BURIED IN LANEWAYSAnother act has been added to the Laneway Festival line-up for 2013. A Place to Bury Strangers will be joining the already exciting line-up. A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called “the loudest band in New York”. This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called “loud” rock and roll that’s out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. Laneway are announcing the last of their line-up every Monday over the next three weeks. Each Monday at 9am NZ Time, a new act will be announced - then two acts on Mon 03 Dec.

After suffering from “serious stomach complications” last year (gas, anyone?), Baths has made good and are back for two shows this month. The music project of electronic musician Will Wiesenfeld, Baths, is synthetics, rhythmic thuds, ghostly falsetto and more clever audio tricks you can lose your mind to.
The man with the hat. It’s been 20 years since he made his mark with breakthrough single ‘Isabelle’ and he’s never looked back. Greg is hosting a 20th Anniversary tour. He’s joined by stellar band members (literally, Kurt Shanks formerly of Stellar* is joining him) and will debut his 10th studio album.
Sean Pompey, better known as Smoke DZA, is a hip-hop artist from Harlem. Fun fact: Smoke DZA decided on his moniker after being influenced by Smokey from the movie Friday. The acronym DZA stands for “Dream Zone Achieved”. He’s worked with Wiz Khalifa and is influenced by Jay-Z and The Notorious Big.
Kids no more, the once heavy synth group has found the perfect balance and showcases an all new sound, with even catchier hooks. The boys have gone for more of a bubblegum-love sound, with their singles ‘LaLa’ and ‘Tucan’ already invading the airwaves. With support from Loui the Zu.
They may look like whiter versions of Home Brew, but these guys have been kicking it old school since way back when and before bringing goats on the red carpet was okay. The award-winning hip-hop group has been at the centre of Australia’s scene for nearly two decades, releasing their first EP in 1997.
Looking questionably disheveled and with an intensity that suggests he’s a man of few words, with stories locked away in that brain, Delaney Davidson will be at Southbound Records playing some songs and signing their new album Sad But True - The Secret History Of Country Music Songwriting Vol .
Robin Hinkley’s solo project, created while other members of his band Good Laika were busy starting a family, has spawned its own offspring: an album. The album’s gestation was not without its dramas, including a day of running away from the police in Mumbai during an attempt at filming a music video.
Now they are VNZMA winners, Six60 can add yet another awesome accolade to their already massive collection, including triple platinum sales of their debut album. The versatile band is playing with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in a one-off show marking one year since their explosive first CD.
The Chicago techno legend returns! Spinning records since the age of eleven, Gene is one of the most accomplished DJ/producer in house music, releasing hot dance anthems on his label. Bringing the (formerly) sweaty, sexy summer vibe from the US of A (prior to Superstorm Sandy), he’ll get you moving.
Don’t let that one annoying song about fireflies annoy you – Adam Young is an incredibly talented musician and ethereal, drug-induced sounding pop is his speciality. He’s also branching out with a current top 20 hit featuring Carly Rae Jepsen. If all of his sounds like a sugary overload, this is not the gig for you.

