Against the RapidsSunday’s match between the Timbers and

Rapids marks the 13th meeting between the two Western Conference clubs in the all-time MLS series since 2011. Portland enters the match unbeaten in its last three regular-season games (2-0-1) against Colorado and has lost just once against the Rapids in league play since March 30, 2013. Sunday’s match marks the second meeting between the two clubs during the 2015 season with the Timbers earning a dramatic, 2-1 win at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., on May 30 as midfielder Jack Jewsbury registered the game-winning goal in the final min-ute of second-half stoppage time to lead Port-land to the road win. The Timbers have compiled a 5-5-2 regular-season record against the Rapids since 2011, including a 4-1-0 mark at Providence Park. Additionally, Portland has registered seven goals and three shutouts in five games against Colorado at Providence Park, while holding the Rapids to just two goals.

The Rapids enter Sunday’s match following a midweek game against Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. Head coach Pablo Mastroeni’s side is out of the running for a spot in the postseason after struggling through a 2-6-9 first half of the season.

After earning consecutive road wins over the LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake, the Portland Timbers return to the Rose City for their regu-lar-season finale against the Colorado Rapids on Sunday, Oct. 25, at Providence Park; kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. (Pacific). Sunday’s match will feature a live broadcast on ROOT SPORTS with a local radio broadcast on 750/102.9 The Game and in Spanish on La GranD 93.5 FM. As part of MLS “Decision Day,” all five Western Conference matches on Sunday will kick off concurrently at 4 p.m. (Pacific).

Portland (14-11-8, 50pts) enters Sunday’s match in a tie on points with Vancouver White-caps FC for third place in the tight Western Conference standings with one match remaining on the regular-season schedule. Portland is three points clear of the red line and just one point behind the Galaxy (51pts) in second place. The top two teams in the conference receive au-tomatic bids to the conference semifinal round of the 2015 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, while the No. 3-6 seeds face a one-game knockout match with the higher seeds hosting.

Against the LA Galaxy on Oct. 18, forward Fanendo Adi tallied his fifth multi-goal game of the 2015 season as Portland netted five goals, including four from different players, in a span of 25 minutes in the second half en route to a 5-2 road win at the StubHub Center. With the win against the Galaxy and a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, Portland has registered seven road wins in 2015, which is tied for the most in the league.

The Timbers have earned one of the league’s best records at home since 2013 with a mark of 23-7-20 overall. Portland has posted a record of 7-3-6 overall at home during the 2015 season and has lost just four home games (11-4-8) in their last 23 matches at Providence Park dating

The veteran defender and midfielder, who had been playing in the North American Soccer League (NASL) since 1974, had spent several seasons struggling with injury and had just finished playing a season with an indoor soccer team in Detroit, Mich.

But Fagan, who was then 30 years old and tired of spending time away from his family in Los Angeles, wanted desperately to get back to the West Coast. He spent hours calling NASL club after NASL club — the Vancouver Whitecaps, the San Jose Earth-quakes, the Seattle Sounders — asking for a trial.

Finally, a fortuitous call to the Portland Tim-bers front office resulted in the chance that he’d been waiting for.

The receptionist told Fagan that the team was training down in Southern California for its preseason. She asked him if he could drive out to Anaheim to talk to the coach. Fagan, desperate for the opportunity, didn’t hesitate.

“I played one of the best games I ever played in my life,” Fagan remembered about his tryout. “I hit tens. Just one of those things. I knew I was a decent player, but I was on fire that day.”

Not only did Fagan play some of the best soccer of his career during that tryout, but he was also on the verge of becoming a U.S. citizen. This was a crucial advantage in a league that required each club to feature six American players on a 17-man roster that was typically filled with foreigners.

“Now [Timbers head coach] Vic Crowe is looking at me thinking: ‘I’ve got this English guy, who’s a U.S. citizen, I’ve got to bring him!’” Fagan said.

When Crowe asked Fagan to sign with the club, Fagan immediately put pen to paper, signing a contract to join the Portland Timbers before the team had even left Los Angeles.

was searching

for a club to

call home.

to Detroit, Fagan was more than happy to move his family to Portland and finally put down roots in his adopted country.

“Portland was a special city for me. I loved the city. I took a liking to it right away and I really had a warm feeling playing here,” Fagan said with a laugh.

