MUM GETS REK’DAuckland bar Cassette has announced the rest of its Music Month treats following last week’s opening show as part of the REKKIT + MUM club nights. Friday 11 May will see Coco Solid, Spring Break and Wild Beasts play with special guest DJ spots; Friday 18 May features Disasteradio, Jon Lemmon, Forest Spirits, Bewm Babiez and Rekkit DJs; and the Music Month extravaganza will wind up with the last show on Friday 24 May with So So Modern, Yolanda and H D S P N S playing with DJs Lotion and Weapons on the decks.
ShoRT STUFFEntries are now open for this year’s Show Me Shorts festival, the annual short film competition that takes the serious seriously and the jokers appropriately. Show Me Shorts is an IMDb qualifying festival, granting all eligible film submissions a fast-tracked title page in IMDb.com. So you’ll be totally famous as long as you haven’t given up on your masterpiece. Films have to be over two and less than 20 minutes, and the regular deadline is Friday 01 June. There are a few more stipulations that competition goers will need to check out at showmeshorts.co.nz.
bEATS MEET bRASSThe Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra will be winding up Music Month with a concert uniting orchestral and hip-hop. The Remix the Orchestra: Full Orchestra Meets Hip-Hop concert will be held at the Auckland Town Hall on Thursday 31 May and features Tyree, Frisko and Ermehn with DJ CXL on the decks with the reins being held by conductor, composer and music educator Kenneth Young. Tickets are available now for $20-$30 through BuyTickets.
FANCY NEW bANDSThe 95bFM Fancy New Band Showcase has been announced to take place at The Kings Arms in Auckland on Friday 25 May. Acts on the bill are Loui The Zu, Autumn Splendour, Spring Break and The Raw Nerves from Auckland, Tom Lark from Christchurch, Two Cartoons from Dunedin and The Boxcar Rattle from Wellington. The free show (thanks to theaudiece.co.nz and 95bFM) will kick off early with the first band on at 7:45pm, plus if you’ve got a bCard it’s prizes galore.
MAKING ThE bLACK LIST Blacklistt (including four of the five members of Blindspot) have announced a nationwide tour kicking off at the end of May and running throughout June. The band will play on Friday 31 May at Refuel in Dunedin; Saturday 01 June at Saints ‘n’ Sinners in Invercargill; Sunday 02 June at The Bedford in Christchurch; Friday 08 June at Brewers Bar in Mt Maunganui; Saturday 09 June at The Brownzy in Browns Bay; Friday 15 June at The Mayfair in New Plymouth; Saturday 16 June at the San Fran Bath House in Wellington; Friday 22 June at Altitude Bar in Hamilton; and will finish up in Auckland on Saturday 23 June at the Powerstation.
FREShER ThAN MINTThe phoenix raised from the ashes of The Mint Chicks that is Opossom will soon be treating Auckland and Wellington audiences to shows. Kody Nielson, Bic Runga and Michael Logie are set to celebrate the release of Opossom’s Electric Hawaii, out through Dark Summer Records on Friday 01 June. The trio will play three consecutive shows at Auckland’s Lucha Lounge on Thursday 31 May, Friday 01 June and Saturday 02 June before heading to Wellington to play at the San Fran Bath House on Friday 08 June. Further national shows are still to be announced, but in the meantime tickets are available for $20 plus booking fee through Under The Radar.
ThE hoLY GhoST RETURNSDennis Coles AKA Tony Starks AKA Starky Love AKA Pretty Toney AKA Ghostdeini AKA Ironman AKA Ghostface Killah has announced upcoming shows in New Zealand this June. One of the bigger names to ever come out of clan Wu-Tang, Ghostface is more than just a pseudonym pun machine concerning a certain comic book hero – the founding member of Wu-Tang has appeared on around 20 albums either as a solo artist or with the wider Def Jam or Wu-Tang Clan artists. It’s not the rapper’s first time here, having wowed local crowds most recently at Auckland’s Powerstation in 2009 and signing certain parts of the human body that aren’t usually covered in ink. Ghostface will play at Auckland’s Powerstation on Thursday 07 June… MORE DATES TO COME. Tickets are available now through Ticketmaster.