Are solo projects from musicians in established musical acts doomed to be mirror images of their day jobs, or is it an opportunity to do something completely out of the blue that never have worked in their other bands? Banks, from Interpol front man Paul Banks, answers that question with another question: can’t it be both? Banks (the album) is a statement in which Banks (the man) embraces his own musical identity as a detached entity from Interpol and it yields some interesting results. The clue is in the album’s title and the fact that he is no longer using the Julian Plenti pseudonym, having previously released an album and an EP under that name over the past few years. This change has allowed him to finally take center stage with no fake name to protect him from the slings and arrows of notoriety. For now at least Banks is running his ambitions up the flagpole to see who salutes.
There are certainly some Interpol-flavoured songs here (such as ‘Over My Shoulder and ‘Paid For That’) but the more familiar concepts are presented in a new light, which only Banks by himself could muster. Guitar driven tunes carry a new cinematic edge that elevates them above the New York industrial chic of Turn On The Bright Lights. Banks is perhaps giving us a glimpse into his own CD collection with every song that passes. U2, Joy Division, and Kraftwerk, make for strange bedfellows but manage to co-exist on lead single ‘The Base’. Electric, electronic, and organic instruments mesh together to make
a dizzying tapestry of soul-baring tales. The instrumental ‘Lisbon’ is a breath of fresh air amidst the gloom – a meandering piece that evokes the technicolour landscapes of classic cinema and gives the audience a small break from Banks’ claustrophobic drone.
Ultimately, Banks is an excursion into one man’s mind, heart, and soul. The strongest moments come when he is less fussed about densely layered arrangements and let us slip right to the core of the songs. ‘Summertime Is Gone’ closes the album in a gorgeous, heart-warming fashion. While it might be an uneven album there is plenty in there for Interpol fans to love and for everyone else to wonder at and, perhaps, even love too.

Auckland rock band Mile High is releasing their video for upcoming single ‘The Past’ with friends Ekko Park and guests. The single with its hypnotising rhythm showcases the band’s abilities as songwriters while maintaining that signature sound. Come and be part of the energy and the atmosphere as they drop their new material.
No-one wants to get close to a Grizzly, let alone listen to one play the guitar. Gotcha: it’s actually a New York quartet, who is bringing their harmony-soaked chamber-pop to New Zealand for the first time in their career. The band featured on the soundtrack for the world’s most depressing Ryan Gosling movie Blue Valentine.
Wellington’s Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band is on tour this November. Having played earlier this year to a sold out crowd with the Richter City Rebels, expect another raucous evening as the Roseneath boys pound the dance floor with their infectious boogie and bring the party to their hometown again.
If you can’t make Wellington Zinefest come celebrate the launch of issue 11 of PRESENCE magazine by seeing Randa perform at Golden Dawn and get a free mag. The zine features Porcelaintoy, Dear Times Waste, Rackets, comedic duo Stop Being a Pud, artist Liam Gerrard, fashion designer Georgia Alice and comic artist Ellen Moorhead.

Former pop star of short-lived TrueBliss fame Carly Binding is finding better success with her one-woman musical. It tells the story of an ordinary English girl, whose journey takes her to the US in search of love. Her romantic adventures begin in New York, lead her to Hollywood.
Relive the greatest rock albums of all time from England’s cult runaway success in the stunning planetarium theatre. Sit back and revel in the surround sound with psychedelic images projected on the dome ceiling to go along with the music.
The age-old story of a young down-and-out man finding success after an intergalactic plant lands in his hands is a tale as old as time. The Auckland Theatre Company’s rendition of the quirky musical hit is an outstanding show, with a cast of talented singers and one very destructive plant puppet.

Everything you love about street markets – designer clothes, original art – mixed with aspects of a school fair – goats and ponies. It’s all in the same place: the Grey Lynn Festival. Bringing community groups, musicians and performers together to put on a unique day out. It’s grass roots support for members of the community at its best.
“Zines” or “fanzines” are self-published magazines created to highlight niche interests or oddball obsessions, from fanfiction, activism and craft to creative writing and music scenes. The festival brings the creative minds behind the zines to one place and showcases their work.
Gustav Mahler’s tantalising Seventh Symphony is complex and continues to fascinate musicians and audiences. The magical score is the perfect companion for Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins. What could have been saccharine awards-baiting B.S. becomes humane, life-affirming drama about far more than say, a rich regent with a stutter.
John Hawkes has never been more watchable or witty as he is here, portraying Mark O’Brien – the Californian writer, paralysed by polio. A 38-year-old virgin, O’Brien hires Cheryl, a sex surrogate, played by Helen Hunt.
To say the two leads are “brave” may risk sounding condescending, but they are. Many actors might think twice about the film’s frank portrayal of sex and disability, but Hunt and Hawkes deliver wry, witty and wise performances. As do the entire cast, especially William H Macy as O’Brien’s surprisingly open-minded Catholic priest.
Writer/director Ben Lewin is a polio survivor himself, which may go some way to explaining how he pulls off
the delicate balance between maudlin sentimentality and moving drama. The film benefits from a first-rate and often very funny script and a committed cast delivering pitch perfect performances that, like Marco Beltrami’s score and Geoffrey Simpson’s cinematography, shirk attention- seeking theatrics for subtle honesty.
The Sessions is moving, funny, thought-provoking adult drama that manages to impress without ever beating you over the head telling you what to think. As O’Brien says at one point, “I can be a bit time consuming, but I’m worth the trouble.” And this tale of his life sure is, especially for those that like less bang and more human behaviour for their buck.

