Em abril, Guimarães é centro para a criação musical e por cá juntam-se artistas provenientes de diferentes nacionalidades e de vários estilos musicais. Pelo terceiro ano consecutivo, o Westway LAB retorna à cidade num festival sem precedentes no cenário nacional. O mês não se fecha neste evento e a programação apresenta também outras propostas como teatro, circo contemporâneo e várias exposições. Abril, mês da Liberdade, anda de mãos dadas com a Cultura!

Abril já carrega em si o carimbo do Westway LAB. Este festival, que se concentra nos dias 14, 15 e 16, avança decidido nesta 3ª edição, comprovando que a força das ideias e a capacidade de as implementar pode ajudar a criar novos mundos e a formular novas realidades. De 06 a 15 de abril, há Residências Artísticas que decorrem no Centro de Criação de Candoso. O desafio é forte e original: formar um projeto musical temporário ou até efémero, combinado entre músicos nacionais e internacionais. De 14 a 16 de abril, o Westway LAB apresenta um dos pontos fortes da sua programação: as Conferências PRO que, este ano, contam com duas palestras de figuras de relevo na indústria da música independente internacional, Charles Caldas, da Merlin, e Helen Smith, da Impala. Também as Talks regressam à cidade para proporcionarem um momento para conhecimento mútuo entre os artistas e o público, num ambiente informal e descontraído. O festival apresenta, ainda, Showcases que resultam das residências artísticas e traz a Guimarães diversos artistas que atuarão ao longo do fim de semana como Ivan and the Parazol, The Membranes com o Coro de Jazz do Convívio, Sarah P., Filho da Mãe, My Baby, PAUS e Rui Maia. Este ano, uma das novidades é o GigMit Stage onde vão atuar três bandas selecionadas através de um “open call” que recebeu mais de 200 candidaturas. O Westway LAB apresenta, assim, um cartaz promissor que fará certamente a cidade agitar-se em torno deste evento.

Contudo, a programação de abril reserva, ainda, muitas outras propostas. No dia 02, o palco do Café Concerto do CCVF pertence aos Paraguaii, banda vimaranense unida pela amizade, mas também pelo amor pela música. No dia 08, é a vez do teatro marcar presença no Pequeno Auditório do CCVF. A peça “Os Jogadores”, de Pau Miró, chega até nós pelas mãos dos Artistas Unidos e é uma radiografia das relações humanas, da parte obscura e inacessível, salpicada de humor e de um saudável espírito lúdico. No dia 22 de abril, novamente no Pequeno Auditório do CCVF, a companhia Erva Daninha traz-nos a peça de circo contemporâneo “Nozes a quem não tem dentes”. O espetáculo parte da ideia de oportunidade para uma reflexão sobre o livre arbítrio, o poder, o acesso e a escolha, numa perspetiva simbólica e irónica dos acontecimentos atuais que nos inquietam. No dia seguinte, a Orquestra do Norte e o Coro Sinfónico Inês de Castro sobem ao palco do Grande Auditório do CCVF para um Concerto Coral Sinfónico comemorativo dos 150 anos da Associação de Socorros Mútuos Artística Vimaranense. No dia 24 de abril, o Centro Cultural Vila Flor acolhe, também, o concerto Sons da Liberdade, integrado nas Comemorações do 25 de abril, promovidas pela Câmara Municipal de Guimarães.No último sábado do mês, na Black Box da Plataforma das Artes, Rafael Toral faz-se acompanhar por Ricardo Webbens e Ricardo Dillon Wanke, o Space Collective 3, para estrear “Moon Field”, um trabalho associado à exposição “Civilizações de Tipo I, II e III” que Rui Toscano apresenta no Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (CIAJG).Em abril, também o Serviço Educativo apresenta uma programação diversificada. Nos dias 09 e 10, às 10h30 e 11h30, os pequenos bebés e as suas famílias poderão participar na oficina/espetáculo “Nuvem :”, um projeto de criação de acontecimentos-histórias fabricadas em cada momento a partir do poder de exploração, de decisão e de invenção dos bebés. No segundo sábado do mês, os já habituais Sábados em Família prometem juntar miúdos e graúdos no CIAJG e, no dia 16, a Black Box da Plataforma das Artes acolhe “Livre como um Livro”, uma sessão de leitura comemorativa da Liberdade que envolve alunos das escolas do concelho. Recordamos que, no Palácio Vila Flor, continua patente a exposição de Carlos Lobo, “Still There” e, no Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães, continuam expostas três magníficas mostras de Rui Toscano, Francisco Janes e João Grama. Não perca, ainda, a oportunidade de revisitar a coleção permanente do CIAJG que, nesta mais recente montagem, conta com a intervenção de Tomás Cunha Ferreira. Os Paraguaii são uma banda vimaranense, unida pela amizade mas também pelo amor pela música. É assim que nasce mais um projeto promissor com berço na “cidade berço”, resultado de cumplicidades que vamos ver ao vivo no palco do Café Concerto do CCVF.