The Fix reported last week that Courtney Love hasn’t controlled Kurt Cobain’s image since 2010.It turns out that the heir to the Cobain throne has been sitting on it quietly for some time. Frances Bean Cobain is in fact in charge of the Nirvana singer’s likeness, name, and appearance ever since the Hole singer (famous for her outrage and outrageousness) took a loan from her 19-year-old daughter’s trust fund. Love stepped down as acting manager of Kurt’s publicity-inducing legacy machine End of Music LLC, and it was also reported that Love has no control over neither Cobain’s nor Nirvana’s music. Word is Love can regain control of the publicity rights once she repays her daughter the loan she acquired from her trust fund.
The Simpsons finds itself with a bit more indie cred as two of the world’s biggest alt acts make a musical appearance on the show. It’s no surprise that Matt Groening has managed to wrangle Animal Collective and Hot Chip songs for his baby — the Simpsons creator curated All Tomorrow’s Parties back in 2010 in which Panda Bear made an appearance after all. The latest episode of The Simpsons to air in the US featured Hot Chips ‘Boy From School’ and Animal Collective’s ‘Winter’s Love’. Both of the clips are on our website at grooveguide.co.nz, and it has to be said that the Animal Collective spot truly is one of the more touching scenes we’ve seen from The Simpsons lately.

Favourite childhood memory? A mother of a school lunch I bought one day consisting of a meat pie, apricot pie, yoghurt and a marmite-and-chip roll all for just $2! Before the days of Playstation and childhood obesity (and Marmite shortages).

Last week the New York Times published a lengthy piece on OFWGKTA prodigy Earl Sweatshirt and his story since the explosion of Odd Future. It features an in-depth talk with both Thebe Kgositsile (AKA Earl Sweatshirt) and his mother Cheryl Harris, and the decision Harris made to send her son away to “wilderness” and “therapeutic retreat for at-risk boys”. As well as being a revealing read with insight into the inner workings of how parents deal with the hype and fame of the somewhat underage OF crew, Earl talks about his upcoming plans with OFWGKTA, Sony and of course, OF frontman Tyler, The Creator.
It seems as though going solo was the best thing Jack White could’ve done for his music. The former White Stripes singer/guitarist/all around musical icon and legend has nabbed the number one spot on the US Billboard charts with his new solo album Blunderbuss, which is the first time in his 15-year career he has taken the spot. Dead Weather and Raconteurs records have previously made it into the top 10 but have never reached the top. No doubt his Gary Oldman directed live stream on YouTube a few weeks ago helped him out.

Actor Ralph Fiennes makes his directorial debut with Coriolanus, a new take on an old story. Adapting the William Shakespeare classic of the same name, Coriolanus has more guns, more shooting, more blood, more riots, more war metaphors, more current political motifs and more Gerard Butler.
What’s the nicest way of saying that it seems like all Tim Burton wants to do is see his wife (Helena Bonham Carter) make out with Johnny Depp? always in the same movies, they’re always quirky and characterised and they’re always a bit of a letdown. Still, you always want to give Tim Burton the chance.

The award-winning Fuse Productions crew are putting on Revolver at the Downstage Theatre this week, kicking off Wednesday and running on through to Saturday 12 May. Described as “the romanticism of the travelling circus” and “the raw contemporary bloodlust of the streetwise modern world”.
One time at Old Fashioned Wednesdays there were no less than five board games circulating. My flatmate and I showed up a little too late and we interrupted people playing scrabble. The people playing scrabble had really fancy words like “sesquipedalian”. Other than that small piece of me feeling lots of shame, it was a really fun night.
Midweek madness meets Music Month at the Dux Live in Christchurch as alt-rock newcomers The Helpful play with husband and wife two-piece The Response and Hope Street Intermission. Organisers promise that it will be krazy with a k and have also mentioned Hipster Giraffegrams, whatever that means.

