During your apprenticeship, dependent on your ability, you will have the opportunity to progress from an apprenticeship to an advanced apprenticeship. From there, you can continue with further learning, to gain higher qualifications all the way to university and beyond.

GEN II has been delivering exceptional apprenticeship training for over a decade and continues to be the leading trainer of Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear and Systems & Control Apprenticeships in Cumbria. We have recently been awarded a Grade 1 ‘Outstanding’ in our Ofsted inspection.

Your employment prospects with a GEN II apprenticeship couldn’t be better. In the last ten years, over 2000 apprentices have been trained by GEN II, with 93% of them progressing into full-time employment with their employer.

The company currently trains 850 apprentices across the county, however our apprenticeship programmes are very popular and competition for a place with GEN II can be fierce. The earlier you apply, the more chance you have of being considered by an employer. Throughout the recruitment process, you will need to show commitment and awareness of your responsibilities to both yourself and the company who would employ you.

Welcome to the GEN II apprenticeship information guide for 2013. By now you will probably be thinking about your future and what to do after you leave school or college, which can be daunting. GEN II are here to offer you the best possible start and the first step towards a highly rewarding career.

By choosing an apprenticeship, you will be able to train on the job using state of the art machinery and equipment. You will be taught by industry leading specialists, all whilst becoming qualified and receiving a wage. Not only that, but you’ll be getting your first step onto a career ladder with real prospects. What’s more, you’ll be gaining skills and qualifications that are recognised by employers nationally and developing the the key skills and behaviours that are essential for industry.

The following pages are designed to inform you of the various apprenticeship disciplines offered by GEN II, allowing you to decide which apprenticeship will best suit your unique skills and interests.

The information, advice and guidance received throughout the apprenticeship programme will be provided from a range of GEN II staff including Trainers, Administrators, Managers, Human Resource Personnel as well as Apprentices currently studying with GEN II.

GEN II offer a mentoring scheme to learners. A mentor will typically be a member of the training staff and the support provided is to ensure that you are able to meet your full potential. You will be allocated a support trainer who will review and assess your progress throughout the programme and who can be approached for information, advice and guidance at any stage throughout the apprenticeship. Furthermore, GEN II will support you in finding an employer placement and provide you with advice and guidance on producing CVs and improving your interview skills. All information, advice and guidance will be provided in complete confidence.

GEN II also have an independent professional counsellor who can be contacted for confidential advice and guidance on either personal or work related issues.

What will I study as an electrical apprentice with GEN II?• Electrical installation • Maintenance • Soldering • Fault finding • Electronics • Instrumentation • Installation • Electrical safety • Safe use of tools • Health and safety • Engineering drawings The role of an Electrician:Electricians are highly skilled crafts men and women, who work with electrical equipment and supplies on a wide range of engineering machinery and equipment. They also control and maintain instrumentation equipment that is used to accurately measure and regulate process variables such as flow rate of liquids or gasses, temperature or pressure. Their work ranges from installation of domestic electrical circuits for houses, to sophisticated installation and maintenance of highly complex machinery and equipment in major processing plants and factories. Electricians install, maintain and test electrical & instrumentation equipment, systems and appliances, and have to be able to diagnose and fault find problems with electrical equipment. For these reasons they need to be highly skilled with a logical and methodical approach to their work. Electricians need to have perfect colour vision and therefore must undertake a colour blindness test.

Where will my training be delivered?First year - You will learn for four days a week in the ENERGUS facility with one day per week for your Technical Certificate. Second year onwards - Employer work placement. You will study a Technical Certificate one day per week and will be visited by GEN II staff around every six weeks to assess your competence.

Carlisle and Furness Learners - You will be employed by a company from day one; you will either do your training with GEN II, and/or at your place of work. You will be assessed on your work by GEN II and study a technical certificate one day a week.

The role of an Electrical Design Engineer:Electrical Design Engineering is a highly skilled technical role that will require you to work with a design house designing a wide range of electrical and electronic installations.

