Page 3: Global Training Program

The curriculum is based on a broad understanding of the paint-making process, from start to finish. With practical application sessions and facility tours, the program assures a comprehensive experience for anyone involved in the use or procurement of aerospace coatings.

Meeting the needs of the customer is the driving force behind the Global Training Program. The curriculum is designed to be flexible to ensure it suits individual customer requirements as well as the technical expertise of the individual delegate.

The instructorsExperts in their respective fields, the instructors who lead each component of the training program create an effective learning environment, where all delegates can profit from discussion about the subject being presented and the lessons learned.

The instructional staff includes:

• Degreed chemists experienced in aerospace coatings research and formulation

• Process engineers dedicated to high performance chemical manufacturing operations

• Chemists specializing in quality assurance and quality control

• Technical representatives with decades of experience in painting aircraft, and sales and marketing professionals working with customers, OEMs and maintenance contractors from around the world.

The delegatesThe theoretical and practical presentations and demonstrations offered are beneficial to anyone within the industry who seeks an overall understanding of paint and the processes involved in its production and application.

Delegates come from a variety of key job functions within the industry, including paint shops, engineering, quality control, purchasing and management.

Delegates may include:

• Executives or engineers who want a better understanding of aerospace coatings technology

• Purchasing staff who seek additional information about the products being purchased and how they are used

• Experienced painters eager to learn evolving coating technologies and techniques, or painters who are new to the industry and wish to learn from those who have developed the materials they will be using.

‘I would like to highlight the great professionalism and empathy you and your colleagues had during the training course we attended. Your attitude in sharing with us the theory behind painting and your personal experience gave the class a real added value; a very well done course indeed.’

A selection of topics included in this modular training program may include:

Introduction of AkzoNobel Aerospace CoatingsA brief impression of where it all began gives delegates an understanding of emerging technologies. This module covers the development of paint technology from its origin to present day and an outlook for the future.

Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE)This module includes a basic understanding of material handling and safety involving chemicals used in paint manufacturing and application. Our concern for the welfare of our customers and for the environment is also covered in other areas of the curriculum, including Coatings Formulation.

Coatings Formulation/CompositionEach ingredient controls a specific functionality or property of the finished product. Basic concepts of paint composition are discussed. AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings chemists strive to find the perfect balance of each ingredient to provide attendees with an insight into their role in coatings development.

ColorColor plays a central role in our everyday lives, but each person sees color differently. This phenomenon and its practical implications are explained and examples are given as to how this complicated issue can be approached in a scientific way.

The AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings training program may be customized to suit individual customer requirements. Presented through the voice of the customer, in an informal atmosphere with constant interaction, you will be able to obtain answers to your specific questions and compare current methods and applications with those implemented by other leaders in the industry.

AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings Product Range, OEM and Maintenance SystemsThe OEM and Maintenance environments each have their own challenges and requirements. Key AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings products and their development for specific use are discussed.

Manufacturing and Laboratory FacilitiesA tour of the facilities provides an overview of production capabilities and an impression of the complex processing involved in paint production.

A visit to the Quality Control lab emphasizes the importance of quality in our product range.

Specifications and TestingOEMs define aerospace product requirements in specifications. This module gives a basic introduction to what specifications are and the

extensive testing required to ensure a product is in compliance. An

overview of quality and continuous improvement practices is also

covered.

Technical DocumentationTechnical data sheets provide valuable information. We will review data sheet topics, including the importance of understanding the technical data sheets, process manuals, mixing guides and painter sheets, with a process approach.

Spray Application & Common DefectsProblems that occur during the painting of an aircraft are discussed. The importance of teamwork, dedication, experience, appropriate tools and equipment are highlighted.

Practical issues in paint application are explored in-depth, and best practices from our customers around the world are shared, including their methods and choice of equipment.

ApplicationAs this is the real practical part of the program, we demonstrate how to properly apply aerospace coatings and how to diagnose and correct problems that may occur.

During this hands-on session, delegates apply several products. Different types of spray equipment are used and discussed.

CompositesComposite substrates are being used more in the aerospace industry. A short overview will explain the different types of composites and the coatings systems used on them. Common defects in composites and their coating systems will also be discussed, and possible solutions are presented.

New DevelopmentsIn addition to new challenging technical requirements, there is also growing demand for HSE compliant products. In this module, current development initiatives are highlighted. Characteristics of different technologies are also illustrated and discussed including waterborne, high solids and conventional materials. Logistics, quality and the voice of the customer is an important part of our product technology development.
