Sunday’s match is the second meeting of the season between the Portland Timbers and Western Conference foe Colorado, and the first at JELD-WEN Field since August of 2012. The Timbers are coming off a scoreless draw on Wednesday night against the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., extending their MLS-club record unbeaten streak to 14 games.

Wednesday’s result against the Galaxy vaulted Portland (6-1-9, 27pts) into second place in the Western Conference standings, ahead of Real Salt Lake on goal differential, and one point away from first-place FC Dallas. Along with extending the team’s MLS-club record long un-beaten streak of 14 games, Timbers head coach Caleb Porter set the MLS record for a first-year head coach with a 14-game undefeated streak, besting the previous record set by former D.C. United head coach Tom Soehn in 2007.

Portland’s positive result on the road means the club remains the only MLS team yet to concede defeat in an away match (2-0-7) this season. Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made four saves in earning his seventh shutout of the season, placing the Jamaican international into a first-place tie with Jimmy Nielsen (Sporting KC) and Bobby Shuttleworth (New England) for the most shutouts in the league.

Colorado (5-6-5, 20pts) enters Sunday’s match in seventh place in the Western Conference standings following a 2-1 road loss to the Chi-cago Fire on Wednesday at Toyota Park in Brid-geview, Ill. The Rapids were without head coach Oscar Pareja, who was suspended for leaving the coaches’ box during a game against San Jose last week, and midfielder Hendy Thomas, who was also suspended for a reckless tackle against defender Steven Beitashour during the game against San Jose. Both will be available

against the Timbers on Sunday.

Against ColoradoSunday’s match marks the seventh all-time meeting between the Portland Timbers and Col-orado Rapids. Colorado has held the advantage in the all-time series with a 4-1-1 record against Portland since 2011. The Timbers, however, are 1-1-0 against the Rapids at JELD-WEN Field, last playing host to Colorado on Aug. 31, 2012. For-ward Bright Dike scored the game-winning goal in the 45th minute to lead the Timbers to a 1-0 win. More recently, Timbers midfielder Will Johnson recorded his first career brace while helping Portland overcome a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against Colorado on March 30 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. In the draw, the Timbers earned their first penalty kick since the end of the 2011 season.

Timbers Flashback Willie Anderson

For the North American Soccer League (NASL), 1975 was a year of many firsts. Five new teams

were added to the league, including the Portland Timbers. Ties were removed from competition and wouldn’t be seen in top-tier American soccer until 2000. Pelé joined the New York Cosmos, and it was the first season the championship game was rebranded to be called the Soccer Bowl.

It was also the first season in the United States for a young British winger named Willie Anderson. Anderson came to the Timbers in 1975 on loan from Cardiff City. He began his youth career in the Manchester United development program, eventually making a handful of appearances for the Red Devils’ senior team. He’s most known for, however, his 231 appearances for Aston Villa, where he scored 36 goals.

When he arrived in Portland in 1975, Anderson would join a contingent of British players that would lead the team all the way to Soccer Bowl ’75 in San Jose, eventually losing a hard-fought game, 2-0 to Tampa Bay. Recently, Anderson took time to look back on Soccer Bowl ’75, his time in Portland and the growth of soccer in the country.

What do you remember about playing against Tampa Bay in Soccer Bowl ’75?“It wasn’t the best field for us because it was a narrow field, more like a football field. We played with two wide men, two wingers, Jimmy Kelly and myself. Our game needed width and there wasn’t a lot of it there so I think it suited them better than it suited us. It was a really tight game. They had chances to go up in the first half. I know I got tripped up in the penalty area for a penalty and they didn’t [call it] and that was the first half. They scored a wonder goal in the second half. They brought some defender on to mark me and I think his first touch he just kind of half-volleyed a shot from 30-35 yards that just flew in. Then Clyde Best [who later joined the Timbers in 1977] scored the second goal right at the end of the game when we were trying to get a goal on. But it was anybody’s game until that big strike from Arsène Auguste.