Electrical Design Engineers need to be safety conscious and have good IT, mathematics and communication skills. The training for this role willdiffer between training centres. West Cumbria learners will train for the first year in the training centre or following electrical programmes, then after the first year the learner will transfer to design in the Design Department with their employer. North and South Cumbria learners will undertake their training with their employer as soon as their apprenticeship commences.

Where will my training be delivered?West Cumbria Learners First year - You will learn for four days a week in the ENERGUS facility with one day per week for your Technical Certificate. The role of a Mechanical Craftsperson:Hand Fitting, Machining, Maintenance of Pumps, Gearboxes and Compressors. These are just a few of the things that you will work with as a mechanical apprentice. A mechanical apprenticeship involves the installation and maintenance of a wide range of engineering plant equipment, it may also involve the manufacture of new components using machinery. Mechanical Craftspeople are highly skilled and can work in a wide variety of industries and sectors. They work with highly complex plant and equipment. They are involved in the manufacture of component parts for machines, the assembly and installation of machinery, as well as the maintenance of equipment. They must work with precision and accuracy, and have a logical and thorough approach to work. They also need to be able to read and interpret drawings and diagrams, diagnose and fault-find problems with machinery and equipment, as well as work cooperatively with other colleagues to ensure that work is carried out to a high level of quality.Where will my training be delivered?West Cumbria Learners - First year - four days per week in the ENERGUS facility with one day per week to study a Technical Certificate. You will be assessed on your work by GEN II and study a technical certificate one day a week. Second year onwards - (for advanced apprentices) - Employer work placement. You will study a technical certificate course one day per week and return to GEN II for NVQ/portfolio work on day release.

The role of a System Control Technician:All production and manufacturing plants require control systems, without them the plants simply wouldn’t function properly, System Control Technicians are responsible for ensuring that the plant operates satisfactorily and withpeak efficiency. Control systems are particularly essential to industries such as Nuclear, Chemical, Petrochemical and Manufacturing. Control Systems Engineering has become a modern and complex discipline that requires the worker to have a wide experience of subjects such as ProgrammableLogic Controllers (PLCs), software engineering, plant instrumentation, electronics, communication networks and process control.

The role of a Control Systems Technician is varied but may involve design, development, maintenance and servicing of plant control systems, within the nuclear and process plant industry.

Where will my training be delivered?West Cumbria Learners - The first year will be spent training in the ENERGUS facility at Lilllyhall with one day per week studying a Technical Certificate. In year two you will join the Control Systems Department and undertake work experience to gain relevant skills and experience. During this time you continue to work towards a Technical Certificate; as well as returning for specialist training and projects at the GEN II facility at ENERGUS. In year three you will undertake additional project work at GEN II alongside your employment.

Carlisle and Furness Learners - You will be employed by a company from day one; you will either do your training with GEN II, and/or at your place of work. You will study a technical certificate one day per week.

The role of a Process Operator:As a process operator you will typically work in a manufacturing company that makes use of large and often complex pieces of machinery and equipment. It will be your duty to keep it operating safely and efficiently, you will also need to take samples of materials used for analysis. Since many manufacturing plants run day and night, you may be required to work shifts. Some of the roles you are likely to undertake are:• Starting up and shutting down plant machinery • Monitoring plant• Making adjustments either by direct intervention or through a computer• Taking and analysing samples• Troubleshooting• Communicating with other operators, team leaders and maintenance staff to keep everybody up to date• Keeping the work area tidy, safe and ready for the next Process Operator on duty

Where will my training be delivered? You will be employed by your employer from day one, undertaking your training in the workplace. You will be granted day release in order to study for a technical certificate at the GEN II Carlisle Skills Centre for at least one day per week.

What qualifications will I obtain?Intermediate Apprenticeship (12 months)• NVQ Level 2 in Process Industries and Operations• Technical Certificate - Level 2 Diploma in Process Technology• Functional Skills / Personal Learning and Thinking Skills / Employee Rights and Responsibilities

What will I study as a process apprentice with GEN II?• Chemical process plant• Material handling• Outer packaging process and methods• Machine operation and procedure• IOSH health and safety• Employee rights and responsibilities

Process ApprenticeshipIntermediate ApprenticeshipPre-requisites Preferred results: GCSE Grades A-C in Mathematics, English & Science. Although employer requirements may vary. Successfully pass the GEN II aptitude testing. Satisfactory reference.Duration Intermediate Apprenticeship - 12 - 18 month programme. Location Assessor Led Training based at Innovia, with Technical Certificate Studies taking place at ENERGUS or Carlisle.Wage £100 - £170 per week, negotiated between individual and employer.

