From the Principal’s Desk

Congratulations to the 29 students who came 2nd in the

regional Annual Science and Engineering Challenge. They

travelled to Kempsey on May 7th, and as the pictures found

later in this newsletter show, they did have some challeng-

es. Mr Dalton, our head teacher Science, wants to have a

similar event at Woolgoolga High School next year.

Thanks to Mrs Dorahy for her efforts in helping with this

competition.

Congratulations also to Jai Johnson, Zane Keighran, Co-

rey Williams and Sam Brown on their impressive efforts at

the Regional Surfing Competition. Similarly, congratula-

tions to our U/15 boys and girls soccer teams who now

progress on to the next round in the soccer knockout

competition. Congratulations also to Jessie Gentle for her

outstanding representation of Woolgoolgs High School at

the recent CHS Soccer carnival. Jessie scored 3 goals

and once again was selected into the CHS (State) shadow

team.

The school cross country was a wet and muddy event.

Thanks to all staff and students who made the event a

success, although it was wet it was a great day! More

information to follow in this newsletter. Good luck to all

zone competitors next Monday.

NAPLAN testing occurred this week and from all accounts

our students were quite happy with their performance.

Our canteen’s new menu is a big hit with both students

and staff. I have heard nothing but positive comments

about the quality and new pricing of the food. The new

menu is on our website http://www.woolgoolga-

h.schools.nsw.edu.au/documents/21717034/21724205/

Canteen%20price%20list.pdf.

Kris Oates, our head teacher TAS, travelled to Sydney last

week to work with Microsoft and senior Department

officials on the new implementation of Office 365. Our

school, both staff and students, have access to Office 365

and soon it will be rolled out to all students across the

state. This is a great professional development opportunity

for Kris and he is already up skilling staff in his new

knowledge. Students can download one copy of Microsoft

Office for their BYOD devices – see our website for details

http://www.woolgoolga-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/parent-

information/bring-your-own-device .

Until next time

Our SMILE program has

once again been placed

in the community

spotlight. As outlined on

the front page of this

newsletter our students

Maddy Weiss, Brittany

Kashayev, Ben Osborn,

Maddy Sadler and Zac

Donnelly showcased our well known

SMILE (student led, student initiated)

student welfare program, to 40 local health

professionals.

There was a hum of excitement from the professionals as

they questioned our students and staff about the

program. Associate Professor John Hurley from Southern

Cross University is to be congratulated on his

presentation of his first hand research of our program.

His conclusions about the positive impact the program is

having in our school were highlighted to the health

professionals. We are very lucky to have such an

involved university in our local area.

Our Careers day held last Wednesday was an

outstanding event. All 160 Year 10 students had the

opportunity to talk with, listen to, receive presentation

from, and ask questions of the 45 employers and

business professionals from the Woolgoolga district, and

wider afield. Thank you to all of the business presenters

who gave freely of their time to help give information,

direction and motivation to our Year 10 students.

The Woolgoolga Chamber of Commerce is also to be

congratulated on organising this event. Ray Willing and

Alastair Milroy, in particular, have given an enormous

amount of time in gathering and encouraging the many

presenters who participated. A thank you should also go

to our staff members—Careers Adviser, Jeff Allen,

Megan Hart and Julie-Anne Chivers for their organisation

at the school level. The event ran like clockwork and both

presenters and students gained a great deal from the

event.

2014 Careers Day a success!

On Wednesday 14th May, 160 students from Year 10 at Woolgoolga High School and 45 members of the

Woolgoolga and Northern Beaches business community participated in the 2014 Careers Day.

Feedback from presenters and students for this massive event in the school calendar was extremely positive,

with all enjoying the 55 sessions organised for the afternoon. Each of the 30 minute sessions catered for an

extensive variety of business and career information, with the opportunity for future connections between stu-

dents and businesses. Students are yet again looking forward to using these connections to organise their

next round of Work Experience scheduled for the last week of this term. As many as 141 Year 10 students

participated in last term's Work Experience, with all of these experiences leading to students making a more

informed decision surrounding their subject selections to be held later in the year, prior to them commencing

their senior schooling.

REGIONAL SURFING COMPETITION

On Thursday the 1st of May I took four boys from Woolgoolga High School to Forster for the Regional

Surfing Competition, which was held at Boomerang Beach; Jai Johnson, Zane Keighran, Corey Williams

and Sam Browne. After arriving on Wednesday afternoon, we unpacked and raced down to Boomerang

for an afternoon surf. We had perfect conditions but unfortunately the surf was quite small. We were all

worried that the surf would be too small on the following day!

We woke the following morning at 5.45am, ate breakfast, and packed the car, headed to One Mile

Beach where we were directed to go to Boomerang Beach further south. We arrived to perfect condi-

tions on the beach. A nice off shore south west breeze and perfect 2 to 4 foot waves. The boys were

excited and didn’t waste any time getting out amongst it before competing.

Corey’s heat was first up and although he got some good waves in the heat, he didn’t progress through

to the next one. Jai and Zane unfortunately had a similar fate in their first heats too. They both selected

some good waves, but were unable to progress through to the second round.