“I remember we played them, I think it was a Sat-urday, and we flew back right after the game, had a reception in Portland, and then we all flew out the next day back home.”

Do you have a special memory fromthat season?“Beating the Seattle Sounders in the playoffs was immense. I think the biggest memory I have of that was practicing the morning of that game, or the day before the game, and Vic Crowe – very smart – knew there was a big crowd that were waiting for tickets that was wrapped around the whole stadium, it was amazing, all waiting for tickets. We ran out [onto the field] for practice and clapped [at the fans] as we ran around the stadium, and they just went nuts. It was great for us, though, just the fan base. It’s like the Timbers Army now. Being a player, I mean, that’s what you live and die for. They could give you all the money in the world, but if the fans hate you, you’re not going to feel good about it. But when there are supporters as there are in Portland, you can’t help but want to play and feel good about it.”

What do you think about the growth of soccer in the United States, and Portland specifically, since then? “When we got here, you couldn’t find a field to do a clinic on. I mean, a soccer field, there wasn’t one anywhere. That was kind of strange, coming from Europe, where there’s a soccer field on every corner. Today, you can’t get enough soccer fields. There aren’t enough. I think in Portland, the Timbers really started the ball rolling, getting people an idea of what it was. That ’75 year was just so exciting and we were so successful. And when these little guys in shorts could go out and people could meet you and you were just regular guys, I think that just gave the community a bit of a feel for who we were, and what we were, and what we were trying to do.”

Do you still attend Timbers games?“The first season I bought season tickets for MLS, because I just knew it was going to be a memora-ble season. The players today that play for the Tim-bers, I hope they know how lucky they are because, you know, to run out on to that great stadium, and have all of those fans going nuts, I mean it’s what every player dreams of. They get it every week.”

It sounded like it was quite physical, is that something you remember?“With it being such a small field, you couldn’t get out of the way of people. We were a pretty good attacking team with Kelly and I on the wings and Peter Withe up front. They kind of figured you can’t run without your legs, so if you aren’t standing up, you aren’t running past them. It was pretty physical. It was always physical going to San Jose because of that small field. It just made it a lot easier to go around kicking people because you could catch them.”

What was your first season in the NASL like?“I remember signing for [head coach] Vic Crowe and I had no clue where I was coming. I’d never heard of Portland, hadn’t even really heard of Oregon. I remember Vic Crowe saying, ‘It’s the next state to California.’ And I just look at him and say ‘Oh, the weather must be great.’ And he said ‘Yeah, it’s great.’ First two weeks I was in Portland it rained, but it was great. We just had a good group of guys, mostly British kids. We all lived in the same apart-ment complex, and we just hit it off. We just all kind of came together and Vic was a really demanding coach in a good way, I thought. He got us super fit and super competitive, and all the pieces just came together for us, Jimmy and I playing and having such a great striker in Peter Withe to knock them in, too. We had some good young kids in midfield and we had a lot of old hands in Ray Martin and Brian Godfrey. You know, we just all came together for that summer. I don’t know whether you could ever do that again, it was just a one-off, I think.”

General Manager Gavin Wilkinson

Gavin Wilkinson, a long-time member of the Timbers organization and a former New Zealand interna-tional, serves as the club’s General Manager; he was appointed on Jan. 18, 2010. He first joined the club as a player for the Timbers’ USL First Division side in 2001, before taking over as the head coach and general manager during the club’s final years in the second division from 2007-10.

As a head coach during the club’s USL era, Wilkinson assembled a 50-29-39 record over four seasons in the USL First Division/USSF Division-2 Pro League and was a two-time USL First Division Coach of the Year (2007, 2009). He guided the club to three postseason berths, including its only semifinals appearances as a second division club in 2007 and 2009. Wilkinson oversaw Cascadia Cup (a fan-based derby between Portland, Seattle and Vancouver) titles in 2009, 2010 and 2012, and is also a two-time recipient of the FieldTurf Coach of the Year for the USL First Division (2007, 2009).