The role of a Nuclear Operator:The work carried out by a Nuclear Operator can vary greatly and this programme will prepare learners to engage in both nuclear decommissioning activities and process operations. Nuclear Decommissioning involves the safe shutting down and dismantling of Nuclear Power Plants that have reached the end of their energy producing life, ensuring that there is no danger from radioactive materials and no chance of accident to people visiting the site.

Process Operations entails the operation of large and often complex machinery and equipment, making sure they run safely and efficiently. These skills are transferable to other fields such as environmental restoration or general engineering activities that are carried out within many businesses in the chemical, polymer and petrochemical industries.

Year one will be spent giving you a wide range of engineering and nuclear related skills in preparation for assessment on your NVQ Level 2 in the workplace including basic hand skills, maintenance skills, process measurement and control.

Where will my training be delivered? This apprenticeship is only available in West Cumbria. The first year will be spent training in the ENERGUS facility at Lillyhall. The second year will be in the workplace with four days per week on site and day release for further education with GEN II.

In year one learners are employed by GEN II but in year two learners will be employed by a company operating at a nuclear facility, potentially Sellafield.

What will I study as a nuclear operator apprentice?• Safe use of equipment and tools• Safe working practices• Accurate measurements and readings• Basic maintenance skills• Oxy fuel cutting methods• Plasma cutting• Health and safety• Glove box training

Nuclear Operator ApprenticeshipIntermediate ApprenticeshipPre-requisites Preferred results: GCSE Grades A-C in Mathematics, English and Science. Successfully pass the GEN II aptitude testing. Satisfactory reference.Duration Apprenticeship - 24 month programme. Location West Cumbria.Wage £100 per week minimum.

Please Note: Due to possible alterations in the employer requirements, the topics of study and qualifications for this apprenticeship could be subject to change in the near future.

The Nuclear Operator Apprenticeship scheme is divided into two types of career paths dependant upon employer requirements:

1. Nuclear Plant Operators:These people are trained to operate and maintain chemical and process plants that make a variety of products. Operators will monitor levels of flow, chemicals, temperature, waste products and radiation. They may take samples of products at different stages of the processes in their building and send them to another part of site for analysis for the business, customers, UK & international agencies.

Some Plant Operators will be trained in Plant Control Rooms which are automated processes to allow chemicals and products to be moved around the building or site in a controlled manner, other plants will manufacture products e.g. nuclear fuel pellets or put waste products into containers for UK and overseas customers.

2. Decommissioning Operator:These operators will be trained up to clean out and decommission old buildings and any redundant equipment as required to ensure that vessels and pipe work have no liquids inside them, monitored for contamination prior to them being cut up / size reduced before “bagging” them for disposal.

These operators will be trained to use a variety of cutting techniques, basic monitoring and collecting waste.

In some areas the operators will be trained up to use robotic equipment to cut or to compact materials as required by Sellafield Ltd or for customers. These are generally operated from a small control room inside the building.

What qualifications will I obtain?Apprenticeship (24 months)• Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Nuclear Decommissioning• Technical Certificate – BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Engineering or BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Engineering• Functional Skills / Personal Learning and Thinking Skills/ Employee Rights and Responsibilities

This is carried out on site placement and the modules will be agreed locally by each plant where the apprentice is assigned to.Some examples of Sellafield Ltd “on plant“ training that apprentices will carry out in process or decommissioning include:

• Health and safety courses• Building induction course• Glove box• Monitored / classified medicals• Monitored workers / classified workers courses• Respirator fit test• PVC & dust mask ( PPE worn in• Contaminate / radiological environments)• Crane driving• Fork lift truck driving• Size reduction techniques ( Plasma, Grinders etc)• Red & green waste route course• Basic monitoring techniques

Please Note: Due to the nature of this particular apprenticeship, it is a requirement that you will be least 18 years of age by September 2013 in order to be considered, this is because of the employers policies regarding entry to ‘active areas’.

