DRAKE/ 2 CHAINZVECTOR ARENA

AUCKLAND

6.30PM, $157, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

Drake, the sensitive canuck that doubles as a critically lauded rapper, will be here with the bro 2 Chainz for a Vector spectacle. Bringing pyros, lighting, sound systems and a few Nike backpacks full of swagger, Drake will also bring a carafe of hits. The over-prepared 2 Chainz will hopefully bring more than two chains.

PETER HOOK & THE LIGHTSTUDIO

AUCKLAND

7.30PM, $71, METROPOLISTOURING.NZTIX.CO.NZ

Having previously played both Joy Division albums here, Peter Hook and co will now pay homage to New Order’s influential period between 1983 and 1987 (but still open with some JD stuff). A new wave icon, Hook’s distinct, brittle bass tone will be on full show at the Studio. It’s time to pop on Brotherhood.

SHAKEY GRAVESTHE TUNING FORK

AUCKLAND

8PM, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

Shakey Graves is a one man band created by Alejandro Rose Garcia. Also a successful actor, Garcia plays a show built around DIY blues talent, a raw howl, a guitar and a suitcase bass-drum. With a new album due here shortly (And the War Came), the hypnotic Texas gentleman puts on an unpredictable, unmissable show.

SPLORETAPAPAKANGA REGIONAL PARK

AUCKLAND

$190-255, ITICKET.CO.NZ

There really is no place like Splore. It’s a warm, fun-loving boutique festival that lasts for three days – and I wish it lasted a lifetime. Located next to a cot-damned beach surrounded by Pohutukawa, Splore boasts art, music and liberation. Headlined by sunshine lovin’ Roy Ayers, Mr Scruff and Trinity Roots, this will be perfect.

FOO FIGHTERS ST SMART STADIUM

AUCKLAND

6.40PM, $50-$199, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

The Rock FM playlist-hogging, hit-making, earthquake-causing Foo Fighters are back to play new material from their LP Sonic Highways. Dave Grohl will be totally not an asshole, Taylor Hawkins will still look like Taylor Hawkins, and half the country will be there. Me? I just want to hear ‘Generator’ with the talk box, for god’s sake.

SLASHCLAUDELANDS ARENA

HAMILTON

8PM, $129, TICKETEK.CO.NZ

With three albums under his belt, Slash himself – the hat, the glasses, the hair and hopefully the guitar – will sojourn to Claudelands Arena in February. Playing solo material plus a handful of Gunners classics, the affable rocker brings Myles Kennedy of Alterbridge fame on vocals. Hamiltonians (or Hamiltoes as I once heard) Devilskin will open.

FREYA DESMAIRAS: LIVE ORGYTHE BASEMENT

AUCKLAND

7PM, $10-18, ITICKET.CO.NZ

Disclaimer: this is not a legit live orgy like the one you witnessed in Amsterdam. But for $18, you get something remarkably similar in an offbeat play that ruminates on sex, being a ‘bachelesbian’ and the striking similarities between tane mahuta and dildos. As part of the Pride Festival, this is a raunchy ride indeed.

NZ’s slice of rainbow culture is coming. This is the Auckland Pride Festival, a celebration that runs for all of February. Comprised of performances, music and events that embrace general fabulousness, this is your opportunity to wave your flag, sing ‘I’m Coming Out’ at the top of your lungs, or wear a loud costume to show your support. The heart of the festival is the Pride Parade on the 21st – with a gods and monsters theme, it gets bigger and prouder every year. Looks like I’ll be reviving my fluoro digs from that nu-rave period I suffered through in 08.

DEPOT ARTSPACE DEGUSTATIONDEPOT ARTSPACE

AUCKLAND

Featuring works from Paris Kirby, the Watenes and Nicolas Boyd, the Depot Artspace exhibition is something you should add to your 2015 art schedule. SURI VS SHILOHQ THEATRE

AUCKLAND

7.30PM, $18-25, ITICKET.CO.NZ

Oh, to be a kid born into a famous family. Alas, it wasn’t so – but this daring hour of contemporary theatre offers a vicarious thrill, focusing on Brangelina and TomKat’s kids, Shiloh and Suri, growing up in the public eye. A fresh, hilarious look at our penchant for celebrity idolisation, the girls tell their stories.