Jo Little continues her lengthy trek across the country with Jared Smith as she celebrates the Till The Blue Skies Come tour. These two singer-songwriters have been swooning and crooning their way around NZ, and now it’s Hamilton’s turn.
Bringing together a comedy showcase of local and international comedians, this performance at the San Fran Bath House has a good chance of selling out as it’s done the past two years in a row. Get in quick.
Melbourne street performer-cum-studio artist and all round dubhead Dub FX is joining up for a night of waups and baus with Flower Fairy, Organikismness, Soulware and Tweq all thanks to UCSA, Organik_Audio and New Bedlam Entertainment.
The ever-impressive series of Thursday Night Live down at 1885 Britomart continues, this week with Coast, Taye Williams and Velvet Sound Society on the bill. Complimentary wine on arrival and drink specials all night makes Jack a happy patron.
Machete Justice, In Dread Response, Dead Teach the Living and Be The Fallen all take to The Kings Arms in Auckland for a heavy night of midweek metal and all-round stereotypically appropriate song titles and band names.
Wellington music collective Home Alone Music is releasing Urbantramper’s full-length album Internet Freedom is Love, described as a manifesto of “ElectricUTOPIA” – a referential homage to the new poetics of wifi, email, and online chat.
Tom Lark finishes up his tour at Wellington’s Mighty Mighty as he celebrates the release of his self-titled EP. The Christchurch artist plays with No Aloha at this last gig before he heads back to his bedroom for more musty recordings.
Making their way all the way from the UK, the Kaiser Chiefs have managed to sell out their first ever one and only show at the Powerstation in Auckland. The lads from Leeds will be supported by Auckland five-piece Young Lyre.

When I was 10 I went to see a Cal Wilson show. I was with my mother and someone I called my aunty, even though she wasn’t really my aunty. Cal Wilson made jokes about periods and boners and sex, and I felt weird laughing in front of mum and aunty Ann.

