Geography
- The study of the
earth and what is
on it (describing
the earth)
- 2 types: human
and physical
Geography: Human- The study of how
humans affect and are
affected by the earth.
Examples (write only if you
want):
How smoke in the western
United States is often caused
by people starting fires which
get out of control.
Geography: Physical- The study of the
Earth’s surface and
what we find there.
Examples:
Mountain ranges
Rivers
Oceans
History- The study of
change over time
Examples:
In the early 1900s the Treasure
Valley had a very small population
of farmers and ranchers. Today
there are more people in this valley
than in the entire state of
Wyoming.
Economics - Study of the production,
consumption and transfer of stuff.
Example:
A high school student works at Arctic Circle
making burgers for customers (make). The
customer eats that burger (use/consume). The
customer pays the student at the counter
(trade/transfer of money).
Economics: Subsistence/Traditional

individuals or communities
consume most of what they
produce with little surplus,
or leftover, products.
Examples:
A farmer who grows only enough food for
him and his family to eat.
Economics: Market Economy
- An economy in which property is owned privately and competition is encouraged.
Examples:
Ford and Dodge both make pickups. They
compete against each other for your business
so they can make money.
Economics: CommandAn economy in which
property is owned by the
state/government and
competition is eliminated
in order to control
economic activity.
Example:
If the US was a command economy and
they owned Apple, then iPhone would be
the only cell phone that you could get.
Samsung or Motorola would not exist.
Economics: MixedAn economy in which some
property is owned privately and
some of it is owned publicly (by
the state/government).
Example:
In Russia, most of the oil business is owned
by the government. They also have private
businesses like McDonald's and other fast
food restaurants in Russia.
Government
- Who rules? Who
has and uses power
in a country or
location.
Example:
The Meridian City Council is
elected by the people in town to
make decisions (power) for the
whole population.

vested in the Royal
Family and country is
led by either a king or