EDDIE IZZARDASB THEATRE

AUCKLAND

8PM, $90, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

As one of the biggest stand-up comedians of our time, Eddie Izzard is back for his most extensive tour ever. He has just finished a three month residency in Paris, doing whole performances in French (and he still managed to be hilarious). Admitting that he gets paid for talking bollocks, at least its funny bollocks.

VALENTINES DAYEVERYWHERE

WORLDWIDE

A corporate circle-jerk between florists, card companies, Durex and Cadbury, Valentines Day is here to inflict pain and suffering on wallets and single people. Restaurants will be even busier this year because it falls on Saturday. I thought ahead and saved half of my chocolate from Christmas. Hope she likes Cherry Ripes and Turkish Delights.

A dazzling orchestral performance, Gustav Holst’s The Planets is an astrological pleasure with three very different movements - Mars, Jupiter and Neptune. Also featuring Short Ride in a Fast Car and the powerful Violin Concerto.

MULTIPLE TIMES, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

It’s nearly six years since MJ kicked the bucket, but his legacy lives on and on… and on. It all comes flooding back in Thriller Live, an elaborate stage show which has seen continued success on Broadway. Starring MiG Ayesa as Jacko, it features mega-hits throughout his career – his song from Free Willy is legit.

MICHAEL PALIN LIVEAOTEA CENTRE

AUCKLAND

8PM, $95-195, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

The man, the Monty, the TV travel documentary presenter – Michael Palin is back celebrating his many travels across the globe. A free-wheeling conversationalist, Palin speaks candidly – about his childhood, about Python, about life and what it means to be bereft of life; ceasing to be; resting in peace. (Dead Parrot sketch – sorry) An absolute essential.

Page 10: Groove Guide 517

10 | GROOVEGUIDE.CO.NZ

FORCE MAJEURE IS a French phrase used to mean an “irresistible force” or “an event that cannot be controlled” and a term Eddie Izzard has adopted to name and describe his current and ongoing live show. Billed as the “most extensive comedy show” ever undertaken, Force Majeure has been on the road since 2013 and has taken the iconic British comedian to some 25 countries on five continents and this month it’s New Zealand’s turn.

I spoke to Eddie on the phone from his home in London and we began by discussing dyslexia, a condition that informs his work and methods.

While it initially held him back in certain things, (literature still intimidates him), he was able to use his lack of understanding to develop an irreverent attitude toward words and the use of words, which has informed his unique brand of stand-up comedy to this day.

“Dyslexics are driven in a way that is more creative. We tend to think sideways rather than vertically and if you can get it to work for you it’s fantastic. The trials and tribulations of life, as long as you head toward them and deal with them, can turn into positive things,” says Izzard.

In preparation for this interview I watched dozens of clips of Eddie performing his stand-up routines on YouTube and I asked him if his comedy is scripted or improvised “stream of consciousness” as it appeared to be?

“I don’t write any of it, I verbally sculpt it. Preparing for Force Majeure I did three months of shows, two performances a night six nights a week in Los Angeles and San Francisco using old material from which I fleshed out the new ideas.”

At this point in the interview I ask Eddie questions solicited from my friends:

How does he manage to stay looking so young? (He is 52 years old).

“I have stopped eating refined sugar, (I encourage everyone to do that – it is the devil), and run marathons. That combined with good genes inherited from my father (who was still being offered children’s fares on the bus until he was almost 30). I also think I am 22 in my head which helps a lot. If you think young, you stay young.”

Despite his dyslexia, Izzard is multi-lingual and performs his routines in both German and French as well as English. Which brings me to the next question – does humour translate between languages?

“Humour translates very easily. This is my theory: Humour is human, it’s not national. The references are national but the humour is universal.”

At this point I ask him about his influences.

“Monty Python are my gods of comedy and when they did their ten reunion shows at the O2 Arena in London

recently, I went to see 7. Monty Python mixed in with the Goons, (in particular Spike Milligan), Richard Pryor, Billy Connelly and Steve Martin, and there you have me.”

