Did you know:

• 1 billion people in the world live on less than one dollar a day.

• 15 out of every 100 children inSub-Saharan Africa die before they reach the age of five.

• Malaria still kills millions of people every year, mostly children, because of conditions of extreme poverty.

• In the time it takes you to read this, another 2 people on our planet will have died from starvation.

Where are the poorest places on earth?

This map shows the global distribution of populations living in extreme poverty with the highest concentrations in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, Mongolia, India, the Middle East and parts of Central and South America.

Poverty in America

Though North America fares better than much of the rest of the world, we still have our share of poverty. There are

currently 5.7 million children in America living on less than $7 per

day. The southern states account for 42% of these children, including the state with the greatest number,

Mississippi.

Major Causes of Extreme Poverty:

• Hunger and malnutrition• Limited access to quality healthcare• Insufficient access to sanitary water• Limited education

Who is Most Vulnerable:

• Socially excluded groups• Populations living in remote areas far from markets, schools, and healthcare facilities• Those with little education or assets

Why Should We Care?

Effects of Poverty:

• High mortality rates

• Increased health risks and perpetuation of epidemics such as HIV/AIDS and Malaria

• Hampers children’s ability to grow and develop properly and contributes to a cycle of poverty

• Inhibits education and social advancement

• Increases armed conflict