But when the Timbers ended operations in 1982 — the NASL itself would cease just two years later — Fagan suddenly saw a productive profes-sional career come to an abrupt close. It was time for him and his Timbers teammates to plan their next moves.

Fagan, who had spent years coaching kids on the side, says the choice was simple.

“We were one-trick ponies,” he said of himself and his Timbers teammates. “Soccer is the word. That’s what we can do. But now [in 1982] we’re on the coaching side of things. Not everyone coached before, but I did.”

Today, 35 years later, Fagan still calls the Portland metro area home, having coached at the club level, professional and the collegiate level with Portland State University and Warner Pacific University.

It was Fagan, along with other former Timbers players who got into coaching like Clive Charles, Brian Gant and John Bain, who helped lay the groundwork for the explosion of youth soccer in Oregon.

“It took a while to get it going in Portland, but when some [youth] clubs started, they started to build big attendance and now they’ve got loads of coaches,” Fagan said. “And it flourished. It grew very quickly.”

Having built such a strong foundation, both at the club and collegiate levels, Fagan recently decided to retire from his head coaching position at Warner Pacific. After 26 years there, Fagan says it was time for him to move into another chapter of his life.

“I enjoyed my time with Warner Pacific,” he said. “It was a long time, a long period of time, a long bite out of your life. I made the decision that it was time for me to move back a little bit.”

But knowing Fagan, it won’t be long before the sport he loves comes calling again.

General Manager Gavin Wilkinson

Gavin Wilkinson, a long-time member of the Timbers organization and a former New Zealand international, serves as the club’s General Manager. He first joined the club as a player for the Timbers’ USL First Division side in 2001, before taking over as the head coach and general manager during the club’s final years in the second division from 2007-10.

As general manager, Wilkinson has formed the Timbers’ deeply integrated, vertical development system, which includes newly added United Soccer Leagues club Portland Timbers 2 (T2), the Portland Timbers U-23s and Timbers Academy teams (U-18, U-16 and U-14). He was instrumental in establishing an innovative partnership with Oregon Youth Soccer Association, which encompasses the statewide Olympic Development Program and regional training centers, as well as the adidas Timbers Alliance. Wilkinson also serves as the general manager for Portland Thorns FC, the 2013 National Women’s Soccer League champions.

During his tenure as the club’s general manager and head coach from 2007-10, Wilkinson assembled a 50-29-39 record over four seasons in the USL First Division/USSF Division-2 Pro League and was a two-time USL First Division Coach of the Year (2007, 2009). He guided the club to three postseason berths, including its only semifinals appearances as a sec-ond-division club in 2007 and 2009. As head coach, Wilkinson oversaw Cascadia Cup (a fan-based derby between Portland, Seattle and Van-couver) titles in 2009, 2010 and again in 2012, and was a two-time recipient of the FieldTurf Coach of the Year for the USL First Division (2007, 2009).

24-game unbeaten streak and winning the Commissioner’s Cup. The Timbers set a new single-season, league record with the impressive streak (14-0-10), surpassing the previous mark of 15 games set in 2005. The club’s record-setting run also ranks among the longest in U.S. Soccer history. Finishing in first place at 16-4-10 (58pts), Portland was awarded the Commissioner’s Cup as the league’s regular-season champion and earned a berth into the USL First Division semifinals.

Wilkinson’s 13-year professional playing career included time with clubs in six different countries, includ-ing Portugal, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. A defender, he joined the reborn Timbers for their inaugural United Soccer Leagues season in 2001, playing in each of the club’s first six seasons and serving the dual role as a player/assistant coach from 2005-06. He finished his playing career ranked among the Timbers’ USL franchise career leaders in games (124) and minutes played (10,181).

A New Zealand native, Wilkinson earned 38 caps with the New Zealand National Team and competed in the 1999 and 2003 FIFA Confederations Cups.

Wilkinson, who holds an “A” coach-ing license from U.S. Soccer, founded the youth club Eastside United, based in Gresham, Ore., in 2001. He helped run the club as its coaching director for many years and now serves as an advisor for the club. In 2010, Eastside United FC’s U-18 boys team (’91 Liver-pool) won the U.S. Youth Soccer U-18 national championship and became the first youth club team from Oregon to win a national title since 1994.

He and his wife, Heather, have two children, Kienan and Brooke.

