Gunjan Gurnani Automatic Control & Systems Engineering. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #WeAreInternational I am a final year student in BEng Computer Systems Engineering at ACSE. I have always loved programming and have been studying it since I was young. I wanted to explore what could be done with hardware and not just software. That led me to take up this course at Sheffield and I absolutely love it! While applying to universities, I noticed that not many of them offered a course that covered the areas I was interested in. The courses at ACSE definitely stood out and I later found out that it was one of the best in Europe which was a great plus. The modules drew my interest and made me keen to join ACSE at Sheffield. I grew up in Dubai, a city where it’s always summer (like more than 40 degrees most of the time), it took me a while to understand and get used to the weather here. Like moving into any new city, it takes a while to know where things are and where to go. Moving to a different country and meeting so many people from various backgrounds was a big change but is a great experience. Both ACSE and the University are very welcoming and make you feel good to be here. The University has a Sheffield Mentors scheme which are basically student volunteers and I was assigned a mentor from the ACSE department itself. Having a mentor definitely helped in knowing how to go about the university and what to expect from the course. During Intro week, we had a welcome talk from the department and they gave us all the support we needed in the first year. We were also assigned personal tutors whom we would meet almost every week. The beautiful city, the friendly people, and the buzzing Students Union are just a few of the things that makes me love Sheffield. Anyone from anywhere can feel at home here. With more than 400 societies, there is something for everyone to be involved in! What I love most about ACSE is how friendly and supportive the staff are to the students. Being a small department compared to other engineering fields, it has a more personal touch and makes me feel very comfortable. Sheffield was very different to Dubai. In Dubai it is ridiculously hot, very flat land, and a city filled with skyscrapers and malls. Sheffield is usually very windy, has a hilly terrain, and beautiful peaks and greenery all around. I love both cities, and Sheffield has become a second home to me. I love the markets in the city centre, the bustling university and the nightlife. It is a wonderful change from home. I would tell new students not to be afraid to try new things when you come to Sheffield.

I am a final year student in BEng Computer Systems Engineering at ACSE.

Like moving into any new city,

it takes a while to know where things are and where to go.

The beautiful city, the friendly people, and the buzzing Students Union are just a few of the things

that makes me love Sheffield.