It was 1998 when I got my first Beastie Boys album. I was just some middle of the road kid with a mandate of keeping Channel Z on the radio at all times, and an overwhelming urge to buy any and every Beavis and Butthead VHs I could find, despite my parents’ urge for me to learn and listen to whatever dumb bullshit was the topic of the day on Newstalk ZB.
Hello Nasty had the kind of beats and the type of rap that was okay to play in front of the folks. Keeping in mind this was the era of MtV’s first stint in New Zealand and m2 playing late at night on the television and downloading a song would take you an entire night on Napster or Morpheus, purchasing, listening and appreciating an album was something slightly different as to what it is today. albums were longer and you would listen to the entire thing front to back, not pick your favourite songs and throw them on your On the Go playlist.
By and large, Hello Nasty was my favourite album for years. sure, everyone around the age of 12 already knew who this trio of “sunblock rappers” were, and that they used to be a little more punk. Everyone my age knew ‘Fight For Your Right (to Party)’ and the odd snippet from Licensed To Ill, Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head or Ill Communication, but it was the 1998 release that brought the New York trio into a mainstream circle for audiences of all ages to appreciate. Critically acclaimed for good reason, Hello Nasty was followed by the Beastie Boys Anthology: Sounds Of Science best-of double CD, which truly is one of the must-have-iest of must-have albums ever. sure, it’s just a collection of their best work, but drawing on 15-plus years of punk-gone-rap with appearances from some of the biggest names in hip hop along the way (Q-tip, Biz Markie) and compiling said hits along with previously unreleased material and you’ve got yourself one of the most recognisable collections on anybody’s shelf.
You could be a rock kid and name 10 Beastie Boys songs off the top of your head. You could be a raver and you’d still jump like a maniac whenever ‘Intergalactic’ came on. who hasn’t dressed up in painting overalls, found some dish-washing gloves and DIY-ed a costume for that
21st you didn’t prepare for earlier? who hasn’t rumbled through their friends unorganised CDs in their glove box and happily stumbled across at least one B-Boys album? the group is iconic, plain and simple.
Last year was a big one for the Mikes and adam. the release of Hot Sauce Committee Part Two saw Fight For Your Right (Revisited) hit the innernets. true, actors need to work and get paid. we all know this. But with the appearances of (deep breath) Elijah wood, Danny McBride, seth Rogen, will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Jack Black, susan sarandon, stanley tucci, Rashida Jones, will arnett, adam scott, Rainn wilson, ted Danson, Roman Coppola, steve Buscemi, amy Poehler, alicia silverstone, Laura Dern, Jason schwartzman, Chloë sevigny, Kirsten Dunst, Maya Rudolph, David Cross, Orlando Bloom, Martin starr and still more, this was a homage to everything that the Beastie Boys had accomplished in their 25 years of notoriety. More self-referential than The Simpsons, the video reminded audiences past, present and future that the rappers and multi-instrumentalists are worth every bit of your time that you’re even thinking about giving them.
I hadn’t heard until saturday that adam Yauch had died due to the cancer that he had been diagnosed with in 2009, and – no shit – my friend and I had just been talking about Hello Nasty not 10 minutes before. In that classic cliché way that you always do in memorandum, we hopped onto the computer and made a playlist. Everything from ‘sabotage’ to ‘Get It together’ to ‘alive’ to ‘an Open Letter to NYC’ and everything in between set the tone of our weekend in homage to one of the most latently influential rappers no longer around. I imagine that nearly everyone has their own little story about their relationship with the Beastie Boys, and that’s exactly my point. Live the cliché and remember what it is that made you know how much you’re surprised you know about one of rap’s most well-known trio. Look through the oscilloscope and see what you find.

Just OFF tHE Portsmouth stage and still sweating in post-concert glory, the Kaiser Chief’s own keyboard magician Nick ‘Peanut’ Baines is on the phone. the band has been hard at work touring the Bulldog Iles over the last few months, before they head to the colonies to spread the word.
“Yeah,” he opens in a broad Leeds accent, “I think we’re the best live band we’ve been for ages. we’re on fire at the moment!” Fully ablaze is, without a doubt, where this band wants to be right now.
In a nutshell (pun intended), Peanut explains that their recent self-imposed exile from the music industry feeding frenzy was an absolute necessity. three albums in, all recorded in rapid succession over the latter half of the past decade, the lads were burning out.
“In the uK you’re either on the front cover or rubbish, so we worked hard to earn the covers. But that’s very demanding,” he reflects. “You can’t keep up that momentum constantly without something breaking.” so they took a calculated gamble to step off the podium for a while. a regroup out of the spotlight gave the band time to write and record at Drummer Nick Hodgson’s new basement studio with tony Visconti, Ethan Johns and Owen Morris.
the resulting effort was The Future Is Medieval, which embraces the spontaneity and excitement music-making away from contractual pressures and fans’ expectations. “I think we got to indulge our wide range of influences,” says Peanut, going on to acknowledge their move away from their crowd-chant lad rock anthems like ‘Ruby’ and ‘I Predict a Riot’.
“this album is more about living in London,” he says. “the sounds and the observations that [lead singer] Ricky [wilson] writes about are all around us. You can’t live in Leeds all your life. this is a less political album. It’s more about our environment.”
One of the best career moments for the band so far was the unheralded release of the Future Is Medieval, which was unleashed on an unsuspecting public on June 3 last year. “we just opened up the website one day. For a while you could make your own bespoke album, add and remove your own tracks. It was a bit like Radiohead and that, taking some control.”
the idea was to have the music ready and let people hear it immediately with no pre-emptive promotional strikes or schedules – both fans and critics could access the music at the same time. Opinions were not controlled by the pressure to sell. “I like the idea of it being a cottage industry initiative. Kinda like Leeds used to have, I suppose.”

