A message from Superintendent Horton  Dear GFW Family,   We are excited to welcome and serve all students for the 2020-21 academic school year. This school year will undoubtedly be different from any other school year we have experienced as families, students, and staff; however, I have been amazed by the dedication of our entire community to unite around our schools, and I have no doubt it my mind that our community will not only persevere through the challenges ahead, but thrive.  Our school staff have been working tirelessly with the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota Department of Health throughout the summer to prepare for the school year. The outcome of this work is three learning models that GFW will use throughout the 2021 academic school year: in-person, hybrid, and distance learning. We are happy to announce that we have enough space in our buildings to allow all students to return every day, all day in both the in-person and hybrid models. In the simplest of definitions, GFW’s hybrid model is all students coming to school everyday, all day with additional social distancing. For families who are not able or ready to return, they may select distance learning as an option. Our Back to School Plan documents the details of each of the models.  The safety of our students, staff, and community is at the center of our Back to School Plan . We will be continually monitoring state, county, and local data as well as partnering with public health officials to make decisions. We ask that families stay flexible as we monitor and adjust to the data. This means we may need to change from one model to another model during the academic school year; we may also need to update the details within each model in order to respond to new executive orders, guidance, and data. We will make every effort to communicate and support our community during this challenging time.  I believe our staff can and will provide a great education for our students this year that will meet the academic and social emotional needs of our students.  We look forward to a successful year!  Sincerely,  Jeff Horton

Introduction  Introduction: Many aspects of School will look different in 2020-2021 than it did in the past. At GFW Schools, we want parents to be informed about the goals and expectations of everyone as we work together to make sure that students are safe and are still able to reach their potential within the limitations that COVID-19 has placed on everyone. This will take a partnership between the school, parents, community members, and service providers. We are grateful that your children are part of our district and look forward to working with you in the coming year.

Purpose

Purpose: To communicate to parents, staff, and students the vision of what school will look like at GFW School District in 2020-2021. This includes what instruction will look like, safety protocols put in place, and the expectations of parents, students and staff during this time.

A Message From the Principal   Dear Students, Staff, and Families,   I am honored to serve as your Principal this year. This plan prepared for all you could not have been made without the diligence and meticulous attention to detail I have witnessed from the wonderful staff here at GFW Junior and Senior High School. Even with all of that precise attention to detail, these plans are not perfect, and that is because no one here has ever gone through a global pandemic before. As we navigate this year together, please know that safety, equity, and responsibility are my top priorities to lead GFW Junior and Senior High School. I ask your help to support and encourage each other. Our students, staff, and families are doing the absolute best we can give in a hard situation. We are going to work hard this year, but I know we are going to have a lot of fun too. The best part of these plans is that we get to be together again. If you have questions, concerns, or need conversation please do not hesitate to connect with me. I look forward to kicking this year off with all of you very soon.   Sincerely,   Brittany Galetka

Safe Learning Plan  On July 27th the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) laid out their Safe Learning Plan for the 2020-2021 school year. The plan takes into account county caseload per ten thousand resident data within the district and allows school districts to make decisions about learning plans based on the data using a five step process.

Districts examine the county caseload rate and use the following numbers to guide the learning model.

Junior and Senior High School Procedures

Open House:

● Two Days of Scheduled Appointments with Homeroom Teachers: The plan is to take two days where all families will be invited to attend pre-scheduled open house conferences with the student’s homeroom teacher. During these conferences, students and their families will be able to meet with the teacher to discuss academic goals, pick up school-issued devices, and walk through the student’s daily schedule. This is also a time to schedule IEP or other important meetings. Staff members who do not have a homeroom are asked to help wherever needed around the building.

● Dates and Times:  ○ Tuesday 11-7 ○ Wednesday 8-3:05 ○ 20 minute sessions 5 minutes to clean in between

Bell Schedule: GFW Jr./ Sr. High School will run the same bell schedule 5 days a week. This is different from years past when there was an intervention schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The reason for this change is to keep things as simple as possible when school starts. This is also going to provide longer class periods to allow for teachers to incorporate cleaning into the beginning and end of their lessons as well as staggered dismissal times.  Homeroom: Coming soon! We are working on a plan to add Homeroom into the schedule.   Learning Pods: In order to accommodate 50% of our students in the classroom, guidance set forth by the State of Minnesota Department of Health, we will be offering Learning Pods throughout our building. Learning Pods are supervised learning spaces for students to continue to engage in their classwork outside of the classroom.