Head coach Caleb Porter enters his third season with the club in 2015 after guiding the Portland Timbers to re-cord-setting campaigns in his first two years in MLS. Guiding the team to an impressive turnaround season and the club’s first-ever MLS postseason appearance in 2013, Porter helped direct a record-setting offense in 2014 as the Timbers netted 61 regu-lar-season goals, a club record across all eras.

He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related fig-ure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014,

Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland.

The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year award winner, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active MLS head coaches with a 26-14-28 mark (.588) after leading Portland to double-digits wins in each of his first two seasons. Under Porter’s guidance, the Timbers have made Providence Park one of the toughest places to play in the league, registering the second-fewest home losses in MLS over the last two seasons with a 16-4-14 regular-season mark at Providence Park since 2013. In 2014, the Timbers netted a team-record 61 goals while compiling one of the highest point totals (44) across the final two-thirds of the regular season – recording the highest goal differential (plus-9) of any non-playoff team in MLS history. made its first appearance in CONCACAF Champions League, contesting matches against Alpha United of Guyana and C.D. Olimpia of Honduras during the competition’s group stage.

During Porter’s first season as head coach in 2013, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS. In comparison to 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improve-ment in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improve-ment in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season and the Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an MLS single-season record 11 home shutouts. In 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA Col-lege Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. As a player at Indiana, he was a three-year captain and led the Hoosiers to four conference titles. Porter was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a de-gree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella.

July 8, outscoring opponents 17-5 during the run. Fans took notice,

too, as the team regularly began to draw crowds in excess of 15,000 for most home games – even seeing 27,310 for a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on July 29. Portland qualified for the playoffs, one of eight teams in the 20-team league to reach the postseason and matched up against regional rival Seattle in the quarterfinals.

Road to Soccer Bowl ’75On the path to the NASL championship match, the Timbers faced off against Seattle in the quarterfinals – earning passage to the semifi-nals off the head of Tony Betts in overtime. As the Sounders failed to clear a corner kick in the 97th minute, Timbers forward Willie Anderson swung in a cross to Betts, unmarked in front of goal, and the midfielder connected on the game-winning header in front of 31,523 fans at Civic Stadium. The Timbers played host to St. Louis in the semifinals before a record crowd of 33,503 in the Rose City and defeated the Stars 1-0 on a goal from Withe to reach Soccer Bowl ’75 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in San Jose. The Rose City magic ran out in the title match as the Timbers sustained a 2-0 loss on Aug. 24, 1975 – ending their first-ever season and sparking a passion for soccer in Portland that still burns strong today.

Coaching Staff 2015

Sean McAuley returns for a fourth season as an assistant coach. He joined the club midway through the 2012 season from English club Sheffield Wednesday FC, where he served as a head coach in the club’s academy. McAuley suited up for the second-division Timbers as a player during the 2002 season.

McAuley began his coaching career at Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 and spent six seasons as the club’s Academy head coach, where he oversaw the development of several youth players who went on to sign with the first team.

A native of Sheffield, England, McAuley played professionally for 15 seasons as a defender from 1990-2005. He started his career with Manchester United and played for Hartlepool United, Scunthorpe United, Rochdale and Halifax Town. McAuley appeared in 16 matches for the Timbers in 2002, logging two assists while helping the club make the postseason.

Cameron Knowles returns for a fourth season as an assistant coach for the Tim-bers. A former defender for the second-division Timbers from 2007-10, Knowles joined the coaching ranks in 2012 after a seven-year professional playing career.

Selected by Real Salt Lake in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft, Knowles played two seasons in MLS before joining the Timbers. In Portland, Knowles was a three-time USL First Division all-league selection and played in 77 games for the club.

From Auckland, New Zealand, Knowles anchored Portland’s backline and played a key role in the Timbers’ USL First Division record-setting, 24-game unbeaten streak in 2009.

Mike Toshack enters his fourth season as the Timbers goalkeeper coach in 2014. He has served as a goalkeeper coach in MLS since 2007, and won MLS Cup with the Houston Dynamo in 2007.

Prior to joining Portland, Toshack was a member of the coaching staffs in Houston (2007-08) and Toronto FC (2009-11). Before working in MLS, the Prescott, Ontario, native was the director of goalkeeping for the Vancouver Whitecaps from 2005-06, helping coach the first team to the USL First Division championship in 2006. Toshack served as an assistant coach with the Montreal Impact from 2002-03.

