Projects in the development phase must balance increased well complexity with a desire to reduce drilling and completion costs. EXPLORATION: Seismic imaging in narrow mini-basins Sand identification DRILLING: Narrow drilling margin Borehole stability challenges Complex well trajectories in development projects Improving drilling efficiency COMPLETION AND PRODUCTION: Unconsolidated formations Cross flow between wells due to extensive faulting Production declines that must be offset with methods to enhance recovery Lower Tertiary The LowerTertiary trend is generally characterized by older sediments with lower porosities, ultra-deepwater depths, reservoir depths greater than 26,000 ft and high bottomhole pressures. EXPLORATION: Limited geologic/analogue well information Lack of reservoir modeling DRILLING: High well costs Narrow drilling margin Extreme reservoir depth COMPLETION AND PRODUCTION: High completion cost Low reservoir porosity and variances in permeability Economic challenges due to reservoir quality and flow capability Salt Canopy The extensive Salt Canopy greatly impacts seismic imaging quality. Salt bodies present unique well planning demands, slow drilling progress and require highly engineered completion solutions to ensure long-term well productivity. EXPLORATION: Seismic attenuation Depth imaging below salt Defining base of salt Locating and identifying inclusions DRILLING: Drilling optimization through salt High vibration and shock Salt exit strategy Unexpected “tar” deposits COMPLETION AND PRODUCTION: Casing size limitations Salt creep Reservoir compartmentalization Reservoir compaction with pressure depletion Halliburton Answers The complex challenges presented by the Miocene and LowerTertiary trends, coupled with the Salt Canopy in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, are immense. This table merely sug- gests a few. The answers are equally complex. Shaped by geologic and economic extremes, they require an all-inclusive perspective that leverages every capability across all disciplines. Success in deepwater environments also calls for a service company with reliable and proven technology, along with the experience and customer commitment to achieve efficiencies through the entire process, for the life of the well. At Halliburton, we understand the critical operating challenges presented in these tough environ- ments. Join us at www.halliburton.com for an in-depth look at how we can help you succeed in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Miocene

Targets in the deepwater Miocenetrend have generally been influencedby salt intrusion, making reservoirgeology difficult to understand.Projects in the development phasemust balance increased wellcomplexity with a desire to reducedrilling and completion costs.

EXPLORATION:• Seismic imaging in narrow

mini-basins• Sand identification

DRILLING:• Narrow drilling margin• Borehole stability challenges• Complex well trajectories in

development projects• Improving drilling efficiency

COMPLETION AND PRODUCTION:• Unconsolidated formations• Cross flow between wells

due to extensive faulting• Production declines that

must be offset with methodsto enhance recovery

Lower Tertiary

The LowerTertiary trend is generallycharacterized by older sediments withlower porosities, ultra-deepwaterdepths, reservoir depths greater than26,000 ft and high bottomholepressures.

EXPLORATION:• Limited geologic/analogue

well information• Lack of reservoir modeling

DRILLING:• High well costs• Narrow drilling margin• Extreme reservoir depth

COMPLETION AND PRODUCTION:• High completion cost• Low reservoir porosity and

variances in permeability• Economic challenges due to

reservoir quality and flowcapability

Salt Canopy

The extensive Salt Canopy greatlyimpacts seismic imaging quality.Salt bodies present unique wellplanning demands, slow drillingprogress and require highlyengineered completion solutions toensure long-term well productivity.

EXPLORATION:• Seismic attenuation• Depth imaging below salt• Defining base of salt• Locating and identifying inclusions

DRILLING:• Drilling optimization through salt• High vibration and shock• Salt exit strategy• Unexpected “tar” deposits

COMPLETION AND PRODUCTION:• Casing size limitations• Salt creep• Reservoir compartmentalization• Reservoir compaction with

pressure depletion

Halliburton Answers

The complex challenges presentedby the Miocene and LowerTertiarytrends, coupled with the Salt Canopyin the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, areimmense. This table merely sug-gests a few.

The answers are equally complex.Shaped by geologic and economicextremes, they require an all-inclusiveperspective that leverages everycapability across all disciplines.

Success in deepwater environmentsalso calls for a service company withreliable and proven technology, alongwith the experience and customercommitment to achieve efficienciesthrough the entire process, for thelife of the well.

At Halliburton, we understandthe critical operating challengespresented in these tough environ-ments. Join us at www.halliburton.comfor an in-depth look at how we canhelp you succeed in the deepwaterGulf of Mexico.
