Ways ToDrink More Water

During warm weather, it’simportant to drink plenty ofwater to prevent dehydration.Increase your intake and stayrefreshed by followingthese tips:

Make it part of your dailyroutine. Dietitians recommenddrinking water at several specificpoints during the day: after youwake up, with meals, beforeand after exercise, and whentaking medication.

Pick a cup and fill ’er up! Aninsulated bottle, a colorfultumbler, a mug with a handle ...it doesn’t matter what kind ofdrinkware you use, as long asyou like it. Choose a containerthat is comfortable to use andsuits your style.

Sip through a straw. Manypeople find it easier to drinkthrough a straw, and you’ll getmore water with every sip.Plus, sipping slowly is betterthan guzzling, which cancause bloating.

Find your favorite flavor. If youdon’t like plain water or simplywant some variety, enhance theflavor with a few fresh berries, some sliced fruit, a splash ofjuice, or sprigs of fresh herbssuch as spearmint.

Bananas for BananasA staple for breakfast meals

and the perfect on-the-go snack, bananas are one of the world’smost consumed fruits.

Bananas were cultivatedthousands of years ago inSoutheast Asia and reached theNew World in the 16th century. When first imported to the U.S.in the 1800s, the banana wasconsidered an exotic food andeaten with a knife and fork.

Although bananas areconsidered fruits, botanicallythey are berries. They growupside down on giant herbplants, not trees, in tropicalclimates. Their familiar curvedshape is the result of growingagainst gravity toward the

sunlight. An individual bananais called a finger, and a bunch iscalled a hand.

Worldwide, there are over1,000 varieties of bananas, butthe one most commonly foundin stores and eaten fresh is thebright yellow Cavendish, due toits sweet taste and creamytexture. Bananas are rich inpotassium, which can helplower blood pressure.

U.S. Military HelmetsThrough History

A crucial piece of equipmentfor a soldier in battle istheir helmet.

The U.S. Army first issuedhelmets when America enteredWorld War I in 1917. Modeledafter the British Army’s Brodiehelmet, the headgear resembledan upside-down metal bowlwith a brim and chinstrap. Thesteel helmet helped protect thetops of soldiers’ heads.

World War II soldiers worethe M1 helmet, which extendedfarther down the head and had asteel shell and adjustable liner, similar to construction hardhats. Its sturdiness promptedtroops to nickname it the “steelpot.” The M1 went on to be thestandard-issue helmet during theKorean and Vietnam wars.

The invention of Kevlar led tothe PASGT helmet, short forpersonal armor system forground troops. Layers ofpuncture-resistant Kevlarprovided a more lightweightshield for troops. Since 2003,U.S. ground forces have wornthe ACH, or advanced combathelmet, but officials arecontinually testing new options.

The Origins ofWedding Traditions

Traditionally, June is apopular month for couples tosay “I do.” Take a look at somewedding customs and howthey began.

The shower. The populargift-giving party has roots inHolland where, centuries ago, ayoung woman’s father refused togive her a dowry because hedidn’t approve of her fiancé.Friends stepped in and showeredthe couple with gifts to starttheir new home.

The ring. The circular shapeof the wedding ring hassymbolized everlasting love forthousands of years, but why is itworn on the third finger of theleft hand? Ancient Romansbelieved a vein in that finger randirectly to the heart.

The cake. During the RomanEmpire, wedding cakes werebaked with wheat or barley andcrumbled over the bride tosymbolize fertility. Guests wouldrush for pieces to take homefor luck.

The bouquet. Before the use offlowers, brides’ bouquets weremade of aromatic herbs, such asgarlic and thyme, which weremeant to drive away bad luck.

Hog Wild for HarleysFor more than a century,

Harley-Davidson motorcycleshave been synonymous withadventure and cruising on theopen road.

In 1901, the wheels beganturning for a young Milwaukeeman named William S. Harley, who had the idea for amotorized bicycle. He drew ablueprint of a small engine to fiton a bike, and over the next twoyears, he and childhood friendArthur Davidson worked onthe design.

They built the firstmotorcycles in a backyard shed.In 1905, their first dealershipopened in Chicago. As businessgrew, the company hired moreemployees and built a factory inMilwaukee. Police departmentsbegan ordering Harleys for theirofficers, and the U.S. militarybought thousands of bikesduring both world wars, wheretroops used them to delivermessages between units.

After World War II, legions ofleisure riders took to the roads, cementing the popular brandas an American icon. Thecompany’s bar and shield logoin orange, black and white isone of the most recognizableemblems in the world.

A Look Back at JacksCherries in a basket, pigs in

the pen, and over the fence ...Those are some of the namesyou may have heard whenplaying jacks, a classic children’sgame with a history inmany cultures.

Evidence left behind incaves suggests that prehistoricpeople played a form of jacks asa way to improve the hand-eyecoordination needed forhunting.

In the early days, the anklebones of sheep served as thegame pieces, and the activitycame to be known as“knucklebones.” Rocks, beansand other small objects werelater used, until the invention ofsix-pronged jacks, usually madeof metal or plastic.

The basic concept of modernjacks is simple: A player scattersa set of jacks onto a flat surface, tosses a small rubber ball intothe air, then with one hand, triesto scoop up a set number ofjacks and catch the ball.Variations of the game alter thenumber of ball bounces allowedand the hand motions used.

Game pieces can be carried ina small pouch or pocket, makingjacks a portable pastime that canbe played anywhere.

Directions:Place the red sheet of paper

horizontally in front of you, then fold it in half, as if makinga greeting card. Cut along thefold to make two piecesof paper.

Hang for cheerful décor.

Brain

Brain Bender:It’s in the Bag

Carl and Janet are playing anew beanbag toss game. Theboard has three holes, A, B andC, each with a different pointvalue. On Janet’s turn, shethrows two beanbags, and theyboth land in hole C.

Using the clues provided, canyou figure out what Janet scoredon her turn?

• Landing in holes A and Bgives 19 points.

• Landing in holes A and Cgives 14 points.

• Landing in holes B and Cgives 13 points.

(Answer: A is worth 10 points,B is 9 points, and C is 4 points, soJanet scored 8 points. Adding 14and 13, which were the scores forthe throws A, C and B, C, thensubtracting 19 removes the scoresfor the A and B holes, leaving thescores for landing in hole C. Janet’sscore is 14+13-19 = 8.)

The Wright StyleCalled the greatest American

architect of the 20th century,Frank Lloyd Wright pioneered astyle that is still revered today.Deviating from European-influenced designs thatdominated the time, Wrightcreated buildings that wereuniquely American.

With nature as a main sourceof inspiration, Wright called hiswork organic and always strivedfor his structures to be inharmony with the environmentthat surrounded them. He wasthe leader of the Prairie Schoolstyle of architecture, in whichbuildings were made of naturalmaterials and featured low, horizontal lines and open floorplans. Wright also designedfurniture and stained-glasswindows.

During his 70-year career,Wright completed more than500 buildings, and many ofthem are National HistoricLandmarks. Among the mostfamous are the legendaryFallingwater, a house builtabove a waterfall inPennsylvania, and the lastbuilding he designed, theGuggenheim, the New York Cityart museum known for its iconicconcrete spiral design.
