Dear parents and carers, Incredibly we are half way through the academic year, with much to celebrate as well

as look forward to. This newsletter aims to give you a flavour of both.

Positive feedback for our Fabulous Finishes

Thank you so much for joining us for many of the Fabulous Finishes to the children’s

Learning Experiences. Due to parent feedback, we try to space out invitations to join

our Fabulous Finishes over the year. We keep a comment book to note of positive

feedback which we keep by the office.

Recent comments and emails have included:

Year 6 Explorer talk: “Please pass on my heartfelt thanks for inviting such an

enthusiastic and engaging guest speaker today. My daughter was completed

enthralled, loved all his pictures and really has come away with a sense how much can

be achieved through grit and perseverance.”

Year 4 Roman Museum: “Just a note to say how much we enjoyed our visit to the

Roman museum display yesterday. The items on display that the pupils had made

were excellent and what was most impressive was the confidence they all showed

when explaining the details of each item. The marching by the children was great to

watch and nobody appeared to put a foot wrong!”

Halsford House Cup winners

Huge congratulations to Earth House Team – who achieved the most Core Value

awards over the course of the first Spring term. Well done to all the pupils for

achieving so many Core Value counters.

Early Years Early Years have had a brilliant start to our new experience learning about superheroes. We had an exciting afternoon on Tuesday with Dr Morley creating our own superhero potions and slime. We enjoyed using our senses to observe the chemical reactions. Next week we will be reading Supertato and exploring the story. In maths we will be ordering numbers within 20. We would love to see your children's super learning at home on tapestry! Our next Find Out Friday sessions will be on Friday 13th 2:40pm. A reminder that we are doing outdoor learning every Thursday afternoon and children will need outdoor clothes to change into and appropriate shoes. We are looking for parent helpers, so please contact the office or the EY team if you are available.

Year 1 Experience: We have had a fantastic start to our Starry Night experience, producing our own starry art work to display in our classroom. We will be continuing our Experience by learning about who Vincent Van Gogh was, and studying his work. In Music lessons we will be experimenting with different instruments; listening to the sounds they make. Maths: This week we have been learning to count in twos, fives and tens. Please keep practising this at home. This half term we will also be learning about length, height, weight and volume. English: Our focus text for English will be space themed non-fiction and we will be working together initially, then independently, to write a space fact file. We will continue to practise our sounds in Phonics, using that knowledge to practise reading real and alien words. We will be using Phonics Play to practise this. We look forward to seeing you at our next Find out Friday session on 6th March at 2.30pm.

Year 2 In Year 2 we are excited to begin learning about our new Experience: Paws, Claws and Scary Roars, which is all about cats! So far we have really enjoyed our visit from Cats Protection and have learned a lot about how to care for them. In Maths, we have started to name different 2D and 3D shapes, we have found it really interesting seeing where we can spot shapes around us in our everyday lives. Over the next couple of weeks we will be looking at the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes and learning how to describe these using mathematical language. In English, we are learning about poetry and have been exploring different types of poems. We will be moving on to writing our own poems in a style of our choosing over the next few weeks.

Year 3

we then created our individual piece of art which we then combined as a class for our doors! As part of our new experience, 'A picture paints a thousand words,' we will be developing our sketching skills over the coming weeks, working towards creating a large class piece or artwork for our Fabulous Finish, which we will be inviting Mrs Spencer to unveil for us. We will also be learning to play the ukulele in school as well as listening to a range of music to develop our appreciation or different musical genres. In PE we will be developing our hockey skills and using our class text, 'Journey' by Aaron Becker as a stimulus for our class dance. Year 4

It was fantastic to see so many parents and grandparents who came to our Museum at the end of term. The children loved sharing their learning with you. Leo asked his mum to say ‘it was really good’ but she said that it was ‘better than that’. This term is very busy as we look forward to our stay at Hindleap Warren. Our experience this half term is around Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem ‘From a Railway Carriage’ which we will use to inspire our own poetry and art. In maths we will be looking at area before moving onto fractions.

Year 5 Year 5 had a fantastic last half term using ‘Clockwork’ by Phillip Pullman as our core text. We hope you enjoyed seeing all their hard work at our fabulous finish where we showed the DT skills we had learned to produce our new figure for the Glockenheim Clock. The children were very proud of their models which included using a cam mechanism to make the figure move. On the last day of term Year 5 enjoyed a trip to Sackville where we watched a fabulous performance of Joseph. This half term we are starting a new experience called ‘Stand and Deliver’. Over the next few weeks in English we will be reading the narrative poem ‘The Highwayman’ written by Alfred Noyes and understand the importance of using figurative language to create clear and precise images for the reader. In art we will use the illustrations and extracts from the poem to inspire us. In maths we will continue work on fractions. As you may be aware, 5EW have been having cornet lessons and they would like to invite you to a performance to show you what they have learnt. This will take place on 19th March 2020 at 9.15am. 5SS will have their 10 lessons after this and then a performance later in the Summer term. A letter will be sent out closer to the time.

We had a fabulous end to the first half of the Spring term, creating our puppets, which we used to tell our stories to the year 2 children. We were very impressed with the care and detail the children had taken when creating their puppets and the Year 2's also loved hearing their stories and seeing their creations.

This week we had a stunning start at our very own Art Gallery, where the children had the opportunity to look at a selection of artwork from some very well-known artists. This was great inspiration for us when

Year 6 Year 6 have begun their new experience by studying animal bones and sketching these. ‘Grow and Evolve' looks at the study of animals, birds and insects and their ancestors. Our key text is ' Beetle Boy ' a very humorous mystery set in an entomology lab. Children have been studying the characters and dialogue and how these move the story forward. We have been interviewing the 'characters' in order to really understand their author’s characterization. In Maths we have hit the ground running with ratio and proportion. We have only a few new concepts to teach and learn before we start our SATs revision in earnest. Incidentally, children have started making revision flashcards in class; these can be taken home but must be returned daily for classroom use. Tanzanian visitors On the 13th February we were very lucky to host some Tanzanian Students, which we have done previously. These student are linked with Imberhorne School and visited us at Halsford Park to see what a Primary School was like. They started with a tour of the school by two children, from year 5, who did a great job and were a credit to the school. During the day, they worked with children in the classroom, either reading with them or working alongside them in their work. When in Year 5 they also demonstrated some greetings with us. Each class also had a question and answer session where our children learned a little about what life is like in Tanzania.
