷) over the half term it will certainly help. A big thank you to our wonderful PTA who funded a ’fabulous finish' in the form of a virtual solar system experience from Creative Space. The pupils got so much from the sessions and found them both informative and exciting. Suffice to say we hope all year 6 children and families have a pleasant half term and please continue to encourage your child to continue reading at least 20 minutes per day over the break.

Year 5 have engaged well during our 'bubble closure'. We have been really impressed by their responsible attitude to their learning, and have been rewarding their efforts with dojos. We have now finished our work on the Iron Man with some super diary writing, and really enjoyed dunking biscuits as part of a science investigation. We are delighted to be back together in school though! After half term, we are moving on to our new history based experience where we will learn about World War 1. In Maths, we will begin by learning about statistics and interpreting graphs and data.

Maths Videos Update Learners in Year 4 have enthusiastically been demonstrating how they use number lines for addition. We have captured a couple of students in action and are in the process of developing this into an information video for parents. We aim to have this video uploaded to our website within the next two weeks and will share the link with you. Please have a look at the video, even if your child is not in that year group, as we would value your feedback before embarking on further videos. Spare shoes As we move into the second half of the Autumn Term and the weather continues to turn, please can we ask that children bring in a spare pair of shoes on days that they have PE or outdoor learning. This is to ensure that we can continue to use our outside areas as much as possible. Do you have, or do you know a child born between 1st September 2016 and 31st August 2017? If so, they are eligible to start school in September 2021. Apply online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/admissions further advice or information contact 03330 142 903. Deadline is Friday 15th January 2021. We have uploaded a video of our school as well as a presentation on our school website. Please spread the word of how great our school is! PTA- Dash of Difference It’s been great to see the children (and staff) supporting our school by wearing a dash of difference today. As we can’t receive physical money presently, please if you haven’t already, donate using this link www.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/dashofdifference Many thanks for your continued support. I hope you all have an enjoyable half term and look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday 3rd November. With very kind regards Mrs Claire Spencer – Headteacher