Besides his stellar comic career, Izzard has 25 movie performances and innumerable TV shows under his belt. He had in fact been on the set of the TV show Hannibal only the day before this interview playing opposite Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen who he describes as a great actor with amazing intensity adding that Hannibal is quite a scary production to be in.

I ask him particular about playing one of the comedy greats, Charlie Chaplin, in the film The Cat’s Meow (a 2001 period drama directed by Peter Bogdanovich which explores an actual event – the mysterious murder of film mogul Thomas Ince on board the luxury yacht of media giant William Randolph Hearst who was celebrating his birthday with a veritable who’s who of Hollywood royalty, including Chaplin, when he came to his sticky end).

“I didn’t actually find Chaplin funny at all just like I don’t find Shakespeare’s comedy funny either. Researching the role, I went and saw Chaplin’s City Lights on the big screen with a live orchestra and laughed all the way through which surprised me. I realised that his is comedy designed for the big screen and that the editing and pace didn’t suit television, the medium by which I experienced him up until then.”

All too soon our time is up and I finish by asking Eddie if there is anything he would like to say to his NZ fans.

“I always love coming to NZ but I am quizzical as to why you are named after an obscure part of Holland? Anyway, I am pleased that NZ exists; it is like being at home in Britain, except there are more hills.” SEE HIM LIVE: EDDIE IZZARD

BILLY T: TE MOVIECOMEDY CENTRAL, 7.15PM

Billy T James was an anomaly, not just in NZ, but the world. If only he was here during the “cheeky darky” debacle or the mind-boggling Pakeha Party – he would’ve let loose on them fools. This documentary uses interviews and remastered footage to depict a funny yet quiet man whose life was tragically cut short.

ENEMYRIALTO CHANNEL, 8.30PM

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Isabella Rossellini, Enemy tells the tale of Adam Bell, a meek history professor living a boring life – that is, until he sees his doppelganger on a DVD. In a paranoid tale of discomfort and identity, Bell searches and successfully tracks down his identical twin, his life then changing in unprecedented ways.

DEATH PROOFSKY MOVIES POP-UP: BURNING RUBBER, 11.50PM

Kurt Russell stars in this Tarantino road-chase movie set in the 1970s. Russell plays Stuntman Mike, a rogue (you guessed it) stuntman who picks up female movie stars to stalk and infiltrate. These women soon discover Mike’s motives and turn the tables. Action-packed and full of one liners, Death Proof is a jaw-droppingly good time.

THE INTERVIEWGENERAL RELEASE

So we’re just going to forget the whole Sony hacking scandal thing ever happened? It’s not filling up my various social media feeds anymore, so I suppose so. Besides all that scaremongering bullshit, there is a pretty funny buddy movie here – a great Goldberg/Rogen script that wryly attempts to zing North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jong-un.

INHERENT VICEGENERAL RELEASE

Joaquin Phoenix, who now strikes a resemblance to Zach Galifianakis, stars as a pothead private investigator in Inherent Vice, a detective film set in the mind-fuck that is 1969. Based on Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel, Vice boasts an all-star cast of Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro. Directed by The Master’s PT Anderson.

SUPERHEROES: A NEVER ENDING BATTLEBBC KNOWLEDGE, 7.30PM

So where did all these superheroes come from? Why is Marvel now a multi-billion dollar industry? Is the Green Lantern gay? Your burning questions are answered in a revealing documentary that examines the art-form of men in tight clothing, featuring interviews with Stan Lee (Marvel head honcho), Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman) and Adam West (Batman).

IN SEARCH OF FRIDA KAHLOSKY ARTS, 7.35PM

Frida Kahlo is one of the world’s most influential artists. In this immersive and personal film, UK musician Emeli Sande retraces the artist’s life, learning along the way just how Kahlo established herself as a visceral presence in art. The self-portraits that feature are a stunning introduction to Kahlo’s work. Exclusive access to greatness.

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDERTV2, 8.30PM

Viola Davis stars in this compelling new drama. Davis plays Annalise Keating, a no-shit criminal defence attorney representing the worst criminals in the country. Exactly what she’ll do for her clients to get away with murder is the best part. TV2 are also launching an interactive mobile app to get stuck in to the juiciness!