Depois de, em março de 2015, terem lançado o primeiro EP e percorrido Portugal com singles como “She”, “Tucano Baby” e “Black Ships”, a banda esteve em estúdio a terminar o disco de estreia. O single de avanço, “Scope”, introduz o tema do álbum que foi lançado no passado mês de março. Baseando-se no conceito de amplitude espacial e envolvendo-se numa onda de cosmologia criativa, os Paraguaii buscam inspiração no espaço para se interrogar sobre o nosso lugar no cosmos e a forma como este se ramifica para a auto-perceção e consciencialização humana. O projeto constrói, assim, a sua anatomia musical em dicotomias que conjugam elementos micro e macro, distância e proximidade, tempo e espaço. Os Paraguaii apresentam-se, agora, como um mergulho num denso, amplo e profundo espaço de luz.

Paraguaii is a band from Guimarães, brought together out of friendship but also out of their mutual love of music. Thus another promising band is born in the city that is the Cradle of the Nation, the CCVF Café Concerto setting the stage for a live performance. After releasing their first EP in March of 2015 and traveling the country with popular singles such as “She”, “Tucano Baby” and “Black Ships”, the band re-turned to the studio for their debut album. The advance single, “Scope,” introduces the theme of the album,

which reached the public last month. Paraguaii are inspired by the concept of amplitude in space and being envel-oped in a wave of creative cosmology, and thus they question our place in the universe and how this has ramifications on self-perception and human aware-ness. The group is constructing their musical anatomy with dichotomies that join together both macro and micro ele-ments, distance and proximity, and time and space. Paraguaii on stage is like a dive into a dense, ample, and deep space filled with light.

“Os Jogadores” é uma radiografia das relações humanas, da parte obscura e inacessível que esconde todo o mundo, salpicada de humor e, claro, de um saudável espírito lúdico.

Peça escrita por Pau Miró (Barcelona, 1974), “Os Jogadores” é uma tragicomédia contemporânea onde o herói trágico é a própria sociedade. Um grupo de homens aparentemente inócuos vinga-se de um mundo de onde se sente excluído; um mundo “que mudou”. Ainda assim, nenhum deles é capaz de admitir qualquer responsabilidade pela criação dessa sociedade, desse mundo de cadeias de supermercado e de maus apartamen-tos, de burlas e formas de conseguir dinheiro fácil. Com encenação de Jorge Silva Melo, “Os Jogadores” assinalaram, em setembro de 2015, a comemoração dos 20 anos de atividade dos Artistas Unidos.

“Os Jogadores” (“The Players”) is an X-ray of human re-lationships, of the dark and inaccessible core which hides within one and all, sprinkled with humor, and of course, a healthy dose of fun. A play written by Pau Miró (Barcelona, 1974), “The Players” is a contemporary tragi-comedy where the tragic hero is Society itself. A group of apparently innocuous men take their venge-ance out on a world where they feel excluded, a world “which has changed.” Even so, none of the men is able to own up to any responsibility for having created this society, this world of supermarket chains and ramshackle apartments, and of swindles and ways to make easy money. Directed by Jorge Silva Melo, the performance of “The Players” in September 2015 commemorated the 20th anniversary of Artistas Unidos.

Através de técnicas de circo atuais como o mastro chinês, a acrobacia e a manipulação de objetos, “Nozes a quem não tem dentes” desenvolve uma investigação sobre o querer, o desejar e o aproveitar.