Sam fared better on the day and he progressed through a few rounds to make it to the semi-finals. Con-

ditions deteriorated as the day progressed and in the semi-final the waves didn’t go Sam’s way and he

was outscored finishing 3rd I think.

I would just like to say that I am really proud of all the boys and their efforts on the day. They were all

surfing in older age divisions and against really good surfers from the region. Furthermore, the boys

were gracious in defeat and they were all really well behaved over the two days.

Fingers crossed we have more success next year.

U/15 Boys Soccer

Win

Hard Fought Game

Our U/15 boys soc-

cer team had a great

2-0 win over John

Paul College on Fri-

day 9 May at the

High Street fields in

Woolgoolga.

After a shaky start in which we didn't touch

the ball for the first 3 minutes the boys re-

gained their composure and started to dom-

inate play with Corey Williams breaking

away and scoring at the 6 minute mark. He

did it again at 20 minutes after some out-

standing lead-up work and we went to the

break with a 2-0 lead against the wind.

John Paul had many scoring opportunities in

the first half but these were snuffed out by

brilliant goalkeeping by Jordan Constable-

Love, backed up with sound defence from

Addisen Mallett, Bailey White, Codey John-

ston and Declan Finn.

In the second half the defence and midfield

stepped up a gear and ran hard for the full

30 minutes to keep the opposition out.

More goals might have come but for some

unlucky bounces and near misses. Jordan

pulled off some more incredible saves and

kept a clean sheet, earning himself man-of-

the-match honours.

All round, a gutsy effort from the whole

team and a well-deserved win. Next game

is in Grafton.

A big thank you to Megan Hart who helped

out with transport.

John Morgan, Coach

A convincing 7-0 victory

for U/15 Girls Soccer !

Last Wednesday, 7th of May, the under 15

girls school soccer team competed in round

2 of the Bill Turner Trophy against Orara

High School .

The first goal came in the 15th minute

when Jade Egar placed a through ball to a

speedy Tanisha Wallace who slotted the

ball past the keeper.

The next goal came only 5minutes later when Innogen Armitage

made an accurate free kick straight to Jade who took on her de-

fender and crossed the ball back to Chelsea Mallett to score an

impressive second goal.

The third goal came in the 25th minute when Jade yet again

crossed a brilliant ball to Chelsea who scored from the top of the

box, taking the team into the halftime break 3 nil up.

The second half started slow but in the 13th minute of the half

there was a scramble in front of Orara's goal, leaving Chelsea to

walk away with a hat trick, and the team to fire up.

Only 2minutes later Tanisha decided to show Orara her skills

when she skinned the Orara defence down the right wing, bring-

ing the ball back in to score with ease.

With 10 minutes left in the game Sophie Buller came out of the

goal to have a run, taking a corner in the 25th minute and getting

Tanisha her 3rd goal for the game.

The final goal came in the last minute of the game when Sophie

took a brilliant free kick, spotting Jade free out on the right wing,

Jade controlled the ball and took the shot to give Woolgoolga

High a 7-0 victory.

The entire team made an impressive effort to come away with a 7

-0 victory, the back line Gabi Dowler, Aleisha Bradbury, Abby

Nudd and Aimee Carr held strong, stopping the Orara girls from

getting any chance to shoot. While Innogen Armitage, Zoe Batty,

Mia Windred and Jordon Henderson-Smith carved up the mid-

field to help the girls up front dominate!

Congratulation girls, you played a great game and came away

with the victory. Looking forward to the next match.

Kids, social media and privacy

Regardless of your child’s age, the world may

already know a lot more about them than you

suspect. According to recent research:

92% of children under the age of 2 have a digital shadow (- it starts with proud parents posting newborn baby photos on Facebook or Instagram)

a quarter of Australian children 8 - 12 years old use Facebook, but the minimum age for a user is 13 years.

more than 20 per cent of tweens publish photos of themselves on Instagram

young people 14 - 19 have an average of 453 fans, friends or followers on social media.

2014 Privacy Awareness Week,

4 - 10 May 2014, is a good time to

review your family’s privacy settings

and discuss online security. You’ll

find lots of practical information and

resources to share with your kids at

www.ipc.nsw.gov.au

Is your child’s backpack damaging their spine?

A recent Australian study has shown that approximately 25% of

school-aged children suffer from back and/or neck pain at any

one time. It’s believed to be due to a combination of factors such

as poor posture, everyday load carrying and the use of comput-

ers.

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead suggests young people should:

not carry more than 10% of their body weight

use a backpack with the straps over both shoulders and a

waist strap

load gear so that the heavier objects are nearer to the spine,

with the lighter objects towards the front of the pack lift a backpack properly- bend at the knees and lift the pack with both hands

English refresher from School A to Z on Homonyms Homonyms (also known as homographs) are words that are identical in pronunciation and spelling but have dif-ferent meanings. They can be nouns, adjectives or verbs. The context gives them their meaning. Ask your child for an example, like this one: I prefer a fine tip on my pen. He gave me a tip for the Melbourne Cup. Don’t tip the water on the floor. You gave the waiter a generous tip. More grammar tips at www.SchoolAtoZ.com.au/homework-and-study/english