Auckland five-piece Sherpa have garnered themselves some well-deserved attention lately, making headway on the airwaves thanks to the release of their first full-length album Lesser Flamingo and playing a spot at Laneway earlier this year. Sherpa has been receiving much praise thanks to this and their previous release, the Pretty Cool Optical Illusions EP. This month they’ll be playing several shows in Auckland: Friday 11 May at the Snake Pit on High Street with Street Chant, Golden Axe, Evil Twins and the ARC; Saturday 12 May at the Presence Magazine issue 10 launch party at Te Karanga Gallery on K Road; the 12x12 exhibition on Thursday 17 May at Number 4 Gallery and up at the Leigh Sawmill Café on Saturday 19 May.
The name Shayne Carter is synonymous with New Zealand music. A kiwi icon since the 1980s, Mister Carter has wowed local and international audiences with the likes of Double Happys, Straitjacket Fits, The Adults and of course, Dimmer. Several weeks ago it was announced that the latter would be coming to an end, but the lights won’t be switched off with blowing a few bulbs here and there. After 17 years and four albums, Dimmer will play two final shows with the line-up of Shayne Carter, Gary Sullivan, James Duncan and Vaughan Williams. The first show will be held at The Kings Arms in Auckland on Thursday 24 May, and the final ever Dimmer show will be at Wellington’s Bodega on Saturday 26 May. Fan favourites Beastwars will be performing with Dimmer on both nights.
When four of the five members of Blindspot got together and said “let’s make some more music” the result was as expected – they made music and the still-existent fanbase swept said tunes right up. Following Blacklistt’s achievement in reaching the number one spot on the New Zealand rock singles chart, the band have just announced that they’ll be touring the country from the end of May through June. Audiences both potential and plentiful in Dunedin, Invercargill, Christchurch, Mt Maunganui, Browns Bay, New Plymouth, Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland are in for a treat come Thursday 31 May.
This Auckland four-piece are without a doubt one of the best garage bands around in New Zealand at the moment. There’s no place for hyperbole here – these lads just know good music and how to have fun playing live. Born out of the ashes of country punk act Death Valley, recently The Raw Nerves released their video for ‘Nazi’ and last week saw them open for kings of all brats Wavves. The band’s self-titled album is in the process of being released once it makes its way out of Tennessee thanks to 1:12 Records, and they’ll be playing next at the In House exhibition 12x12 on Thursday 24 May at 4 Cross Street. After that it’s on the road in June as they celebrate the release of The Raw Nerves with a nationwide tour.