MARVEL’S AGENT CARTERTV2, 9.30PM

Capitalising on the current Marvel superhero mania, this new drama series will hook viewers. It’s 1946, and Peggy Carter is struggling to find herself in a post-WWII world. Working for the Strategic Scientific Reserve, Peggy secretly undertakes secret missions for Howard Stark, all the while grieving for her lost love, Steve Rogers – aka Captain America.

THE X FILES8.35PM, PRIME

The X Files theme used to literally wake me from my sleep and induce ET nightmares. Scully and Mulder awaken these nightmares in the film version of the TV series. Risking their lives and careers, both agents try and save the world from a deadly virus which could’ve originated from Jar Jar Binks’ terrible hygiene.

FRESH OFF THE BOATFOUR, 8PM

Fresh Off the Boat follows an Asian-American family who move to Florida in pursuit of father Louis’ dream of opening a cowboy-themed restaurant. Being called “the new Modern Family” by early critics, the series is awesomely set in the 1990s, and focuses on 11-year-old Eddie Huang’s adjustments to white suburbia. One to watch for 2015.

SAMUEL L. JACKSON KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE

Samuel L. Jackson has always enjoyed playing the bad guy and film lovers adore seeing him do it. There are times, he says, when it’s deeply rewarding creating a memorable villain that cinema audiences enjoy just as much as the hero. Just like in Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Jackson has crafted a truly memorable megalomaniac called Richmond Valentine – a super rich tech businessman who wants to save the world by killing almost everyone in it.

Valentine is a genius; he’s charming and funny but utterly ruthless, too, and even though he abhors violence on a personal level he’s prepared to unleash untold death and destruction in order to serve his eco vision for the planet. The earth’s population has risen to unsustainable levels and, in Valentine’s reasoning, it needs culling – drastically.

Valentine also speaks with a totally disarming lisp – a trait that was down to Jackson himself and was rooted in his own childhood.

“It’s something that clearly defines him in terms of when people speak of him, or hear him, or they listen. It also makes people sit up and listen closer.”

“There’s something about people who have handicaps that people either dismiss or embrace, and for him, that’s one of his driving forces throughout his life.

“I used to stutter as a kid, and it made people dismiss me, or laugh at me, or do things which made me work harder to be smarter, tougher, better – whatever – than those kids who laughed at me.

“I’m sure Valentine has had that, because of having a speech impediment his whole life, too. It’s one of those driving forces, and he kind of revels in it now. Like, ‘I made it, and I sound like this, but so what?’”

Jackson loves comic books. A couple of years ago, he came home with Mark Millar’s The Secret Service, the graphic novel which is a companion piece to Vaughn’s film. Millar and Vaughn – who worked together on Kick-Ass – developed their stories in tandem.

“When they said they were making the film, I was like, ‘I know that comic!’ It’s kind of like reading Kick-Ass, and all those other things, and thinking, ‘this would be a good movie.’”

A year or so later, the script for Kingsman arrived. “They sent me the script and I read it. I’d read the comic, and I knew Mr. [Mark] Millar, because he’s responsible for making Nick Fury (the character Jackson plays in several films based on the Marvel Comics character) black, so we know each other from those years. He’s a great guy.”

Jackson was also keen to work with Matthew Vaughn and wanted to give the character of Valentine his own unique spin. He wanted to create a truly

memorable villain – one that could join the esteemed ranks of cinema baddies he’s enjoyed over the years.

“Some of it was in the comic and some of it was mine,” he says. “The way he looks is in the comic, in a certain kind of way. His affectations and persona are things I brought with me.”

He found a kindred spirit in Vaughn. Both of them are concerned with getting the details exactly right when it comes to character and story. Valentine is an American and Vaughn, a Brit, wanted to make sure his dialogue was exactly right.

“He was very open to me fixing the words to sound American. He was like, ‘I’m not an American black guy so if you need to fix something, fix it, and we’ll talk about it.’ I’d always talk to him about it before I did, so that he would understand, and he was very open that way.”

