ANSWER KEY

Appendix 1 Model answer Today’s families are generally much smaller than families during our fore father’s time. A typical family today consists of four or five members, including the parents. If I were given a choice, I would prefer to be in a big family. This is because I would be a happier person. My siblings can be my playmates both at home and outside. I will not be so lonely. On the other hand, being the only child will make feel lonely. I have to look for playmates outside of my home. Moreover, my older siblings will help me in my studies if I have problems. Besides, I learn to practice the ‘give and take’ attitude with my brothers and sisters. This helps me develop a caring and understanding character during my formative years. In contrast, a person who is raised from a small family tends to be self–centered and selfish. At home, he or she does not have to share their things with others. An only child might be spoilt for he or she might expect others to give in to him or her all the time. I know that in a big family, the parents’ attention for their children has to be divided among all of them. But that does not mean that they lack parental love. In fact, when parents give equal attention to my siblings and me, it promotes a sense of fairness and equality. This is a quality I can always carry and practice in my life. Despite having to share my things with my brothers and sisters, I still think that life is happier and meaningful in a big family. I am not lonely, I am a better person and life is certainly more purposeful.

ANSWER KEY

Appendix 1Model answer

I attended the Save Water Campaign organized by the local authorities. Here is what I learned at the campaign about how we can save water at home and in school. One way to save water is to avoid wasting it. Turn off the tap when you have finished washing your hands. Don’t leave the tap running when you don’t need the water. A lot of water is wasted this way. We should also repair all leaking taps and pipes in our homes and other buildings. People are not aware of how much water is wasted due to leaking taps. When washing cars, it is better to collect water in a bucket and then use a scoop to pour on the car. Using a hose to wash the car wastes a lot of water. It is very important to follow the Do’s and Don’ts of Saving Water because we need to save water. We need water to live. If we don’t have enough clean water, we will suffer. Therefore, it is the duty of every person to save water and not waste it.

ANSWER KEY

The first thing Kassim should do is add some cooking oil into the wok and heat it up. Next, he needs to add a pinch of salt into the oil to prevent splashing. Then he must add in the small sliced potato cubes followed by the sliced onions. He should fry the potatoes until they turn brown and the sliced onions become slightly crispy. If he has a twin stove, he can also add some oil into a frying pan and add a pinch of salt to it to fry the potato chips while the ingredients in the wok are being fried.

Once the small sliced potato cubes and onions are fried nicely, he should add the cooked rice into the wok and mix nicely. Then, Kassim should add some soy sauce and stir well. He should not forget to remove the potato chips from the frying pan and fry an egg in the same oil. (for a richer taste).

Once everything is cooked, Kassim can transfer the fried rice into a plate; then garnish it with the fried chips and egg. If he wants, he may add a lighter spread of butter or margarine for richer taste.

The pie chart above shows the enrolment of students attending classes for six subjects at Perfect Tuition Centre. The enrolment is shown in percentages. Below is a report of the enrolment for the six subjects at the tuition centre. The report describes the trend for enrolment of classes at the tuition centre.

A. Identify the Present Tense and Present Continuous Tense used in the report. Underline the Present Tense once and the Present Continuous Tense twice.

The pie chart shows the enrolment of students for the six subjects at Perfect Tuition Centre.

From the chart, we know that the two subjects with the highest enrolment are the two main languages, Bahasa Malaysia and English. The total enrolment for these two subjects is 50%. This is because the subjects are compulsory and many students are weak in them. Recently, English has increased in importance with the emphasis by the Government. A good command of English is necessary to join the job market.

The other subjects like Mathematics, Science and Commerce have an enrolment of 15% each. Many students face difficulty in studying these subjects too. Moreover, with today’s emphasis on technology and industry, Mathematics and Science subjects are increasing in importance.

The subject with lowest enrolment is Art, which is only 5%. This is not surprising for only students who want to pursue a career in Art will take this subject seriously. It is encouraging to see a certain level of diversity in students’ interest at a young age itself.

The enrolment of students at Perfect Tuition Centre depends on the importance and level of difficulty of the subject. Enrolment is higher if the subject is either important or difficult.