Eight years after the release of their sophomore album Fiji Baby, Goodshirt have returned with their third effort Skinny Mirror. Younger audiences may not remember the band that bridged your classic bFM/ZM/Channel Z clichés, but Goodshirt’s stint in the early 2000s was one that was well received by many a clique. Nearly a decade on, the older and wiser group consisting of original members Rodney Fisher, Murray Fisher, Mike Beehre and Gareth Thomas have delivered an album that is once again appealing to the mass market and the more alt of listeners. The band’s next show will be at the Leigh Sawmill Café on Saturday 19 May.
Pip Brown has to be one of the nation’s favourite indie-pop treasures. Since her self-titled 2008 release, Ladyhawke has flown from sky to sky, achieving a platinum album in New Zealand and gold in Australia and the US. This year will see her sophomore album Anxiety released through Modular on Friday 25 May. The queen of NZ new wave cool will be playing two shows in July that fans will have been eagerly waiting for: the first in Wellington at the San Fran Bath House on Friday 13 July and the second at Auckland’s Studio on Saturday 14 July. That gives you enough time to check out the album later this month and learn all those words you know you’ll want to along to.
Kody Nielson’s latest endeavour has been one worth raving about. The ex-Mint Chick delivered the single ‘Cola Elixir’ last year and the two hits ‘Getaway Tonight’ and ‘Blue Meanies’ this year. A stint of Opossom shows have just been announced in which Kody will be joined by Bic Runga and Michael Logie as the trio celebrate the Friday 01 June release of the debut album Electric Hawaii. Three shows will take place at Auckland’s Lucha Lounge in Newmarket over three consecutive nights (Thursday 31 May – Saturday 02 June) before the trio head down to Wellington to play at the San Fran Bath House on Friday 01 June.
Leaving the dance-pop moniker of Bionic Pixie, Zoe Fleury used her time playing with the likes of Peaches and The Kills and took the stage name Zowie as she got ready to break the streams both main and alt with the infectious pop hit ‘Broken Machine’ back in 2010. After plenty of touring both nationally and overseas, the singer is getting ready to release her debut album Love Demolition which comes out Friday 11 May through Sony. While Zowie is constantly likened to a new wave version of Kimbra, the artist has more than enough talent to see her do big things in the future.
Cantab boy Tom Lark finishes his All Night Long tour this week with his final celebratory show at Mighty Mighty in Wellington as he winds up this set of single release show of sorts. Last year the incredibly self-described “bedroom born alt-pop” musician released the Tom Lark EP which crossed the stereotypical folk and indie pop boundaries, coming up with a sound that has the right mix of accessible and alternative that should appease most any ear balls that are treated to it. The musician’s next appearance following this week’s show in the capital will be at the 95bFM Fancy New Band Showcase on Friday 25 May at The Kings Arms in Auckland.
Having just wound up her tour for ‘The Girl In Stilettos’, the country’s favourite new songstress is lined up to work with Boh Runga. Appropriate as she’s been liked to Runga sister Bic, so there are high hopes for the girl that very well may be New Zealand’s next big voice. While Annah doesn’t have much in the pipeline set for the immediate future, she’s proven herself to both audiences and her new label Sony that she’ll be one to watch in the coming months. Her debut album Little Strangers is in stores now.

Talk about having a lot to live up to. First Serve predictably lacks when compared to many of De La Soul’s previous albums, but it’s still 10 times more fun than your usual blunt-smoking, smack-talking hip-hop. And technically speaking this isn’t De La Soul, it’s Plug 1 and Plug 2 – AKA Pos and Dave – just two-thirds of De La Soul’s line-up. The two Plugs hit rewind for this effort – not just creating a throwback, but launching a full back-flip: landing us in the ‘90s when DLS were bringing comedic rhyme with a ‘70s funk and disco aesthetic, to a staunchly serious hip-hop scene. So if you feel like you’ve heard all this before then you pretty much have. But it’s still entertaining as hell, aided by tidy production from Chokolate and Khalid, with some punchy back and forth from the DLS duo. Consider it a tasty starter before De La Soul’s next release.

as the cover art suggests, Jones is going for grit. The queen of “nice” is always at her best playing what she wants, not what the marketing stiffs demand. Hooking up with Brian Burton (AKA Danger Mouse) to get this into PROD was also a good move. Burton’s responsible for not only production but also and co-wrote, with Jones, the 12 tracks of layered and atmospheric music that touch on country, pop, indie and jazz. The sound is smart, crisp, and keyboard-centred with a polished sheen, raising the mundane to the spectacular.

that defines ‘Say Goodbye’ and the music box tinkles in ‘After The Fall’ which are both nervy, ethereal break up tunes (Jones’s had a real romantic split at the sessions outset). I like the David Lynch darkness in ‘4 Broken Hearts’ and the very nasty little turn in the bitch-slap of ‘Miriam,’ a sweet, stately lullaby of chilling revenge.