He led the Timbers to one of the best seasons in USL First Division history in 2009, which included a record-setting, 24-game unbeaten streak and winning the Commis-sioner’s Cup. The Timbers set a new single-season, league record with the impressive streak (14-0-10), surpassing the previous mark of 15 games set in 2005. The club’s record-setting run also ranks among the longest in U.S. Soccer history. Finishing in first place at 16-4-10 (58pts), Portland was awarded the Commissioner’s Cup as the league’s regular-season champion and earned a berth into the USL First Division semifinals.

A defender, he joined the reborn Timbers for their inaugural USL First Division season in 2001 and played in each of the club’s first six seasons and was a player/assistant coach from 2005-06. He finished his career ranked among the Tim-bers’ USL franchise career leaders in games (124) and minutes played (10,181).

A New Zealand native, Wilkinson earned 38 caps with the New Zea-land National Team and competed in the 1999 and 2003 FIFA Confed-erations Cups.

As general manager, Wilkinson started the Timbers’ development system, starting with the Portland Timbers U-23s in the fall of 2008. The Timbers U-23s compete in the Premier Development League (PDL) – the top U-23 league in North America – and won the PDL championship in just their second season in 2010, becoming the first undefeated champion in PDL history with a perfect 20-0-0 record. He was instrumental in starting the Tim-bers Academy and youth programs, creating a complete development system for the club.

Wilkinson, who holds an “A” coaching license from USSF, found-ed the youth club Eastside United, based in Gresham, Ore., in 2001. He helped run the club as its coach-ing director for many years and now serves as an advisor for the club. In 2010, Eastside United FC’s U-18 boys team (’91 Liverpool) won the U.S. Youth Soccer U-18 national championship and became the first youth club team from Oregon to win a national title since 1994.

He and his wife, Heather, have two children, Kienan and Brooke.

One of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, Caleb Porter was named the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joins the club following seven seasons as the head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He finished his time at Akron with a career mark of 123-18-17 and owned the highest winning percentage (0.832) among all active Division I coaches.

Porter built Akron men’s soccer into a perennial national championship con-tender, leading the Zips to five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12), back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010.

In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-sea-son championships and five MAC Tournament titles. Porter set multiple NCAA records at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12.

From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, in-cluding NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009. He was a three-time NSCAA All-Ohio Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2011) and received MAC Coach of the Year honors six straight years from 2007-12.

Porter became the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 career wins, accomplishing the feat in just 126 matches. He is also among the fastest all-time in NCAA history to the century mark, reaching the milestone in fewer games than collegiate Hall of Fame and current MLS coaches Bruce Arena (140; Virginia) and Sigi Schmid (136; UCLA).

While at Akron, Porter recruited and developed more than a dozen Zips play-ers who have gone on to professional careers, many plying their trade in Major League Soccer. He had an MLS-record five former players selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and seven selected overall that year. Under Porter’s guidance, Portland’s Darlington Nagbe and former Akron standout Teal Bunbury were recipients of the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate player.

Porter also served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, helping the school make six NCAA tournament appearances, win back-to-back national championships in 2003 and 2004 and claim five Big Ten Conference titles.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny be-fore a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games.

He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain, a three-time All-Big Ten honoree and a four-year letter winner. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles and four NCAA tournament appearances – twice advancing to the College Cup. As a senior, Porter captained Indiana to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella Jane.

Caleb Porter By the Numbers

Timbers head coach Caleb Porter impacted MLS well before joining Portland for the 2013 season. Many of Porter’s players at the University of Akron blossomed under his direction and moved on to become difference-makers in MLS. Born in the Northwest, Porter was also a standout player at the college level, but saw his professional career limited by knee injuries.