Nova criação da companhia portuense Erva Daninha, “Nozes a quem não tem dentes” parte da ideia de oportunidade para uma reflexão sobre o livre arbítrio, o poder, o acesso e a escolha, numa perspetiva simbólica e irónica dos acontecimentos atuais que nos inquietam. Três artistas de circo navegam pela riqueza e ostentação sem a conseguirem aproveitar, navegam pelas melodias maravilhosas de ouvidos moucos, quebram as nozes, mas não as comem. Desdentados e desejosos, continuam na busca dos que já possuem esse fruto seco duro e maravilhoso. O que vale mais? A casca ou o fruto? A fome ou a vontade de comer? Neste espetáculo, a criação musical da Sonoscopia cria um universo intimista, poético e provocador, onde o circo surge como expressão do risco e do desafio na comunicação do corpo e do seu movimento.

A performance using circus arts such as the Chinese pole, acrobatics, and the manipulation of objects, “Nozes a quem não tem dentes” is a show which investigates the feeling of wanting, yearning, and enjoying. The new pro-duction from the Oporto-based com-pany Erva Daninha, “Nozes a quem não tem dentes” (literally, “Giving walnuts to those who have no teeth,” a prov-erb along the lines of “Cast not your pearls before swine”) is a reflection on free will, power, access, and choice in a symbolic and ironic perspective on today’s troubling current events. Three

circus performers travel through wealth and ostentation without enjoying either of them, they sail through marvelous melodies with deaf ears, and crack open the walnuts which they do not eat. Toothless and envious, they continue in their search for those who hold this wonderful fruit. But what is worth more – the shell or the fruit? Hunger or the desire to eat? In the show the music of Sonoscopia creates an intimate, poetic, and provocative universe where the circus emerges as the expression of risk and the challenge the body feels to communicate and express movement.

A Orquestra do Norte e o Coro Sinfónico Inês de Castro sobem ao palco do Grande Auditório do CCVF para um concerto coral-sinfónico comemorativo dos 150 anos da Associação de Socorros Mútuos Artística Vimaranense (ASMAV).

O grande momento deste concerto é a estreia da obra coral-sinfónica “Cantata Gnóstica”, com música de Jorge Salgueiro e poemas de Francisco Teixeira. A interpretação vai estar a cargo da Orquestra do Norte e do Coro Sinfónico Inês de Castro, sob a direção do compositor. A obra constitui-se em sete partes e é um ensaio musical e poético do que terá sido, ou poderia ser, uma cerimónia de cristãos gnósticos primitivos, dos I e II séculos da era cristã. Na primeira parte do concerto serão interpretadas, em estreia na versão orquestral, as sete canções do ciclo “A vida de um vinho”, também com música de Jorge Salgueiro e poemas de Francisco Teixeira. Este ciclo de canções é uma encomenda da Casa de Vinhos Ermelinda Freitas, para o lançamento do projeto de solidariedade e do vinho com o mesmo nome. A interpretação será da mezzo-soprano Carolina Figueiredo e da Orquestra do Norte, dirigida pelo compositor.

The Orquestra do Norte and the Inês de Castro Symphonic Chorus take to the stage of CCVF’s Grand Auditorium for a choral-symphonic concert to com-memorate the 150th anniversary of the Guimarães organization, Associação de Socorros Mútuos Artística Vimaranense (ASMAV).The highpoint of this concert is the première of the choral-symphonic work entitled “Cantata Gnóstica,” with music by Jorge Salgueiro and lyrics from the poems of Francisco Teixeira. The perform-ance will be given by the Orquestra do Norte and the Inês de Castro Symphonic Chorus, under the direction of the com-poser himself. The seven-part work is a musical and poetic essay depicting what a ceremony of the early Christian Gnostics in the 1st and 2nd centuries might have resembled. The first part of the evening’s concert will feature the orchestral ver-sion of the seven songs from the cycle “A Vida de um Vinho” (“The Life of a Wine”), also composed by Jorge Salgueiro and with lyrics from the poems of Francisco Teixeira. This song cycle was a commis-sion made by the wine producer Casa de Vinhos Ermelinda Freitas for the launch of a solidarity project and a wine given the same name. Mezzo-soprano Caro-lina Figueiredo and the Orquestra do Norte will perform, with the composer at the baton.

