Dear Indra,

How are you? I hope you are fine. My family and I are doing just fine.

My school celebrated Teacher’s Day last week. Activities on that day

started at 7.30 a.m. First we had an assembly in the school hall. The principal

and all the teachers were seated on a colourful and nicely decorated stage.

The school principal gave a speech. He reminded students to study

hard and develop good qualities. This is our way of showing our appreciation to

our teachers for their hard work. At the end of the speech, we clapped loudly to

show our appreciation to our teachers.

Then the Head Prefect delivered a speech. He thanked the teachers for

their endurance and compassion all this while. He also recited a poem entitled

“KASIH GURU”. This was followed by our class parties. At the parties, we ate

the food that we had brought such as fried noodles, cakes and sandwiches. We

also sang, danced and played indoor games. I enjoyed playing the ‘Musical

Chairs’.

After 12 noon, some outdoor games were played. That was the most

exciting event of the day. Teachers and students played various interesting

games like sack race, football, throwing balloons and other relay games. The

students won most of the games. The final event was a concert. Popular songs

were rendered by some students and traditional dances were performed by the

Cultural Club. By then, we were all tired but happy because we had had a

whale of a time that day.

How about the Teacher’s Day celebration in your school? Do tell me

about it in your next letter. Take care and bye.

Mind Mapping is a way of creating pictures that show ideas in the same

way that they are represented in your brain.

You see your brain uses words, pictures, numbers, logic, rhythm, color

and spatial awareness to build up unique pictures of information.

The ideas are linked together in a way that makes it easy to understand

SAMPLE ANSWER:

Good morning to the principal, teachers and my fellow students. I amthe president of the Junior Environment Club of our school and I have beeninvited to give a speech on how to keep our school clean.

First and foremost, we should keep our classrooms clean. We mustsweep our classrooms every day and always keep our waste paperbaskets empty. We must also remember to wipe the windows daily. Weshould not litter everywhere in our classrooms. Rubbish must be throwninto waste paper baskets. We should not let rubbish overflow the wastepaper baskets as it will be an eyesore.

In addition we must remember to flush toilets after using them. It isvery unhealthy to leave toilets not flushed as they will emit a stench. Wemust not throw objects into toilet bowls. This will cause the toilet bowlsto clog. We should also keep the sinks clean by not throwing tissuesand rubbish into them. After all, we are the ones who use the toilets sowe should not dirty them.

Besides this, we should also put all used plates and glasses inproper places such as in basins provided in the canteen. We should notleave food scraps everywhere as it will attract flies. Moreover usedplates and glasses should not be left on the canteen tables. In this waywe can help to keep the canteen clean.

That is all I have to say this morning. I hope that all of you willcooperate and keep our beloved school clean. Thank you.

PRACTICE 2:-Read the passage below and answer the question that follows:

“Hello.’ ‘How are you?’ ‘Good morning,’ ‘Have you eaten yet?’ ‘Where are yougoing?’ These are greetings which people use when they meet each other. Theseare common greetings used by people.

A greeting is a way of being friendly to someone. It is not necessary todescribe your true condition or feeling. In fact, people reply to the questions with afixed expression such as ‘I’m fine, thanks’ or ‘I’m very well.’ It is a way of beingpolite where you address them when you meet them unexpectedly. It is also a wayof starting a conversation. People usually nod their head or just smile when they donot intend to start a conversation.

Usually a question is used as a greeting: ‘Where are you going?’ How’severything with you?” But questions like these are not real questions. They do notrequire a full answer or even a true one.

A greeting is usually followed by ‘small talk’. Small talk means the little thingswe talk about at the start of a conversation. People often talk about suitable topicsfor small talks such as the weather as it is a safe topic compared to religion orpolitics. Thus, this makes meeting people easier and more comfortable.

ANSWER KEY FOR SUMMARY PRACTICE 1 (PMR 2008)

In camping, follow these golden rules. Camp on bare ground where possible. The

campsite should be away from trails and dead trees. Avoid slopes, high ridges and wet sites. Do

not choose campsites that are below flood level or are highly frequented by wildlife. Set up camp

as early as possible and familiarize yourself with the surroundings. This helps to prevent injuries

from moving about in the dark at night. Make sure that you bring enough food to last the trip. The

food can be fresh, dried or canned. Avoid bringing any food with a strong smell.

You will need at least two litres of water per person per day. Use water from a natural

source such as a spring. Make sure all water is boiled to eliminate bacteria and contamination.

Build your fire away from the tent. Do not cook inside the tent, even if you are using a gas

canister. Never burn rubbish, especially plastic, as the fumes are toxic. Make sure the fire is

completely put out before you break camp.

Do remember your camp etiquette. The campsite is part of nature. In areas of sensitive

environments, vegetation takes a long time to recover, so no holes should be dug around there at

all.

Write a summary on the rules of camping.
