God has led the initial directive from the onset, and today great success has been achieved in many of the original SL2C around the world.

The three new cities announced on Thursday evening include Edinburgh, Scotland; Tokyo, Japan; and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Bringing the “light” to these cities will be accomplished first by deliberate prayer, and then through providing a HUB Center, which will serve as a church, a training center, and a church planting base.

A portion of the SL2C initiative focuses on Acts 10:34b-35, which states, “God … accepts men from every nation

“World Missions relies on its faithful partners to increase the vision of SL2C,” Griffis stated. “Discipleship training is key to fulfilling God’s command. People from every nation who fear him and will do what is right is God’s purpose. Our responsibility is to present a way for disciples to follow His leading and share the Gospel with all who need to hear.”

“We are enthused and grateful for the opportunity to extend the Send the Light project emphasis to these added dynamic cities of enhanced popula-tions,” Griffis concluded. “God is in the soul-saving business, and we want to be part of this exceptional time in spiri-tual history in the FINISH aspect of the Great Commission!” u

This will be the first time the General Assembly has been held in Indianapolis since 2006. Previously, the Midwestern city was the site in 2002 and 1996.

When the Church of God was there

for the 71st General Assembly the venue was the RCA Dome and adjoin-ing convention center. Since 2006, the RCA Dome has been razed and the con-vention center expanded into a portion of the space. The 2020 Assembly will be conducted in the expanded convention center.

“Indianapolis is a beautiful and

versatile city for our needs,” stated Secretary General John D. Childers who also serves as chairman of the General Assembly Cabinet. “There are connect-ing skybridges with local hotels and a convenient adjoining shopping center. In addition the expanded convention center space since the last time we gath-ered there offers plenty of room for us to conduct the business and events of the General Assembly.” u

The legacy tapestry for Church of God Black Ministries is comprised of unique, committed, ministerial spirits from across the United States, Canada, and abroad. These individuals will forever be etched in our hearts and minds whenever we reflect on milestones achieved by Black Ministries over the years. In recognition of these namesakes and their notewor-thy servant leadership, the International Church of God Black Ministries Department, on August 2, 2018, at its Gathering of Cultures Awards Luncheon, honored men and women of ministry who exemplify faithful servitude and who have sown seeds of salvation and hope for many. As did those who came before them, these honorees who are community ministry leaders, have each spread the message of salvation and blazed path-ways to good works, serving to elevate the Kingdom by contributing to the ultimate fulfillment of the Great Commission.

International General Council Business Continues on Thursday By Randall Parris

On Thursday, August 2, the Inter-national General Council continued with the business at hand. The Council completed the published agenda the previous day. Near the close of the Wednesday General Council Business Session, a number of positive, honor-ing, and appreciative resolutions were offered:

—A Resolution of Affirmation for Dr. Timothy Hill was presented and warmly received.

—A Resolution of Appreciation for the International Executive Committee was presented and welcomed by the International General Council.

—A Resolution of Appreciation for the International Executive Council was offered with thankfulness.

—A Resolution of Appreciation for the General Assembly Cabinet was pre-sented with gratefulness.

—A Resolution of Appreciation to the City of Orlando for hosting the International General Assembly was shared.

—A Resolution of Cooperation about-Finishing the Great Commission was affirmed.

—A Resolution on School Violence was shared and affirmed.

On Thursday, Bruce Deel, of the City of Refuge in Atlanta shared his amaz-ing story of Urban Ministry during the Special Order of the Day. Business then turned to motions from the Motions Committee. During both the morning and afternoon Thursday International General Council Sessions, several rec-ommendations were processed.

Motion 1: After a great deal of discussion, debate, and work, Motion One eventually passed. That motion increased the minimum required number of pastors on the Council of Eighteen from nine to twelve.

Motion 2: This motion offered recommendations regarding the separa-tion of agenda items pertaining only to the United States be offered for debate only to members of the International

General Council who are members of Church of God congregations within the United States. After some discus-sion and debate, this item failed.

Motion 3: This was very similar in scope and content to Motion Two, and also failed.

Motion 4: This was a motion for amendment, changing the minimum amount of contribution to the pas-tor’s Church of God Minister’s Retirement Plan from 5 percent to 10 percent. This motion carried.

Motions 5 and 6: These motions strengthened and clarified the process and potential discipline regarding pas-tors found at fault for failing to send in their respective church reports for four (4) months. This measure carried.