Sean McAuley returns for a second sea-son as an assistant coach. He joined the club midway through the 2012 season from English club Sheffield Wednesday FC, where he served as a head coach in the club’s academy. McAuley suited up for the second-division Timbers as a player during the 2002 season.

McAuley began his coaching career at Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 and spent six seasons as the club’s academy head coach, where he oversaw the develop-ment of several youth players who went on to sign with the first team.

A native of Sheffield, England, McAuley played professionally for 15 seasons as a defender from 1990-2005. He started his career with Manchester United and played for Hartlepool United, Scun-thorpe United, Rochdale and Halifax Town. McAuley appeared in 16 matches for the Timbers in 2002, logging two assists while helping the club make the postseason.

Amos Magee enters his third season as an assistant coach for the MLS Timbers. Previously, he was an assistant coach and director of soccer development for two seasons with Portland from 2009-10.

Magee joined the coaching ranks as a player/assistant coach in 2004 with the Minnesota Thunder of United Soccer Leagues. He served as head coach of the Thunder from 2006-08 and coached with the U.S. Maccabi Men’s Open Team, guiding the team to a gold-medal performance at the Maccabi Pan-Ameri-can Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A native of St. Paul, Minn., Magee spent most of his playing career with the Thunder (1991-2004), but also played parts of three seasons in MLS with the Tampa Bay Mutiny (2000-01) and Chicago Fire (2001-02). He recorded 64 goals and 39 assists for the Thunder, becoming the club’s all-time career scor-ing leader and he led the Thunder to six finals appearances and the USL First Division title in 1999. He was inducted into the USL Hall of Fame in 2008.

Cameron Knowles returns for a second season as an assistant coach for the Timbers. A former defender for the second-division Timbers from 2007-10, Knowles joined the coaching ranks in 2012 after a seven-year professional playing career.

Selected by Real Salt Lake in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft, Knowles played two seasons in MLS before join-ing the Timbers. In Portland, Knowles was a three-time USL First Division all-league selection and played in 77 games for the Timbers.

From Auckland, New Zealand, Knowles anchored Portland’s backline and played a key role in the Timbers’ USL First Division record-setting 24-game unbeaten streak in 2009.

Mike Toshack marks his second season as the Timbers goalkeeper coach in 2013. He has served as a goalkeeper coach in MLS since 2009 and won MLS Cup with the Houston Dynamo in 2007.

Prior to joining Portland, Toshack was a member of the coaching staffs in Houston (2007-08) and Toronto FC (2009-11). Before working in MLS, the Prescott, Ontario, native was the direc-tor of goalkeeping for the Vancouver Whitecaps from 2005-06, helping coach the first team to the USL First Division championship in 2006. Toshack served as an assistant coach with the Montreal Impact from 2002-03.

Toshack also served as the goalkeeper coach with the Canada U-20 National Team from 1998-2001.

Pablo Moreira enters his first season with the Timbers in 2013. He previ-ously served as the director of soccer operations for the University of Akron men’s soccer team, assisting on daily operations of the program. Nik Wald enters his seventh season with the Timbers organization in 2013. The Eugene, Ore., native served as the club’s head athletic trainer for the past six seasons, including seasons when the Timbers competed as a second-division side. Wald graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in exercise and movement science in 2003.

A graduate of the University of Oregon, the Portland native was a member of the equipment staff for the school’s football program for four seasons and has worked as a team attendant for the Portland Trail Blazers. Nick Mansueto marks his fifth season with the Timbers in 2013. In his role, Mansueto works closely with the gen-eral manager, technical staff and players on a daily basis, overseeing many areas of team operations and administration. Getting to Know Pa Modou Kah

One of the newest additions to the Portland Timbers is defender Pa Modou Kah. Call him “Mr. International,” as the center back was born in The Gambia, but moved to Norway as a child. He has played professionally in Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and Qatar while also making 10 appearances for Nor-way’s national team during his career. Take a moment to get to know Pa Modou Kah a little better.