Com este concerto, pretende-se viajar em paralelo pela Música e pela História, celebrando e homenageando todos aqueles que em nome da Liberdade se ergueram e lutaram.

O concerto comemorativo do 25 de Abril deste ano não se confina à Música Portuguesa da Resistência, mas, assumindo a ideia de viagem, passará pelas músicas de muitas lutas pela liberdade, desde a Guerra Civil de Espanha, à Resistência Anti-Nazi, às Lutas contra as Ditaduras na América Latina, aos Direitos Civis dos Negros Americanos e ao Movimento Anti-Guerra do Vietname. A Banda Musical de Pevidém, com o seu reconhecido mérito, conduzir-nos-á neste percurso pelas músicas que já são parte integrante do património cultural dos povos. O Cineclube de Guimarães assegurará imagens que contextualizarão os momentos históricos em que as músicas foram fator fundamental de afirmação do espírito de Liberdade. O elenco artístico completa-se com músicos (solistas) e os coros de Guimarães que a Câmara Municipal convidou para participar no espetáculo “Sons da Liberdade”.

With this concert, the idea is to travel on a two-part journey, one traversing both Music and History, to celebrate and honor all those who have risen up and fought in the name of Freedom.This year’s commemorative concert for “25 de Abril” will not be confined to Portuguese Protest Songs but will be a sort of a journey, one featuring songs from many struggles for freedom, from the Spanish Civil War to the Anti-Nazi Resistance to the struggles against Latin American dictatorships, the Civil Rights struggles of Blacks in America, and the Anti-Vietnam War movement in the US. The widely recognized Pevidém Music Band will take us on this trip with the songs that now belong to the cultural heritage of all peoples everywhere. The Cineclube de Guimarães will be in charge of the images which will contextualize these historical moments in which the songs played a fundamental role in the affirmation of the unwavering spirit of freedom alive at the time. Also perform-ing in the cast of artists will be musicians/soloists and choirs from Guimarães which the City Hall has invited to participate in this special event, which salutes the “Sounds of Freedom”.

Esta formação do Space Collective 3 irá estrear “Moon Field”, um trabalho associado à exposição “Civilizações de Tipo I, II e III” de Rui Toscano, patente no CIAJG. O Space Collective é uma formação aberta e variável, com capacidade para múltiplas abordagens musicais. A sua formação pode ir do duo a uma orquestra, e a numeração indica o número de músicos de cada formação. Este concerto é a primeira apresentação do Space Collective em Guimarães.

The group Space Collective 3 will premiere its work “Moon Field,” a work associated with the exhibition entitled “Civilizations of Type I, II, and III” by Rui Toscano and on exhibition at the CIAJG. The Space Collective is an open and variable group with an ability to approach music from a variety of sides. The group may go from a duet to an orchestra, the number indicat-ing only how many people are needed for any given piece. This concert is the Space Collective’s first performance in Guimarães.

Estive no Líbano entre os dias 5 e 14 de janeiro. Deambulei pelas ruas desertas e movimentadas de Beirute, captando imagens e tentando compreender esta cidade complexa. Por toda a parte deparava com vestígios da história e de guerras prévias. No dia 12 de janeiro, o governo libanês caiu. Um taxista passou por mim e gritou: Não temos governo! As mesmas ruas estavam agora repletas de militares e o acto de fotografar deixou de ser tão simples como anteriormente. Avancei para a baixa da cidade junto ao mar e tirei a minha última foto em Beirute. Fotografei o mar, de um azul profundo e muito plácido… a vida prossegue.

I was in Lebanon from the 5th to the 14th of January. I strolled around both the empty and busy streets of Beirut, tak-ing photos and trying to come to grips with this complex city. Traces of history and previous wars were to be found everywhere. On the 12th of January, the Lebanese government collapsed. A taxi driver passed by and shouted We have no government! Suddenly the same streets were now filled with mili-tary soldiers and taking photos as not as simple as before. I walked downtown by the seaside and did my last photo in Beirut. I photographed the sea, deep blue and very placid... still there.

