W hat a fabulous last two weeks we have had. Busy but yet enjoyable and

interesting with most grades now completing excursions and in school visits for

the year. And now we prepare for the final phase of the term; testing and report writing

and in between practising for the Christmas Concert! Information will go home soon to

parents and we do hope you all will come along to make it a fun time.

I must say, the highlight of the week was a very welcome visit from Majak Daw, who

plays for the North Melbourne Football Club. Majak Daw has been named as one of 19

AFL and AFL Women’s multicultural ambassadors. He will support the AFL’s

multicultural strategy through key appearances at multicultural events in his role as an

Australia Post ambassador. Majak plays a crucial role in increasing cultural awareness,

promoting inclusion and encouraging participation at all levels of Australian Football.

He presented two achievement awards at our Senior assembly to Ziggy Dingcham and

Charlotte Atkin who both made it into the Victorian Athletics Team. They will

represent Victoria at the National Championships later on in November. A big thank

you to Mr Roberts and Mr Macaulay for their part in organising the visit and for

making it all happen for Ziggy and Charlotte. The dedication and support they have

shown both the children are to be commended. We wish both children all the very best.

Also, many, many thanks to the community and everyone who donated money towards

getting Ziggy and Charlotte to Nationals. The support has been overwhelming and we

are all so proud to be a part of this amazing community at Rowellyn Park Primary

School.

To Go Up to the School or Not?

That is the Question.

If you’ve had a child at school for more than a few years, chances are

that there have been times when you have considered whether to go up

to the school about an issue that is affecting your child.

Working out what requires your intervention can be tricky. Sometimes

your child’s passionate pleas for you to do something can be persuasive.

It might be that your child has been disciplined by their teacher or there

has been an incident in the playground.

Parents can sometimes feel like they are not parenting properly unless

they go to the school to address the problem.

So, how do you decide if an issue warrants your intervention?

Naturally if your child is in serious physical or psychological danger

then you should intervene.

Otherwise ask yourself this; what would happen if I didn’t go to the

school about this issue?

An important part of being a parent is helping children learn to deal with

disappointments and difficulties. We can help our children learn to cope

emotionally with uncomfortable feelings by being there and listening to

them.

We can acknowledge that sometimes life is challenging or unfair but that

we can learn to cope with this. Helping our children recognise emotions

and deal with them, without being crushed by them, teaches our children

emotional resilience.

We can help our children feel more competent by helping them think of

some alternative ways to deal with a problem, which empowers them by

giving a sense of agency and control.

Making a decision about whether or not to go up to the school is about

assessing the problem and seeing if it can be an opportunity to help your

child to learn to manage their emotions, increase resilience and become

an independent problem solver.

Out of this World The Grade 5 students were set the task for homework to create a model of the solar system focusing on the planets, their distance from the sun and their orbital path. It was fantastic to see the creative and interesting ways that they came up with to present their understanding. Great work Grade 5s!

Did you know…?

As part of our Celebrations inquiry unit, all of Grade 3 walked down to the community centre to take part in some

cultural activities. When we arrived we were met by a group of volunteers who helped to make sure that the morning

ran smoothly and that we all got to enjoy each of the activities.

There were 5 stations set up and we were split into 5 groups. The first station was all about Earth Day and we got messy with lots of green and blue paint. The second station was about Diwali and we made a Diwali light. The third station

was about Christmas and we made colourful baubles. The fourth station was all about Chinese New Year and we got to make a dragon! The last station was based on St. Patrick’s Day and we made a game board.

Grade 3 had a fun-filled morning at the Lyrebird Community Centre!

This week saw half of our Foundation students embark on a wonderful excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium. Everyone was able to explore and learn about a variety of our most popular sea creatures. Some of these included sharks, stingrays, penguins and jellyfish. There were opportunities to hold sea stars, sea sponges and empty shark eggs at the interactive rockpools. Everyone’s favourite was of course the penguins as they showed off their swimming and diving skills and the giant aquarium room. Next week our adventures continue as the rest of the Foundation team visit the Melbourne Aquarium. A very big thank you to all staff involved!

Our trip to the Cranbourne

Botanical Gardens Last Thursday the grade 4 students set out on an adventure to the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens as part of our Living Things Inquiry topic. We were

able to freely move around the scenic award winning Australian Garden. We explored its picturesque

surroundings and took in its natural beauty whilst discovering its diverse flora. We wandered through

the different gardens which included the Box garden, Peppermint garden, Arid garden, Weird and Wonderful garden, the Gondwana garden and many

more. Here are some snap shots of our exciting day!