over the last decade, spiritualized haven’t tried to match the bombast of Let It Come Down, their penultimate album after the seminal Ladies and Gentlemen…, preferring a more stripped back approach. On Sweet Heart Sweet Light the string quartets return – though not the 120+ musicians of old – and if the title sounds like a nod to the Velvet Underground, the droning ‘Heading For The Top’ and epic ‘Hey Jane’ prove the point. Lou Reed’s old buddy Bowie is also referenced in ‘So Long, You Pretty Thing’, but it’s more like Oasis after five minutes when the song finally erupts into a gargantuan chorus. Although claiming this album to be ‘poppy’, Jason Pierce’s affection for the distortion pedal and heavy repetition, plus a drug ravaged voice (especially ‘Life Is A Problem’), means these songs aren’t exactly destined for mainstream radio, and Spiritualized will remain in their own gloriously noisy niche.

a new release from these masters of eclecticism is always cause for excitement and with Aufheben, brian Jonestown massacre are sure to satiate fans of their particular brand of crazy. There are many staples here for long-time fans to latch on to; psychedelic guitars, dreamy, reverb heavy vocals and tongue-in-cheek song titles. However, this time around it’s a heavy Indian influence that overlays proceedings and acts as a pervasive theme which gives the record a sense of cohesion. ‘Panic in Babylon’ is in many ways a microcosm of the album as a whole; largely instrumental, upbeat and fairly tame by their usual standards. Meanwhile ‘I Wanna Hold Your Other Hand’ is pretty much business as usual and ‘Waking Up To Hand Grenades’ stands out as one of the album’s best moments. As with most of their records this one has its ups and downs, but overall it’s their best effort in years.

lush, loud and brimming with understated grunge psychedelia, The golden awesome’s debut packs a punch. Autumn feels nothing so much like diving down to the bottom of the ocean, where waves of overdriven, murky guitar chords crash overhead. Snaking through this thick lumbering texture, lead singer Stef Animal’s high, hypnotically ethereal voice provides a beautiful and much needed contrast on songs like the title track ‘Autumn’ and ‘A Thousand Nights And One Night’. At times this music seems more like a spiritual drone, hitting you again and again with relatively small and subtle changes developing over the course of the song. When it works it’s immersive and somewhat overwhelming, as on tracks like ‘High Life’ and ‘Where To Begin’. However there are times when it can all sound a bit drawn out and repetitive; there is a clear formula here and they never deviate too far from it.

one day late-flowering action hero liam neeson will find his John mcClane. and one day writer-director Joe will recapture the glory of his blistering debut, Narc. But though this muscular survival thriller finds both on fine form, it isn’t quite it.
We begin with a lengthy introduction to Neeson’s
Good for Nothing is an admirably slick production for a self-funded kiwi movie, and a pretty good watch by any standard. The rugged Kiwi landscapes ably ‘play’ the American West and bring an untouched feel perhaps lacking in many Westerns filmed in the States.
The Hollywood Reporter review flatteringly cited the influence of the early films of Sam Raimi and the Coen brothers, and it’s not hard to see why. Audiences familiar with New Zealand film history might detect some of Geoff Murphy’s (Goodbye Pork Pie; Never Say Die) proclivity toward intercourse-centric puns and character development.
Indeed, the main character here can’t “get it up”, which pretty much drives the plot
with films from the Judd apatow house of ideas (like this one) now forming the standard by which all other studio character comedies are judged, it can be easy to get complacent about how much they elevated the form.
The Five-Year Engagement is as close to a ‘typical’ Apatow-produced film as we’re likely to get, so there’s no shortage of endearingly faulted characters, authentic comedic moments and worldly observations about modern life. The title suggests a one-note source of conflict, but the film is much more a patient examination of the arc of a couple’s relationship than a zany, drawn-out trip to the altar. The problems they face are familiar and grounded, and are approached without solve-all solutions.
everywhere it goes. As said, character The Man, rising Kiwi talent Cohen Holloway is appreciably inscrutable and awesomely scuffed-up. This Sergio Leone-ish grimy quality permeates the entire film and elevates it to a place that where the grit is tangible and the suspension of disbelief is easy.
Female lead Inge Rademeyer is small in stature but hugely sympathetic as a young woman completely out of her element. The film wholly rests on the mostly unspoken relationship between her and The Man, and it proves a solid backbone.
A touch of goodwill for a local production will help you appreciate Good For Nothing but it’s not necessary to make it worth your while.