● When do Students go to the Learning Pods?

○ Students will go to the designated Learning Pod when the classroom they are scheduled to be in is at full (50%) capacity

○ Teachers may decide to send students to the Learning Pod when they are meeting with half of the class at a time. The teacher could also switch who is in the learning pod half way through the period.

 ● Learning Pod Locations There will be two designated larger learning pods placed

throughout the building. One will be the Library upstairs for students in grades 6-8 and the other in the basement for students 9-12.

Fostering Lifelong Learners in a Caring Environment

Page 7: GFW Junior and Senior High School Return to School Guide · prepare for the school year. The outcome of this work is three learning models that GFW will use throughout the 2021 academic

7

○ Library: The Library Learning Pod will be supervised by the health aid in the new Health Office in the Library.

 ○ Basement: The basement Learning Pod will be supervised by the study hall

supervisor during that period. Therefore, all study halls will be held in the basement.

■ Students in study hall will only be allowed to leave if they have a pass from a teacher requesting their attendance in another area of the school. Therefore, no student will be allowed to check themselves out of the study hall to work in any other part of the building.

○ When supervising in the common areas like the cafeteria, library, or learning pods, ensure that students are social distancing and disinfecting once they leave a location.

Lockers: Students will be able to use lockers before school and after. During the day students will be encouraged to use their backpacks. It is important that students do not loiter in the hallways at their lockers.  Backpacks: This will be a change to the student handbook in order to allow students to use their backpacks during school hours. It is necessary for students to have their backpacks with them. Their device will be better protected in their backpacks. Students will be able to store items such as an extra mask and hand sanitizer in their backpacks.   Routines

● Morning Routines:  ○ Students will still be allowed to attend morning activities utilizing the early

bus. ■ These students must however be under the supervision of a teacher

to be allowed in the building. This includes activities, weight room, or scheduled conferences/ tutoring with a teacher.

○ Students will be allowed to attend breakfast but they need to stay in the cafeteria while eating and until the bell rings to go to class.

○ Finally, as students begin to arrive from the buses they will be ushered into the auditorium/ basement to wait until the bell rings.

 ○ Students will be discouraged to come into the building any earlier than

needed at this time.

● Lunch Routines:

○ Lunch will be provided for 6th-grade students starting at 10:40 am. These students will be allowed to eat in the cafeteria until 11:10. The 6th-grade teachers will drop off and pick their students up from the cafeteria.

○ 7-9th grade students will have first lunch overlapping the 6th grade lunch by a few minutes. The 7-9th grade lunch will be from 10:58 until 11:28. The students first in line will be ushered to the auditorium where desks will be set up on the stage for them to eat on. Once the auditorium is at capacity the students will begin to fill up the cafeteria once the 6th-grade students are dismissed and the tables are cleaned.

○ 10-12th grade students will have second lunch from 11:51-12:21 filling up the cafeteria and the auditorium.

○ 12th-grade students will be allowed to have an open campus during lunchtime.

○ All students will have the option to go outside, using the south doors by the shop during the lunch period.

 ● After School Routines:

○ Only students attending a supervised athletics, activity, or a scheduled conference or tutoring session with a teacher may remain in the building after the final bell.

Description of Learning Models at  GFW Junior and Senior High School

Model 1: IN-PERSON LEARNING FOR ALL STUDENTS Please note that parents who are uncomfortable sending students back to school during this learning model may request distance learning as an alternative.  Guiding Principles

● Provide in-person instruction for all students as much as possible ● Provide a distance learning option for 6-12 students ● Prepare to shift between delivery models at any time due to COVID-19. ● Ensure equity in school programs and practices so that all students reach their

potential and thrive socially, academically and emotionally.  In Person Learning

● Students return to the school building in person ● Staff creates as much distancing as is feasible between teachers and students but

are not held strictly to the six feet distancing during primary instructional time. ● Bussing--provide as much space between riders as possible recognizing that it may

not always be possible to provide six feet of distancing on the bus. ● Students will eat in staggered times utilizing multiple spaces including the cafeteria,

stage in cafeteria and the stage in the auditorium. Students may remove their masks to eat.