With the exhibition, “Civilizações de Tipo I, II e III”, (“Type I, II and III Civilizations”), Rui Toscano is moving forward with, deep-ening and to a certain extent expanding his investigation of the universe of the exploration of space, a theme which the artist has already touched upon in isolated works in the past and has dedi-cated recent exhibitions. The present exhibition brings together a group of unseen and quite revealing pieces from the vast spectrum of media which Rui Toscano delves into, which range from sound to light and include photographic images, painting, drawing, and video and which incorporate strategies that he has persistently developed along his more than 20 year career. This exhibition is made possible via a partnership with Museu do Chiado – Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea.

Com a exposição “Civilizações de Tipo I, II e III”, Rui Toscano prossegue, aprofunda e, em certa medida, expande a investigação em torno do universo de exploração espacial, que o artista havia já abordado em peças isoladas e de um tema ao qual dedicou recentes exposições. A presente exposição reúne um conjunto de peças inéditas bem elucidativo do vasto espetro de suportes que Rui Toscano explora, que vão do som à luz, passando pela imagem fotográfica, a pintura, o desenho e o vídeo, mas também das estratégias que vem persistentemente desenvolvendo ao longo do seu trabalho, há já mais de 20 anos. A exposição constitui uma parceria com o Museu do Chiado - Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea.

The Westway LAB thus emerges in this powerful universe of music as an event that brings together three themes at the same time: process, thought, and product.This is a plan which is increasingly struc-tured upon the importance which creative-ness and originality play, the transecting with experience, the embedding of this knowledge into the territory which has encouraged it, and in the sublimation of the innate facets of a city, which, more than focusing on its past history, is motivated to write its future history in an unforgettable way. But on the topic of history, this 3rd edition of Westway LAB has added new chapters and strengthened the dimensions which distinguish it from other festivals. This year we have set up a new stage in partnership with the international platform for live music, GIGMIT, which will allow musicians

and bands to apply to come appear at a showcase in the festival. And we are paying even closer attention to where to locate the artistic centers of the city, considering the opening concert and the main stage which will make for an unusual and exciting event. Proof of this will be the concert of the legendary Membranes, who will perform their songs accompanied by the Convívio Jazz Chorus. Above all, it is important to speak about the amazing level energy which the city takes on, with its public spaces buzzing with artists mingling with the population, with this happening more and more with every passing year of the festival. Whether at Tio Júlio’s or at the Vila Flor Cultural Center, the music has come to stay and to transform that which is increasingly becoming a city destined for creative and artistic spirits. Conceptualizing and holding a festival that is bold and yet grounded along the lines of growth, sustaina-bility, and the material/immaterial transformation of the city, and whose point of departure is the creative process, seems like quite an unreal proposition, but in fact the Westway LAB, this year in its 3rd edition, has decidedly set out to prove that its strength of ideas and its ability to implement them can help to create new worlds and to formulate even more posi-tive new realities. Guimarães expresses an identity which enjoys a strong relationship with both Europe and the world. It is increasingly a contemporary city that is open to that fascination about the future which responds to the city’s need to remain at the foreground of cultural events that are solidly creative and dynamic.

RESIDÊNCIAS ARTÍSTICAS CONFERÊNCIAS PRO

O desafio é forte e original: formar um projeto musical temporário ou até efémero, combinado entre músicos nacionais e internacionais. Uma semana para afastar rotinas, entregar a mente à experimentação e métodos de composição mais espontâneos. Um processo de criação sem rede onde o “choque cultural” é promovido enquanto ponto de partida para uma residência de curta duração que resultará em algo de muito imprevisível e autêntico no palco. Esta é também uma nova forma de encarar a criação con-temporânea em tempo real, sem concessões, fórmulas ou predefinições, respondendo em corpo presente ao virtualismo dos dias que correm. Um cruzamento de artistas num território localizado - Centro de Criação de Candoso - com o devido estímulo à construção de utopias sonoras que se configurem nas ideias do amanhã. Experimentar sem limites para transformar o óbvio no surpreendente. Esta é a porta de entrada para um admirável mundo único.