TASK (APPENDIX 1)

The pie chart shows the type of movies watched by the Tan’s family members. Like other movie goers, they watch popular science fiction and action-packed movies. From the chart we know that, the most watched movies among them is the science fiction which makes up 35%. This means that out of three movies they watched, one is a science fiction movie. The trend now is science fiction movies which pull crowds due to their special effects and sound system. The children and parents in the family like to watch them. Science fiction movies are followed closely by the action-packed type of movies which are popular among both the ole and young. Such movies are seldom boring. Together with science fiction movies, the total is more than 50% of the movies watched. Detective thrillers probably appeal more to the father and sons, accounting for only 15% of the movies watched. The two categories that showed the lowest percentage are comedy and family drama which only amounts to 5%. Probably, family drama movies are watched only by the mother. It seldom appeals to the young. Comedy, on the other hand, may not appeal to the Tan’s family. The movies watched by the Tan’s family members are indicative of many other movie goers. Science fiction and action-packed movies are often box office hits.

Luckily, we had expected the flood. So we moved our electrical gadgets upstairs. We had previously saved our important documents and valuables in the bank. Luckily, that was taken care off.

By noon, we had to evacuate to higher ground. The Town Council sent boats to bring us to a safer place. That night, we stayed at a community hall that was located on higher ground. I did not realize how kind people were till this flood. You should see the donations pouring in. There were donations of blankets, clothes, and even money to help us. It is during such crises that nice and compassionate people come forward to help.

When the water subsided, we moved back to our home. Now, my family and I are still cleaning the house which is full of mud. It is a lot of hard work.

How about your place? Was it flooded during the heavy rain? I have to stop now for I still have to scrub the mud off in my bedroom walls. ________________________.

Dear Linda,

How are you? I hope this letter finds you in the best health. I also hope that you will forgive me for taking a longer time to reply your letter. I have been involved in my school’s environment club flood prevention project last week.

The project was held for two days aiming to build an embankment along a stretch of Gum Gum River. 40 members of the club were involved in the project.

Our club members were divided into teams. Team One took part in mixing cement and sand. Team Two helped to cement the stones together. Team Three was in charge of refreshments for the participants. Sixty metres of the embankment was completed during the two days. The members of the club were happy that they had the opportunity to help in a project to prevent future floods.

How about you? Have you ever joined any interesting projects organised by your club? Goodbye and take care.

a good turn up at my speech. It is an important topic on ________________________.

How long our teeth last depends on how well we care for our teeth. Proper dental

care should start from the moment children start teething. This is because milk teeth will

affect the formation of permanent teeth later. Parents should teach the young child to

clean their teeth by using a wet cloth or cotton bud to rub on their teeth twice a day. When

the child is slightly older, he or she can use a tiny toothbrush with soft nylon tufts.

As important are good eating habits are to us, dental check-ups, regular and

proper brushing are essential too. Eat more food that is good for our teeth such as fruits

and fish. Avoid sweet food like chocolates and ice cream.

Regular six-month check-ups are best way to prevent dental problems. The longer

we wait the more likely out teeth will become worse.

So remember to take a good care of your teeth. Taking care of your teeth is

actually taking care of your health, body and looks. Smiling with clean white teeth gives

others a good impression of you. So, I would like to _____________________. At this

ANSWER KEY

Good morning, teachers and fellow students. Today is a special day for teachers for it is Teacher’s Day. It is a day we put aside specially to thank out teachers for all the hard work and dedication they have put into their careers. Of course, we take every opportunity to thank our teachers. But today is a special day when we really show our appreciation for our teachers.

Nobody can deny that teaching is an honorable profession. Our teachers are doing an excellent job of teaching us. So we wish to thank them today for their hard work and effort.

I am sure you all know of teachers who stay back to help the weak students in their studies. And these students have benefited from their teacher’s diligence, care and concern. Our way of thanking them is by working hard.

After this assembly, we will all present roses to all our class teachers. This is followed by parties we have organised for them. A lot of food has been prepared for all of us. They are our teachers’ favourite dishes. Teacher’s Day is a day of appreciation, joy and fun. So there will be games, singing and dancing.

Teachers have worked very hard for us. So let’s go and meet our teachers now and say a big ‘Thank you ’ to them. Thank you for making this day possible.