On the moveAn avid traveler, the 32-year-old Kah has spent a considerable amount of time ex-periencing many different cultures (West Africa, Scandinavian, the Middle East) during his life. “I was born and raised in The Gambia until I was eight and then I moved to Norway. When you’re from Africa, you’re used to the sun and being outside. I had never seen snow in my life, it was a shock. In terms of living, it was a big change, but you get used to it. For me, Norway is my second home next to The Gambia.”

Kah Fact:Both he and his wife come from big families. With relatives still in The Gambia and Norway, Kah has an aunt that lives in New York and an uncle in Seattle. “I told him that if we come to Seattle he better wear a Timbers jersey or else there will be some fight-ing in the house.”

Kah Fact:Kah earned his first cap with the Norway National Team on Jan. 24, 2001, in a 3-2 win over South Korea in Hong Kong. In front of 22,936 fans, Kah started and played 90 minutes against a South Korean side gearing up to host the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

The people are very friendly, it’s like a family city for me.

I find Portland to be a very nice city withgenuine people and the diversity is very nice.

Off the pitch“My wife and I like to travel around a lot and see new cultures, new people. We’ve been a lot of places. We’ve seen good places, bad places, good people, bad people. At this moment, this is what counts. We’re in Portland and we like the city a lot. It’s a good city, I have good teammates and it’s a good fan base – that’s the most important thing a player can look for in life. I like to enjoy my life and see what’s around and also think of the future. I was thinking about getting my coaches badge, so I’ve been reading about how to work toward it. I hope I can stay here for years to come, that’s my hope at least.”

Making the adjustment“I played in Holland for seven years and the style of play is different: it’s tactical and technical. They play

physical, but not physical like in England and Germany. It’s more

similar to the Spanish, techni-cally strong. I’ve also played

in Saudi Arabia and Qatar and MLS is stronger

than those two leagues combined. MLS is

up-and-coming and I’m so happy

to be here.”

Man’s best friendWallace, who was born in San José, Costa Rica, but grew up in Rockville, Md., spends a lot of time on the town with his reliable companion Leo. “I like to take walks around Wallace Park with my dog, Leo. We like to go to the dog park a lot and he likes to run around. His birthday is coming up soon, so I’ve got to take him out there again.”

Options for breakfast:Isabel (330 NW 10th Ave.) – This joint in the Pearl District features an inviting atmosphere with wall-to-wall windows and an outdoor seating area for those sunny summer mornings. Try one of Wallace’s favorites, the coconut French toast. Or if you’re over on the east side, battle the line at Screen Door (2337 E. Burnside St.) for a chance to indulge in the chicken and waffles.

Timbers fans have seen Wallace’s flair for fashion on display off the field, but he’s also into the entertainment scene around town – catch-ing indie films and concerts in his spare time. “I go to Living Room Theaters every now and then to check out some independent films. I’ve also checked out a couple shows at the Roseland Theater recently. I went to see The Weeknd and I saw Wiz Khalifa there too not so long ago. It was a fun place.”

Timbers midfielder Rodney Wallace is one of the team’s veteran Portlanders – now having been with the side since the club’s jump to MLS in 2011. The Costa Rican international, who has made a habit of being the late-game hero against Seattle with two game-tying goals against Sounders FC in two of the last three meetings, lets us know what he likes to do around the Rose City.

Nothing really comple-ments a day around the Rose City like checking into one of the top-notch restaurants that dot the city. Whether you’re out for breakfast, lunch or dinner, here are a few of Wallace’s favorite spots around Portland.

A busy schedule with training, games and other team commitments keeps Wallace close to Portland much of the time, but he’s working on getting to other spots around the state.“I’m going to be honest; I haven’t had a chance to see areas out of town. I really want to get to the coast soon and check out the beaches ... what you call beaches.”

