Welcome to the second edition of good news, our online magazine for keeping you in touch with the good news within the King’s local community. Again, I reflect on the amazing sphere of influence this college has had within the community and the lives of many students, parents and staff members. It has been a pleasure hearing about past students who have learnt life skills and experienced growth, friendship and encouragement during their time at King’s. King’s ambition is to develop Christian leaders who are influential in their communities and with the many stories we hear, graduates are certainly doing this. Be reminded of the vision of this magazine, to be a link to King’s no maer the distance, time or change between you and the college. Please embrace the good news of this edition, “like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land” (Proverbs 25:25). TRANSCRIPT

Welcometo the second edition of good news, our online magazine for keeping you in touch with the good news within the King’s local community.

Be reminded of the vision of this magazine, to be a link to King’s no matter the distance, time or change between you and the college. Please embrace the good news of this edition, “like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land” (Proverbs 25:25).

EditorialEdition 2 of good news means a more exciting and ‘jam-packed’ edition, full of exciting stories and events from the year thus far. The Class of 2000 had a great night for their 10 Year Reunion as did the King’s parents and staff at our extravagant Gala Dinner! We also had a lovely Easter Arts Festival with an exciting feature artist, photographer Steve Parish.

We have peaked into the exciting lives of some past students. Megan Aney (2006), David Fairburn (2000), Matthew Corbitt (2009) and Sally Tullberg (nee Tuxford) (1995) all share on the amazing, different and challenging journeys that life has taken them on so far.

Please enjoy the photos and if you have a story to share, please contact me.

From the PrincipalRees Davis Welcome to the second edition of the good news . What an exciting year we have had at King’s so far. The premier social event of the year, our magnificent Gala Dinner was held in August. It was a wonderful night for the school community to celebrate our 30th year of distinctly Christian education.

We are also progressing on our computing journey as we will soon launch our 1:1 student laptop program throughout the school. This is an exciting development for preparing students for the future. We have also undergone building developments throughout the school campus with a new lower primary resource centre (pictured above) and a new primary classroom block.

I hope you enjoy reading about the exciting lives that our graduates have gone on to live, and if you have not had the opportunity to visit King’s for a while, I encourage you to come to one of our events such as the Christmas Carols, Open Day or Carnival Day.

An Australian WintourMegan Aney - Class of 2006 Megan Aney made her mark in the dance and drama department while at King’s but has since taken a very different career path. “First year out of high school I had an accident while dancing that forced me to leave the stage for good”, Megan recalls. “In the time I spent recovering God revealed a plan and purpose for my life that I’m living in successfully today.”

Since her career change Megan has gone on to become one of Australia’s most recognized fashion bloggers and has completed a communications degree at Griffith University. In 2009, her blog ‘An Australian Wintour’ nominated her for Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Woman of the Year Awards. Since then she has also been chosen as one of The Gold Coast Bulletin’s 50 Best Dressed Women and a nominee for the most stylish woman in Queensland. She has been interviewed about her writing by The Gold Coast Bulletin, Style Magazine, Hot Tomato and numerous online publications.

Megan remembers her time at Kings as taking the right stepping stones into becoming who God has called her to be. “Without the wisdom training, the attitude of diligence and perseverance and the faith building that I was taught at King’s I don’t know how I would survive in the cut throat world of fashion.” Megan has planned to move to Sydney in the coming months to pursue her career in fashion journalism.

Class of 2000 National Corporate Accounts Manager (QLD) for Reward Distribution, David Fairburn, has come a long way over the 8 years he has been with the company. “I started in the showroom with a job that I did not really want, but I soon realised how great it was to be a part of a competitive Australian company and a great team”, says David.

“I have always wanted to do the best I can and did not just want to be stuck in one job and ride it for the rest of my life”, says David. He won the Runner Up Salesperson of the Year 2009/10 award earlier this year out of 130 account managers.

David recalls, “school taught me not to settle with second best and to always strive to do my best. Coming from a private school, I was able to present myself in a professional manner – this is the motto of our company”.

“I have always been interested in business and have ambitions to go back to study, travel and continue to further my career in the distribution industry”, says David.

Matthew Corbitt

Scoring Record RunsClass of 2009Matthew Corbitt (2009) found his love for baseball at the very young age of 6 years old. Since then, he has trained and committed tirelessly to progress through the age groups and divisions within the sport.

Currently, Matthew is living in Iowa, USA where he was awarded a 4 year sporting scholarship with a chance to draft into a professional team in his final years. He is studying a Chemistry degree and also boasts that he is the only Australian to have ever attended this particular university.

Matthew’s biggest and proudest moment was playing at the World Under 19’s Baseball Championships in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada earlier this year, where he was one of 20 boys to make the Australian team. As the underdogs, his team had 5 wins and 3 losses to win silver (2nd place). “Our team ‘actually’ made history ... Baseball is not a very popular sport (in Australia) compared to others, but we beat all the odds of favoured teams”, says Matthew.

He laughs, “when we played against USA, their starting pitcher was worth US$750,000, our team would barely make $200,000 in total”. Matthew believes that it was the greatest experience ‘ever’ to put on the Australian jersey and be a part of something that only a handful of people get to do.

Matthew’s team had more than odds against them when they encountered numerous flight delays and jetlag to miss their practice games for the championship. “We had to play our first game after only 24 hours of being in Canada and after 36 hours of travelling”. “But it was an amazing experience and I have made friends for life”.

During his time at King’s, Matthew was always heavily involved in sport. “King’s taught me to always remember where I came from... it can be easy to get ‘big headed’, but I will always be myself and encourage others to also follow their dreams.” “My motto is, ‘go hard or go home’”.

Class of 1995 Sally Tullberg (nee Tuxford) who graduated from King’s in 1995 has written a cookbook with her friend Amanda Trapnell. They talked about writing this book for most of 2008 and finally in October that year, decided to stop talking and get writing. The first meeting of Kaotic Kitchen took place at Amanda’s, then every week after that. At first, their husbands thought the meetings were just an excuse to get out of the house, but were soon proven wrong when they saw the work that was being produced in the few hours every Thursday night. The result, twelve months later is a fresh and enjoyable cookbook that is dedicated to providing new and flavorsome creations from the basics everyone has in the freezer. It provides a delicate balance between affordability, cookability and eatabliity. The book is called ‘Kaotic Kitchen – Mince and Sausages’, it hit the market just before Christmas in 2009 and has been met with overwhelming success and praise. They have been invited to present at a children’s workshop for Playgroup Qld and have even had the book featured on Ready Steady Cook.

Sally recalls her fondest memory of King’s, “I look back and think how lucky I was to be part of such a close knit bunch of people”. “Peer pressure to make the wrong choice was minimal and the support and respect from the teachers have really made me who I am today”, says Sally.

Class of 2000The Class of 2000 celebrated their 10 Year Reunion on Saturday 31 July this year. The evening was a wonderful chance for past students, their partners and staff members to reflect on the memories of their final years of school. Past students had the opportunity to share their life experiences whilst Miss Venessa Lean made sure they remembered some of the more embarrassing stories of school days.

Thank you to everyone who came and made it a great night. We look forward to hearing your stories in the next ten years. God bless.