THE SESSIONS
FILM OF ThE WEEK
oN SCrEEN
It’s not the life of troubled TV star Michael Barrymore, or about the former wild child Drew Barrymore, it’s about Shakespearean actor John Barrymore, played by Oscar award-winner Christopher Plummer. Set in 1942, the film takes place on the stage of a Broadway theatre where the actor is struggling to recreate his performance in the title role of Richard III.
When he’s not being tickled by thousands/millions of children (gross), Elmo is just a puppet at the hands of Kevin Clash – a man who went from a modest life in Baltimore to becoming the hands behind one of the world’s most recognisable characters, yet you wouldn’t know his face. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg.
One of Rowan Atkinson’s not-so finest moments (in my humble opinion, along with Johnny English), the bumbling Bean is back on our TV screens. Approaching the festive season, it is Christmas time and Mr Bean plans to celebrate the holiday with his best friend: a stuffed bear. As predicted, things go from awkward to worse.
Bjork gives an award-winning performance (no, not for wearing a swan) as Selma. She works day and night to save her son from the same disease she suffers from, a disease that inevitably will make her blind, but Selma has the energy to live because of her secret – she loves musicals. Directed by Lars von Trier.
They were Hungry Like the Wolf and captured many Girls on Film, but who were pop icons Duran Duran? And what caused people to go gaga over their perfectly coiffed hair? In 2000, only Nick and Simon remained and it was all or nothing when the five reformed. Take a look behind the scenes.
Charles Manson: one of history’s most infamous killers. The Barker Ranch, where Charles and his “family” once lived is also the home of many stories that suggest young people who become disenchanted with the quasi-commune tried to get out, but they were never to be seen again. Follow Sgt Paul Dostie as he tries to find out what happened.

It’s never going to get the certified health tick, but it will get the taste tick. Sal’s isn’t just another pizza: it’s an experience. So go try it for yourself.

Step inside a pub more English than an English pub. With that old oak décor feel to it, British mementos and images all over the walls, and a great serving of pub meals – and we mean hearty three courses here – it’ll be like home away from home for our visitors. And they do a mean pub quiz.
If you have a certain passion for a tipple of wine, this is the place for you. Specialising in eclectic wines by the glass or bottle, paired with gourmet pizza. Recline on sumptuous leather couches by an open fireplace with intimate laid-back jazz in the background.

When they aren’t serving up beers you’ve probably never heard of (and some you would have, of course), they are playing music to blow your mind. Puppies is the new kid on the block, hoping to make a drastic change to the way bands are showcased in the music scene. It’s an intimate setting which home two shows a night: one to get the night started and another to send you off into the wee hours. They have ridiculously cheap drinks specials – so cheap, I don’t want to even mention them to here in fear of jinxing it! Not to mention the hipster-friendly bar staff know the ins and outs of their zone, so don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation between songs.