Get some dinner after a long day: ¡Oba! (555 NW 12th Ave.)“I really enjoy ¡Oba! It’s one of my favorite places to go for a nice din-ner,” Wallace says. Another Pearl District locale, ¡Oba! is character-ized as “Nuevo Latino” cuisine which is essentially a modern take on flavors from Portugal, Spain, the Caribbean and across Latin America.

Connect Four

Timbers forward Ryan Johnson, a Jamai-can international, scored 10 goals in 43 league games for Toronto FC from 2011-12 before joining the Timbers for the 2013 MLS season.

A strong and powerful center forward, Clyde Best made 118 appearances for the Portland Timbers from 1977-81 in the North American Soccer League. The Bermudan international played the 1977-78 Dutch Eredivisie season (took place during the NASL offseason) with Feyenoord, where he walked the halls along-side the club’s youth coach Leo Beenhakker.

A longtime head coach, Leo Beenhakker has guided both clubs and countries, including two stints leading the Neth-erlands (1985-86, 1990), Trinidad and Tobago (2005-06) and Poland (2006-09). The Dutch coach took the reins of AFC Ajax for the first time from 1979-1981 where he was a tutor of young defensive midfielder Aron Winter.

Aron Winter earned 84 caps for the Neth-erlands, also playing for Ajax (1986-92, 1999-2003), and Italy’s Lazio (1992-96) and Inter Milan (1996-99) before becoming a coach. Winter landed in MLS in 2011 when he was hired as Toronto FC head coach and technical director. On July 14, 2011, Winter executed a trade with San Jose for forward Ryan Johnson.

Road to the: Gold Cup

The United States joins 11 other CONCACAF nations this summer in pursuit of the 2013

CONCACAF Gold Cup, which runs from July 7-28 in 13 cities throughout the United States. The Rose City and JELD-WEN Field play host to back-to-back Gold Cup matches on July 9 as Costa Rica faces Cuba and the United States squares off against Belize in Group C action.

The 12th edition of the biennial regional champi-onship, Mexico has won the competition six times while the United States has four titles (1991, 2002, 2005 and 2007) and Canada has won once (2000). Mexico defeated the United States 4-2 in the final of the 2011 Gold Cup, earning a berth to the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup (June 15-30). The match be-tween the United States and Belize in Portland marks the first time the U.S. Men’s National Team has played a match in the Rose City since May 24, 1998 (2-0 win over Kuwait in an international friendly).

tournament’s knockout stage

game is scheduled for July 28 at

adidas TIMBERSALLIANCEThe Timbers have formed the adidas Timbers Alliance, a strategic partnership with elite local youth clubs throughout the Timbers development territory, designed to build unique working relationships and development opportuni-ties to help channel the top youth players toward Timbers development programs and the academy. The adidas Timbers Alliance includes five clubs – the Bend FC Timbers (Bend), Eastside Timbers (Gresham), Rogue Valley Timbers (Medford), Vancouver Timbers (Vancouver, Wash.) and Westside Timbers (Portland).

Further, the Timbers have also partnered with Portland Youth Soccer

TIMBERS REGIONAL TRAINING CENTERSOne of the major com-ponents of the Timbers development structure and Oregon ODP are six Regional Training Centers, located in the cities of Beaverton, Bend, Eugene/Salem, Gresham, Medford and Vancouver, Wash. Each Regional Training Center is designed to identify and further develop elite players, both boys and girls, in the U-12 to U-14 age groups in its designated area. From these training centers, a pool of players is chosen to form state ODP and/or Timbers Pre-Academy teams at various age levels for regional and national competitions.PORTLAND TIMBERS

ACADEMYThe Timbers Academy consists of teams in the U-18 and U-16 age brackets of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. The Timbers Academy provides elite youth players from Oregon and Southwest Washington advanced training and competitive opportunities against the best youth players across North America.