The role of a Health Physics Montor:The principle function of the Health Physics Monitor is to provide a radiological safety and monitoring service to customers in order to meet business needs to defined standards.

The Role is to monitor radiation dose rates, personnel, surface and airborne contamination, recording the levels detected and responding accordingly.

Health Physics Monitors may also be part of the emergency response arrangements.

Duties and aspects of the role will also include: • Undertake clearance monitoring • Function test radiation protection instrumentation• Record radiation protection monitoring and survey results• Working at heights via the use of ladders and scaffolding• Working in confined spaces • Use of Personal Protective Equipment • Use of Respiratory Protective Equipment such as respirators and

breathing apparatus.• Obtaining information (readings), analysing the information and

determining actions.• Understand the relevant health and safety legislation with reference to the

tasks, the plant and the actions required to control hazards.• To understand and have relevant background knowledge in science, the

principles involved in the operation, maintenance of the processes and equipment used.

What qualifications will I obtain?• RSP Stage 1• Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Radiation

Health Physics Monitor ApprenticeshipIntermediate ApprenticeshipPre-requisites Minimum age is 18 years, to comply with Classified Workers requirements. Preferred results: a minimum of 4 GCSE grades A-C (including English, Maths and Science). Successfully pass the GEN II aptitude testing. Satisfactory reference.Duration Intermediate Apprenticeship - 18 month programme. Location West Cumbria.Wage £100 per week minimum.

What will I study as a pipefitting apprentice?• General health and safety in engineering construction • Specific pipefitting safety and safe working conditions• Technical drawings• Use of basic hand and power tools• Cutting and preparing pipe and plate tack welding • Cold bending ferrous and non ferrous pipe• Fabricating pipework and supports, • Assembling and installing pipework systems• Preparing and testing pipework systems

The role of a Pipefitter:Pipefitters fabricate pipework and supports using detailed engineering drawings, cutting, shaping and bending pipe in preparation for welding. Often working alongside welders they connect piping efficiently and safely, sometimes in difficult conditions.

Job opportunities are expected to be excellent as demand for skilled pipefitters is expected to outpace the supply of workers trained in this craft. Many employers report difficulty finding potential workers with the right qualifications.

Where will my training be delivered?West Cumbria Learners - First year - four days per week will be spent in the ENERGUS facility with one day per week studying your Technical Certificate. Second year onwards - (for advanced apprentices) - Employer work placement. You will study a technical certificate course one day per week and be assessed regularly by GEN II staff in your workplace.

The role of a Fabricator/Welder:Fabrication is a discipline which covers a wide range of occupational areas including: Welders, Platers, Sheet Metal Workers and Pipe Fitters. Fabricators are essential in all fields of engineering and manufacturing, and need to be able to work in all environments inside, outside and in some very special cases they may even have to work under water! Fabricators/Welders need to be able to interpret engineering drawings, convert them into metal shapes by developing patterns, marking out materials, cutting and bending steel plates and section material. This is done by using a range of powerful equipment such as guillotines, pipe benders, folders or computer controlled plasma cutting equipment. In many firms a fabricator will be expected to carry out both fabrication as well as welding work, but in many cases you will specialise in one of the two areas.

Where will my training be delivered?West Cumbria Learners - First year - four days per week will be spent in the ENERGUS facility with one day per week studying a Technical Certificate.Second year onwards - (for advanced apprentices) - Employer work placement. You will continue to study a Technical Certificate one day per week and be assessed regularly by GEN II staff in your workplace.

Carlisle and Furness Learners - You will be employed by a company from day one; you will either do your training with GEN II, and/or at your place of work. You will be assessed on your work by GEN II and study your Technical Certificate one day a week.

The role of a Scientific Technician:Scientific Technicians perform a wide variety of roles in the Nuclear, Chemical and Manufacturing industries, as well as in academic and research establishments throughout Cumbria.