Other motions that were offered to the Motions Committee had not yet been vetted, reviewed by the International Executive Committee, or prepared for visual presentation to the body. Therefore, the International General Council adjourned and resumed business on Friday morning.” u

USA Missions: Planting and Revitalizing Local ChurchesBy Mitchell Maloney , Director of USA Missions

USA Missions is devoted to spread-ing the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, and is dedicated to the mission of the FINISH Commitment to answer the call of the Great Commission. One way that USA Missions is answering that call is through church planting.

The foundation of church planting is found in Acts 2:42, 46-47, which reads:

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellow-ship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers . . . So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplic-ity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

In this passage, we dis-cover a model for planting and establishing churches. As

we plant churches, we must remember the church in Acts and ask the question, “Can this model work today?”

As the believers in Acts met both in the temple and from house to house, so we must be willing to plant churches in whatever venue the Lord provides. Whether you meet in a home, a tradi-tional church building, or even a coffee shop, there is an opportunity to multi-ply the body of Christ.

To paraphrase Mark Batterson in his book, The Circle Maker, the coffee houses of today are like Jacob’s well in the New Testament—a place to gather and an opportunity to establish real relationships.

Indeed, the Church of God has seen growth through church planting in the

past few years. From 2016–2018 alone, 478 new church plants were launched. In the previous four years, 2012–2016, 450 churches were planted. The goal set to plant 1,000 churches by 2020 at the 2012 International General Assembly will be reached in 2019. To God be the glory!

We believe that the abundant growth in local congregations comes as a result of concentrated prayer for the growth of the church. From concentrated prayer comes a contagious mission to spread the love of Christ to the ends of the earth. This contagious mission results in celebratory worship; and as we cel-ebrate as a body and worship our Father in heaven, we form caring connections with those around us. These caring con-nections develop in time to a commit-ted discipleship that fuels the spread of

the Gospel, healthy churches, and a soil that is ripe for church planting.

Planting Life-Giving Churches to Multiply the Kingdom

USA Missions is devot-ed to providing resources, coaching, and training for local Church of God congregations. The apostle Paul used the analogy of “the church as the body of Christ” (I Corinthians 12). The body of Christ is one unit that is made up of many parts, with each part being essential to the overall health of the body. So it is with the church.

As a church, we fail to acknowledge the value of every church regardless of size or location. Really, all churches, pastors, and members are important to God and should be to us as well. Around 80–85 percent of churches in the USA and Canada have an aver-age attendance of 85 or less. Many of these churches are plateaued or in serious decline. These churches have

become unhealthy and don’t know it. Revitalization is not just about grow-ing, but it is about being a healthy church.

Through USA Missions, we are com-mitted to helping our existing church-es through a revitalization process. Churches don’t have to die if they are willing to respect the past, refocus their vision, plan for success, and revitalize their church. We have developed a sys-tem to help your church do just that.

We believe that it is not the size of the church that matters, but the health of the church. When it comes to your local congregation, there are six key factors that serve as a map for

church health—they are: prayer, worship, evangelism, disciple-ship, fellowship, and serving in the community. These factors, when biblically and consistently applied, make for a healthy con-gregation and a lasting mission.

Acts 2:42-47 gives us a potential model for a healthy and growing church through concentrated prayer, caring connections, committed discipleship, contagious mission, and culminat-ing in celebratory worship. A healthy church engaged in these practices can consistently serve their community for Christ.

At USA Missions, our goal is to create and resource partnerships with existing churches to FINISH the Great Commission.

Do you want to learn more about revitalizing your church congregation? Visit us online at USAmissions.com or stop by our booth in the Exhibit Hall. u

16 FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2018

MEMORIAL CELEBRATION – Friday, August 3, 2018We offer praise and thanks to those who we celebrate in this service.

They have not only reached their reward, but they have left us with a lasting legacy – a legacy of sacrificial service to the King of Kings.

While we miss our loved ones, we take comfort in the assurance found in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17: “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” Upon this amazing promise we put our trust.

The Church of God has a great heritage, primarily because of the work and efforts of those listed below and honored in the Friday evening memo-rial service. Although our hearts are heavy because of the loss of these heroes of the faith, we rejoice in the fact that they have made Heaven their eternal home. Most importantly, we look forward to joining them and seeing our Savior face-to-face.

Thank you for sharing your loved ones with us. They truly have FINISHED strong.