Para a 3ª edição das Conferências PRO, o Westway LAB tem o orgulho de apresentar duas palestras de figuras de relevo na indústria da música indepen-dente internacional: Charles Caldas, da MERLIN, e Helen Smith, da IMPALA. As conferências também apresentam uma forte componente programática em torno da gestão musical: uma plataforma de conheci-mento para managers de Portugal, Espanha e outros gestores internacionais, promovendo a troca de experiências profissionais, organizadas em parceria com a BIME - Bilbao International Music Experience. Painéis sobre novos festivais de música europeus, direitos musicais, edição de música e o trabalho de supervisão musical em trabalhos audiovisuais, assim como debates sobre diversos tópicos de interesse compõem a ordem de trabalhos das Conferências PRO para a edição deste ano.

The challenge is a strong and original one: to join forces to tackle a short-term (perhaps even ephemeral) col-laborative project bringing together Portuguese and international musi-cians. Taking a week to escape from routines, artists will give their minds over to experimentation and to probe more spontaneous ways to compose music. The creative process here is one ‘without a safety net’ where culture shock is the encouraged as a point of departure for a brief artist-in-residency that is bound to result in something rather unpredictable and authentic on stage. This is also a new way to face the creation of music today in real time, without conces-sions, formulas or pre-definitions, in a response that is body-present to the virtualism of today’s world. The intermingling of artists will be con-centrated in one spot – the Centro de Criação de Candoso – with their sights set upon the sound utopias that can be formed in the ideas of tomorrow. This is experimenting without limits in order to transform the obvious into something surpris-ing. Here is the door with which to enter an amazing and unique world.

The conference also features a strong programme component focused on music management: a managers “knowledge” platform for Portuguese, Spanish and other international man-agers to exchange their professional experience(s), organized in partner-ship with BIME - Bilbao International Music Experience. Panels on new European Festivals, music rights, music publishing and the work of music supervisors placing music in audio-visual works, as well as debates on several music hot topics round out this year’s PRO Conference line-up.

Um momento para conhecimento mútuo entre os artistas e o público da cidade num ambiente informal e descontraído, que permite a passagem de informação sobre a experiência de viver Guimarães pelo angulo da criação. Uma semana retratada numa hora de conversa entre artistas, partici-pantes e habitantes locais. A constituição de um corpo de várias partes articuladas de forma orgânica para que o processo de transformação seja total. Não é segredo que todos se entusiasmam com este encontro.

Ivan and The Parazol são uma banda proveniente da Hungria. A batida identitária do grupo remete bem para a contemporaneidade do séc. XXI, bebendo influência da new wave dos anos 60 e 70. O primeiro hit da banda, “Take my Hand”, foi um sucesso nas rádios do país natal, e rapidamente chegou aos blogs de música estrangeira, catapultando a banda para outros horizontes. Depois três vídeo clips e um EP, o álbum de estreia, “Mama don’t you recognize Ivan & The Parazol”, é um trabalho que traduz bem a essência da banda. O som cru, as músicas melódicas, a batida rock’n’roll e todas as coisas que são boas desde o ido ano de 1965, são a impressão digital de Ivan and The Parazol. Conversations on the creative proc-ess with artists and locals gathered together – this is what the Talks at the Westway LAB promote. This is a mo-ment for mutual understanding when performers and the public meet in an informal and relaxed atmosphere which allows for the discussion on what it is like to live in Guimarães as someone in the creative artist-in-residence. The topic will be this week of creation, reflected in a conversa-tion amongst the artists, participants, and locals; it will organically construct a body of many limbs so that the proc-ess of transformation will be total. It should be no surprise that everyone enjoys this group encounter.

Ivan and The Parazol is a band from Hungary. The identifying rhythm of the group is the contemporary groove of the 21st century but with influences coming from 60s and 70s new wave. The band’s first hit, “Take My Hand,” was a success back home in Hungary, so they rapidly came to the attention of the foreign music blogs, catapulting the bands up to the heights. Following three videos and an EP, their debut album, “Mama don’t you recognize Ivan & The Parazol” is a work that ex-presses the essence of the band quite well. The raw sound, the melodic songs, the rock n’ roll beat and ‘all the other good stuff since 1965’ are what make up Ivan and The Parazol. If we only had three words to characterize the group they would be: power, energy, and heat. Here they come!Opening as warm-up acts for Ivan and The Parazol, the CCVF Café Concerto welcomes the work resulting from the artist-in-residencies, which comprise both Portuguese and international artists.