It dIdn’t seem possible that Brooklyn art-rockers Grizzly Bear could top their brilliant Veckatimest, but one listen to their fourth studio effort, Shields, has definitely put paid to any claim they’d done their dash.
the box of tricks is used more judiciously this time, producing a direct and open feeling; stripping away the dreamy aura of some of their past efforts. With a blend of baroque sway, starbursts of guitar, and curtains of synth and psychedelic folk, the Grizzlys are sonic juggernauts and once again this acclaimed outfit is headed our way this month for two nights (Wellington and Auckland on nov 20 and 21).
they started as a solo project for ed droste, but soon morphed into a full band of collaborators with their first album, recorded for famed english electro label Warp Records. It was no surprise that droste should grow up a musician – his grandfather was the head of Harvard’s music department for over 40 years, his aunt is a concert cellist, and his mother a music teacher. Co-writer daniel Rossen was nurtured on jazz guitar, whilst the rest of the band also had a heavy influence of neil Young and stephen stills in their infant ears.
Although droste had begun recording under the moniker in early 2002, it was a bad break-up that found him reaching for the guitar as therapy. “so it became this little home project,” he told me on their previous Kiwi stopover. “I thought this is fun, I’m just going to call this stuff ‘Grizzly Bear’. I didn’t even know about Animal Collective. I initially called my ‘band’ Brooklyn Vegan and ‘Grizzly Bear’ was the resulting project.”
Finally, Christopher Bear “joined” Grizzly Bear by helping with Horn of Plenty recordings, but by release time the group had grown to include Bear’s friend Chris taylor (initially their arranger and Rossen as a second singer-guitarist for the live shows).
After a solid six month tour, Yellow House was in production, recorded in droste’s childhood home in massachusetts. It was here that taylor’s space-centric production contributed to the great expanses heard in their later sound.
“He [taylor] sticks a microphone at the top of the stairwell and had the amp in the other place and recorded a really distant, hot signal, with heaps of white noise to go with it,” droste had noted when asked about the song ‘Coke machine Glow’.
Although Yellow House was well-received, the band’s arrival on the pop-cultural consciousness was more of a slow trickle, coming not with an album or single, but between LPs.
tours with tV on the Radio (2006), Feist (2007) and Radiohead (2008) exposed them to a broad range of listeners. “It was really amazing and surreal,” droste gushed to Pitchfork.com about their Radiohead shows. “I can barely believe it happened. I don’t have any contact with any of them. All I have is a few digital pictures and people being like, ‘Yup, that happened.’ It was kind of a dream come true for us, to play in front of that many people.”
subsequent appearances with Paul simon and on Letterman, Conan, and Craig Ferguson didn’t hurt. then there was their third effort: Veckatimest. Like its predecessor, Veckatimest was a huge evolutionary step and a glorious, orchestral pop explosion of grand melody juxtaposed by tiny details. It was hailed by everyone in the intranet and printed world as the album of the year.
With the cross-cultural crossover complete Veckatimest – which probably peaked when Jay-Z and Beyoncé came to an outdoor summer concert in new York in 2009 – Grizzly Bear toured endlessly before finally landing in a disused airfield for an undisclosed period of time.
taylor debuted side-project Cant (Dreams Come True) and produced the morning Benders and twin shadow (amongst many others), and Rossen released a solo LP, Silent Hour/Golden Mile. earlier this year, they were finally back with shields, initially announced without a title.
this record is a darker; “proggy” opus that stands clear of the former harmonic, woodland pop, but still is drowning in layers so thick on Jackson Pollock could interpret a way out. On stage the drama and sonic experience promises to overwhelm and delight. Grizzly Bear will be a band not to miss!