Jackson stars opposite Colin Firth who plays Harry Hart, an elite operative with a clandestine organisation, The Kingsmen, who discovers that Valentine is behind the mysterious disappearances of a host of prominent academics, scientists and entertainers.

For Firth, playing the suave, sophisticated but ruthless gentleman spy is an all-action role unlike anything he has undertaken before. He will surprise and delight audiences, and for Jackson it made perfect sense.

“All actors, especially guys, there’s something about us that wants to play the badass. Nobody had given him that opportunity, and here he has a real opportunity to be the guy that, all of a sudden, if you say the wrong thing to him, he’s very lethal and dangerous.

“I’ve had the opportunity to do it a few times, to be in great adventure stories and shoot lots of people, and run from things with big teeth. Those are the kinds of movies you went to see when you were a kid, and everybody, I don’t care who you are, wants to be James Bond, or somebody like him, or the villain in a Bond movie.”

So you’ll be relieved to know that the legendary Whammy bar is hosting some seriously great February gigs to cure your real-life blues, including a sweet party on the 5th for the 100thissue of The Fold pocket-paper featuring PCP Eagles and Heavy. The atmosphere, drinks, bites (and sound mixes) are kick ass here. I always make sure to give Whammy a wiggle. Make sure to check out their Facebook for deets.

SWEET BAKERYSWEETBAKERY.CO.NZ

WELLINGTON

Cupcakes, cookies, brownies – I could gorge on these all day, and I generally don’t care about presentation. But Sweet Bakery & Cakery put their love of sweetness into their baking – and by Jim, does it show - their presentation is top-notch. There is also the option of personalised cupcakes.

BLUEBELLS CAKERY161A HILLSBOROUGH RD

AUCKLAND

One of Auckland’s top boutique bakeries, Bluebell Cakery specialises in hand-iced cupcakes, wedding cakes and a smothering of other baked treats. Their cupcakes are baked from scratch daily for that Sly Stone-freshness, and they also offer an in-store range of delicious fudges, biscuits, loaves.

POMEROY’S 292 KILMORE ST

CHRISTCHURCH

Pomeroy’s used to be the Wards Brewery, which was established in the nineteenth century. Now, they carry on the tradition by offering 31 prize-winning beers – a heritage site coupled with damned good drop. Stooped in rich history with a warm, welcoming vibe, Steve and Victoria Pomeroy can truly make you feel at home at their place.

THE OCCIDENTAL 6/8 VULCAN LANE

AUCKLAND

Many nights have been spent here holding a gigantic glass of Leffe Blond, singing to a cover band’s endless take on Hotel California. The Occidental has been a mainstay of Vulcan Lane – a Belgian beer café which offers all the usual delicious fare – plus those mouth-watering mussel pots you’ve heard about. Get in there, son.

THE FIRST BAD MANMIRANDA JULY

BOOK

In this spectacular first novel, Miranda July – also an acclaimed filmmaker and artist – presents a tender and gripping portrait of lust and eccentricity entitled The First Bad Man. We follow Cheryl, an uptight, vulnerable and slightly delusional woman who works at the women’s self defense non profit organisation and has an unnerving fear of other peoples babies. She walks with a neurotic monkey on her back – and once a 21-year-old firecracker named Clee moves in with Cheryl unexpectedly, and provides a new path of love and, ultimately, reality. Dazzling and unforgettable, The First Bad Man is a tender, addictive masterstroke.

HOW TO FLY A HORSEKEVIN ASHTON

BOOK

How to Fly a Horse is the 20-year-in-the-making brainchild of Kevin Ashton, a MIT technology pioneer and successful start-up businessman. Horse documents humanity’s creations throughout the years and how we’ve come to be so frickin’ smart. Analysing the steps creators take from Apple to Coke to the Muppets, this is essential for the budding Jobsian.

EVERY DAY IS AN ATHEIST HOLIDAYPENN JILLETTE

BOOK

Penn and Teller were a nineties magic mainstay, sadly lost on today’s generation. But the louder, larger, crazy half of the outrageous duo is back with a new book – and surprise, surprise – it’s a collection of outspoken spiritual rants and off-key raves based on his life and atheism. Profane, slightly deranged, and most importantly, entertaining.