● Students will be kept within their classroom or Learning Pods during instructional time. Students will rotate classes but teachers will utilize staggered dismissal to control the number of students in the hallways at one time.

● Six feet distancing will be marked by T-Birds on the floor as reminders for everyone.

Grading Best Practices

● The emphasis for schoolwork assigned, reviewed, and completed is on learning, not on compliance.

● Grading should focus on the continuation of learning and prioritize the connectedness and care for students and staff.

● Determine what is the purpose of the work and what should be graded; consider mastery of essential learning standards. Not everything requires grading.

● Provide clear expectations for grading criteria of learning standards. ● Look for opportunities to use more performance-based projects and tasks

(assessed by rubrics). ● Encourage students to take an active role in tracking, assessing, and reflecting on

their learning. ● In conjunction with grading, ensure you have a system for providing students with

ongoing feedback, which facilitates learning. ● All students should have the opportunity to redo, make up, or try again to

complete, show progress, or attempt to complete work, as appropriate.

Parent/Guardian Commitments

● Conduct a student wellness check including temperature prior to sending a student to school. Students with a temperature over 100°F should stay home. POLICY: Students need to be excluded until fever free without the use of medications (Tylenol, Advil) for 48 hours.

● Contact the school office at 507-207-2250 if your child will be absent from school. ● Students should stay home if:

1. They have tested positive, are waiting for a test result, or are showing COVID-19 symptoms, until they meet criteria for return. (www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/waiting.pdf).

2. They have recently had been within 6 feet for 15 min or more of someone with COVID contact with a person with COVID-19, until they meet criteria for return. See--What To Do if You Have Had Close Contact With a Person With COVID-19. (www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/contact.pdf)

3. Follow the MDH Decision Tree for People with COVID-19 Symptoms in Youth, Student, and Child Care Programs to determine who must stay home and when staff or students may return.

● GFW School District requires that all students (K-12) wear face masks/covering while at school and while riding on school transportation. Facemasks will be required at all times in the GFW Elementary school per MN Executive order 20-81. Types of allowable face coverings include: Paper or disposable mask, cloth face mask, scarf, bandanna, religious face covering. The covering should cover the nose and mouth completely, should not be overly tight or restrictive, and should

feel comfortable to wear. Face coverings should not be placed on anyone under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing or is unconscious, anyone who is incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the face covering without assistance, or anyone who cannot tolerate a face covering due to a developmental, medical, or behavioral health condition. As an additional option, face shields may be worn as an alternative to masks in some of these conditions.

● GFW Junior and Senior High School will provide a facemask one mask for each student as well as staff members.

● Parents should also provide their child with a mask and help clean their masks.  ● If a student forgets their mask the school will provide a disposable mask. ● Provide your child(ren) with a water bottle (non-glass) as water fountains will not

be available for use. ● It is preferred that you call or email the building and see if your question can be

answered through email, phone or by using a virtual platform like Google Meet.  ● Ensure that your child(ren)’s contact information and medical information is

updated through the online forms process within the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.

● Ensure that parent/ guardian’s email is on file for safety and proper communication.

● Review and sign confidentiality agreement.  ● Ensure that emergency contacts have been designated and pre-arranged methods

of getting a student home from school should they become ill or exhibit symptoms.

● Parents/ Guardians will not be permitted to come into the school 30 minutes before or after school without an appointment.

● Support the district in reminding your student to follow physical distancing recommendations and talk to your child(ren) about wearing masks prior to the start of school.

● Read all communication from the District, Building Principal, and Teachers. ● Walkers should not arrive or be dropped off any earlier than 7:55 am. ● Students may enter the building using any door before the bell rings however

once the bell rings at 8:18 the doors will be locked and the students will have to enter through the front doors only.

● We encourage parents to drive their student(s) to school if at all possible. Social distancing on the bus cannot be guaranteed.

● Parents will review the Student/Parent Handbook paying close attention to Internet Acceptable Use Policy (pg. 31)