CaLL oF DuTY. I’m not sure I need to write any more than that to get people’s attention these days. this game is going to sell like hotcakes in a Weight Watchers convention no matter what I say. It is, after all, less “a” first person shooter and more “the” first person shooter; every iteration outsells the one before, breaking numerous records on its way to the top of the charts each and every year.
With every iteration I try to find a way to critique the franchise and, immediately after watching the first trailer earlier this year, I was already rolling my eyes. How much more of this ridiculous, over the top michael Bay-esque military propaganda can we take? the guys at treyarch seem to be thinking ‘a lot more’. And I’m surprised to say, Black ops II takes the action to a whole new level... and it’s for the best.
Like previous Call of Duty titles, Black ops II is set in various locations around the globe. Our first look at the game took place in downtown Los Angeles, where the city is under siege and the President of the United states is in perilous danger.
the sheer scale and attention to detail in the game is overwhelming. entire buildings will come crashing down in front of you and you’ll grimace with every bullet and grenade that thunders past your lug-holes. the soundtrack adds to all of this impact too, with a deep bassy riff (that reminded me of the movie Inception) echoing over the top of the action.
the LA mission ended with a jet fighter chase scene above the crumbling city, weaving in between buildings and shooting down enemy fighters and drones with missiles and cannons. We’ve seen planes before in CoD, but this sequence felt like a completely new game in its own right.
Black ops II seems to capture that real sense of a war zone perfectly. Granted, a lot of it felt similar to previous Call of Duty titles, but I doubt many fans of the series will mind. the new settings, including a confined shipping port level in singapore, will probably be enough for most players just looking for new maps to explore and rack kills up.
What impressed me most about Black ops II, however, was the new strike Force missions. In them, players can activate something called Overwatch mode, which gives you an elevated 3d viewpoint of the battlefield. From here you can see friendly units in green and enemy units in red, and get an overview of the action. You can then order your squads and units into position, like pawns in a chess game, to gain a strategic advantage. But more impressively, you can select any unit and take control of them via the traditional first-person view.
this includes any friendly unit on the battlefield; for example, you could move a squad behind a building and then take control of a soldier on the opposite side to flank with. You can even take control of non-human units, including the numerous drones and military machines currently deployed. If you die while in control of a unit, you can either re-enter Overview mode or be automatically assigned to a nearby unit to continue the fight.
despite Call of Duty’s first-person shooter mantra, players can play an entire strike Force mission without shooting a gun. Instead, they can dictate their forces from Overwatch mode toward victory. It’s a remarkable piece of programming and a genius addition to the franchise. It also gives Black ops II a whole new replay value, where you can switch up the action and play as a single soldier, or any combination of units, to complete a mission.
I thought I would be over Call of Duty by now, but it’s clear that Black ops II still has more to offer. Just how much, and whether it ultimately works inside the traditional Call of Duty framework, is something we’ll find out soon; Call of Duty: Black ops II releases for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC on november 13th, with a Wii U version likely to drop later this year.

have you played LittleBigPlanet before? It doesn’t matter, because this is a karting game. We’ve all played the like: you get a cute kart and race around a track covered in power-ups and traps. This new game, however, has got Sackboy in it...
His bobbling little head and propensity for crazy outfits suddenly make this game seems a lot more fun. And, of course, you can modify your karts in a similar fashion to Sackboy.
Just like in LBP, in each level there are large bubbles with prizes in them. These are decorative elements such as new fabric or stickers. And just like in LBP you can use them to decorate your cardboard pod house, Sackboy himself, or Sackboy’s kart.
The karts are made from cardboard, balloons, dinosaurs and tin, and all of the crafty things you’d expect from the LBP world. Each element of the kart can be changed: steering wheel, seat, and the wheels. There’s something cool about driving a hovering dinosaur with sushi maki rolls as hover jets.
As well as the competitive multiplayer racing you’d expect, there is also a story mode, once again narrated by Stephen Fry. I could listen to his dulcet tones all day, though after a while I found the cutesy language a bit much. Sometimes you forget that LBP really is aimed at kids.
The story’s main plot is that the bad guys are stealing all of the pieces of “Imagiverse” and no-one is fast enough to stop them. No-one, but you (as described in a ridiculously cute intro movie). So you travel to each of the Imagiverse’s worlds, stopping the horrible evil racers by beating them in races.
As always, LBP is better with friends and you can be accompanied through the story mode with a another player. I prefer local multiplayer as a general rule and thankfully LBP offers split screen racing as it should be. Cooperative racing is fun but after a level is completed the “versus” version of the same track is unlocked so you go head to head with your friends.
When the dust had settled, the stupid grin on my face, the uncontrollable laughs and the humming of the music long after the race was over; all proved that his game is fun right through to its adorable little core. Recommended.

