Federal Service Language Academy

The University of North Georgia (UNG) will host the sixth summer language academy for high school rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors in June and July 2016. The Federal Service Language Academy (FSLA) is a three-week residential program for students interested in an immersive intensive language experience, fitness, and exploring international-related careers with the federal government. Last year 120 students from over 32 US states and three foreign countries suc-cessfully completed FSLA. During the two three-week sessions, students will be immersed in intensive language instruction in First-Year Arabic, Chinese, Russian, German, Korean, Portuguese or Second-Year Arabic, Chinese, Russian, German, Korean, and Portuguese from highly qualified teachers, par-ticipate in a daily fitness program, receive career counseling from fed-eral agency representatives (possible agencies include the CIA, DEA, FBI, State Department, Homeland Security, the Peace Corps and US Armed Forces), and possibly receive high school credit for successful completion of the academy. We will also offer First-Year Japanese and First-Year Cherokee this summer. We are also pleased to announce the addition of FSLA Germany 2016 in Berlin and FSLA France 2016 in Angers, a three-week (July 01-23) language immersion experience. International Skills Diploma Seal

The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) announces the launch of a new initiative, the International Skills Diploma Seal. In the 21st century, the world seems to be shrinking and global markets are only a few key-strokes away. In Georgia, we have more than 3,000 international companies that employ approximately 175,000 people. Another 2,500 companies are affiliated with these international businesses. We know that international trade is good for Georgia companies: it increases productivity and growth and provides a competitive edge. But with an accelerating global economy, our personal worlds are expanding: Communicating and interacting with people from all over the world has become increasingly important whether you work abroad or right here at home in Geor-gia. It is our task to educate and prepare our students to become 21st century learners. A 21st century learner is a global citizen that is aware of different cultures, traditions and perspectives and can interact in diverse environ-ments. It is what businesses call an important soft skill for the workforce – before and after college.

GaDOE is launching a new initiative to encourage public schools to prepare students for the interconnected world. The International Skills Diploma Seal will prompt students to challenge themselves academically through schoolwork in World Languages and International Focus courses and challenge themselves personally by engaging in meaningful extracurricular activities and community service. In a capstone presentation, students will reflect on the skills and perspectives learned. Georgia will be one of three states in the nation to offer this global readiness seal to its students and schools.

Schools can apply to become eligible to award the seals to qualifying high school seniors. They are encour-aged to review their course offerings with an international focus. We have more than 70 courses on our state list that have an international focus in areas like CTAE, ELA, Fine Arts, and, Social Studies.