The third edition of the Westway LAB has resolved to extend a chal-lenge to create a new joint work. The idea is to look at the artistic ecosystem of the festival’s host city and challenge a local group of people to prepare a unique type of performance. This year the proposal is one involving the legendary British band, the Membranes, and the Con-vívio Jazz Chorus together on stage. Underlying this performance is the transformation of the music from the Membranes, with the Convívio

Jazz Chorus performing especially written pieces for this singular event. This will be the official opening con-cert for the festival, which promises yet another original and unexpected moment that is surely the calling card of the Westway LAB.

She invites everyone to tuck their bad memories away in the darkest corner of the closet and then set off on a journey which culminates with each one of us becoming his/her own personal hero. Balancing between darkness and light, Sarah rediscovers herself but with a healthy dose of sarcasm. Her most recent

work is markedly contemporary and depicts her personal journey, which meanders along with a rich palette of emotions associated with the dark-est moments of her life, side by side with the brilliance of having found the light once again, and at each occasion when that was just what was needed. Opening as warm-up acts for Sarah P., the CCVF Café Concerto welcomes the work resulting from the artist-in-residencies, which comprise both Portuguese and international artists.

Free fall. Plunging into the earth, into the stone as immense at the sea, into the depths where crystals form. It was in the planet’s core, with the forces of attraction in each stone contrast-ing with its coldness and seeking to break with physical separation that Filho da Mãe retreated to the high choir of the Monastery of Rendufe in Amares dedicated to intense com-munion with the spirit of the Minho province. In “Mergulho” (lit. “Dive”) Rui Carvalho also dissolves into time and space, making his recording per-meable, which prior to that had been something he had stamped as being only of his making – with what he has shared returning to him as mature, melodic, and sweet, in contrast with the tempestuous and reckless incur-sions of times past.

Free fall. Plunging into the earth, into the stone as immense at the sea, into the depths where crystals form. It was in the planet’s core, with the forces of attraction in each stone contrast-ing with its coldness and seeking to break with physical separation that Filho da Mãe retreated to the high choir of the Monastery of Rendufe in Amares dedicated to intense com-munion with the spirit of the Minho province. In “Mergulho” (lit. “Dive”) Rui Carvalho also dissolves into time and space, making his recording per-meable, which prior to that had been something he had stamped as being only of his making – with what he has shared returning to him as mature, melodic, and sweet, in contrast with the tempestuous and reckless incur-sions of times past.

Na exposição “A idade do perigo”, João Grama, artista formado no Ar.Co, sistematiza uma inter-rogação sobre a aproximação entre as entidades humana e animal, relação arcaica e repleta de estranheza, alteridade e reconhecimento. Focando a atenção na figura da armadilha, enquanto artifício que propicia o encontro, João Grama demanda paisagens e lugares longínquos, no mar ou na montanha, no litoral ou no exterior, para refletir sobre a temporalidade e a metafísica da existência.

In the exhibition entitled “A idade do per-igo” (“The age of danger”), João Grama, an artist who studied at Ar.Co, systemizes the inquiry of the closeness between hu-man and animal entities, the archaic and fully unusual relationships of alternation and recognition. Focusing his attention on a type of trap which might serve as a pretense to spark an encounter, João Grama recalls faraway landscapes and places, both at sea or in the mountains, on the shore or on the inland plains, as a way to reflect the temporality and the metaphysics of existence.

Desde a abertura do CIAJG – Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guima-rães, o Serviço Educativo desenvolveu um conjunto de oficinas que aprofun-dam as ideias que sustentam o programa do Centro. Através do programa especial Vai e Vem, continuamos a oferecer às es-colas do concelho de Guimarães a pos-sibilidade de receber estas oficinas em sala de aula - um artista e a sua mala de trabalho propõem abrir portas às primei-ras experiências artísticas ou aprofundar o desejo de criar, instaurando na escola um espaço de experiência e de partilha entre artistas, professores e alunos..

Since the opening of the José de Gui-marães International Center for the Arts (CIAJG), our Educational Services have collaborated on workshops which have taken the concepts which underpin the Center’s mission even further. Via the special program entitled “Vai e Vem” (“Coming and Going”) we continue to of-fer the schools in the Concelho (County) of Guimarães the opportunity to host these workshops in the classroom. Here, an art-ist and his/her work case will entice the students to embark on their first artistic endeavor and to respond to their desire to create something by establishing a space within the school where artists, teachers, and students can share their experiences.