PORTLAND TIMBERS U-23sThe pinnacle of the Timbers development system is the Portland Timbers U-23s, which competes in United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League (PDL) – the top U-23 league in North America. Founded Nov. 11, 2008, the Timbers U-23s is an amateur team that has produced several first-team players, including Steven Evans, Jake Gleeson and Brent Richards. The Timbers U-23s won the PDL championship in 2010 and have competed in the last two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups.

Rooted in the club’s deep his-tory, the Timbers have a passion for developing youth players and the sport of soccer in the region. Through partnerships estab-lished with Oregon Youth Soccer Asso-ciation (OYSA), and Oregon’s Olympic Development Program (ODP), the Timbers have built a comprehensive vertical develop-ment structure, which will allow players within the club’s development territory a direct path from the youth levels to the top tier of professional soccer in North America - Major League Soccer.

Association and are working to develop a recreational curriculum to complete the club’s development pyramid.

TIMBER CAMPSThe Timbers are proud to offer an exciting camp program for soccer players of all ages and skill levels throughout the state of Oregon and Southwest Washington. Stand Together Snapshot

Portland TimbersCommunity FundIn partnership with Timbers partners adidas, Alaska Air-lines, Burgerville, JELD-WEN Windows & Doors, and PGE, the Community Fund provides grants to nonprofit organiza-tions throughout the Portland metro area focusing on youth programs related to sport, education, fitness and the envi-ronment. The Portland Timbers Community Fund will award $120,000 in grants in 2013.

Stand Together WeekThe Portland Timbers launched city-declared Stand Together Week last October. With the help of sponsors JELD-WEN Windows & Doors, Alaska Airlines, adidas, Fred Meyer and KPTV, hundreds of com-munity members got involved to help nonprofits across the city. Over 75,200 hours in service were given during the week to organizations focused on youth and the environment. Participants were able to work alongside a Portland Timbers player, coach, ambassador or front office staff member.

The Portland Timbers Stand Together mission is to harness the power of sport to improve the lives of children and families in our region through targeted programs, deep partnerships and philanthropic giving. The players, coaches, staff, ambassadors and Timber Joey get involved with the community in a variety of ways. Here are some events and initiatives the club will be involved with during the 2013 season:

Field GrantsEach year, the Portland Tim-bers partner with adidas and the City of Portland to help build and refurbish soccer fields. The Portland Timbers donated $50,000 in 2012, with an additional $10,000 donation from adidas through their Wins for the Community program, to increase access to soccer, sport and recreation through-out the city. Since 2010, $160,000 has been donated to field projects at Parkrose High School, Chapman Elementary School, James John Elementa-ry, Concordia University, Haci-enda Community Development Corporation, Forest Park and Grant High School. Hosford Middle SchoolEnvironmental MakeoverThanks to incredible supporter mobilization, the Timbers were selected as the MLS WORKS/Continental Tire “How Green Are Your Goals?” 2012 contest winners. As a result of winning the league-wide contest, the Timbers are partnering with Hosford Middle Schoo, which will receive a $50,000 solar panel installation as part of an MLS WORKS Earth Day 2013 community service project. Schoolhouse SuppliesEach year, Portland Timbers players, Timber Joey and staff join forces with Schoolhouse Supplies to provide needed school supplies for elementary students in east Portland. As of 2012 the Timbers and The UPS Store have combined efforts to prepare and distrib-ute backpacks to hundreds

Attended by hundreds of youth play-ers, the tournament benefits Grassroot Soccer, Inc., a non-profit aimed at using the power of soccer to prevent and treat HIV in Africa. Participants even get to meet Timber Joey and Timbers players!

Tix for KidsTix for Kids provides the opportunity for local youth to come enjoy a Portland Timbers match free of charge. Thanks to Alaska Airlines, Burgerville, JELD-WEN, KPTV, NW Natural, Providence Health & Services, and PGE, the Tix for Kids program allowed 3,972 youth in 2012 to come watch a match at JELD-WEN field. In 2013 tickets will be available for Timbers and Thorns FC matches.