Scientific Technicians are needed to test and calibrate equipment as well as undertake investigations and analyse samples. Scientific Technicians are likely to work with hazardous substances, so it will be necessary for you to have a strong understanding of health and safety procedures and safe working practices.

During the apprenticeship:• You will be aware of health and safety regulations• You will be improving your working relations everyday as you are likely to be working in teams• You will manage information and use computers• You will probably work with hazardous substances• You could help to manage the equipment kept in the stores • You will manage data and produce reports • You will create presentations on work you have completed

Where will my training be delivered? You will attend the ENERGUS facility at Lillyhall for your initial induction and then you will be placed with your employer. You will undertake an NVQ Level 2 in Laboratory Operations in year one and attend GEN II to study your Technical Certificate. On completion of year one you will progress to NVQ Level 3 in the workplace (2 year). Employment responsibilities and rights as well as the key Skills is undertaken over the three year course.

What is the application process?All applications for apprenticeships with GEN II should be made via our online recruitmant portal, which can be accessed via our website - www.gen2training.co.uk. If you do not have access to a computer or the internet at home, you will still be able to access our application portal. Visit your local Inspira or library, They will have computers that you can use. Alternatively you can use your school computers. Be sure to sign up using an email address that you have easy access to. You will need to check your e-mail regularly for updates on the progress of your application! If you have applied before, please use the same email address to log back in to your application, and update it for 2013.

Please Note: If you have learning difficulties, such as dyslexia or any disability where you are given extra time for exams, you must disclose this during your application. It will be necessary for you to provide proof of your requirement for additional time by bringing evidence to your aptitude test session. GEN II encourages applicants to disclose any disability in order for learning to be tailored and also assist with any special access requirements.

Application process for engineering/manufacturing disciplines

You will be able to apply from 4 Jan by visiting our website at www.gen2training.co.uk. Applications will close on ENERGUS: 28 February 2013Carlisle / Furness: remain open until further notice.

The application can take some time to complete. You will be able to save your progress at any point and come back at a later time to edit or complete your application before final submission.

Speak to your careers advisor at Inspira who can help you through the application process and advise on which apprenticeship to choose.

All fully completed and approved applicants will then be asked via email to book an aptitude testing slot. Testing will take place throughout the half-term week of February (11 - 15 Feb 2013) and regularly thereafter.

Aptitude testing includes:• Understanding of instructions• Numeracy skills• Calculating capacity• Spatial reasoning• Mechanical-technical understanding• Logical reasoning

Aptitude testing will take place during February half term, at our centres (ENERGUS, Furness and Carlisle Skills Centres).

Applicants are required to book their own timeslots for testing via the Online Recruitment Portal using the email address you registered with - you will not receive a letter.

You will receive an email, asking you to book your timeslot once you have fully completed and submitted your application. PLEASE NOTE: the skills centre you select for your aptitude test must be the skills centre you have chosen for your apprenticeship. If you do not book a timeslot online during the required times, then your application will be withdrawn.

All applicants will be emailed their aptitude test results. Applicants for ENERGUS will be invited to book an interview slot using the GEN II Online Recruitment Portal. Inverviews will take place over Easter.

Applicants for Carlisle / Furness will be invited to interview direct by prospective employers.

It is advisable to undertake a mock interview with Inspira prior to your interview with us at GEN II, as this will help you to gain an understanding of what to expect. You will also be provided with useful feedback on possible improvements that you could make to your interview technique.

Please Note: Unsuccessful applicants who do not pass the aptitude tests will be provided with further advice and guidance as their application will not be progressed further.

Offers of an apprenticeship with GEN II may be conditional upon confirmation of the required GCSE / A Level grades & satisfactory references.

Successful applicants will receive their conditional offer through the post during May - August. One copy should be signed and returned as soon as possible.

Those who have been unsuccessful in the interview process will be notified via email.

Some applicants will be retained on a reserve list, and may be offered a firm place in the event that a space is made available.

This process continues until our induction, which will normally begin during the first week in September.

Who are Apprenticeships for?Apprenticeships are for everyone with the ability to gain skills and qualifications through work and study, regardless of age, gender or ethnic group.