Jay VidovichAssistant CoachT2 Head Coach

Jay Vidovich enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Timbers, as well as the head coach of Portland’s USL side, Timbers 2 (T2).

One of the most highly regarded soccer coaches at the collegiate level in the United States and an astute developer of talent, Vidovich spent 21 years as a head coach at Wake Forest University from 1994-2014 and an additional eight years as an assistant coach from 1986-93. Under Vidovich’s guidance, Wake Forest reached the NCAA Tournament in 13 of the past 14 seasons and captured five ACC regular-season championships. The program made four consecutive NCAA College Cup appearances from 2006-2009 and won its first NCAA National Championship in 2007.

From Detroit, Mich., Vidovich was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in consecutive seasons (2007, 2008) and compiled a 272-121-50 (.670) overall record in 21 years as head coach at Wake Forest.

The Timbers first-ever MLS Su-perDraft pick in 2011, midfielder Darlington Nagbe is quickly closing in on the club’s all-time record for most appearances across all eras since 1975. Born in Liberia, Nagbe became a U.S. citizen on Sept. 10, while he and his wife are expecting their second child later this year. As of Sept. 9, the Timbers are tied for the fewest home losses during the 2015 regular season. With home matches against the New York Red Bulls (Sept. 20), Sporting Kansas City (Oct. 3) and Colorado Rapids (Oct. 25) remaining on the schedule, Portland has compiled a 7-1-6 overall mark at Providence Park.

Midfielder Diego Valeri, who played his 80th ca-reer match for Portland on Aug. 30, became just the eighth player ever to score 20 or more goals and contribute 30 or more assists in the first 80 games of their MLS career and the second active MLS player to reach the mark, joining LA’s Robbie Keane. Former MLS players to achieve the mark include Preki, Jaime Moreno, Eric Wynalda, Mauricio Cienfuegos, Amado Guevara and fellow Argentine Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

Earlier this year, forward Fanendo Adi became just the third Timbers player to record double-digit goals in a single season. Adi netted his 10th goal of the season on Aug. 7, the game-winning tally in a 1-0 victory against the Chicago Fire. Only midfielder Diego Valeri (2013, 2014) and forward Maximiliano Urruti (2014) have reached the double-digit goals mark for the Timbers since 2011.

Defender Liam Ridgewell has been a steady and reliable presence on the Timbers back line since joining the squad from the Premier League in England in June of 2014. Now more than a full calendar year into his MLS career, the 31-year-old reflects on his experience thus far, his second home in Portland and the growth of the league.

Embracing Portland“I think I’ve settled in and ev-erything is really nice especially when my family comes to visit – I certainly feel at home. It’s always nice to have them in town. When they go, I’m obviously by myself and it’s tough at times, but a lot of people have made me feel wel-come and it’s close to a second home for me. … The kids like to be out on [Lake Oswego] on the boat a lot to go tubing and swim-ming. We’ve been out to Great Wolf Lodge, which they love. My daughter was only asking me the other day if we can go back there. She wants to go back al-ready. Just enjoying the sun and enjoying Oregon to be honest. We made it up to Multnomah Falls and stuff like that. Portland is such a fun city, which is great for having the kids here.”

Better Golf: Portland vs. England“For sure here. Back home you don’t get the weather. It’s probably the hardest thing, you try and bank on the weather being nice but it can suddenly downpour at any time and tip it down. Golfing here for sure is a little bit better.”

Gaining Exposure“We didn’t get to watch [MLS] that much back home, so just bits and bobs that I’ve heard from certain players and I knew it was a high level, but I didn’t know it was as high a level as I’ve found out since I’ve been here. It’s coming on in leaps and bounds and I’m thankful to be a part of it and hopefully to make it better as well. I’m always getting phone calls seeing how I’m doing and seeing what’s going on, asking for a trial and trying to get out here. That’s a good thing I think, everyone asking more questions about the place – that’s how big it’s getting.”

Growing up in her hometown of Malabo in the small central African country of Equa-

torial Guinea, Portland Thorns FC forward Genoveva “Ayo” Añonma dreamed that one day she would become a professional soccer player.

She would often walk out to the soccer fields with her father and watch fascinated as he and the other men battled one another on the pitch. As soon as she was old enough, she told herself, she was going to run out onto those fields herself and play with the boys.