Active Bodies, Active MindsActive Bodies, Active Minds is an MLS WORKS initiative presented locally by Burger-ville. This assembly program encourages children to live a healthy, active lifestyle and is offered to elementary and

middle schools in the greater Portland area. Timber Joey and alumni ambassador Scot Thompson teach students about fitness, nutrition and education.

Adopt-a-ClubAdopt-a-Club, sponsored by CenturyLink, is a community program where Portland Tim-bers players become mentors to Portland area youth soccer clubs. Participating clubs are selected through an applica-tion process and given the opportunity to participate in clinics during the year.

Friends of Trees – Tree PlantingDuring the 2013 season, the Timbers, JELD-WEN Windows & Doors and Friends of Trees will plant a tree for every goal scored through our Score a Goal, Plant a Tree program. Last year, the Timbers planted over 200 trees in Northeast Portland, bringing our total planted to over 900 trees. Trees in urban areas help to clean the air, curb storm water runoff, raise property values, sequester carbon, and reduce energy costs.

Corporate Cup – Benefitting Portland YouthBuildersThe Portland Timbers will hold the third-annual Portland Tim-bers Corporate Cup in August. This adult soccer tournament brings respected Pacific North-west corporations together for soccer and corporate network-ing. All proceeds will benefit Portland Timbers’ Pillar Partner Portland YouthBuilders, a nonprofit helping low-income youth make long-term positive changes in their lives. Co-ed,

recreational and competitive divisions are offered so teams of all levels can participate. All championship matches are held at JELD-WEN Field.

Big Brothers Big Sisters 3v3 TournamentThis summer, the Portland Timbers will host the first annual 3v3 Tournament at JELD-WEN Field for Pillar Partner Big Brothers Big Sis-ters Columbia Northwest. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children experiencing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the bet-ter, forever.

Portland Thorns FCPortland Thorns FC will connect with the community through Stand Together with a focus on young women. Girls, Inc. of Northwest Oregon is the Portland Thorns nonprofit partner and exists to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold. Community work done by Thorns FC will use sport and activity to support and collaborate with organizations that empower, educate, and build confidence in girls and young women.

adidas Timbers Training Center


On April 19, 2012, the Portland Timbers un-

veiled the new adidas Timbers Training Center, a

state-of-the-art facility, built as part of a 10-year

partnership with Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation

District. The $6 million training center features

a natural-grass field and is the primary on-field

training ground of the Major League Soccer

club.

Some of the features of the adidas Timbers

Training Center include a 7,000-square-foot

indoor facility, with locker rooms for the Timbers

first team and development teams, fully-

equipped training and recently expanded fitness

areas, offices and a spacious lounge/common

area for Timbers players.

The grass field, widely regarded as one of

the best fields in the state, is a combination of

75 percent perennial ryegrass and 25 percent

Kentucky bluegrass that is perfectly suited for

cooler climates and provides uniform cover, and

greater stability, footing and durability.

The adidas Timbers Training Center is located

in Beaverton, approximately 10 minutes from

JELD-WEN Field. It also serves as the training

home for the Timbers’ development teams, spe-

cifically the Timbers U-23s as well as the club’s

U-18 and U-16 Academy teams.

As part of the public/private partnership

with THPRD, the Timbers will make an annual

donation to the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation

and will conduct a series of annual youth soc-

cer camps and coaches’ clinics at the adidas

Timbers Training Center. The training center

includes a synthetic, FieldTurf field designated

for public use.

The grass field was planted in mid-January 2012 from one-year-old sod.

The sod was planted in a vertically draining, sand-based root zone that includes small amounts of peat and calcined clay to stabilize moisture content and to hold nutrients.

The grass field was built using over 4,600 tons of specialty sand blend (383 truckloads) and will drain up to 12 inches of precipitation an hour.

The overall project took 5,240 man hours to complete.