Para cada imagem, associado ao método de captação fotográfico tradicional foi desenvolvido um processo de montagem que articula duas fotografias de dois lugares distintos, da mesma cidade, a partir de uma linha horizontal-comum. De-monstrando interesse na aproximação entre as duas partes de cada uma das imagens, o presente exercício pretende reconhecer a verdadeira dimensão social e patrimonial da própria cidade. “Tudo tem importância na relação do espaço – as formas em si, a relação entre elas, o espaço que as limita.” (Távora, 1962).

The photographs on display were shot during a series of walks taken in the city of Guimarães in April and May 2013. Reflecting on the heritage of the city’s monuments, the exhibit is evidence of the close relationships that exist between the different types of architectural typologies. Each image was taken using tradi-tional photographical methods and then a process of montage was applied to articulate two photographs of two separate locations in the same city by using a common horizontal line. Demonstrating the interest to close the closeness between the two parts of each one of the images, the present exercise seeks to recognize the true social and heritage dimension of the city. “Everything has importance in relation to space – the forms in and of themselves, the relationship between them, and the space which delimits them.” (Távora, 1962)

“Trees Outside the Academy” repete-se em 2016, tal como em 2014, e está associado a práticas de grupo coletivas, por vezes mas nem sempre colaborativas, mas com uma ramificação co-mum, agrupada mais ou menos formalmente, resultando daí uma prática característica e de confronto, não deixando de transmitir estéticas claramente individuais. Partindo de realidades paralelas, nestes coletivos são indissociáveis a música, fotografia, pintura, desenho, cinema, vídeo, teatro, performance, instalação, design e crítica que coabitam no mesmo espaço e numa prática comum.

“Trees Outside the Academy” returns in 2016, and just as in 2014, it will focus on bringing groups together, ones which may not always cross paths but which have something in common when coming together more or less formally, with the result being a challenging encounter that does not hinder the display of anyone’s individual aesthetic. Stepping off from the point of valid parallel realities, these collectives will assume the fields of music, photography, painting, drawing, cinema, video, theatre, performance, exhibits, design, and critiques which co-inhabit within the same space and the same expression.

A exposição “Composições” é uma instalação fotográfica de Laura San Segundo, fotógrafa em ascensão natural de Madrid, premiada já por diversas vezes pelo seu trabalho singular. Esta exposição mostra dois momentos distintos do seu trabalho, nunca antes postos em diálogo: o primeiro, com duas séries de trabalho - ‘Paralelo’, 2013 e ‘Short Series’, 2014 - que, embo-ra distintas, partilham um processo muito semelhante na sua estrutura e sequência: através do diálogo entre diferentes ima-gens que partilham o mesmo universo estético ou concetual, explorando o facto de a leitura de uma imagem poder ser com-pletamente alterada ou redirecionada, estando ela isolada, ou em relação com outra imagem; o segundo corpo de trabalho trata a fotografia de natureza morta, com as séries ‘A Study’, 2014, ‘Photographs with Vegetables’, 2014 e ‘Giorgio Moran-di’, 2013. Estas naturezas revelam uma abordagem conceptual com fortes referências à história da pintura. Tendo como mo-delo objetos e comida, estas imagens narram o presente atra-vés de uma estética associada ao passado.

The exhibition “Composições” (“Compositions”) is a display of photography by up-and-coming photographer Laura San Segundo, a Madrid native who has received repeated praised for her singular work. This exhibition shows two distinct mo-ments of her work, never before placed together in a dialogue: the first is a combination of two series of works – ‘Paralelo’ from 2013 and ‘Short Series’ from 2014. Although distinct, they share a very similar process in the structure and sequence through the dialogue between different images which share the same aesthetic and conceptual universe, exploring the fact that a reading of an image can be completely altered or redirected, isolated or placed in relationship with another image. The second body of work deals with still life photography with the series, ‘A Study’ from 2014, ‘Photographs with Vegetables’ from 2014 e ‘Giorgio Morandi’ from 2013. These still life images reveal a conceptual approach with strong references made to the history of painting. Using objects and food as models, these images are a narration of the present through their aesthetic associated with the past.