But Ayo’s mother disapproved of the young girl’s newfound passion and did everything she could to keep her daughter away from the sport.

“It was complicated for me starting out because my mom wasn’t thrilled about me playing soccer,” Ayo said through an inter-preter. “I actually got into it by watching the guys play, which I really enjoyed. I would go with my dad and watch the men play football. It wasn’t until I actually left home and went to live with my uncle — it was a tough period for me — that I started playing with the guys my age at the local soccer center.”

All those years spent playing and training with the boys, however, transformed the young Ayo into the greatest soccer talent that her country has ever produced.

The results speak for themselves: two-time African Women’s Championship winner, FIFA Women’s World Cup goal-scorer, member of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup All-Star team, African Women Footballer of the Year in 2012.

PORTLAND TIMBERS 2The level just below the Portland Timbers first team on the pyramid, T2 is Portland’s newest ad-dition to the development structure. Playing their matches in the 24-team USL – T2 was founded on Oct. 14, 2014, and is a fully professional team that creates a bridge between the Portland Timbers U-23s Premier Development League (PDL) side and the Timbers first team. Play-ing their home games at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland, the T2 roster will be comprised of a mix of Timbers first-team players on loan to the club, as well as players that possess many dif-ferent qualities and come from varied backgrounds. As well as players that are familiar with wearing the Timbers crest, some experienced profession-als and young players that can spend time de-veloping for the ultimate purpose of reaching the first team. In December, Jay Vidovich was named as the club’s first head coach for the 2015 USL season. Vidovich will lead T2 after 21 seasons as head coach at Wake Forest University, where he became one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history.

The Timbers Academy provides elite youth players from Oregon and South-west Washington advanced training and competitive opportunities against the best youth players across North America.

Timbers Youth Leagues, Tournaments and CampsThe Timbers and OYSA have formed an innovative partnership, which sees the statewide youth soccer organization become a part of the Timbers’ compre-hensive youth development structure. One of the first of its kind, the partnership between the Timbers and OYSA has established top-tier development oppor-tunities for thousands of Oregon’s youth soccer players through OYSA’s club leagues and tournaments. The Timbers provide OYSA and its clubs resources for coaching education and share best practices in player development, creat-ing a unified development philosophy across the state. The MLS club also is the presenting partner of the Oregon State Cup.

The Timbers offer an exciting camp program for soccer players of all ages and skill levels throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. Each camp is cen-tered on age-appropriate exercises and activities designed to develop technical excellence and build a love for the game.

adidas Timbers Training Center


On April 19, 2012, the Portland Timbers unveiled the new adidas Timbers Training Center, a state-of-the-art facility, built as part of a 10-year partnership with Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation District. The training center features a natural-grass field and is the primary on-field training ground of the Major League Soccer club. Construction is nearly complete on a 2,600-square-foot expansion of the adidas Timbers Training Center. The new space will include additional locker rooms, training areas and office space to serve the Timbers, T2, the Timbers U-23s and the Timbers Academy.

Some of the features of the adidas Timbers Training Center include a 7,000-square-foot indoor facility, with locker rooms for the Timbers first team and development teams, fully-equipped training and recently expanded fitness areas, offices and a spacious lounge/common area for Timbers players.

The grass field, widely regarded as one of the best fields in the state, is a combination of 75 per-cent perennial ryegrass and 25 percent Kentucky bluegrass that is perfectly suited for cooler climates and provides uniform cover, and greater stability, footing and durability.

The adidas Timbers Training Center is located in Beaverton, approximately 10 minutes from Provi-dence Park. It also serves as the training home for the Timbers’ development teams, specifically the Timbers U-23s and the club’s Academy teams.

As part of the public/private partnership with THPRD, the Timbers make an annual donation to the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation and will conduct a series of annual youth soccer camps and coach-es’ clinics at the adidas Timbers Training Center. The training center includes a synthetic, FieldTurf field designated for public use.

A new grass field was planted in February 2015, while a new turf pitch was installed in early 2015. The sod was planted in a vertically draining, sand-based root zone that includes small amounts of peat and calcined clay to stabilize moisture content and to hold nutrient. The grass field was built using over 4,600 tons of specialty sand blend and will drain up to 12 inches of precipitation an hour.