Emily Blunt is as radiant as ever and Jason Segel slips into his well-worn cinematic persona (well-meaning doofus) like an old pair of slippers. Mad Men’s Alison Brie does a passable English accent as Blunt’s sister, and Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt demonstrates how ready he is for his own comedic leading role.
Whilst some of the threads here feel a little irresolute, that mainly speaks to the authenticity of the story. It’s less of a laugh riot than Forgetting Sarah Marshall (the last film that paired Segel and director Nicholas Stoller) but makes up for it as a refreshingly grounded portrait of a contemporary relationship.

beasts prepare to attack.Neeson, as usual, is magnificent.
To quiet a mortally injured casualty, he whispers, gently, “You’re gonna die, that’s what’s happening… think of all the good things. Who do you love?” Ten minutes later he’s strapping shotgun shells to spears to make lethal “bang sticks”. How’s that for all-round action heroics.
Carnahan’s no slouch either. The wolf attacks are sudden, frantic and terrifying, the dialogue is spare and smart, and there’s real emotion amid the machismo. While the intrusion of mundane detail – blizzards, tiredness, exposure – adds to the realism,
it strips away too much of the excitement. Later, a wildly unlikely leap into the unknown does the opposite.
Pity, because as a grown-up action film about a silver fox taking down big, bad wolves, The Grey really delivers. As a bid for the major league from its star/director it snatches much-better-than-averageness from the jaws of awesomeness.

So like, Tom Peters goes to the mayor erryday with a problem. He and the mayor have wee discussions about how to fix these problems. The mayor is sort of helpful but he goes off topic a heap and just doesn’t listen. Gosh. Tom really wants to save this cute bird sanctuary for example, and the mayor decides that he should invest in fuck loads of porcelain birds and re sell them and then buy the bird sanctuary. But like, it all goes wrong n shit. Duh mayor! You so stupid! Poor Tom Peters. His wife is super gross too, and when she yells it’s really awful. It’s made by Tim and Eric so if you have seen their shit before you will know what the kind of humour it is.
Some of it kinda drives me insane, but not as bad as being hung over waiting in a line somewhere. I hate that more than anything. Especially if it’s WINZ or something like that! Man, fuck that.

before you start saving for your suddenly all-important trip to New York.
GCB premieres over on TV2 on Tuesday 15 May at 8:30pm. Originally made for ABC, looks like it’s targeting a certain demographic. Based on the book Good Christian Bitches by Kim Gatlin, GCB follows a down-on-her-luck Californian high-society type who has to return to her hometown of Dallas because life hasn’t worked out the way she wanted it to. Upon her return home she remembers that she was a complete and utter bitch in high school, and now the old classmates-cum-church-going dames of her hometown want upper-middle-white-class revenge. Fans of Marc Cherry’s work (the upcoming Devious Maids, Desperate Housewives, The Golden Girls) will find this show right up their alley.
Two very gal-centric shows are hitting screens this week, but that’s not to say that the males of the species can’t get into them as well.
Thursday 10 May will see Girls air on SoHo at 8:30pm. The HBO show is crafted by newcomer Lena Dunham (who may seem familiar if you’ve seen the film Tiny Furniture) and has naturally been likened to Sex and the City. While comparisons will obviously be made (set in New York, four ladies going through strife, sex and parties and existentialism abound), Girls has enough moxie to rest on its own laurels.
Dunham plays Hannah, a mid-20s wannabe writer living in the Big Apple. There’s the party friend and the corporate friend as well as the younger second-tier friend. It’s all very current and it’s all very now, but it’s the constant tidbits of neuroticism and anxiety that really shine through. You’ll find yourself saying which one of your friends is like who on the show on the first watch, right