A LOt CAn happen in a year – just ask six60 lead singer matiu Walters. After releasing their debut album in October 2011 – which went to number one in the new Zealand charts and was certified gold in its first week – the album eventually went triple platinum (with two double platinum singles).
the Auckland-based group has spent most of the year completing their first overseas tour of the UK and europe with great success, and to top it off, they won six tui awards this month at the Vodafone new Zealand music Awards – including Best Group and single of the Year.
“I am proud, but I wish it was quadruple platinum,” laughs matiu. “to say we are content where we are would be a lie.”
He’s not kidding. Although the group has been “full go ahead” since they released their self-titled debut, matiu says the band’s constant need to push themselves in bigger and better directions is why their current success isn’t enough.
Cooped up inside on one of Auckland’s sunnier spring days isn’t a curse for the frontman as hard work needs to be done. For one, there’s the pressure of album number two looming over his head, which he says is “so difficult because you have your whole life to write your first album and then a year and a half to write your second”.
He also has a dream concert to prepare for: the pairing of six60 with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO). It’s something that came about by chance, but matiu says it has always been “a dream of mine to have our music scored and played by an orchestra” since the group formed in 2006.
“A lot of our songs when we wrote them lent themselves to having an orchestra. now with the success of the first album, we had this opportunity.”
the idea came about when the band met record producer and musician Jaz Coleman in Prague during their european tour. He put them onto composer Peter scholes. It was a long process of going through arrangements and concepts until six60 found a way to incorporate the orchestra. the last thing the band wanted was the classical sound as just a backing track – the music needed to be fully integrated, taking over and backing off at the right moments.
Although he readily admits a pop/rock group playing with classically trained performers is not groundbreaking stuff – think metallica’s S&M or serj tankian’s work with the APO – matiu explains that their three-part format offers a new twist. the show features a “Live & massive” section (with typical six60 gusto and energy), an “Unplugged” acoustic set, as well as a section with the APO.
On first listen of their number-one hit single ‘Rise Up’, you could be forgiven for wondering how the orchestra will work with six60 s electronic sound, but any long-time listener will know that the band’s sound – which features an eclectic use of genres from rock ‘n’ roll to roots – is perfectly suited to be paired with strings and brass.
One of their lesser-known singles from their debut, ‘Lost’, was the first to get the treatment, rereleased as a single in september with an accompanying music video, taking the viewer inside the recording process at stebbings Recording studios in Auckland. the band then showcased a taster of what’s to come this weekend at the new Zealand music Awards when they performed the track – matiu’s haunting voice rising up through the building hum of the string section.
“[Working with APO] definitely elevated a lot of the feelings that were in the songs already,” he explains. “It helped us take our music in another direction. It’s cool, we are always trying to push our performance, our creativity.”
even ‘Rise Up’ is getting a new treatment, which is ideal for the boys as “it’s given us a chance to reinvent the song. It’s quite old and it does get a bit boring to play that over and over again”.
“One of the pitfalls of the album and coming out the way we did, through the pub scene, we haven’t had the opportunity to play a lot of these songs as we intended, as we wanted to be heard. this show gives us a chance to show our diversity,” says matiu.
“But we are not going too ‘arty farty’ or too far away from what we do,” he quickly adds. “We’re not going to come out in tuxedos or anything like that. I guess that would be appropriate, but it’s not us.”