Writer’s Notebook

In Grade 1, we have been using our writer’s notebook as part of our writing session. Children brainstorm their thoughts and ideas to create a page about adjectives, nouns, verbs, characters, setting, problem and solution based on the Narrative genre. They have also completed several other pages on a different genre such as a recount, procedural text and a letter. Students work on a piece based on a prompt from their Writer's Notebook at the end of the week. It gives them the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity.

About the guest speaker…

Abdi Abden’s world fell apart when he

was only fifteen and Somalia’s vicious

civil war hit Mogadishu. Unable to find

his family and effectively an orphan, he

fled with some sixty others, and joined

another 300 heading to Kenya. After almost 3 months they

arrived at refugee camps in Kenya—of the group he had set out

with, only five had survived.

All alone in the world and desperate to find his family, Abdi

couldn’t stay in Kenya, so he turned around and undertook the

dangerous journey back to Modadishu. He was sixteen years

old when he arrived in Melbourne. He had no English, no fami-

ly or friends, no money, no home. Yet, against the odds, he not

only survived, he thrived. Abdi went on to complete secondary

education and later university. He became a youth worker, was

acknowledged with the 2007 Victorian Refugee Recognition

Award and was featured in the SBS second series of ‘Go Back

to Where You Came From’.

DigiTech 2018

Presenting the ‘air inspector’ – with Jeron, Sanjeeth, Matt and Tanmay

A ‘Kids-Teaching-Kids’ Conference

On Friday 9th November six of our Grade 5 and 6 students were chosen to present their knowledge and skills with Digital Technologies at our network’s ‘kids-teaching-kids’ conference. Schools from all around our region attended DigiTech with their students who were keen to learn and develop their own skills in a mentoring forum. The concept behind DigiTech is that kids love hearing from other kids, and they are more inspired and motivated to learn when instructed by their peers. I chose students from our school to present at this unique conference based on their commitment, capabilities, initiative and willingness to go above and beyond to enrich their learning with Digital Technologies. The students involved were:

Matthew Sinclair, Tanmay Kattali, Jeron Street, Sanjeeth Kapatkar, Samantha Worrall, Alexander Tasker

I was extremely proud of how they conducted themselves, their confidence while speaking publicly and their thoughtful interactions with students from other schools. They were excellent ambassadors of our school and represented themselves with pride and high esteem.

Sam and Ali demonstrate the

game they designed ‘Farmers

Are Friends’.

Ali shows students how to code

controllers in a game.

Sam shows students how

to code a sprite to move

in a game.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION REPORT

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT

Jake Macaulay and Gladwyn Roberts Physical Education

Congratulations to Alannah who placed 2nd in

the Under 14’s 3000m Walk at the State Track

and Field Finals. She also beat her Personal Best

with a time of 17 minutes and 25 seconds.

Alannah demonstrates an outstanding attitude

and commitment towards her event and we could

not be more proud of her and her achievements.

Although, unfortunately, Alannah came 2nd she

doesn’t qualify for Nationals because she is too

young. However, what an amazing achievement

to place 2nd against students older than her. We

are all excited to see her improve and hopefully

one day compete at the highest level!

HEAD LICE NEWS!

The evil little critters were recently seen happily marching along a few heads!! Many eggs were detected and notices handed out for

parents to take action against these pests!

A little tip: To avoid scratching, stop them hatching!

We have been told the best solution to the problem is hair conditioner. Saturate the hair and comb out the eggs with a fine tooth comb. Worth a try.

Student Accident Insurance Arrangements

Main Points

Parents are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs.

Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers. These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

Ambulance

Each year we find there are a number of occasions when we are required to call an ambulance. The decision to call an ambulance is made under the advice of qualified and experienced first aid staff and after making every effort, generally with success, to inform the parents or guardians. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development requires schools to call an ambulance when it is deemed one is required, as the priority must always be the wellbeing of the sick or injured person.

The full cost of ambulance treatment and/or transport applies to people who are not insured against the cost of ambulance services. The fees do not apply to Victorian Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card holders.

Some health insurance policies may include ambulance cover, however some policies may not cover more than one emergency ambulance trip per year, or the full costs of air transport or non-emergency transport fees.

Additional Information

It is not compulsory for schools to purchase whole-of-school policies.

The Department cannot advise parents/guardians on whether to purchase a student accident policy or which policy to purchase. It is recommended that they seek assistance in this matter with their insurance broker or find a suitable personal accident insurer in the Yellow Pages or online.

Personal Goods Brought to School at Owner's Risk

Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This can include mobile phones, electronic games, calculators, toys, musical instruments, sporting equipment, and cars parked on school premises.

The Department of Education and Training does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.

Please refrain from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school.