What are my career and development prospects both during and after my Apprenticeship?During an Apprenticeship, dependant upon employer requirements and performance, you can progress to Advanced (NVQ Level 3.) On completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship from there you can continue with further learning and gain higher qualifications all the way to university and beyond. This will depend upon employer support. However, GEN II has introduced a university bursary scheme to support its former apprentices to go on to higher education. This is up to a maximum of £3,000 per year to help towards the cost of fees. It is only available for those who have completed an Advanced Apprenticeship and applicants will need to pass a selection interview to prove their commitment to continue with their studies.

What’s the difference between an Apprenticeship and an Advanced Apprenticeship?An apprenticeship will typically last between12-15 months and you will gain a Level 2 NVQ depending on the individual trade areas you study.

An Advanced Apprenticeship will last approximately 42 months and you will gain a Level 3 NVQ.

Why should I consider an Apprenticeship? An apprenticeship offers you on the job training, nationally recognised qualifications, payment and real career prospects, all in one go. You will gain hands on experience in a working environment, whilst safely learning the theory behind the work and essential functional skills. Furthermore, you will be gaining skills and qualifications that are recognised by employers all over the country. So an Apprenticeship is a great first step onto the career ladder. As an apprentice, you could be exactly the type of skilled employee any business in the engineering industry will need.

Am I guaranteed a job at the end?Although we have an employment rate of 98% for those who complete their apprenticeship. Unfortunately, there is never a guarantee of immediate employment when you finish your apprenticeship.

Where will my training take place? Where you train will depend on two factors. One is the apprenticeship you decide upon, and the other is where you live. In most cases you will simply train at the Skills Centre that is closest to where you live. However, certain apprenticeships are only available from specific Skills Centres.

For example, if you live in Carlisle, but wanted to undertake the Nuclear Operator Apprenticeship, it would be down to you to secure your own travel arrangements to Workington as this particular Apprenticeship is only available at the ENERGUS facility, West Cumbria.

In this instance you will spend approximately four days per week learning hands on in one of our Skills Centres with the remaining day focussing on your Technical Certificate.

After being selected by an employer, you will undertake your apprenticeship with them in their workplace for four days per week (unless released to GEN II for specific training) with the remaining day spent studying a Technical Certificate.GEN II staff will visit you in the workplace to ensure you are undertaking the relevant work to achieve your apprenticeship.

Where you will study your Technical Certificate (if applicable)

GEN II Carlisle or Furness Skills Centre. Technical Certificate studies are to be attended for one full day per week during term times.

Please Note: If you attend an apprenticeship at Carlisle or Furness then you will be selected by an employer before you start the apprenticeship. It is up to you to demonstrate the commitment and correct attitude to learning and development in order to increase your chances of continued employment once you have completed your apprenticeship.

Many GEN II apprentices are selected by local companies before the end of their training which means that they become employed directly by their companies. They will individually have agreed salaries and terms of employment, with the employer agreeing that they complete their apprenticeship training with GEN II.

GEN II Policy Statement - Dignity at WorkThis is the Dignity at Work Policy Statement of GEN II Engineering & Technology Training Limited. GEN II fully supports the right of all people to be treated with dignity and respect at work. We are committed to promoting a working environment free from all forms of harassment and bullying and will ensure that appropriate steps are taken to achieve this.

We are aware that workplace bullying has a detrimental and negative affect on individuals and therefore operational efficiency. We are therefore resolved to creating a working environment that supports the dignity of all employees and is free from bullying and any other forms of harassment. We are committed to ensuring that all staff, learners and individuals participating in any activity or learning with our company receive an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. This policy is therefore intended to provide a framework which will assist in the prevention of bullying and harassment and provide guidance as to what action should be taken if such incidences occur. All staff, learners, employers and subcontractors have a responsibility to recognise bullying and harassment and take appropriate action in accordance with this policy as soon as they become aware of any such behaviour. This policy is supported by, and has been developed with, the trade unions representing employees. It will be communicated to employees using a variety of methods including posters, leaflets and training.
